[UC] Elephants spotted on 45th Street

2004-05-05 Thread Krfapt

Well, actually they were white rather than spotted elephants. And they weren't trampling down the lovingly tended lawn gardens but were being hauled across the sidewalk from automobiles to the Spruce Hill Community Association Clubhouse and Cultural Center at 257 S 45th.

The bad news, though, is that Pauline Borkon, who's responsible for the White Elephant Sale at the Spruce Hill May Fair (it's this Saturday) says that while some have been arriving in Datsuns, they should be coming in droves. This, by way of saying that the contributions of kitsch to the collection of stuff to be sold at the fair have been relatively sparse this year.

After receiving a blood oath that none of the money from the sale would go to support the historic district nomination, I agreed to help by issuing this plea. If you have items around the house you no longer want or can use, or think are too tacky for your sophisticated tastes but will appeal to the hoi polloi in the neighborhood, please consider donating them. To do so, bring them to 257 S 45th between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm (someone can correct me if these hours aren't quite right) any day this week.

For additional information, including clarification of what they're looking for most diligently, call 215-349-7825 between the above hours.

[UC] Voter Registration Summer Internships

2004-05-05 Thread Fred Wolfe
I am passing information about this opportunity for students along to list,
in the case that any of you might know someone interested in this
internship program. If anyone knows of voter registration efforts being
made here in Philadelphia, I'm sure that they could find some help from
folks subscribed to this list.

I am writing you on behalf of the Faithful Citizenship Project, an
interfaith non-partisan voter registration drive sponsored by the National
Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice. Our goal is to do voter
registration in the religious community for the upcoming Nov. 2
election. We want to make sure that the voices of people of faith are
heard in this year's election.

We are offering internship programs for students through our Faithful
Citizenship Summer program. It is a 10 week paid internship program where
interns will work in one of our six sites (Chicago, Syracuse/Elmira NY,
Oklahoma City/Tulsa, Twin Cities, Portland OR, and Kansas City) to register
people of faith.

Please consider passing the attached flyer on to interested students,
especially those that will be living in those areas and are looking to put
their faith in the dignity for each person into action. Also, feel free to
check out our website by visiting http://www.nicwj.org/ and clicking on
Faithful Citizenship Project. There is more information on there about the
internship, the project, as well as a bulletin insert that we created about
voter registration from the ELCA tradition.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and also please let me know
if you have any suggestions for how to get the word out about this.

[UC] Street trees

2004-05-05 Thread Dan Myers
Dear Zardus,
If you were ever into any planting, you'll underdtand that Philadelphia WAS
stupid when it originally set up these "Street trees". Planting trees that
grow 80-100 feet in the air, under wires is just plain stupid. Also, the
planting of the ever-hardy-but-unknown-sex-tree of Gingko Biloba IS always
unwise. But now as, Fairmount Park tree afficanados, we can plant a tree
that only grows 20 or so feet under wires, and not have to be pruned by
PECO, which hires Asphundt (sp?).

Grass, in my opinion is the worst thing between the curb and sidewalk.
There's no "pretty value", it's hard to keep( you should mow it at least
once a month, and sometimes needs extra watering, fertilizer, etc), and it
proves to me the owner should be in a suburb, not here in the city. There
are plenty of groundcovers, like Mazus reptans for example, that have small
flowers twice a year can be tread upon like grass, and be so much easier to
take care of than turf. Or be even more creative...put down some moss, if
the ground is wet. Unless you are talking about ornanmental grass, which I
don't think you are, common grass should be left to suburbia.

My 4 cents. I'm Jewish so I count for the interest I've gained.

[UC] the "good guys" can do no wrong

2004-05-05 Thread Cozzzmik

good article on what's happening to Iraqi POW's at the hand of American and British soldiers...
~cozzzmik.

