[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034132] Re: [MacBook2, 1] Touchpad cursor moving in steps

2014-04-28 Thread Rob
I tried Ubuntu 14.04 on a Macbook 2,1 (1.83GHz Core 2 Duo). The cursor
doesn't work right. Apple cut support for OSX 10.6 so I wanted to switch
to Linux but I need the trackpad.

According to this person, it's not just the driver but Apple's
integration of hardware with software:

The issue still exists in Natty. Works under windows 7 so not a h/w
problem. Seems same as described above.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 619663] Re: [maverick] Non-mirrored dual-screen gives narrow display on secondary monitor

2010-11-02 Thread Rob
I chose Desktop login instead of netbook the normal NRE Unity
environtment at login screen. Dual monitors with different resolutions
works just fine. (Thanks Bobly)

I can't remember if gnome desktop was installed by default or I manually
did it since 10.04 (I did a network auto distro upgrade)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 619663] Re: [maverick] Non-mirrored dual-screen gives narrow display on secondary monitor

2010-10-24 Thread Rob
Still having problem as of today (Netbook LCD 1024x600, external monitor
at 1440x900). Updated and upgraded everything.

Both monitors flickering when both monitors are turned on at different
resolutions.
Turning off either monitor worked fine.
Checked "Same image in all monitors" made LCD looks weird.(Narrow)

I am not sure what more info needed, hardware as below, do let me know
at where ever needed:

HP Mini netbook

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated
Graphics Controller

Thanks.

At the moment I have no choice but to use 10.04 installed on another
partition which works just fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377402] Re: [K8M890]Square cursor with Ubuntu 9.04 livecd, during VNC connection

2009-12-04 Thread Rob
Had this problem this morning too when I installed 9.10. Tried different things
and ultimately I reconfigured my BIOS to use 256 MB instead of 64MB (default)
for the on board video. And the mouse cursor is right now :) Give it a try .
Note I have 2GB internal memory (and also an ASUS M2V-MX board)
Now I only have to learn my daughter handling dual boot systems ...

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 418282] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Asus U80 and UL30 series. Touchpad Panel missing from mouse settings

2010-04-25 Thread Rob
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 512192 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/512192

Fantastic - I applied the patches and recompiled, and this looks to have
solved all my touchpad woes. I can configure, and I am not getting random
jumps. Yes - it *just works*

thanks Florian!

Might try tuos' evdaemon next.

is there any testing users like me can help with?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 418282] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Asus U80 and UL30 series. Touchpad Panel missing from mouse settings

2010-04-03 Thread Rob
So I've been trying to find more information about this driver. I'm new
to working on drivers like this, but I'm willing to put in some effort
to try and resolve this.

>From my initial scans it seems to me the main source of the driver is
Arjan Opmeer's driver, but that the last touches to the kernel regarding
the Elantech driver were 2.6.28 or thereabouts. I'm running 2.6.32.

The Xorg synaptics driver is also involved but latest mention there is
0.99 or so, my ubuntu version is 1.2.2.

So does that mean current support is not forthcoming? Do we need to get
going here and try figure it out ourselves? I'm willing to put in some
effort - but I'm trying to find out where we are now, and what's
happening.

I experienced this issue (or something similar) yesterday. I used the
alt-sysrq-1 and alt-sysrq-t combo mentioned in the document linked to in
the last comment and after sometime the machine started responding
again. I captured the kern.log and will attach it here in case it's
useful.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1895870] Re: The only issue this bg causes is a slow down on the PC while it trys to repair the graphics issue.

2020-09-17 Thread Rob Thomas
The PC keeps asking to first do a Ubuntu 18 upgrade, which is not possible.
Then trys to do a fix for the previous video bug. I have reverted it back a few
updates and it is running better, but will eventually request to do an update
again. I believe Ubuntu 16 is still supported if not I will block all future
updates. Please let me know, and again thank you for your support.

Daniel:

Thanks for your email.  Hours after I posted the bug message, my
computer would not boot to the Kubuntu 20.04 o/s.  I determined the
culprit was the Nvidia software.  I attempted to purge the Nvidia
drivers via the terminal, but no success. I was then forced to perform a
fresh install of Kubuntu. The fresh install succeeded, with the Nouveau
driver. I then installed the Nvidia 390 driver package, via the muon
package manager.  This succeeded, and I am happy to report the Nvidia
390 driver is properly installed and the nvidia-settings app runs properly.

I am very reluctant to again attempt the install of the 450 driver
package. The days for downtime and frustration to re-install are simply
too great.  Thanks for your attention and understanding.

regards,
RG.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1901430] [NEW] After suspend stylus position confused about rotated screen in multi-monitor setup

2020-10-25 Thread Rob Frohne
Public bug reported:

I have a tablet computer that has the monitor rotated to upside down
landscape position. There is also an external monitor connected to this
computer. When I suspend and awake this computer, the stylus position
is as if the tablet computer's screen was not rotated. The mouse cursor
is fine, but not the stylus, and the confusion of the stylus goes into
the external monitor.

