[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2003581] Re: Mouse keys fails to work after a restart

2023-04-23 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This comment is a guess, and I may be completely wrong, but I wonder if
this happens in Ubuntu on Xorg only. If so, it may be related to the
fact that ibus wasn't always automatically enabled at the start of the
session.

That issue was fixed in 22.04 via bug #2007379. So, @nix, it would be
interesting to know if the issue is still present after you have
upgraded the im-config package to version 0.50-2ubuntu22.04.1.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2016918] Re: Firefox snap opens a black window on wayland

2023-04-18 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I applied a mutter patch written by Marco Trevisan and uploaded to a
PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/mutter

With the binaries from that PPA build I can no longer reproduce the
black window issue described in this bug. Not even after having run:

killall Xwayland

So I pushed the patch to the repo.

an upstream issue too:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1969396] Re: Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout

2022-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Now I have tested a bit more back and forth, and here is a new attempt
to describe the nature of the issue:

Whether Right Alt works as the compose key or not depends mostly on
where in the list of input sources the keyboard layout in effect is
present.

If the layout in effect is the first one in the list, Right Alt works
fine as compose key. This is true whether Alternate Characters Key is
switched off or set to "None". (No problem with "English (Dvorak, alt.,
intl.)" either, in other words, if that layout is first in the list of
input sources.)

If the layout in effect is further down in the list, Right Alt may or
may not work as compose key. Not sure about the exact pattern here.

As regards Alternate Characters Key, I notice a marginal impact. If the
English (US) layout is not the first layout in the list, Right Alt works
as compose key with that layout if Alternate Characters Key is switched
off, but not if it's set to "None". It should be noted that English (US)
does not set Right Alt to the 3rd level key by default.

Steve, does the above description reflect your observations too?

Over to the question whether this is a g-c-c bug to some extent. I still
think that g-c-c sets sensible options, and that the unexpected behavior
is rather an XKB issue. The reason why Alternate Characters Key sets
"lv3:ralt_alt" is that it assumes that a user who picks something else
but Right Alt wants to be able to use Right Alt as any Alt key.

OTOH, given this issue wrt Right Alt as compose key, you can argue that
g-c-c should better not provide Right Alt as a compose key option...

** Summary changed:

- Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout
+ Right Alt not working reliably as compose key unless the layout in effect is
first in the list of sources

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1969396] Re: Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout

2022-04-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I concluded that the description was related to the use of the
us+dvorak-alt-intl layout, and not to g-c-c setting incorrect options.
Observations from use of the us+intl layout:

Alternate Characters Key to None

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt']

Right Alt according to xev: Alt_R

Alternate Characters Key to None + Compose key to Right Ctrl

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt', 'compose:rctrl']

Right Alt according to xev: Alt_R
Right Ctrl according to xev: Multi_key

Alternate Charters Key to None + Compose key to Right Alt
-
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt', 'compose:ralt']

Right Alt according to xev: Multi_key

I see only expected options and expected results. So please elaborate on
how you think that g-c-c behaves incorrectly, preferably with a
reproducible use case.

2022-04-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
>> 1. Which keyboard layout are you using?

There is something with that layout. With that enabled I can reproduce
the problem. Both on jammy and impish.

>> 2. What happens if you drop the 'lv3:none' option, so you only have:
>> ['altwin:menu', 'compose:ralt']
>
> This works.

It doesn't work for me with the "English (Dvorak, alt. intl.)" layout.
Unlike when using for instance the Swedish or "English (US, intl., with
dead keys)" layout, 'compose:ralt' does not override the layout's
default definition of "Right Alt" as the 3rd level key. Can it be some
kind of race condition?

So it seems to be the combination of Right Alt as compose key and the
English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout which does not work. I changed the
bug title accordingly.

And AFAICT gnome-control-center sets the expected XKB options, so it's
not a g-c-c bug. Maybe an xkeyboard-config bug.

@Steve: Are we agreed on this problem description?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1965609] Re: Not all Hunngarian keyboard layouts' name translated to Hungarian layout

2022-03-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

In xkeyboard-config the string representing the first of those layout
variants looks like this:

"Hungarian (101/QWERTY/comma/dead keys)"

And that string has a Hungarian translation:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jammy/+source/xkeyboard-
config/+pots/xkeyboard-config/hu/515

However, the gnome-control-center developers seem to think that commas
look better than slashes to separate the various aspects of the layout:

"Hungarian (QWERTY, 101-key, comma, dead keys)"

But by splitting and recreating the string that way, they end up with a
different string for which no translation exists. And that's most likely
the explanation for the other untranslated layout names as well. And
it's not only affecting users with a Hungarian locale — I see those
strings untranslated when using a Swedish locale, for instance.

So it's a bug in gnome-control-center.

@Viktor: It would be great if you could call upstream's attention to
this by submitting an issue:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues

If you do, can you please post the URL to the upstream issue here for
tracking purposes.

impish fixes the issue; hence it's a 1.1.9 regression.

Setting GDK_BACKEND=x11, as mentioned in the upstream issue, works
around the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1909347] Re: Keyboard layout used in the second place breaks keymap

2020-12-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have Ubuntu MATE on a VM and could reproduce your first issue there,
i.e. it's present only when Neo 2 is not first in the list of keyboard
layouts.

