[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-03-13 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, thanks for all the feedback. Given that the boxes go away when
logged out, and that Denver is on -radeon whereas Andreas is -intel, it
is likely sounding not to be a driver issue. It is probably compiz
doing something wrong.

I see there are similar bugs against compiz, #940603 and #753606, but
the symptoms differ, so not setting as dupe. (940603 is also against
chromium, so may be pertinent)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-03-07 Thread Denver Gingerich
Hi Bryce,

Yes, I just reproduced it with mesa 8.0.1. Here's some dpkg output from
my system (I dist-upgraded around 6pm Eastern yesterday, 2012-03-06):

$ dpkg -l '*mesa*'
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

ii libgl1-mesa-gl 8.0.1-0ubuntu2 free implementation of the OpenGL API -- GLX
un libgl1-mesa-gl none (no description available)

un mesag3 none (no description available)
un xlibmesa-dri none (no description available)
un xlibmesa3 none (no description available)

So I believe this issue still exists with mesa 8.0.1.

Fabio, I tried dragging with Alt-LeftClick and that drags the window
behind the white window, not the white window itself (as I had
expected). Everything else looks the same as before so I think there's
no need to upload new screenshots.

2012-03-07 Thread Denver Gingerich
The issue I reported above happened with Chromium, just as before. I
believe the sequence of events this time was: highlight text in address
bar (via double-click), copy the text (via Ctrl-C), create a new tab
(via Ctrl-T), paste the text (via Ctrl-V). I think that the box
appeared at the moment I created the new tab, but I could be wrong.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-25 Thread Denver Gingerich
Hi Fabio,

I did not specifically try dragging it in that way before I closed it
(by logging out). I suspect it would not have worked (the drag
operation would have applied to the window behind it) because generally
I was not able to interact with the white window itself (operations
always applied to the window behind it, as if the white window wasn't
there). It's possible that I dragged a window behind the white window
using Alt+left click; I certainly never noticed a case where I used
Alt+left click and happened to drag the white window.

When I logged out of my account this morning, the white box disappeared
(it was not present at the login screen). And when I logged back in, it
was not present either. I'm upgrading now so hopefully some of the

very difficult to reproduce.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
Here's what I mentioned to Bryce about this issue in a comment on bug
#933778 (a likely unrelated bug):

I also noticed (and this is probably the topic for a new bug report),
that a particular operation in Chromium caused a new window to appear,
which is completely white, always on top, not associated with any
application, and difficult/impossible to close. I noticed that after
this happened, compiz is now consistently using exactly 24% of my CPU
according to top. The particular operation seemed to involve having the
autocomplete dropdown activated while also doing Ctrl+N, though I can't
remember exactly what combination of things were going on at that time.
I'll provide more details if it happens again, but the window is still
there if there's some diagnostics I can run to see what it is.

Since that was written, I no longer see compiz using 24% CPU; it has
fallen back to normal levels (about 2-5%).

Note that though this white window is always on top, it is not
clickable; any mouse operations affect the window behind it (for
example, I can select text in a browser window that is behind it and the
cursor changes to the text select cursor when I hover over text in a
window behind the white window).

As you can see, I was able to take screenshots of this issue. It seems
that the white window is tied to all workspaces, but not to the X
display itself (since showing the workspace switcher moves the white
window onto each of the displayed workspaces; it does not keep the white
window on top of the workspace switcher itself).

If you need any more info about this issue while it is still present,
please let me know soon. I plan to logout and log back in by the end of
today as it's impeding my workspace. The bug does not seem easy to
reproduce; I haven't seen a new white window since I managed to create
one yesterday. The steps for reproducing in the quoted section above
are the best I have.

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
As a follow-up to my original summary of this issue, I noticed also that
the white window appears in the lock screen as well. So it obscures the
password entry box if that box decides to show up on the monitor where
the white window is. Also, once the login screen times out (ie. goes
back to a black screen), the white window remains on the screen, overtop
of the otherwise black screen.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to restore it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Interesting, thanks for the pictures Denver. So, this is starting to
look much like a compositing issue of some sort. Let's check a couple
things to be sure:

First, try logging in to Unity2D and see if you can reproduce it there.
If so, then also try Gnome Classic (No Effects) - install the 'gnome-
panel' package and that should add this option to your login session.

If you find it only occurs in Unity, then it may be a mesa issue. I
have a PPA with a mesa update we're currently testing, which fixes some
random bugs on -intel. I suspect it won't fix this bug, but it's
probably worth testing. Please install this PPA and see if it makes any
difference: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/mesa-8.0.1/

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
Hi Fabio,

The white window remains after switching to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-
Alt-F3) then back to X (Ctrl-Alt-F7).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
Hi Bryce,

I can't reproduce this bug reliably at all so I'd prefer to try things
with the existing white window that hasn't disappeared yet (but that I
will be getting rid of this evening sometime, as it's getting in my
way). But I can try those options you mentioned anyway and hope it
reproduces itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
This is probably a dupe of bug #936758.

I'm growing more certain that updating to 8.0.1 via this PPA will resolve it:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/mesa-8.0.1/

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) = mesa (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-22 Thread Denver Gingerich
Hi Bryce,

That is good to know. Are there anymore details I should retrieve/tests
I should run before I logout/login and dist-upgrade to get the
hopefully-fixed mesa package?

By the way, the mesa bug and this bug suggest the problem is in the
Intel graphics driver somewhere.  I'm not using Intel graphics at all;
I'm instead using the radeon driver (with a Radeon HD 5000 series chip).
Just thought I'd mention in case it's relevant.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 935630] Re: White rectangular

2012-02-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Uros, do you have a digital camera or cell phone? Take a picture of
the screen showing the white box. (The size, position, color, etc. can
clue developers into how the video memory is misbehaving.)

About how long after the session start does the white box appear? Does
logging out and logging back in make it go away? How about switching to
a virtual terminal and back? (ctrl+alt+f2, ctrl+alt+f7)

2012-02-21 Thread Uros
I will try to reproduce and make a photo. Yesterday the box covered almost
80% of the screen. I think it started after few minutes and logging of
makes it go away.

I have white rectangular on the top left of the screen. It is half of
the screen wide and two icons in unity high. It is covering the icons
and the destop. Print screen does not take the picture of it. I have
it there for a week at least. It is not there from the start of
session, but it shows up latter. I do not now why it shows. I was
  using chrome and update only.
