[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-24 Thread Luke Sticka
I have not experienced any particular problems with Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D
using this driver.

However, I have experienced two issues which cause a minor concern for
me.

If I scroll quickly enough, I have a diagonal 'line' which runs on my
monitor from its "northwest" to its "southeast" corner. It's not really
a line per se, rather the illusion of a line, as it appears that one
half of the screen is refreshing "before" the other half. I am assuming
for now that this is more to do with my refresh rate, but I must say
that I did not experience this on the same computer two months ago when
I was running Windows XP.

Additionally, on shutdown I no longer see an account of the computer's
"final processes" in the terminal, or whatever was previously displayed.
Instead, I get a distorted image of my desktop background (which is
currently set to rotate through the default desktops).

Aside from this however, it does appear that the card is functioning
correctly, and applications which used to drag due to graphic content
(i.e, Software Center) are now quite visibly faster and more responsive.

I'm currently at work and away from the computer I'm using Ubuntu on,
and I'd like to provide more comprehensive details if they are
warranted. Please advise. :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-24 Thread Steffen Goetz
I can confirm #109. I'm using a GeForce FX 5200 card. I've tried to
force unity to start by adding UNITY_FORCE_START=1 to /etc/environment.
Unity starts but is unusable (icons missing and very very slow), so I
assume that Unity simply does not work with an old card like this. I
will stay with Unity 2D for now.

However, package nvidia-173 from ubuntu-proposed is installable and
working, so I think this bug is solved :-)

had trouble is probably having general X configuration problems, rather

I pined down nvidia on the 96 driver. They have no desire to do
anything to update or maintain this driver, nor or they interested in
allowing any one else to fix it. Is it possible that the open source
driver could be made to work.I have tried the latest mageia release with
same kerrneol as 12.04 . It shows my card as a nv11 which is what
12.04 shows as an open sorce. driver. It works great. Just a question.
thanks

Hello, new Ubuntu user over here. I followed the directions as linked
by Chris, and apt-get continues to tell me the following:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
nvidia-173 : Depends: xorg-video-abi-10 but it is not installable
Recommends: nvidia-settings but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I noticed that the instructions were for Aptitude - is this the correct
procedure for apt-get? I do not see any new drivers under System
Settings > Additional Drivers either.

2012-07-17 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Jean-Baptiste, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nvidia-graphics-drivers-173-updates into precise-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-173-updates/173.14.35-0ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-05 Thread Louis Simons
With the updates in precise-proposed, does this mean that the suggested
means of installing the nvidia-173 (or nvidia-96) packages will be via
"Additional Drivers" in the near future? It sounds like manual driver
installation from NVidia is already compatible with the precise xserver-
xorg-core package, but I'm happy to wait a bit if there is a smoother
option to be deployed soon.

Is there a way we could test out the packages in precise-proposed (is
that from the milestone-propsed PPA?) and provide feedback (if that
would be helpful)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-04 Thread linuxbastard
Hi Alberto,

I've noticed the updated driver, how do I go about installing this? I
have installed the x-swat repo and currently have the nvidia-current
driver activated but not being used.

I tried downloading the nvidia-graphcis-drivers-173-updates deb and
installing with dpkg, which installed fine. I activated the driver in
additional drivers and rebooted but I ended up with a 640x480
resolution. And that's where I'm stuck.

Any help or instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-04 Thread Alberto Milone
SRU request:

nvidia-graphics-drivers-173-updates and nvidia-graphics-drivers-173
(173.14.35-0ubuntu0.1) are in precise-proposed. They update the legacy
driver so that it works again with the Xserver in Precise. No
regressions are expected as the driver couldn't even be installed
before.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-01 Thread Malcolm_C
I just checked the packages list for precise
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/ and it shows the following for Nvidia
173, i.e version...30, not ...35.

nvidia-173 (173.14.30-0ubuntu11) [restricted] NVIDIA binary Xorg
driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
nvidia-173-dev (173.14.30-0ubuntu11) [restricted] NVIDIA binary Xorg
driver development files
nvidia-173-updates (173.14.30-0ubuntu7) [restricted] NVIDIA binary
Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
nvidia-173-updates-dev (173.14.30-0ubuntu7) [restricted] NVIDIA binary
Xorg driver development files

Am I looking in the wrong place or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks for any pointers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread NoOp
While I know that glxgears is not a reliable benchmark, the following
demonstrates the issue between nvidia-96 and nouveau. I have two
machines with the same hardware, and both use an nVidia Quatro4 900 XGL.
Both are running as non-Unity (gnome-classic) & both are set to use
compiz identical (I can easily rotate the desktops w/Ctrl-Alt-mouse &
flib between w/Ctrl-Alt-rightarrow etc). The difference is that one is
running 11.04 w/nVidia-96, the other is 12.04 w/nouveau. Running
glxgears on each one results in:

Glxgears on the on running 11.04

approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

Quite a difference in performance between the two.