Consequently this is probably an xkeyboard-config issue and not specific
to gnome-control-center. And the issue is reasonably upstream in nature.

I found this open upstream issue regarding Neo 2:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-
config/-/issues/14

Can't tell if it's related to your observations. If not I would
recommend you to file a new issue upstream. If you do, please post a
link to it here for tracking purposes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1906887] [NEW] 3rd level key options hidden in Tweaks if show-all-sources is true

2020-12-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

* Enable show-all-sources

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources 'true'

* Open Tweaks and navigate to Keyboard & Mouse ->
Additional Layout Options -> Key to choose the 3rd level

* Find that only two odd options are shown

I would have expected the lv3:* options to be shown, i.e.:

  grep lv3 /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst

If I downgrade xkb-data to 2.26-2ubuntu4, the issue is not present. So
the issue seems to be caused by some kind of incompatibility between
gnome-tweaks and xkb-data 2.29-2.

Check out this Ask Ubuntu question for a way to handle Apple devices:

But please note, though, that such an entry in /etc/default/keyboard

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1449250] Re: Keyboard Layout "Portuguese (Brazil, nativo for US keyboards)" doesn't respect US keyboard layout.

2019-10-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This is not an IBus issue - changing affected package.

With that said, it's easy to set it up to meet your expectations:

* Pick the English (US) layout

* Go to Settings -> Region & Language and change either Language (i.e.
the display language) or Formats to a Portuguese option. That will bring
you '+c => ç.

With that said, this is an upstream issue, and it would be great if some
affected users could work together with the upstream maintainer to make
more sense of the Portuguese (Brazil) keyboard layout options. An
upstream issue can be filed here:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config/issues

This is the file which seems to need some love:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1550751] Re: can't configure keyboard to use chromebook special keys (layout)

@Jaime: Is this possibly the same issue as bug #1818338? If it is, I
would suggest that we make this bug a duplicate of the other one. Then
you may want to try to get it accepted upstream.

Thanks for your report!

The issues you describe are upstream in nature, and it would be great if
you could file an upstream issue as well:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config/issues

If you do, please post the URL to it here for tracking purposes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1818338] Re: Add support for Chromebook keyboards

2019-04-06 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Benjamin,

Thanks for clarifying.

I for one am not able to tell if your proposal should be included. With
that said, I'm pretty sure that it would not be motivated to make it an
Ubuntu specific patch, i.e. if at all, it should be committed upstream.
So I would recommend you to propose it here:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config/issues

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1740894] Re: KEY_RFKILL is not passed to userspace

2018-10-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Mario: Yeah, history seems to repeat itself.

Personally I think it would help if you could file a bug specifically
about the Dell issue, based on the proposed fix of xkb-data. The xkb-
data fix is probably a step in the right direction, even if it triggers
that regression.

What do you think?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1791367] Re: [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)

2018-10-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for letting us know. Then there is no reason to upgrade xkb-data
to deal with this bug, and since it's late in the cycle, I withdraw my
FFe request. Let's keep 2.23.1 in 18.10, and upgrade xkb-data next cycle
instead.

So we are back at square one as regards the cause of the issue, right?

** Summary changed:

- [FFe]: Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in
gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)
+ Airplane mode key on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop not working in
gnome-shell (X or Wayland) but working on console (Cosmic 18.10)

** Description changed:

- To the release team: Asking for FFe since it appears to be a good idea
- to fix this bug through an upgrade to latest version of xkeyboard-config
- rather than just patching a single upstream commit.
-
- Proposal available at https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu
- /xkeyboard-config
-
- [Original description]
-
Please forgive if filed for wrong package. Problem occurs in X and
Wayland sessions but not on console, so does not seem to be kernel.

Repro on Asus UX561UD with Ubuntu 18.10 up to date:
  1. Log into Gnome X or Gnome Wayland session
  2. Press Fn+F2 which is the airplane mode key

-> Airplane mode should turn on but nothing happens

  3. Switch to console with Ctrl+Alt+F3
  4. Log into console
  5. Press Fn+F2 again
  6. Switch back to GUI session with Ctrl+Alt+F2

-> Airplane mode is on, icon appeared in Gnome task bar

  Same for turning it off.

No difference when booting 18.04.1 live image

This laptop seems not the only one with this problem. I got the idea for
trying the console trick from ArenaL5's answer on Askubuntu, but unfortunately
there is no solution there:
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/972367/airplane-mode-switch-does-not-respond

Please let me know whatever I can do to help debug this.

All other Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness,
touchpad off, sound etc.) except for keyboard backlight, but that works
with Ubuntu 18.04.1 and I will file a separate bug for this

correct.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1785387] Re: Euro sign not working on keyboard (Macbook)

2018-08-18 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
+ 4 has resulted in the ¤ character on Nordic XKB keyboard
layouts for quite some time. If new keyboards tend to have the €
character printed on that key instead, there may be a reason to
reconsider it.

