[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013171] Re: Many package hooks not ported to python3
This report was already getting too big for Launchpad to handle quickly, and is all marked fixed. In these cases I'm usually advised to leave the closed report as it is, and handle the new occurrence with the new bug. You can certainly put a link to this bug, there, for informational purposes. Maybe I can get to that. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1183269] Re: new upstream release 9.1.3
On my Ivy Bridge system, the dash now opens very slowly. Window and viewport switching are also glacially slow. A few other upgrades, like the kernel, arrived at the same time. But with pablomme's report, too, it seems more likely to be this. Specifically it's Ivy Bridge GT2, aka HD 4500. I'll try to grab the older packages, and downgrade mesa, to confirm. I edited the original report, above, removing the word 'bug' before all the upstream bug numbers. Launchpad had the wrong idea, linking them all to the wrong local bugs. Hi - Nautilus manages the desktop background, and provides those menus. Nautilus in quantal right now is having some crashes. Maybe that's what's causing this problem for you. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1055987] Re: [sna] Need tty switch after screen off to resume display
Oh, BTW, I'm running edgers to see if bug 966744 still happens. So far I've only seen this more minor bug, so it might be one behavior or the other. Or it could be that it masks the 966744 problem, or something, so I probably shouldn't speculate, oops. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_r
For the folks in comments 260-263: this bug is just about these symptoms under Intel video hardware. You all mention nvidia or radeon,,so that's different . (It doesn't matter if it's an Intel CPU.) With hundreds of posts here, you may not have seen what Daniel wrote in #196 : Hi all. We need to be focussed and specific or else bugs like this never get resolved. Since all the stacks I have seen so far have been identical hangs in i965_dri.so, I have now clarified that this is an Intel graphics driver bug. Although a workaround in compiz might still be possible. If you're not using Intel graphics, please log a new bug. [...] Or there may be similar bugs filed about those drivers. I'm sorry I can't point you to them right now. And if there is a compiz workaround, that might help you, so subscribe to this bug if you want. But reporting information about non-Intel video will unfortunately just clog this bug, not help it. I guess I'll put some form of that information into the main description, since seeing [i965] in the title isn't going to clarify that for everybody. And if we know other bugs to subscribe to, for other hardware, we might mention them there, too. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_r
** Description changed: + This bug is about problems after resume, with Intel video hardware and + i965_dri.so. If you're having these symptoms with other hardware, + Nvidia or ATI/Radeon, this isn't the place for reports or questions. + + [Those comments are building up, so brief links to direct other people + to appropriate bugs might be good here, if anyone has them. Thanks.] + + + This happens intermittently. Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a black screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse moves) but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix it. Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has password lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen display of whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The mouse cursor still changes as you hover over various elements but the display is frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1 but killing the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop. Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel also did not fix the issue. BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to recover is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost. [UPDATE] It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking 'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting to invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a bug report about it. After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to start over again to get it all functioning properly. Hi Bryce - Two X sessions. I knew that description didn't seem good; I'll update it. I cannot reproduce it at will, or at all, so far. I've had problems a number of times when switching between two X sessions, but certainly in a minority of those events. Most of them I've considered bug 966744, happening when one session had been idle long enough for DPMS to kick in. X would stop displaying anything, but no crash or lockup triggered apport. I had a different strange problem yesterday, still under xserver-xorg- video-intel 2.20.6-0ubuntu1, where X slowed way down and eventually stopped responding. I haven't tried to file that, because, so far, no problems have happened yet under xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.20.7-0ubuntu1. Hoping the problems were transient. Happy to clarify these awkward descriptions as needed. Thanks! ** Description changed: - I had two different user sessions, running on two vts, when this crash - happened. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1041770] Re: Weird artefacts on screen (white traces, white boxes around windows)
Hey cagara - I'm using unity with the default theme, and haven't had time to try testing with your packages. But here is another thought (if you are still experiencing the bug). A lot of people had graphical corruption when Mesa 9.0 arrived. The people on bug 1042211 have intel video (Shahar's report was duped to that), and are using unity. Their problems have improved. You've got kwin, not compiz, and I guess you have nvidia hardware on that laptop. But you might ask on that bug, there were a number of knowledgeable developers there. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_r