Thanks for all you do to fix annoying bugs for all of us users!

A work around is to rotate the screen, as the stylus regains its
bearings when you do that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1958673] Re: SRU Request for upgrade to X-Server 1.20.14 in focal/20.04-LTS

2022-03-23 Thread Rob Pieke
Good morning! I noticed that this report started with a request to move
Focal 20.04 up to 1.20.14, but it looks like only Jammy was moved up? Is
there a plan to move Focal up as well?

I selfishly ask as one of the MATE+NVIDIA495/510 sufferers (i.e.,

Natural scrolling works when selected in Wayland. Furthermore, edge scrolling
cannot be turned off
in xorg, but can be in Wayland. Two-finger scrolling cannot be turned off

This can be resolved by removing the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
package. I don't know if it was installed previous to installing Ubuntu
22.04, but both it and libinput were installed afterwards. Here is the
page that gave me the tip.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2002215] [NEW] Fujitsu T935: Cannot Calibrate Tablet

2023-01-07 Thread Rob Frohne
Public bug reported:

Hi,
Since upgrading to Kinetic, the Settings->Wacom Tablet->Calibrate will not work
for me. The option isn't available when I select the eDP-1 monitor (it is
grayed out), but even if I select "Automatic" where the Calibrate option is
available, the calibrate screen will not detect the stylus touches, so I cannot
calibrate the pen. The monitor is the built in monitor on my t935 Fujitsu
laptop. Here is some info that may help you

I suspect there is something wrong with the isdv4-5019.tablet file, but I don't
know what it is. I'd be happy to try and debug things, if given some ideas on
what to try. The tablet and stylus works fine except the calibration is a tad
off, which bothers me when using it, and I cannot calibrate it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2002215] Re: Fujitsu T935: Cannot Calibrate Tablet

2023-03-05 Thread Rob Frohne
Yes, this affects me too. It was working before the upgrade. I was
involved with the addition to libwacom that made it work previously, and
I suspect problems with that, where it identifies something not quite
correctly, probably the stylus, which seems to work as the mouse instead
of the stylus when you are on the calibrate screen. Also, as the
original reporter mentions, the monitor doesn't seem to be selected
correctly upon upgrade. I'm glad to test things, but I'm no expert on
this and I may be part of why it is now broken.

Rob

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1581560] [NEW] system crash when attaching external display

2016-05-13 Thread Rob Latham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 16.04, my thinkpad x1 carbon (3rd edition) freezes
and reboots when I attach an external display.

Process:
- put laptop to sleep.
- come into work the next day
- open up laptop
- plug in external display
- observe bug

Expected behavior: I can attach the external display
Observed behavior: system shows black screen on both laptop and display and
after a minute or two reboots. Laptop drives external display fine after
reboot.

I ssh to the laptop from another machine and monitored /var/log/syslog,
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, and ~/.xsession-errors. All I see in those files
before the lockup is this, from Xorg.0.log:

[ 34289.447] (II) intel(0): Enabled output DP1-8
[ 34289.448] (II) intel(0): Enabled output DP1-1
[ 34289.460] (II) intel(0): resizing framebuffer to 2560x1440
[ 34289.482] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 2560x1440@60.0 on DP1-8 using pipe 0,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1581560] Re: system crash when attaching external display

2016-06-21 Thread Rob Latham
I tried an upstream kernel ( 4.4.12-040412-generic #201606011712 ).
Attaching after suspend/resume no longer results in a crash.

The screen frequently fails to restore on the first try. dmesg has
these lines in that case:

[drm:intel_mst_disable_dp [i915]] *ERROR* failed to update payload -22
[drm] GPU HANG: ecode 8:-1:0x, reason: Kicking stuck wait on blitter
ring, action: continue
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO
underrun

But, in an improvement from the Ubuntu kernel, I can unplug and try
again with success.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1581560] Re: system crash when attaching external display

2016-06-27 Thread Rob Latham
The 'bios-outdated-1.13' tag confuses me.

It's true that I am running (dmidecode says...) Vendor: LENOVO Version:
N14ET29W (1.07 )

but there is no mention of display fixes in the release notes that
accompany n14ur12w (1.13).

I can update my bios but wanted to understand if the tag addition was
for fixing a known issue or was something I should try to see if it
helps.

As a reminder, Ubuntu-15.10 handled this display fine with the same bios
version.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1006156] Re: Mute button on USB headset steals and holds on to mouse focus

2015-01-22 Thread Rob Parnell
This bug is still active and affects Ubuntu 14.04LTS, the workaround
proposed by aleko74 (alexei-kojenov) in comment #4 is effective, but a
bug fix would be prefereable.