That said: I fully realise that Ubuntu can't release an updated nvidia-96
until nVidia does. And from following this nvidia forum thread, it doesn't look
like it will be anytime soon:

So for those of us that require nvidia-96, my suggestion is to follow the nvida
forum thread instead of creating a forum here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread w3bmast3r101
I have been following this thread for about a month and thought I'd
offer what I did to get 3d acceleration working. (NOT USING NVIDIA-173)
I myself have a: NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1) and
the drivers that were included with the default install were the:
Nouveau drivers and they were dog slow.

However, Ubuntu also has the DRI experimental package: libgl1-mesa-dri-
experimental and that made performance comparable to the Nvidia binary
drivers. (For my card; in this one instance.) So if you want to give it
a try:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libgl1-mesa-dri-
experimental

Then reboot and see how well it works for you.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Hi Patola, I'm running a notebook that uses a Pentium-M processor
(necessitates the non-PAE kernel) and an nVidia Geforce4 Ti 4200 Go (AGP
8X) video card. I've been using Ubuntu 32-bit on this notebook since Dapper
Drake, and the last Live-CD that would run properly on this computer was
8.04.4. Hardy Heron used the nv driver to support this video card, but
Ubuntu has replaced nv with nouveau which does not support this video card.
I am currently running xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.4-1ubuntu4 (from Oneiric)
to be able to use nvidia-96.43.20ubuntu6 which is based on the latest
available -96 driver from nVidia. This is because nvidia-96 is not yet ABI
compatible with x.org ABI 11 or newer. I hope that clarifies my situation
as it applies to nvidia-96. I also look forward to nVidia bringing out
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.21 to support the newer ABI's.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Patola
I have a GeForce 440 MX, it uses driver -96 and worked perfectly with
the Xorg that comes with 12.04. 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.2. However, I
installed the latest -96 driver from NVIDIA site: NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-96.43.20-pkg1.run

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Michael Stephenson
I only mentioned that I upgraded to avoid any further hassle using legacy
drivers, I agree with you entirely, but I guess I chose the path of least
resistance and fell in line.
However as I ranted further up the real answer to this is to stop revving to
the newest bleeding edge x server all the bloody time!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Daniel Cantarín
Michael:
thank you very much for the explanation. Since yesterday, after installing the
last nvidia-current version from x-swat ppa, i didn't suffered any reboot or
hang yet. But if the symptoms come back, i'll try the method you posted here
(and, of course, post the results).

[offtopic]

On the other hand, i'd like to say something about your suggestion on
upgrading: NO.
That's exactly the kind of things Wintel did to every one of us during the last
two decades, and is not the answer.
There was no problem with 173 drivers, there's no problem with the hardware,
the problem lies in the distribution changes.

I don't pretend to be naggy here: i love Ubuntu, love gnu/linux, and it
dramatically changed my life for good (as a developer) when it gave me
the chance to go away from Microsoft. So i'm grateful, and now i tell
everyone to get into FLOOS and the community-made software world. That's
the reason i can't stand before your recomendation of changing the video
card, and of course then the motherboard, which also implies almost
everytime a new processor, sometimes new ram, not to mention the rest of
the "legacy" peripherals, because of a package dependency problem.

The hardware is fine, the distro runs fine on it, it's just a package change
what's bringing all the buzz here. I have a GeForce 9800 GT, 512 MB DDR3, PCIE,
and can't install the driver that always worked for me because of that
"xorg-video-abi-10" package.
(To be fair, NVidia always had A LOT of trouble, and responsability, regarding
graphic cards drivers: anyone tried TNT2 on Win2k?)

What i would like is to get the ability to change my current video driver using
"jockey-gtk". That is: selecting 173 for stability, and selecting 295 for new
technologies testing purposes. Much more than changing the hardware, i would
check for some hack to tell 173 that "abi-10" is installed even when it's not,
and tell it then to use whatever other package is out there replacing "abi-10".
Of course, that would be a lot of work. But the consequences are: a lot of
people does not need to buy a new PC.

[/offtopic]

Anyway, i'm sure that sooner or later we'll have a 173.14.35 package on
ubuntu repos, and #948053 will at last be closed. I'll be patient a few
months.