Hi Ben, fair question. It's just upstream, and it's hard to tell. I think this automated message: Bug Watch Updater (bug-watch-updater) 3 hours ago Changed in xserver-xorg-video-intel: status: Confirmed → Fix Released might be aided by having the word upstream in there somewhere. Or some other way for people to see, without having to puzzle, that 'Fix Released' isn't referring to what's available from their distro. 'Cause those two words sure grab your attention. :) And, Bugzilla just provides a status of 'Fixed', while Launchpad has 'Fix Committed' and 'Fix Released'. And the bugzilla installations I've seen, like Gnome, fd.o, and the kernel, mark things Fixed upon commit. LP translates Fixed to Fix Released, and I've been confused by this in the past. Maybe I can look into that more, some time. (And I sure don't mean to knock LP. Upstream tracking, and distinguishing committed from released, are both great features.) While I'm here I'd like to thank Chauncellor for all his work here, and in filing the upstream report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1036114] Re: (usability) Apport dialog asks a question that user has no way of answering
Hi, Benjamin - But the window in the screenshot is called Apport? Are you sure? Yeah, fair question. The apport bug reporting program lets packages provide custom scripts that help handle bug reports in their area. You can see them under /usr/share/apport/package-hooks . Brian's referring to /usr/share/apport/package-hooks/source_xorg.py , which is provided by xdiagnose, and used by many X-related packages. As you can see by the many symlinks to it in that directory! Do you have a quick shortcut for a (preferably harmless) crash that will trigger Apport so I can click around and get to terms with the current setup? You can start a program, then kill it with a signal 11, to make it segfault, from a terminal. Like, in a terminal: $ xterm [2] 10169 $ kill -11 %2 When you run it in the background, with '' after the command, bash shows you its job id, 2 in this case, and the system PID, 10169. Bash's builtin 'kill' interprets a plain number as a pid, and %number as a job id. So kill -11 10169 would have been the same in this case. Hope some of this info can help you keep digging. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037610] Re: xorg nvidia crashes, ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit
I can't say much about the nvidia driver crashes, so this doesn't directly address your question, but let me ask - Have you tried running the open source nouveau driver, rather than nvidia's? It has improved a lot, recently. I am not running a machine with an nvidia card, right now, and I'm running Quantal anyway, so I'm not sure how the version in 12.04 compares to the current releases of the xorg nouveau server, and the driver in the kernel. Running the xorg-edgers ppa: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa might not be the smoothest long-term solution, but it might give you an idea whether nouveau can serve your needs. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1030151] Re: no more graphical screen after fglrx intallation through system settings interface
Thomas, I don't know what problem fglrx is having, but I'll try to help get your system usable again. To get rid of fglrx, run: sudo apt-get purge fglrx (You could use 'remove' as well as 'purge'. 'purge' removes the leftover configuration files, too, which probably isn't a big difference in this case.) That should remove it cleanly. And then reboot. When fglrx is not present, the Xorg ATI driver should run automatically, again. To pursue this problem, it would help to file the bug with Ubuntu's bug reporting program, apport. It will collect information about the hardware and software of your system, that will be needed to examine what's going on. You can do that for this existing bug report, by running the command: apport-collect 1030151 When you make new bug reports, it's 'apport-bug' from the command line. (Also available as 'ubuntu-bug' if that's easier to remember.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1030151] Re: no more graphical screen after fglrx intallation through system settings interface
Hey, Thomas, that's great! It's hard to keep working on a bug when the tools crash, so thanks for trying. Searching around a little about apport and Unicode, I see bug reports like this: Apport console frontend (ubuntu-bug, apport-cli) doesn't work with non-English locales Bug 492290 I wonder if that could be it, if your Ubuntu machine is set for a French, or other, locale? If that might be it, people there have been able to use apport from the terminal, if they run it under a generic locale. That could look like: LC_ALL=C apport-collect 1030151 or LANG=C apport-collect 1030151 Those are probably pretty equivalent for our purposes; I don't know enough about locales. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1030151 Title: no more graphical screen after fglrx intallation through system settings interface To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1030151/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1024768] Re: [xorg-edgers] Missing icons in unity launcher and app switcher after update
It's probably good for everyone to keep an eye on https://launchpad.net /~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa . Right now it says: July 13th: Mesa currently has problems with unity where the launcher icons are invisible, it's suggested to hold mesa back to the 0529 version, stop using this PPA, or use another session such as gnome or unity-2d until it is fixed. So people who want to stick with the edgers drivers should try downgrading the mesa packages first. You may still have them on your system, under /var/cache/apt/archives , or you might find them by poking around the ppa. Another alternative is mentioned at https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers : For DDX (card drivers) updates there is https://launchpad.net/~xorg- edgers/+archive/drivers-only. These are relatively safe drop-in replacements that can be used in otherwise square installs of Ubuntu. It's possible Jason and others might get better results from that PPA.
