[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1752938] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1768610 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768610 Yes, happened to me also. Kubuntu 18.04.1 Yesterday (Nov 27) suddenly (after auto upgrade of the system) nvidia stopped working (switched to nouveau, probably). Upgraded to Kubuntu 18.10 This actually made the situation even worse - stuck on 640x480 resolution. Had nvidia-390 installed at the moment, but the system wasn't using it. After some looking around, installed: sudo apt install nvidia-dkms-410 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-410 nvidia- kernel-source-410 which made the situation look better: resolution was again native (1920x1200) and nvidia-settings launched and showed 410 driver running. But in the Steam games, it showed that llvm driver was being used. And games such as Wolfenstein New Order (uses proton wine) didn't even launch. After some more fiddling around, actually using the Kubuntu GUI tool (System Settings > Driver Manager > Nvidia > 410) fixed the situation. Apparently the GUI tool does it somehow better than installing the nvidia package manually. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752938 Title: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1752938/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1778011] Re: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power
Tested with Dell XPS 9560 and Ubuntu 18.04. After installing the proposed packages and rebooting, everything booted correctly, although the nvidia driver was still loaded (I had my system set to use intel) and power use was quite high (~23W). *But* after following the test case steps and switching to nvidia, reboot and then back to intel (after logout+login), everything seems good - the nvidia module isn't loaded, powertop reports ~12W and as a bonus reboot/shutdown is much faster (used to stall waiting for something GPUish). Definitely much better than the LTS experience so far. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1778011 Title: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hwe-next/+bug/1778011/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1755438] [NEW] Freeze on shutdown if computer was suspended after last startup
Public bug reported: When I'm using Nouveau drivers with my Asus notebook (F556UQ-DM953T) and Ubuntu 17.10, I can't shutdown the computer properly if I suspended the machine previously. The notebook uses the Optimus configuration (Intel HD + NVIDIA GeForce 940MX). Scenario 1: 1. Startup computer. 2. Normal usage. 3. Shutdown > Everything works. Scenario 2: 1. Startup computer. 2. Normal usage. 3. Suspend (e.g. by closing the lid) > Wakeup. 4. Normal usage. 5. Shutdown > Computer freezes and must be turned off using the power button. There is absolutely nothing in the journal (when it comes to this boot session). It seems that nothing gets written to it after the shutdown command. Workaround: Use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers with "Power Saving Mode" - everything works as expected there. In all the testing I did before > when using GPU I never locked by just stressing CPU/IO until maybe just > before I stopped testing when I could get "make modules_install" to reliably > lock (as noted in a previous comment). To make it even more strange - As I reported earlier, on kernel 4.2.3 my system was unusable. I've downgraded to LTS kernel 4.1.12 and had not a single issue since than. I'm running 4.1.12 sucessufully for more than a week now - not a single freeze. It is quite hard for me to compare. Before I found this "magic" kernel parameter, my notebook was usualy frozen before CPU could get any warmer.. Since yesterday, I haven't seen more than 45C on all cores, while working in office apps or watching a movie. I guess, this temperature is not an issue on Celeron N2940. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453298]
I'm seeing very similar symptoms on my Celeron N2940 sysstem. I'm using Arch distro with kernel 4.2.3-1. The system freezes from time to time when playing videos, especialy when using HW acceleration. It usually happens when playing videos from mpv with VAAPI HW decoding enabled or flash videos in Firefox with HW decoding enabled in flash config file. System freezes usually in 10 to 30 minutes of playback. Playing videos with no HW decoding means less freezes of my system, but not avoiding them. It just happens less frequent and from time to time, even when no videoplayback is running in my LXDE. My best guess is that this behavior started somewhere between kernel version 4.0.7 and 4.1.6. Unfortunatelly, I can't be more specific, as it took me more than two months stresstesting CPU and memory before I pinpointed this problem as most probably connected with heavy GFX usage. I already tried a few options with no luck, like i915.reset=0/1, i915.enable_rc6=0/1 and i915.semaphores=0/1. I couldn't feel any difference, except with enable_rc6=9. System was even less stable then. Using drm.debug=1 did not produce any intereseting messages before freeze. It's filled with "random" I915_GEM_BUSY, I9!5_GEM_EXECBUFFER2 and I915_GEM_MADVISE messages up to freeze. Of course, I can post the log if someone feels it's interested anyway. I'm willing to offer more help with debuging this issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1453298 Title: Xubuntu freeze once a day To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1453298/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 521877]
