Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2009564] Re: Touchpad disabling while typing does not work

2023-03-07 Thread Stephen Casper
Thanks, Daniel

   - I assumed this bug was known -- others online have had it. But I
wanted to still report it in hope that it will not always be an issue.
   - Neither setting org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad
disable-while-typing nor any other solution I have found online for this
works. Everything has invariably failed to make the touchpad shut off while
   typing.
   - I have been trying earlier today to log in with Xorg, and this is its
own can of worms. I can't, and I'm not sure why. I don't have the option to
with a little gear on startup/login. And when I try to
edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and restart the computer, it won't start up
unless I use ctrl+alt+f4 to open up a virtual console on startup and undo
   the change to /etc/gdm3/custom.conf.

In summary, nothing works. If some immediate solution comes to mind, great.
Else, I'll hope for an update soon. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1909946] Re: XWayland session starts, then quits.

2021-01-04 Thread Stephen Allen
Some more details: Using both gnome-wayland & ubuntu-wayland sessions,
the common major errors are the following:

12:22:45 PM gnome-shell: Can't create a GtkStyleContext without a display
connection
12:22:23 PM gdm-session-wor: gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file

It happens when the desktop appears after about maybe 10 seconds or so. So I
can't see PAM being involved as PAM is invoked during login — isn't it?

Anyway hope this helps.

Oh, I reinstalled from a backup image, (I have the system on a separate
hard drive to my home directory) that was working correctly on Wayland.
And with nothing added to the image, the same behaviour happened. So,
I'm thinking this is probably a setting in my home directory — but which
one?

Suggestions to troubleshoot this are welcome — I'll put in the time to
help figure this out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1909946] [NEW] XWayland session starts, then quits.

2021-01-03 Thread Stephen Allen
Public bug reported:

So, this started about a week ago after an update from Ubuntu. I can
initially login with XWayland, but something loading after the desktop
appears, causes the session to exit. The only thing I can find relevant
in the logs at the timestamp this occurred are the following:

-gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file

-Failed to start Process error reports when automatic reporting is
enabled.

-A start job for unit UNIT has failed

I hope this helps track down the issue. Thanks for reading.

BTW I have to submit this as a bug on something else, launchpad keeps
telling me that XWayland doesn't exist.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1866995] Re: XWayland both Gnome-Session and/or Ubuntu Session No Cursor Available

2020-03-11 Thread Stephen Allen
I just noticed that GDM hasn't been updated to 3.26, so this shouldn't
be reported yet as the new gnome packages haven't obviously been
released yet. So pardon the interruption.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1631715] Re: Password required twice returning from suspend

2020-01-29 Thread Stephen
I'm seeing this issue for the first time in Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan).

Both the screensaver and the power manager have preferences for locking.
I see this issue when both are enabled.

Under: Screensaver Preferences -> Lock Screen, I see:
Enable Lock Screen: Y/N
Lock Screen with Screensaver: Y/N
Lock the screen after the screensaver is active for ___ minutes
Lock Screen with System Sleep: Y/N

Under: Xfce Power Manager -> Security, I see:
Light Locker:
Automatically lock the session: Never/When screensaver is activated/When
screensaver is deactivated
Delay locking after screensaver for [1 to 61] minutes
[Check] Lock screen when system is going to sleep

If I disable everything in one of those two places, I don't get the
double locking.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1846899] Re: X won't start at boot with either nvidia driver on GeForce GT 730 (bionic)

2019-12-15 Thread Stephen Brown
The video card in question has died...
The machine wouldn't boot at all with the video card in the machine. So I think
the bug report should be retired, not so much resolved as unresolvable. I can't
collect any more data on the symptoms and I can't swear the problem wasn't an
early indication of hardware failure.

Thanks to all who had suggestions.

I did manage to try the NVidia 430 driver before it died. It didn't
work, but it had different symptoms. X wouldn't come up, but I could
ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a command line and switch back to nouveau, instead
of having to boot to command line.