Thanks for the speedy reply, yes perhaps it's time to upgrade the
motherboard, it's a shame though since 11.10 runs fine on this PC.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Michael Stephenson
I think my last one was nvidia 8600gs pci-e and I upgraded to this card:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0083IH9WI/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?tag=jupitebroadc-21

It seems that no agp cards really exist for the new chipsets
unfortunately :( Maybe it's time to get a motherboard with pci-e and
perhaps onboard graphics with a newer nvidia chipset?

Michael, just curious to know from which Nvidia to which newer card you
upgraded. I have a fx5500 on AGP and as far as I can see the choice to
upgrade is very limited.
Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-16 Thread Michael Stephenson
Personally I have solved this issue by getting a newever nvidia card however I
wanted to try and help you guys out, dkms automatically builds and rebuilds
kernel modules when it detects a change in kernel, which means when you install
a new kernel from the repo, when you boot up it will take a couple of minutes
or so longer because it is automatically compiling the new nvidia driver.
So I had a poke about with making dkms work for the new 173 driver and here is
what I did maybe someone can get this working and post it as a guide for others
to use:

cd ~/Downloads

wget ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.35/NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run

chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run -x

cd ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1/usr/src/nv

gedit ./dkms.conf

Paste in this crap:

PACKAGE_NAME="nvidia-173"
PACKAGE_VERSION="173.14.35"
CLEAN="make clean"
BUILT_MODULE_NAME[0]="nvidia"
DEST_MODULE_NAME[0]="nvidia_173"
MAKE[0]="make module KERNDIR=/lib/modules/$kernelver IGNORE_XEN_PRESENCE=1
IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 SYSSRC=$kernel_source_dir LD=/usr/bin/ld.bfd"
DEST_MODULE_LOCATION[0]="/kernel/drivers/char/drm"
AUTOINSTALL="yes"

Save and exit

sudo dkms add ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1/usr/src/nv

Check to see /usr/src/nvidia-173-173.14.35 exists

sudo dkms build nvidia-173/173.14.35

This is where it fails if this had work the next step would probably be:

sudo dkms install nvidia-173/173.14.35

Since I don't have an older card any more I don't have the necessary
drive to follow through on this but I'm sure some of you guys still hit
by the bug do, so go make it work and post the solution!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-15 Thread Daniel Cantarín
Since upgrading to 12.04 (from 10.04), my system is unstable. Graphics drivers
seems to be the problem, as it's stable without nvidia drivers loaded.
Drivers version 173 worked fine for my GeForce 9800 GT during the last years
(with the exception of not letting me test WebGL on Firefox).

I'm a developer, so i needed to check WebGL. For that reason i installed some
new drivers version directly from nvidia a few months ago on my 10.04
installation (can't remember the version number). Eventually had to go back to
173 (from repos).
That's the reason i don't want to download drivers from nvidia site again.

So, today i tried to install the debian's version of 173.14.35:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-173xx

Had to add "http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main non-free" and
"http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main contrib" to "/etc/apt/sources.list".
This gave me some trouble with packages and versions: even had to uninstall
"nvidia-current", and therefore "ubuntu-desktop". I did all this on root's
recovery console.
By some magic, after restarting everything was working; even unity 3d and
compiz. So i commented those repos in "sources.list", and reinstalled
everything removed in the process (aptitude removed a lot of packages linked to
wine, so i did "apt-get install wine" and the came back).
However, things eventually became very unstable: on some restarts there was no
3d subsystem (no unity, no d3d on wine), some other tries the compiz unity
plugin reported crashes, and so on.

Right now i'm removing everything regarding that 173.14.35-1 version, and
sticking to nvidia-current from x-swat ppa. I'll wait until we have an ubuntu
package for ".35".
But if everything keeps this unstable, i'll have no other choice but to go away
from ubuntu and try other distros. (I'd hate to, but unfortunatelly it's giving
me an unacceptable instability for a workstation).

Thankyou Michael Stephenson. That was all I need to know; rebuild the
Nvidia driver and it works. I'll keep that in mind until Cannonical gets
it.

Until I have a clue, I'm booting in the previous kernel.

