[UC] Real World

2004-03-17 Thread David Miller
The article about the "Real World" in the Inq. this morning made we
want to pack my bags and leave Filthasmellphia for good - and I was born here.
It is the nightmare that was the Convention Center all over again.
Imagine, some fool wants to come to this town - produce a show, maybe spend some
money and provide mucho exposure to the young MTV audience. The city then
allows the "welcoming committee" to put some bullhorn blasting thugs on the
street toting a giant inflatable rat - this helps, how? It is almost as if the
powers that be in Phila. are actively trying to motivate anyone with a
nickel or a future nickel (the debacle that was the closing of Love Park to
skaters) to pay in taxes to leave. If it wasn't so sad and misguided it would
be funny.

Jonathan,

Yours may be a bad choice of words, since one of the delivery men was
recently killed in Royal.
I think it was an "accident" as "benign" as one of the coworkers dropping
a gun, intended for "protection".
It had been hidden among stacked boxes.

This is a chance to for me to say, I'd like to see MANY changes in our
gun laws.
The best defense is common sense.

*

Back to PIZZA,
I had a nightmare experience with a pizza from Fiesta. The memory can
still make me retch.

I have had wonderful experience with Colonial's Pizza.
And the only time I ever had a delivery problem, the owner gave me a
freebie nosh at my next visit.

But, for me, the best Pizza (and the best cheese steaks) in UC are at
47th and Woodland.
Everything is very handmade. Pizza crusts are crisp. Sandwich rolls are
given a final broil for warmth and texture. They don't deliver, but
there is lots of free parking. Elani and Anastasio have loyal staffs and
hold down a tough corner of our neighborhood.

Best!
Liz

Re: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers

2004-03-17 Thread HarvestMoon3
Similarly, I (and others) boycott Fiesta Pizza -- due to their refusal to
stop their delivery people from driving and parking ON the sidewalk. Haven't
noticed it going on as much recently (maybe they've had a change of heart,
like Ghadaffi --however you spell his name.)

We had numerous discussions with the owners about the sidewalk parking/
driving problem (This goes back 4 or 5 years ago. Many people were involved:
neigbors, SHCA officers, police, parking authority officers and the head of
the parking authority, etc.) The Fiesta owners always said they would stop
the sidewalk parking -- but, they never did. Never, never, never -- even
the same day of our discusssions/ meetings! A Fiesta delivery guy even had
the audacity to honk at us to get us out of the way, as a few of us were
gathered ON THE SIDEWALK in front of Fiesta, simply talking. I refused to
move. His car drove up the sidewalk and edged up to me. He honked
continuously, and finally backed up a little, and parked on the sidewalk in
front of the store next to Fiesta. There was open parking, in fact, in
front of Fiesta (on the street), but, no, that was apparently not suitable.

So, I don't think much of the current owners and won't patronize their
establishment. They don't seem to give a damn about our neighborhood.

So, that's my story. and I'm sticking to it.

2004-03-17 Thread Pete Coyle
Here's the inside dope,
I work for a set design shop, we we're going to be building the set
for Real World. Our shop is small and non-union, but we work with the
unions all the time. Many productions are a mixture of union, and non.
What B&M screwed up was, they came into town and made a deal with the
city and that was all. They didn't listen to the advice of the Film
Office, and they hired some company from outside the city to do demo,
and then decided to talk to the Unions.
This is clearly a Union town, and not making the proper deals with them
is stupid. By the time they got around to negotiating, they were
already operating in bad faith.

oh well

I have a favorite joint that hasn't been mentioned yet. California Pizza at
about 33rd and Powelton is where I order from more often than not. I like
their sausage and pepperoni the best...or what I like to call "the heart
stopper". AND, I have never been served roaches with my pie!

I don't know how far they go as far as delivery, but they do deliver to my
house on the 500 S. block of Melville St. (between 45th and 46th, and
Larchwood and Baltimore Aves).

Hope that gives you another option.

BTW, it took pizza to get me to post a message for the first time...who
would've guessed with all the important (or ridiculous depending on who you
are) discussions that happen each day.

Please, you are talking about THE REAL WORLD here. If anything, it's a
negative. I've watched many a Real World (the show always amazes me, like
the compulsion to stare at a highway wreak), and in NO WAY did that ever
attract me to go and visit the host city, or put that city in a more
positive light.

If people require the buzz of a type of show like RW to get off their ass
and visit or move to a place, then those aren't people that will do the
place any good.

Philly has a great rep already, RW would do nothing for it.

As far as insurance goes, I use Nationwide - they have an agent at 47th
and Pine, Lenny Torrence, who's very easy to deal with, and as a former
contractor, also understands dealing with houses like ours. They're no
more expensive than any other company, and when I had a claim three
months into my home ownership, they paid up about what I expected. I
don't have his number with me, but his agency is listed in the phone
book under Nationwide.