The workaround is:
create a new configuration file in "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" called
"50-plantronics.conf" or similar.
Insert:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Plantronics"
MatchVendor "Plantronics"
Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-evdev (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired => Confirmed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069082] [NEW] Display corruption (regression) on Intel HD 4000

2012-10-20 Thread Rob Hasselbaum
Public bug reported:

Around October 16, 2012, I received an update to a number of X11
packages from the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates PPA. After rebooting, the
desktop showed artifacts/corruption after short periods of use and
performance was noticeably slower. Assuming I got burned by the PPA, I
decided to format and install Kubuntu 12.10. The live USB seemed to work
fine, but once the install was complete (and all updates applied), the
problem returned. Everything was working fine prior to that update, so
this seems to be a recent regression.

My video hardware is an Intel HD 4000 chipset on an HP Pavilion dv7t
Quad Edition laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1061073] Re: Desktop effects are slow and desktop corruption using mesa 9

2012-10-23 Thread Rob Hasselbaum
Caution: Downgrading Mesa to 8.0.4 as described in the original bug
report does not play well with Bumblebee (NVIDIA Optimus support). When
I first downgraded, everything worked fine: no corruption, fast
performance. But after installing Bumblebee, I lost desktop effects. I
also tried Ubuntu (Unity) 12.10 and noticed problems there, too,
although not as bad as KDE. Some windows didn't render completely.

The only thing that made my system whole again was to revert to Kubuntu
12.04.

In response to comment 68: @Thiago, I see a similar problem in Unity,
but not as bad as KDE. In Unity, some windows do not render completely
(i.e. controls missing or cropped).

resolution 1680*1050. Works correct, quite slow. So no issues like black
screen. No confirmation the bug still exists. Now installing to hard
disk. Will check whether or not I can run with proprietary nvidia
driver. And bring that into the resulution from 24 inch screen
(1920*1200).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068601] Re: 10de:0322 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-05-29 Thread Rob Koll
Some more feedback. The install to hard disk seems to go well. Running
from hard disk, using nouveau driver, seems at first glance OK. I left
the system, later took out of screen saver. Background and top bar and
left side bar ok. But while attempting to open the system setting, the
initial menu only shows a rectangle with a king of garbled noisy
pattern, nothing readable. Opening a terminal by ctrl-alt-t opens a
comparable rectangle. Nothing readable, some kind of garbled noisy
pattern (there seems to be some regualarity, random colers/spots). So
the nouveau driver still has some issues. After opening ctrl-alt-F1
terminal (that works OK) and installing nvidia-173 (suitable for my
graphics card) and a reboot, the original black background issue is
again present. So the bug is confirmed using the daily build 13.10
downloaded 28-may-2013. I guess it would make sense to perform the
apport-collect thing. But as the terminal is not visible, I need to type
blind. Please advise on course of action. Attempt to perform the apport-
collect (might install a startup script, maybe some logging into file).
Can install the script after starting into one of the resque options. Or
does it make sense to kick out nvidia and continue on nouveau? Please
advise.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1186786] Re: nvidia-173 kernel module fails to build on kernels >= 3.10.x [error: implicit declaration of function ‘create_proc_entry’]

2013-06-03 Thread Rob Koll
Just some questions.

Do we need to wait for nvidia? Is it possible to tell how long they may
take?

Got today time to look into the failed build log. To me (programming
experience, but not in linux kernel) it looks like proc_fs.h changed,
create_proc_entry removed. Guess being replaced by something else (can
only guess which one, some with suitable parameters). Is it possible to
change nv.c to make it compile and link?

I don't know if you are able to test the outcome of something like that,
but my machine seems quite suitable for that ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068601] Re: 10de:0322 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-06-18 Thread Rob Koll
Christopher, Graham,

In my opinion it does not make sense to assign this bug to me. I opened
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1185911 for the
problem (which is still being processed). There is a 'small catch'. Up
to now, I fail to test if kernel v3.10.0 still holds the problem. It
appears that a change in the proc file system interface causes the
nvidia driver not to build nor install. This is laid down in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-173/+bug/1186786. I just wonder how that will solve...

All taken together, as this bug is no more actual for Graham, I guess
this one gets closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2014-12-29 Thread Rob Ludwick
Radeon 7730M using the i915 driver.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core
processor Graphics Controller [8086:0166] (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Chelsea LP [Radeon HD 7730M] [1002:682f] (rev ff)

After upgrading to 14.10 tonight, I noticed a slowdown especially while
using totem. I was getting about 0.2 frames per second using totem.
VLC appeared to run but was choppy at larger resolutions.

Other than totem, the primary symptom was sluggishness. It took 1
second for gnome-shell to react to selecting and dragging a gnome-
terminal that was in the background behind chrome.