It was replaced with an even older card (GeForce 9500 GT), which also
didn't work with the NVidia drivers, and had an unreliable fan, so I had
to put an extra fan in the case until I got around to applying a crowbar
to the notoriously tight wallet and get a brand new Radeon RX580.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1846899] Re: X won't start at boot with either nvidia driver

2019-10-05 Thread Stephen Brown
If it helps interpreting the logs: when the log file snapshot was taken,
I was of course running the Nouveau drivers, 'cause that's the only way
the system works. But the boot attempt immediately preceeding that was
with the NVidia 390 drivers installed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1846899] [NEW] X won't start at boot with either nvidia driver

2019-10-05 Thread Stephen Brown
Public bug reported:

The video card is a GeForce GT 730, which worked well with Ubuntu 16.04.
After changing to Xubuntu 18.04, I can only run the Nouveau driver and the lack
of acceleration is quite noticeable. When I try to enable the "tested" NVidia
driver (390), the system never presents a log-in prompt, I just get a colorful
display of large blinking gibberish. I have to go to the boot options, go
directly to root prompt, and remove the NVidia driver. This make the system
usable again, but I'm back to the Nouveau driver.
I get similar symptoms with version 340.107 of the NVidia driver.
It's a little hard to collect debug information when I can't get to a prompt to
look at log files... Suggestions are welcome.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1804029] [NEW] Touching on multiple touchscreens simultaneously breaks X11

2018-11-19 Thread Stephen D'Angelo
Public bug reported:

This bug is fixed in version 0.28.1, which is shipped with Cosmic. I am
requesting this be backported to Bionic. I know this was fixed
relatively recently, so I'm not sure if it's "in the queue" or not.

Here is the libinput bug report:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/issues/153

Here is the commit that fixes the bug:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-input-
libinput/commit/a759610292a53067fc811e70703b8dc0cb16

I have verified that installing the following debs from Cosmic fixes the
issue I am seeing:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1799875] Re: Kernel Crash - consisten when shutting down the system

2018-10-27 Thread Stephen Smith
Last evening I posted the tail end of the currentDmesg.txt (attached to
this ticket) to the linux kernel mailing list.

I received back the following [0]

The newer kernels (like 4.18) have checks regarding copies to userspace for
unwanted kernel memory exposure.
The check fails here. This particular copy was initiated by the binary nvidia
driver, so unfortunately we cannot help here. So either ask Nvidia for a fix
or (if that driver was installed with the Ubuntu software updater) Canonical.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1799875] Re: Kernel Crash - consisten when shutting down the system

2018-10-25 Thread Stephen Smith
I installed the upstream kernel[0] as requested in comment #3, ran
update-grub, booted into kernel 4.19 and then tried to shutdown the
system. Again, the system crashed.

Side note: installing linux-image-
unsigned-4.19.0-041900-generic_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_amd64.deb, and
linux-modules-4.19.0-041900-generic_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_amd64.deb
caused by video resolution to go to 640x480 (ugh). Removing 4.19 and
going back to 4.18 restored the resolution.

Anyway, kernel 4.19 from [0] did not fix the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1799875] Re: Kernel Crash - consisten when shutting down the system

2018-10-25 Thread Stephen Smith
> Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade?
This did not happen with 18.04LTS. I started seeing this after the update to
18.10.

The first time I tried to shut down the system since moving to 18.10 was
two nights ago (and therefore the first time I saw the issue).

Since I haven't ever tried to forcibly upgrade (normally I wait for
Ubuntu to push updates) I assume I am supposed to add the PPA and the
package manager will prompt me?

Or do I need to do something else to get the update installed?

Alternatively I don't mind following the steps in the Ubuntu build
instructions[1] if installing from the deb packages isn't "easy".

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button to Right (left-handed) in Settings

2018-09-12 Thread Stephen Allen
I found that in my situation it was the upgrade not working good with some
config settings in my ~/home. When I was beta testing, I don't think the
Ubuntu developers considered that many problems are associated with
upgrades. Once I did a clean install, this situation was gone.

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1751892] [NEW] Unable to set different Scale on different Monitors

2018-02-26 Thread Stephen Ostrow
Public bug reported:

My laptop screen is 3840x2160 while my external monitor is only
1680x1050. In order for the laptop monitor to be usable I have the
scaling set at 200 (this works wonderful). However, when I plug in my
external monitor it is scaled up to 200% as well making it unusable.