Can Alberto Milone please also put this driver in the Ubuntu

with older hardware? nVidia did their bit, now it is Canonical's time to
do theirs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-06-02 Thread Bib
For those having issues with nouveau, I discovered on a clean
oneiric->precise install (because of unavailable non-pae liveCd), that
my issues with nouveau had disapeard, beautiful screen, clean cursor
etc..., although poor perfs... I don't know how this happened, but after
checking I learnt the driver used is vesa ! I don't know how to use vesa
on my ugly system. A pity precise follows the win7 not supporting these
~old cards (mine V28).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-05-31 Thread rpkrawczyk
I have the same problem with a GeForce 420 on 12.04 (precise):

> lspci
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 MX 420]
(rev a3)

Performance is really poor (windows lag behind) and the whole desktop is not
very usable. Nouveau is installed in version:
ii libdrm-nouveau1a 2.4.32-1ubuntu1
Userspace interface to nouveau-specific kernel DRM services --
runtime
ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
1:0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2 X.Org X server -- Nouveau display
driver

Which workaround should I try?

2012-05-24 Thread Paul Castle
I'm needing the 96 driver too (Old MX400 card). Noveau drivers just not
giving me the performance I need.

I am probably going to try the #7 & 8 suggestion. It is a new build PC
so if I wreck it not much lost. Can always start again (and maybe try a
different graphics card if I have anything newer or an (ATI or SIS
card).

2012-05-20 Thread Philip Wyett
On the 173.14.34 driver we have an issue. I have manually installed it
on a 12.04 system and 'glx' does not load.

See: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2557504

The 2D does and the driver installs and runs Ok, just no 3D, which tends
to be a problem. :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-05-09 Thread Danny Adair
@Timo #46 "subscribe to this bug [...] and wait" is not an option after
booting into a broken X (NVIDIA 8400 GS).

@Nicolas #7 / #8 Thank you, the downgrade worked fine - while I waited
for my new graphics card to arrive... The NZ$80 card (NVIDIA GT 520)
arrived the next day. I removed the oneiric source and pin again, reran
update/dist-upgrade and then installed nvidia-current. All working now.

@Timo #9 What's "silly and dangerous" is not mentioning a showstopper in
the release notes. Esp. when it is being described as "well known".

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-05-06 Thread picomike
As Tom Cornell said in #24, my GeForce Go 7300 works now perfectly with
current nvidia drivers (using the /etc/environmet change to bypass the
blacklist), so at least this graphics card shouldn't be blacklisted
anymore. I didn't even try this before because in Oneiric, current
nvidia drivers caused compiz to freeze.

Thanks Tom. No need for 173 drivers now :)

This is exactely the same situation (wt regards to nvidia) as was in
Oneiric-Release-date:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OneiricOcelot/ReleaseNotes#Graphics_and_Display

In case of customer-satisfaction (business related) & here: support-
forums-satisfaction ;-)

Wouldn't it be nice to have it added?

@ pedropeixoto: You're not catching the point, sry. nvidia-96/nvidia-173
is about older graphics-cards, not beeing sold anymore. Even though it's
nice of you to reflect the enourmouse work/relative success of the
bumblebee-team to have hybrid-graphicscards to workout in some way in
Linux.

@ to whom it may concern:

Somehow or another this showstopper needs definetly beeing mentioned in

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes (known issues)

Cannot find a n y mentioning wordings there yet ???

Mainly this could help 2 r e d u c e embarassment of interested "human
beeings" & poor feedback along "Precise".

2012-05-04 Thread John von Holten
I have a GeForce Go N11 video card, and after upgrading to 12.04 my screen is
about 2/3 of what it used to be.
I tried to increase the resolution, but it did not work.
I checked and I am using the nouveau driver. There are no other drivers
available.
I guess this is all related to this bug. Does that sound correct? Thanks.

There is some discussion in the Nvidia forum at

Quote from #15 "We're working on new ABI support for legacy branches right now;
we're very sorry for the delays, we've been very busy with other stuff."
So there is still hope that updated drivers will be made available by Nvidia.

For the time being, In my opinion it would have been necessary to put a warning
into the release notes of Ubuntu 12.04.

I've got a slow computer and during the upgrade I by chance even saw the text
"removing nvidia-96" scrolling by, but at that moment it was already far too
late to think about staying on Oneiric.

FYI, Nicolas' suggestion #7 and #8 worked perfectly for me.

After downgrade of Xorg and reboot, no X was configured. I dLogged into

After reboot all was perfectly OK with graphics. My WLAN network cards
didn't initialise on first reboot, but was fine on second reboot --
probably totally unrelated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-04-28 Thread Tom Cornell
Regarding the workaround in response #13: My GeForce Go 7300 card is now
able to run Unity 3d with nvidia-current and the change to
/etc/environment from the comment. So it may not be necessary to switch
to the nouveau driver, at least for this card, and it may not be
necessary to use the 173 driver. I'm not sure when the last time was
that I could use nvidia-current -- I have been having to use 173 for
several releases now. Not sure yet what performance will be like, but so
far so good.