POV: the "good guys" can do no wrong===http://www.counterpunch.org/fisk05022004.htmlVictims of Our Own High-Flown MoralityThe "Good Guys" Who Can Do No Wrong By ROBERT FISKWhy are we surprised at their racism, their brutality, their sheer callousness towards Arabs? Those American soldiers in Saddam's old prison at Abu Ghraib, those young British squaddies in Basra came -- as soldiers often come -- from towns and cities where race hatred has a home: Tennessee and Lancashire. How many of "our" lads are ex--jailbirds themselves? How many support the British National Party? Muslims, Arabs, "cloth heads", "rag heads", "terrorists", "evil". You can see how the semantics break down.Add to that the poisonous, racial dribble of a hundred Hollywood movies that depict Arabs as dirty, lecherous, untrustworthy and violent people -- and soldiers are addicted to movies -- and it's not difficult to see how some British scumbag will urinate into the face of a hooded man, how some American sadist will stand a hooded Iraqi on a box with wires tied to his hands. The sexual sadism -- the bobby--sox girl soldier who points at a man's genitals, the mock orgy in Abu Ghraib prison, the British rifle in the prisoner's mouth -- might be a crazed attempt to balance all those lies about the Arab world, about the desert warrior's potency, the harem, polygamy.Even today, we still show the revolting Ashanti on our television stations, a feature film about the kidnapping of the wife of an English doctor by Arab slave--traders, which depicts Arabs as almost exclusively child--molesters, rapists, murderers, liars and thieves. It stars -- heaven spare us -- Michael Caine, Omar Sharif and Peter Ustinov and was made partly in Israel.Indeed, we now depict Arabs in our films as the Nazis once depicted Jews. But Arabs are fair game. Potential terrorists to a man -- and a woman -- they must be softened up, "prepared", humiliated, beaten, tortured. The Israelis use torture in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem. Now we torture in Saddam's old jail outside Baghdad and -- for this is where British soldiers beat a young Iraqi to death last summer -- in the former office of Saddam's most murderous chemical warfare fascist, the awful "Chemical" Ali.And the officers? Didn't the British lieutenants and captains and majors in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment know that their lads were kicking to death a young Iraqi hotel worker last summer? That man's fate -- and the documentary evidence proving that he was murdered -- was first revealed by The Independent on Sunday in January. Didn't the CIA boys at Abu Ghraib know that Ivan "Chip" Frederick and Lynddie England, two of the American soldiers in the photographs published last week, were obscenely humiliating their prisoners?Of course they did. The last time I saw Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, commander of the 800th Military Police Brigade in Iraq, she told me she had visited Camp X--Ray in Guantanamo and found nothing wrong with it. I should have guessed then that something had gone terribly wrong in Iraq.I remember how in Basra, on the eve of a visit by Tony Blair, I visited the British Army's press office in the city to ask about the death of 26--year--old Baha Mousa. The dead man's family had given me British documents proving that he had been beaten to death in custody, that the British Army had itself tried to pay off the family if they would give up any legal claim against the soldiers who so cruelly killed their son.I was met with yawns and a total inability to furnish information about the event. I was told to call the Ministry of Defence in London. The officer I spoke to appeared weary, even impatient about my inquiry. There was not a single word of compassion for the dead man.Back in September last year, General Karpinski was with a small group of journalists in Abu Ghraib -- the same ghastly prison in which thousands were put to death by Saddam, the same jail in which Frederick and England and their American buddies were standing their hooded Iraqi prisoner on a box with supposed electrodes on his hands -- and General Karpinski took some delight in escorting us to the old Saddam execution chamber. She led the way into the concrete room with its raised dais and gallows, and -- in front of us all -- triumphantly pulled the gallows lever so that the trap door clanged down. She urged us to read the last messages scrawled on the walls of the neighbouring death row by Iraqis awaiting Saddam's vengeance. But there was something wrong about her prison tour. There was no clear judicial process for the prisoners and there was no mention -- until I brought it up -- of the mortar attack on the American--held jail which killed six of the inmates in their tents in August, when General Karpinski was already in command of Iraq's 8,000 prisoners. They had been given "counselling"

I agree. Studies show that people in lower economic groups are more likely to letter. It correlates to education. Since most of the users of the park are in the lower socio-economic groups ... these are the people who litter.

Am I entitled? No ... I happen to pick up my trash and some of the trash of others. If I'm paying for services, I expect service. Since the service isn't happening, why should I pay?

improve the overall condition of the park, which we have for five straight years through the generosity of hundreds of people that live in University City as well as several foundations and corporations.  People contribute as little as $5 and as much as $20,000 each year because the Park is free and available to everyone.  Finally I can tell you that you are wrong about UCD.  There's not a person on my staff that doesn't care about the needs of individuals in the community.  The needs of individuals in this community are front and center for this organization and are the very reason we get up and come to work.  We are tremendously proud of what we do and what we have accomplished.

I hope you will support the fundraiser for the good it has done for the Park, if for no other reason.

I have to agree. If Kerry is for reinstating the draft for both men & women with no educational deferment and no conscientious objector status (as I have read but have not heard directly from Kerry), there needs to be a non-military option like volunteering in the school systems or hospitals or in the local and national parks. There's so much work that could be done by a strong volunteer work force that would really improve the quality of life for so many.  And volunteer work is so rewarding and humbling all at the same time.

Hey Frank,

Before you go bustin' a blood vessel, remember Zardus is not a real person. He's probably giggling at you right now because he got a rise from you.

I suspect that merchandise is scarce because the

Well, actually they were white
rather than spotted elephants. And they weren't trampling down the lovingly
tended lawn gardens but were being hauled across the sidewalk from automobiles
to the Spruce Hill Community Association Clubhouse and Cultural
Center at 257 S 45th.

The bad news, though, is that
Pauline Borkon, who's responsible for the White Elephant Sale at the Spruce
Hill May Fair (it's this Saturday) says that while some have been arriving in
Datsuns, they should be coming in droves. This, by way of saying that the
contributions of kitsch to the collection of stuff to be sold at the fair have
been relatively sparse this year.

After receiving a blood oath that
none of the money from the sale would go to support the historic district
nomination, I agreed to help by issuing this plea. If you have items
around the house you no longer want or can use, or think are too
tacky for your sophisticated tastes but will appeal to the hoi polloi in
the neighborhood, please consider donating them. To do so, bring them to 257 S
45th between 5:00 pm and 7:00
pm (someone can correct me if these hours aren't quite right) any
day this week.

For additional information,
including clarification of what they're looking for most diligently, call
215-349-7825 between the above hours.

Al, you should seriously consider putting your professional expertise to work and establish a futures market for porch sales in the hood. Then for example we could see what clawfoot bathtubs were going for, and do a little dealing before we even went out to the actual sale itself. Speaking of clawfoot bathtubs, I see in the latest BUCKS magazine that poor Gott(ie) wound up in some suburban rich folks' tastefully restored barn out in no mans land somewhere between here and the Big Apple. They painted his feet black, which was sort of a nice touch, although I'm not sure how historically accurate it was.

It's called a "google bomb" you can do it to. Get fifteen or twenty friends
to link a particular passage to a particular web page wait till the web
crawlers have found your pages and kapow. The real question is when is
google going to realize that any company with any initiative can do the same
thing and mcdonalds starts linking "healthy food" to their web
page...

What google _did_ remove were links to pages critical of L. Ron Hubbards