Attempting to scale one to 100 and the other 200 looks to be possible;
however, the Apply button keeps appearing and disappearing randomly with
no actual effect.

It looks like practically you can only set one scale for both monitors
even though the UI looks to be letting you do it.

I have tried this on Wayland and Xorg with similar results.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1749878] Re: GDM doesn't accept mouse clicks

2018-02-16 Thread Stephen Allen
@Daniel van Vugt:

OK Installed the downgrade. The only difference is that the mouse cursor
isn't visible at all. Prior, using the up-to-date version, the cursor
was shown, would move but wouldn't respond to clicks. HTH

Hi Daniel, thanks for the response.

1. No, not a touchpad. This is a workstation with regular MSFT type
keyboard.

2. Sure, will downgrade libinput and report back.

I get the same behaviour from gedit. It seems any application relying
on gnome-session running is going to hang. I would point at some Gnome
library as being the casue of this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1675364] Re: [Regression] xmir applications fail to render

2017-03-23 Thread Stephen M. Webb
It seems the difference between my two test machines is that one one I
had logged in to Unity 7 previously, and that left gnome-session-binary
running. After a reboot to kill all systemd --user units, konsole now
hangs on both test machines.

It looks like this problem is in konsole, which requires gnome-session
to be running in order to function normally.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1671731] Re: [xmir] closing an app while a child window is opened leaves an Xmir process opened eating 100% CPU

2017-03-20 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This is simple to reproduce. The application has disappeared from the
screen but continues to run.

It looks like qtmir is closing the window (as requested) but no word
gets out to the actual process (ie. there is no session management).
I'm suspecting the Unity 8 lifecycle for desktops is not in place yet.

Here's a snippet from $HOME/.cahe/upstart/unity8.log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668429] Re: X apps fail to launch with failure to open display (no Xmir running or no access to it)

2017-02-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The log shows Firefox is being run natively under Unity 8 (no Xmir).
Firefox is known to not be built natively for Mir, so it's not a
surprise that it it not start.

Assuming that an Xmir instance should be launched just in case for any
and all applications run under Unity 8 was purposefully disabled to
prevent unwanted empty black windows from covering the screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1656623] [NEW] create new folder, text display disapears

2017-01-15 Thread Stephen Matthias
Public bug reported:

After the most recent upgrade (It is now January 15, 2017 at 2:45 EST),
I right-click on the desktop. Then I select the "Create New Folder"
value. When I select the "Rename..." value and then click on the text
box, the monitor display disappears from view, although the keystrokes
are recorded. The folder name appears after I press Return but I have
no feedback from the monitor as I press they keyboard keys.

Trackpad works flawlessly on my ASUS Zenbook UX32VD except for this one
issue. It makes it incredibly frustrating to use the laptop. Tested on
Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1613708] Re: [regression] Xmir: Some buttons are unclickable after rotating the screen

2016-09-14 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Updated debdiff after adding new changelog and backporting to Mir 0.21.

** Attachment removed: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1613708/+attachment/4739347/+files/debdiff

** Attachment added: "debdiff for Xenial SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1613708/+attachment/4740857/+files/debdiff

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

XMir clients do not have their input transform matrix modified properly
when the screen dimensions and orientation change (ie. rotation).

This shows up primarily on Bq M10 tablets which rotate on startup.

  [Test Case]

Install XMir on a device that supports screen rotation. Connect a
client (using Libertine is the easiest way to do this). Attempt to use
direct or indirect pointer input on the right side of the screen. The
  bug is it does nothing.

  [Regression Potential]

This change affects only the XMir server. There is potential that XMir
functionality is compromized but mainline x.org functionality is
  unaffected.

This XMir patch update is pulled directly from Ubuntu current
development release "Yakkety Yak" where it has been in production for
more than 6 weeks without apparent regressions.

  [Other Info]

The patch update also includes bugfixes for bug #1617925, bug #1617932,
  and bug #1591356.
+
+ This patch differs from the patch in Ubuntu "Yakkety Yak" to compile
+ with Mir 0.21. The only functional difference is an extra message
+ logged when run against Mir 0.24.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1564920] [NEW] x.org server fails to start when $TMPDIR is set

2016-04-01 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Public bug reported:

When the Xmir server is run on a device or desktop under Unity 8 it
fails to start with the following error messages.