Hey all-

I have two other recommendation requests to add to all the others:

Anyone have recommendations for someone/people to obtain and install a
fence? Neighbors of ours used someone who will no longer take on jobs
in Philly. Hmm.

And how about some good homeowners insurance/agent? I think we've
finally cleared our washout period following our somewhat financially
lucrative but insurance damaging run in with a possibly overzealous
public adjustor. This has kept us from being able to refinance. Thank
goodness rates are still pretty low.

Names of people to avoid would be welcomed as well.

In the interest of sharing this information with all on the list, why
not 'reply to all'?

Thanks,
Ricky Moreau

RE: [UC] MTV vs. Philly: who is the loser?

2004-03-17 Thread Christy Bracken
Sarah,

My thoughts EXACTLY. I think Philadelphia in general has a bit of a
self-esteem/image problem, and I believe this was a really good opportunity
(now lost) for the city to shine. Not to mention word of this hullaballoo is
sure to get around, and may well cause other productions (who might have
been toying with the idea of shooting in our fair city) to shy away from it
now, lest they encounter the same aggravation. I don't watch MTV or the Real
World, but I have to say that I would have tried to tune in once in a while
to see how the city was being presented---how it might be coming across to
people in other parts of the country.

I think Philadelphia is a gem of a (very livable) city and not a lot of
people outside the area know about it or understand it. And it's sad that
now we've missed out on an opportunity to show off for once, rather than
play second fiddle to DC and NYC.

Christy

From: Sarah Scheckter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I think you're wrong. Although "The Real World" itself is a stupid excuse
for entertainment, having the hype and the positive focus on Philly would
have been good for the city in many ways.
Having the show set here, with Philly's name in the title, would have
shown that this city is on par with Chicago, Paris, NY, and other places
the show has taken place in the past.
It might, as some people have surmised, have attracted more young people
(esp. grads of our area colleges) to stay in this city. Philadelphia is
still losing population, and the 'brain drain' is one leak we could really
use some help in stemming.
While I love the affordability of this city, and while I respect "living
wage" and unionization arguments, Philadelphia could really use some
better city planning, administration, and reputation. By being unable to
reach a union/MTV compromise, Philly has shot itself in the foot.

I do agree that what the unions did at the convention center was a fiasco. I
work in union atmospheres and have never run across that type of
uncooperativeness at other places. But in the entertainment business unions
are necessary to make it possible to earn a living. Otherwise, companies
like MTV and Disney will use non professionals (students, interns, fame
seekers) to do professional work. The catch is that these non professionals
are training for jobs that don't exist because they already are the
replacements for the professionals.

Chestnut is the local best, in a highfalutin kind of way, but we don't
seem to have a really GOOD parlor.
Of course, I'm defining GOOD pizza as the thin-crusted floppy NYC stuff
one gets at Lorenzos on South, or Marios in Mt. Airy.

RE: [UC] best pizza joint that delivers

2004-03-17 Thread LowryV
We have never bought pizza from the Wurst House but until last Fall always had good
Italian hoagies from there, but since then they have changed their ingredients or
something because they are not as fresh or tasty. However, their BLTs and Reubens are
wonderful. For pizza we like Allegro, Colonial and Fiesta.

I recently swore off the Wurst house. The pizza was always pretty
nasty, although the strombolis weren't bad. Problem was they just kept
messing up the orders. Often, I'd get there to pick up, and they'd have
forgotten the order, or burned it and started over. While I waited, it
seemed like the delivery guy was always showing up and telling the boss
that the people he was delivering to weren't there, or claimed they
hadn't ordered anything. A few minutes later the people at the correct
address would call to find out where their pizza was

I've switched to Royal for strombolis, but the answer to the quality of
pizza question seems to be that there is no good pizza in West Philly!

[UC] MTV vs. Philly: who is the loser?

2004-03-17 Thread Sarah Scheckter

I don't think it's shameful NOT to go to church. Everyone prays in their
own way. Everyone has a different perception of what G-d is or isn't, does or
doesn't do, what he/she/it looks like, and what powers G-d has. So why is there
a need to go to a separate building and pray with other people who don't
recognize what you believe is true. Religion should be more personal than it is.
Granted, I am Jewish and the only time I step into a church is for Hetero
weddings and flea markets.

As my good friend Maggie Thatcher always says, "Never apologize, never explain." Anyhow, Davie, your big mistake was getting your lovely wife in the family way. That's how we reel 'em in. Also, I think we're arranging to have the Bishop pay a little visit to Tony and Annalisle and find out why their union has not yet resulted in issue. I know when I was a young married man it took a serious talk with Bishop Stoltzfus downstairs to get things moving, if you get my drift. Of course part of the problem was that I had not grown up on a farm.

Anyhow, this sort of religious disputation is best taken to the Culture list. To subscribe to CULTURE, go to WWW.PURPLE.COM/LIST.HTML  and follow the instructions.