However, in any case this won't be changed in Ubuntu only. I would
suggest that you file an upstream bug report too.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?product=xkeyboard-config

If you do, please post the URL to the upstream bug in a comment here.

Let me add: Using + E is not a workaround. It's currently *the*
natural way to type the € character with the keyboard layout - Finnish
(Macintosh), identical with Swedish (Macintosh) btw - you are using.

(To make it a bit extra complicated: The currency of Sweden is not
Euro.)

2018-07-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I jumped at conclusions; sorry for that.

I too see the issue you mention. However, I found an upstream bug
report, and one of the ideas mentioned there was to disable NumLock.
Once I had done so, the "German (Neo 2)" layout seemed to behave as
expected.

Can you please make sure that NumLock is turned off when switching to
Neo 2 and let us know if that helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768556] Re: Tilde/macron is no longer a dead key on German keyboard

2018-05-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

It seems to be an intentional upstream change of the basic German
layout:

https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-
config/commit/symbols/de?id=49129c63

So it's not a bug.

The good news is that the "German (dead tilde)" layout variant provides
the behavior you prefer.

2018-04-22 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report and your patch!

However, this is too late for Ubuntu 18.04, which will be released in a
few days. Many users change xkb-data files to set up personal keyboard
configuration, and we don't do stable release updates of this package
unless absolutely necessary, since it would overwrite such changes.

I see that it was included upstream, so the new Burmese layout variant
will most likely be included in Ubuntu 18.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2018-02-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Geraldo: When seeing your comment #175, I can't help thinking of bug
#1573755. It's a subtle issue, and to check if that is what you have,
you can either enter a guest session or create a new test user.

Otherwise, one observation I have made is that Wayland (enabled by
default in Ubuntu 17.10, but won't be in Ubuntu 18.04) makes this more
difficult. So logging in to Xorg sessions is safer so far in this
respect.

If you think there is a need to modify the Nepali keyboard layout, I
have to ask you to request that change upstream, more specifically here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?component=General
=xkeyboard-config=---

If you do, please post a comment here with a link to the upstream bug
report.

It's worth mentioning that if you install the ibus-m17n package, a
couple of IBus input methods for Nepali are made available. One of those
may fit your needs better.

This seems to be an old one. If I understand it correctly, Sergey posted
a suggestion in comment #17, but got no feedback. Can someone who is
affected provide some feedback to that suggestion?

Please note that this is not important enough to update 16.04 or any
other stable release. However, if the change would be committed
upstream, it might make it into Ubuntu 18.04.

xkb-data should not depend on it, since the xkeyboard-config
translations are provided via language packs on Ubuntu.

With that said, I agree that it's a bit odd that nothing depends on xkb-

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1685774] Re: Turkish keyboard issues

As regards the Turkish currency symbol, it was changed in xkb-data 2.20

However, Ubuntu 17.04 is shipped with version 2.19 of the xkb-data
package, so this will be fixed when 2.20 reaches Ubuntu (in 17.10 or

As regards the other things you list, it looks to me as if you basically
would like to see a complete rewrite of the Turkish keyboard layout.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1655782] Re: [FFe] Elfdalian layout + merge with Debian 2.19-1

@Iain: The nature of the changes between 2.17 and 2.19 can be viewed
here:

https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/log/

And the complete diff is in the PPA:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/306582771/xkeyboard-
config_2.17-1ubuntu1_2.19-1ubuntu1~ppa2.diff.gz

It's to a large extent additional layouts/variants, and such changes
don't at all affect the commonly used layouts for the big countries.
There are also a few specific bug fixes. Please note that we are talking
about data (the binary package xkb-data).

xkeyboard-config 2.19 is in Stretch. FWIW I have used it myself for a
couple of months. :) I'd say that the regression risk is very low.

2017-03-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Since this has taken some time, and we now are in FF, I request a FFe.

It's a mixture of upstream bug fixes and new layout variants. Even if
there is no revolutionary news in this upload, typing is an essential
part of the user experience, and being decently up-to-date with this
package is highly desirable (and of course important to those affected).

Please note that SRU:ing later is not an option; many users configure
their keyboards by editing package owned files, so xkb-data should
basically never be SRU:ed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1655782] Re: Elfdalian layout + merge with Debian 2.19-1

2017-02-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I think and hope so, Henning. It would have been in already if I hadn't
made a couple of stupid mistakes when preparing the proposed upload.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1655782] Re: Elfdalian layout + merge with Debian 2.19-1

2017-02-15 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Sebastien: What happened was mistake number 2 by me. :( I assumed
incorrectly that everything outside the /debian folder is included in
the *orig.tar.gz file, which it apparently is not in this case.

So I uploaded it again with the complete source including what Debian's
*diff.gz file adds to folders outside /debian. (It doesn't seem to
change what actually goes to the xkb-data package.)

My apologies. Third time's the charm.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1655782] Re: Elfdalian layout + merge with Debian 2.19-1

2017-02-07 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
So it seems... Embarrassing! :(

I must have had the 2.18 upstream source on disk when dput'ing, but I
still uploaded the correct upstream tarball. Shouldn't the package
system complain in such a case?

Anyway, it's fixed now (I hope). Sorry.