  [xkb] Can't rename /run/user/32011/confined/com.ubuntu.sdk/fileSgDXpU to
/tmp/server-B20D7FC79C7F597315E3E501AEF10E0D866E8E92.xkm, error: Invalid
cross-device link
  XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of
xkeyboard-config.
  (EE) Fatal server error:
(EE) Failed to activate core devices.(EE)

We traced the problem down to the fact that the $TMPDIR is set in the
environment and points to a confined location in the /run filesystem,
and x.org uses the hardcoded path of /tmp which is a different
filesystem. A Ubuntu-specific patch to the x.org server attempts to
rename the .xkm file across filesystems (which is not allowed).

To avoid this error the Ubuntu-speicific patch to cache the xkb file
should also patch the hardcoded /tmp to use $TMPDUR if it is set.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1526079] Re: Mouse cursor sometimes becomes invisible

2016-02-25 Thread Stephen Eisenhauer
Changing the resolution with xrandr has not been successful in bringing
the cursor back recently, but attempting to switch to another user (and
then returning to the original session) DOES cause the cursor to
reappear. This at least gives me a workaround (and hopefully hints at a
fix).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1526079] Re: Mouse cursor sometimes becomes invisible

2016-02-23 Thread Stephen Eisenhauer
Could you share a little technical background on how the BIOS could
affect what seems to be a problem manifested either in X or the Intel
display driver? I'm not saying it couldn't play a role, but it seems
extremely likely that the problem lies in one of those places.

I've been unsuccessful so far in attempts to update the BIOS, as Lenovo
makes this process somewhat more difficult for users without Windows.

The problem happened again today; While moving the cursor from monitor
to another, it disappeared, and now it is only drawn on the external
display. I can still hover/select/click things on the primary display,
but the cursor is not drawn graphically. I would still greatly
appreciate any suggestions for things that I can do when this does
happen which would help narrow down what is happening and lead me closer
to a repro.

** Description changed:

(This report is incomplete; I need some guidance regarding steps I can
take the next time this happens so I can gather better information to
  report.)

  What happens:

  1. I'll be working
  2. The mouse cursor will become invisible for no apparent reason, typically
on just one of my two monitors
  3. I'll either continue working (in which case the cursor will usually come
back for no apparent reason, eventually) or I'll restart X to get my cursor back

This happens to me at least once a week while I'm working, and has gone
on at least for 2 or 3 months if not longer. I think I first began
observing this while on Ubuntu 15.04, and it has persisted since
  upgrading to 15.10 in October.

There are things I try in order to force the cursor to reappear, to no
  avail, including:

  - Toggling org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active via gsettings
  - Switching to and from a TTY
  - Hovering over UI elements that force the cursor icon to change

I think changing the resolution via xrandr causes it to reappear, but I
- need to wait until the next time it happens to confirm this.
+ need to wait until the next time it happens to confirm this. EDIT:
+ Confirmed that changing resolution to something else and back using
+ xrandr DOES help.

I use a ThinkPad with an i7 with only integrated Intel graphics,
connected via dock to an external display. My display configuration is a
little unusual and uses hidpi, defined by the following commands:

  xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 2880x1620 --panning 2880x1620 --scale 1x1
--primary --dpi 250
xrandr --output DP2-1 --mode 2560x1440 --panning 3840x2160+2880+0 --scale
1.5x1.5 --dpi 144

3) What you expected to happen

Xorg never crashes due to segfaults.

4) What happened instead

Xorg crashes due to segfaults.

I have recently seen an increase in unexpected X crashes while using my
machine, sending me back to the login screen and losing the state of my
open applications.

I use a ThinkPad T540p with Intel graphics and Ubuntu 15.10 (upgraded
from 15.04). I use Xrandr to configure and position my external and
internal displays, including the use of the --panning/--scale/--dpi
options to help my external display behave more like my internal HiDPI
display (in case that's relevant to this problem).

I heavily use PhpStorm, a JetBrains IDE from their IDEA family built in
Java. The last two times this crash has happened to me (Friday and
today), I was interacting with the IDE at the time. I saved a copy of
Xorg.0.log.old both times and will attempt to attach both to this report
(their backtraces differ a bit). During the first crash I believe I was
simply interacting with the UI in some way; During the second crash, I
had just clicked the window decoration's "X" button to close PhpStorm.