Guess this is an invite to leave for Wayland or whatever. My current screen is 96 dpi (give or take a pixel) so I could care less but the moment I switch to a display with different resolution I will have to put up with this Xorg's insanity as well. If Xorg is going to be bug-compatible with Windows, and only Windows default settings, not Windows preinstalled by system integrators on all laptops with hi-res screens we can as well run ReactOS. The user experience will, again, be terrible, much worse than Windows. You should also add some (*((int (*)())0))(); to make it feel more like badly configured Windows. If you are really concerned that DPI alone is not doing the right thing then you should add a mechanism to adjust it per display type, not just flat force everything to some random bogus value. Eg. if you had a statistical study that says that people usually sit at a distance from LVDS which is about 2/3 the distance to TMDS then *leave the detected DPI alone* and add a *magnification factor* of 0.66 which modifies the reported DPI to be 0.66 of the actual DPI. Everyone can easily set to 1 if they want DTP-correct display and tune to a value that suits better their use of the system. This *also* handles displays that have non-square pixels correctly. You need a correct baseline to magnify from to get a magnification factor, not a brain damage factor. You can use the same magnification factor to set the resolution of something you think is a TV to flat 96dpi and still preserve the option to easily revert to the actual reported DPI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/521877 Title: [gm45] wrong screen size detected on X200s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/521877/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 521877]
(In reply to comment #66) Okay, I meant to post this a while ago and forgot, but the recent churn has reminded me to do so. I'll start with the tl;dr: I don't think this bug matters anymore. It's been over a year since this bug was opened, and during that time I've come to the conclusion that one should simply *always* specify DisplaySize in xorg.conf. This bug does not affect any setups that have a DisplaySize for each monitor: the only issue is DPI computation for monitors that have no DisplaySize. Lets look at the situation beforn and after the change: With the old behaviour, computing the resolution from the EDID works only if your monitor doesn't lie about its size (which happens far more often than it should). Otherwise, you have to set DisplaySize. Yes, only when your screen is broken. With the new behaviour, things work fine as long as 96dpi is correct for your monitor. Otherwise, you have to set DisplaySize. Which is not the case about half of the time, and is becoming increasigly rare. So regardless of which way we pick, some people need to add DisplaySize directives to their xorg.conf. We could probably argue all day about which way is better, but I recommend a much simpler solution: grab a ruler and put DisplaySize directives in your xorg.conf. I don't want to measure my screen every time I install Xorg somewhere. This bug was only a problem because the change broke working server configurations (this sort of issue seems to happen all the time with the X.org server). While breaking working setups is bad, I suspect that the vast majority of people who ran into problems because of this bug have long since updated their xorg.conf. At this point, changing it back will probably break just as many setups for marginal utility. If the screen lies then you are free to take it and beat some of the manufacturer staff with it until they fix it. I suggest somebody with a 120+ dpi screen burns a bag of Xorg CDs an beats some Xorg developer with it until they fix the X server since they don't seem to respond to logical reasoning.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 237164] Re: kvm needs to correctly simulate a proper monitor
Isn't the issue here that the emulated card has too low video memory forcing 800x600 when the driver selects the default 24bpp depth? This is an issue with some very old real hardware too. I guess X could account for that but due to its architecture every driver would likely have a separate check for this condition (S3, cirrus, and any other driver that could be possibly used with such low- mem card). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237164 Title: kvm needs to correctly simulate a proper monitor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/237164/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812]
I would vote for this change as well. I understand that it is not aligned with 13 years old standard and I am sorry for that. Still I see changing group on press breaking much many things than changing it on release. Maybe it is time to modify this library specification, because there is a good reason for that. Do you see any reason not to do it - other than there exists 13 years old library specification? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
Seth, thanks for your extensive feedback regarding the trackstick. Perceived behavior after patch application is that it's hard to point exact pixels. It feels like the cursor is too fast no matter how gently the trackstick is pushed. Changing the acceleration factor does actually have expected effect, i.e. changed acceleration. However no matter whether the acceleration is set towards higher values or lower values, one feels a significant (and constant) loss of pointing precision in the pointer while it is controlled via trackstick. If I understood correctly various touchpad revisions installed by different manufacturers report the same signature thus one has to use very compromise settings because the driver doesn't know which touchpad revision is installed (unless e.g. DMI table is inspected for retrieving more information about laptop). If it is the case I can understand it must be pain to satisfy everyone. Would you mind mentioning some few hints for anyone willing to poke around the trackstick sensitivity in the source code coming with the debian package of the driver? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/550625 Title: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/550625/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
I already remarked here that trackstick sensitivity becomes broken when this ALPS patches get applied. While it was an optional package I was okay with it. However I would disagree about getting the patches obligatorily. There was no reaction about it, I could speculate that people using touchpad usually don't care much about trackstick or based on some technical argumentation the developer believes the trackstick sensitivity problem cannot be related to this patch. If I am the vast minority with my Latitude E6410 I would take the time to remove the patched driver during kernel upgrade. Obviously I am very thankful and appreciate all the hard work which Seth devoted to the driver implementation. Just for the moment I would disagree that this patch is ready for mainline.