After the upgrade, the kernel appeared to be running the i915 module (as
seen by lshw -c video). ibus-gtk was already installed, so it wasn't
that either.

Then I installed the edger's xserver ppa. This helped both gnome-shell
and totem, considerably.

Videos actually ran for a second or two at a time, but were still choppy
in totem. What appeared to be happening was that gnome-shell would
spike the cpu going to 80% when totem was running. Gnome-shell was more
responsive but still sluggish using the edgers xserver. Dragging a
gnome-terminal in the background still took around a second for gnome to
respond.

Then I installed gnome-staging ppa. This helped the most, eliminating
the gnome-shell cpu spike while playing totem, and making the windows
much more responsive including dragging a gnome-terminal that was in the
background.

So it looked like both things helped to varying degrees. I got a better
totem frame rate using the edgers x server. But gnome-staging gave me a
better gnome-shell performance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2012-02-26 Thread Rob Maris
I have this sort of problem with 11.04 as well with Mint12 (KDE) after
installing anew. Suggestion "sudo rmmod psmouse && sudo modprobe
psmouse" doesn't help in my case. In my case I get repetively (and
always) rid of this problems with log off and then log on! It seems
that any stuff that is "stopped" during logoff prepares for correct
mouse operation.

Note: in the case of ingoring left mouse key, sudo evtest
/dev/input/event5 (5 in my case) show up response of all mouse events,
but left mouse ignored by the desktop.

There is no difference whether I use the mouse directly on an USB port,
or via a USB/PS2-adapter pod. The mouse itself is generic simple mouse.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

2012-04-04 Thread Rob A
This bug still affects oneiric. Tested on an Lenovo T500. Is
particularly difficult for customers who have dual GPUs in their laptop,
and want to switch between them (for power or power-savings), but also
use the fglrx driver (not supporting switcheroo, only cold switch) for
games/other 3D.

Same error messages as reported by Toni Ruottu above, problem is solved
by removal of fglrx, which is an unworkable workaround, since it leaves
the ATI driver unusable. On my system, the i915 card uses 10W less
power than the Radeon, so on airplane flights, it's a big deal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

Additionally, I tried to script an "if [ `lspci |grep -c Intel` -gt 0 ];
then ..." to change the links between fgrlx and mesa, based on what I
had chosen in the bios at boot time, but don't see a difference between
the filesets that I can affect...

This says to me that there are only new files and links added with fglrx, no
replacement of existing files/links. In particular, /usr/lib/libGL.so doesn't
exist in 64-bit oneiric, like it did on the filers' system.

I have the same problem on a Thinkpad X1, running precise.
Unless I'm mistaken, it appears to be related to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47535
For me, setting INTEL_HIZ="0", as mentioned in the linked bug report, stops the
lockup in webGL.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068601] Re: 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-03-17 Thread Rob Koll
I am experiencing the same problem. Using an p4p800 motherboard with AGP
nvidia card, FX5200. I can use nouveau, but that is far to slow and
doesn't give good resolution (24 inch philips diaply 1920 * 1200). On
ubuntu 12.04 i used nvidia driver 173 with modified xorg.conf which
resutled in good performance at 1920 * 1200. After upgrade to 12.10 the
screen shows one color and only the mouse pointer. When moving slowly on
the screen i can probe for edges of windows, the resize handle becomes
visible. When using that to guess where the exit cross of apps is, i
could close the music player. On 12.04 I had some start up applications
(thunderbird, rhtyhmbox). They really start, and by guessing where the
cross is i could close rhyhm player. Just don't see their windows. The
problem is very good reproducable on my machine (some people report that
it starts and stops with unknown triggers). The screen shows one color,
could be any. At some moments it even changes to some other color. Seems
not to be related to user actions. There seems not to be a scheme in the
change or colors. I will re-install the nvidia and collect some logs,
add them later. Now the system is set to nouveau. This is posted from
another disk and 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068601] Re: 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-03-17 Thread Rob Koll
Additional information to #56. Note that the start up applications have
been disabled (somewhere i read something on problems when switching
focus, and thought it was better to not have too many windows). Still
nothing, meaning one color plus mouse pointer. The size of the mouse
pointer indicates by the way that the screen is running in one of the
higher resolutions. When shutting down, the background image si visible
for a very short period, that also indicates that the nvidia driver is
at least doing something.

One more remark: when booting from newly downloaded and burned life CD 12.10:
same behaviour.
Remark 2: there is a new bug Bug #1090761, which seems to me same as this one.
Please check for duplicate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1090761] Re: no visual, lightdm and desktop do load

2013-03-18 Thread Rob Koll
I am experiencing same issue, as far as i can judge from this
description. It looks like a duplicate of Bug #1068601, please check for
this. I filled some information on that bug, which may apply here as
well. Please look into this as well. Advise me on additional steps to
define root cause.