Please let me know if there's something I can do to help diagnose the
crash further. In the meantime, I've installed the -dbg packages for
xorg-core and xorg-video-intel in the hopes that future backtraces might
be more useful. If I see this crash again, I'll post the log here in the
comments.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5

2015-11-04 Thread Stephen Ranger
Yes, both are installed. Looking at the segmentation fault hotspot log
from my java application, it says libwayland and mesa-egl are being
loaded. I don't have gnome-session-wayland even installed and mesa
shouldn't be loaded if fglrx is being used. I've attached the java log
as well.

wily-proposed boots fine but the following errors are in the xorg log

[48.168] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

 (attached full log)

glxgears works, but there's still these errors which seem important.
I've only noticed with Java/JOGL application so far but it did not
happen in 15.04 with the 2:15.200-0ubuntu4.2 driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip

2015-11-01 Thread Cass Stephen
Under Ubuntu-Mate 15.04 only my wallpaper, scroll-sliders, and right window
edges were garbled.
After do-release-upgrade to 15.10 all of the things are hashed garbled tearing
whatever, even the text, even inside terminal windows.

Cory Davis (corzneffect) is correct;
Downgrading the video acceleration from "sna" to "uxa" works as a temporary fix:

#Create a config file;
sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

#Add the following lines
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

#reboot

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1454473] Re: In Ubuntu 15.04, simply moving the mouse via touchpad scrolls the window

2015-09-08 Thread Stephen Jones
Exactly the same experience as Franck971 - touchpad/mouse does not
function

Hi. Same problem 100% time with fresh Ubuntu 15.04 EFI on Acer Aspire E15 E51
Very annoying with Nautilus (almost unusable)
Synaptics touchpad is very unstable with this laptop (also not detected at boot
50% time)
I'm planing to move from 15.04 due to these issues

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1450089] Re: fglrx causes ubuntu to hang before login

2015-08-28 Thread Stephen Ranger
I tested The 15.7 drivers from AMD today under the desktop drivers and
they worked (though gnome is a bit sluggish). Also, I saw that fglrx
2:15.200-0ubuntu4-2 was released and that seems to have worked for me
better than the AMD driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1470862] Re: When using fglrx module, the virtual consoles are blank and useless

2015-08-14 Thread Stephen Yu
I have the same problem after upgraded from Ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04. My
graphic card is AMD R7 260X using fglrx-amdcccle-updates
2:15.200-0ubuntu4 driver. This driver seems working fine except I got
blank screen when I tried to switch to virtual consoles with ctl+alt+fx
keys.

The open source driver radeon is even worse, it randomly crashs X and
get to the login screen and you can't log back it from the login screen.
Instead, you need to sudo killall Xorg.

Tried many suggestions so far from the web, it didn't help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1453889] [NEW] Dual Monitor Setup is Mirroring Instead of Spanning

2015-05-11 Thread Stephen Rasku
Public bug reported:

I was running Utopic and when I came in this morning my monitors
wouldn't come out of power-save mode. I logged in remotely and rebooted
the system. The monitors now work but they are both displaying the same
content (mirroring) while they were spanning before. I have now
upgraded to vivid but it hasn't resolved the issue.

I believe I am also seeing the same thing. A live image present me with
a choice to try or install and 'try' results in a blank screen (hard
crash?) with no ttys available.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1450089] [NEW] fglrx causes ubuntu to hang before login

2015-04-29 Thread Stephen Ranger
Public bug reported:

After updating Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 to 15.04, uninstalling old AMD 14.12

post; I'll supply anything that's requested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1448775] Re: Unable to login after upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 possible XOrg crash

2015-04-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
demesg contains several dups of the following error.

[ 637.133657] traps: compiz[5430] trap invalid opcode ip:7fe2bd6f05f5
sp:7fff0b63f0b8 error:0
[ 868.799930] traps: compiz[6021] trap invalid opcode ip:7f0fab07c5f5
sp:7fff64019268 error:0

It would be helpful if a stacktrace of compiz could be obtained.
