[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 971018] Re: Auto-hide Unity Launcher will not reveal when mouse pushed to left side in VirtualBox or VMware

2016-08-11 Thread Chris Cheney
This is still happening on 16.10 as expected due to the previous setting
of 'Opinion' the only way to work around this issue on VMWare
Workstation is to change the setting under Edit->Preferences->Input
Optimize mouse for games: Always. Disabling "Automatically grab and
ungrab the mouse cursor." does not fix the issue.

There probably should be an option for auto-hide to unhide on being near
the edge, it could be settable just in unity-tweak-tool...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1360545] Re: [trusty] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

2014-09-04 Thread Chris Cheney
I forgot to mention in #2 that the reason I tested and uploaded a new
dmesg was due to multiple entries in the 3.13.0-35.62 Ubuntu changelog
relating to i915 dp support. The changes didn't appear to fix my issue
though.

2014-09-04 Thread Chris Cheney
So I dug around in fdo intel BZ area and found that adding the following
to the kernel may produce better logs:

drm.debug=0xe log_buf_len=4M

I have attached the resulting log. It looks a lot like the other bugs
for ThinkPad that have been around for a long time now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1360545] [NEW] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

2014-08-23 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

I have a haswell motherboard with 3 1080p monitors connected, 2 directly
via HDMI and a 3rd HDMI connected to an active displayport dongle. The
monitor on the displayport connection had been working fairly reliably
until I decided to finally upgrade my bios to fix some other issues (big
mistake, since I late found out its nearly impossible to downgrade).
Since I upgraded the monitor nearly never works, I did get it to show
display a few times but I'm not sure how that happened. At the moment
while researching information to add to this post it actually started
working for the moment. When I run xrandr it causes the screens to blink
rapidly for around 30sec-1min.

In dmesg I see instances of:

[ 10.053292] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching
from hotplug detection to polling
[ 240.125029] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching
from hotplug detection to polling

Also fwiw I get different errors, and a kernel backtrace, but still no
display on current drm-intel-nightly from here:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/

And of course it all still works fine under Windows 8.1.

Searching google I see other instances of people with the same problem
on the i915 driver on other systems like ThinkPad, etc.

eg:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1062571

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.drivers.intel/23611

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1360732] [NEW] [utopic] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

2014-08-23 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

This is essentially the same issue as bug #1360545 but on utopic. On
utopic there are also some kernel backtraces as shown below. The system
was completely unresponsive and I had to actually unplug the displayport
dongle to be able to file this bug report.

In addition to the interrupt storm message I got on trusty I also saw:

[3.713503] [drm:ivybridge_set_fifo_underrun_reporting] *ERROR* uncleared
fifo underrun on pipe C
[3.713536] [drm:ivb_err_int_handler] *ERROR* Pipe C FIFO underrun

The numerous backtraces looked similar to this each time, they appear to
be happening about 3 times per second until I unplugged the dongle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1313436] [NEW] Unity/Compiz very slow after resume from suspend

2014-04-27 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

After suspending and then resuming the system unity/compiz often but not
always becomes extremely slow to respond, so much so that you can see
the transistion from lockscreen to desktop for many minutes (if it ever
finishes). I will attach a picture of what it looks like. I didn't wait
around long enough to see if it would ever actually finish showing the
desktop.

Is there any way to work around this issue? setsid unity has been
mentioned online as a workaround for unity/compiz problems but that does
not appear to work when run from the linux command line outside of X.

The system has never been able to run the nouveau driver due to it
crashing on resume under any desktop environment, which is the primary
reason its running the nvidia driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-19 Thread Chris Cheney
I see lots of kworker cpu usage on 3.9rc7 today but my mouse isn't
slowing down. I can't run perf top to see why on that version due to the
following:

# perf top
perf_3.9.0-030900rc7 not found
You may need to install linux-tools-3.9.0-030900rc7

Which does not appear to be available.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
This doesn't appear to actually be fixed and the workaround of running
the below command no longer works on Ubuntu 13.04 with linux 3.8.0-18.
Is there a way to get the fix from 3.9 into 13.04? My system is so
unresponsive at times, and it happens fairly often, that I can't do
anything with the mouse.

echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
Brad Figg is having me test out linux 3.8.0-19.29 to see if that
resolves the problem. I'll report back here after I have tested it for a
bit.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
I'm testing the latest mainline kernel at the moment from the following
location:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc7-raring/

I'll report back later today with the outcome.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
So far it appears to be working with the 3.9rc7 mainline kernel without
needing the workaround, or at least is taking much longer to trigger the
issue. Howevre that kernel is not slated to go into 13.04 so this bug or
one of its duplicates probably should be open still instead of 'Fix
Released'. I am willing to test out any kernels to help get this issue
fixed in 13.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2012-05-23 Thread Chris Cheney
I tried adding the lines in #2 to a xorg.conf file but it didn't seem to
help for my ThinkPad X200. The mouse is barely usable and I see high cpu
usage for kworker in top. It happens every time I use my laptop, but
usually not for the first few minutes, so if there is a good way to
debug kworker issues I could probably help track down the problem.

This seems to fix the problem:

http://souriguha.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/how-to-solve-problem-with-

And yes this problem existed before 12.04, at least in 11.10 as well,
but it didn't seem to happen nearly as often.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model

2010-04-27 Thread Chris Cheney
The updates in the ppa do not seem to fix the problem for me on VMware
7.0.1, host Ubuntu Lucid, guest Ubuntu Lucid. I still can't type my
password into the login box after restarting with the updates applied.
Though maybe not all of the updates are processed yet since you posted
only about 31m ago. It did however pull a few packages from your repo.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model

2010-04-27 Thread Chris Cheney
Oh for my above problem that is still showing I do have both xserver-
common and xserver-xorg-core from pitti's sru-test ppa.

My vmware setup might be slightly different than others in that I
upgraded today from fully up to date Karmic 64bit to Lucid 64bit using
update-manager -d. After rebooting I no longer had keyboard access at
gdm and found this bug report.

My /etc/default/console-setup has:

XKBMODEL=SKIP
XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=U.S. English
XKBOPTIONS=

At GDM where it doesn't work (from the command line check) it shows up
as:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, evdev, us, U.S. English,

In Gnome where it does work it shows up as:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, evdev, us, ,

It also appears the virtual keyboard is very fragile and crashes after
trying to turn it on and off, maybe related to 526791, but I am using
VMware 7.0.1 on a ThinkPad X200 not a Macbook.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411542] Re: OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow

2009-08-11 Thread Chris Cheney
Jono,

Can you also attach a document exhibiting the issue and explain how to
easily see the issue? It is possible that it is an issue in OOo but I
have seen other xserver related issues in the past that sometimes just
showed up in OOo. I am still running Ubuntu 9.04 at the moment with OOo
3.1.0 from the ppa so I may be able to see if it shows up with an older
version of xorg also.

Thanks,

I tested with 3.0.1 and doing the same thing can't reproduce the issue

somehow. I should have OOo 3.1.1~rc1 uploaded after alpha 4 release

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391720] [NEW] [gm45] KMS does not detect screen resolution properly

2009-06-24 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop i915 KMS incorrectly determines the
resolution of the LCD. It also for some reason thinks two DVI ports are
connected. It looks like it takes the maximum resolution from both
(1360x768 for ghost DVI and 1280x800 for internal LCD) to come up with
the resolution to use on the internal LCD (1360x800). I have included
below the output of xrandr when running with nomodeset kernel option.
Jesse Barnes mentioned he knew about this bug when I showed him the
problem at UDS and that there was a fix but not in the kernel tree at
that time. It appears the fix still isn't in at least the Ubuntu kernel
tree and needs to be added.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391720] Re: [gm45] KMS does not detect screen resolution properly

2009-06-24 Thread Chris Cheney
It is also interesting to note that prior to KMS xrandr thought the two
extra ports were HDMI and after KMS thinks they are DVI. The only video
physically connected is the internal LCD or at least nothing is hooked
up externally. The machine physically has an internal LCD, a VGA port
and on the docking station it has a vga port and a DisplayPort port.
However, when I reported this bug the docking station was not connected.

Chris
