[UC-Announce] Kalman Balogh & the Gypsy Cimbalom Band at Crossroads Thursday

2007-10-26 Thread Daniel Flaumenhaft

Thursday, November 1, 2007
KALMAN BALOGH
and the Gypsy Cimbalom Band

6:15 Lobby, cafe (now including dinner), and box office open
6:30 Lecture/demonstration "The Art of the Cimbalom: Origins and
Musical Styles"

7:30 Concert

Calvary Center for Culture and Community
48th Street and Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia

Kalman Balogh is one of the greatest living masters of the cimbalom,
a 36-stringed Central European hammered dulcimer that possesses piano-
like percussive abilities to drive a band rhythmically or take the
melodic lead or, in expert hands, to do both simultaneously. Balogh
is both the descendant of a famous family of Hungarian Gypsy
musicians and a graduate of the Franz Liszt University of Music in
Budapest and his virtuosity is matched only by his understanding of
and respect for his heritage. In the tradition of masters like
guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, he
dynamically merges music from the old and new worlds, connecting the
ancient folk music traditions of Central and Eastern Europe with the
chord progressions and swing of jazz. Melodies which have been
polished in European villages for centuries are interpreted with
great respect and understanding. The cimbalom becomes a new and
compelling voice centering a band that also includes acoustic b
ass, acoustic guitar, trumpet, and violins. Similarities in jazz and
traditional folk music, such as improvisation and a kaleidoscope of
emotional expressions, are immediately evident.

2007-10-26 Thread tim dunn
I think the Porch Sale location is 4625 Baltimore (not 4525). Correct me if
I'm wrong! I'm also having a Porch Sale on Saturday on the next block at 4717
Baltimore Ave (rain or shine). I'm raising money for one of our cat's vet.
bills, and also for Books through Bars. There will also be a cheap vegan
brunch happening at A-Space, 4722 Baltimore. That starts at 11am, hosted by
the Salt of the Earth
Collective. I hope that's not too much information! Tim Dunn

[UC] late cat

2007-10-26 Thread Jimmi Badger
If you're missing a handsome adult male cat, no collar, black with the barest
sprinkling of white hairs across his chest, and in good condition until
yesterday, my condolences. We found him on the sidewalk last night, still
warm, very relaxed-looking, and with no obvious cause of death. My housemates
moved him into the lot formerly known as 1124 South 48th Street, just in case
his heart decided to start beating again after all.

It didn't.

If you think he's yours and you want the body back, please claim it from the
lot as soon as possible. Don't email first; I won't check this account again
until Monday. We'll be burying the remains tonight or tomorrow.

Mischief Night and Halloween are coming up fast. Please watch your pets.

[UC] Malicious PDF files being spammed out in volume

2007-10-26 Thread craigsolve
Thought some of you might find this security alert helpful.

Ciao.

Craig

This press release comes from F-Secure.

PRESS RELEASE

For release October 26, 2007

Malicious PDF files being spammed out in volume

F-Secure has been monitoring a large mailing of malicious PDF files.
These PDF files exploit a recent vulnerability. When such PDF files are
viewed on vulnerable machines, they get infected.

An unknown party has been sending out tens of thousands of mails with
Subject-lines like:

? Your credit report
? Personal Financial Statement
? Your Credit File
? Balance Report

The mails contain no mail body, only an attachment called "report.pdf". When
opened, the PDF file uses the CVE-2007-5020 vulnerability via Acrobat Reader
and IE7 and downloads further malware from a server in Malaysia. The target
of the malware seems to be to create a botnet of infected machines to be used
for further malicious activity.

"We're worried about this case, as PDF attachments are typically not filtered
at email gateways", says F-Secure's Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypponen.
"Executable files are now stripped almost everywhere, but PDF is stripped
almost nowhere".

"Also, a security update for Acrobat Reader was just made available few days
ago, so there are tons of users who haven't had a chance to update yet".

F-Secure Anti-Virus detects the report.pdf malware as
Exploit:W32/AdobeReader.K.

[UC] Architectural Committee

2007-10-26 Thread Frank
I was speaking with a New Urbanist friend on Wednesday before she
attended a ZBA hearing about a proposed wall of condos on Venice
Island. She said recommendations by the Architectural Committee are
often ignored. We should keep our eyes and ears open regarding
further hearings, since it's obvious that Penn won't be announcing them.

Also, I was gratified to see a bad review of the Symphony House
monstrosity in today's Inky.

Re: [UC] Breaking news about the Friends of 40th Street Meeting

2007-10-26 Thread Glenn
Hey Andrew,

Did any of them mention if they planned to announce
another "open and public forum?"

I wonder why they schedule wierd little presentations
at 8AM when most residents can't even come.

In the spirit of the famous Penn policy of community
engagement, why don't they schedule a well publisized
third, "open and public forum?" This type of issue is
of interest to the whole community and it should be
announced publicly in the local newspaper at least 10
days in advance.

I thought your report about the Architectural
committee was very good. Please keep up the good
work.

Glenn

Well Al, hope is a good thing. But from my
experience, once Penn Real Estate knows that there
will be significant community opposition to their
"towering" over West Philadelphia; they take a
different path.

Ususally, a delay lets their plans go off the
community's radar. They look for other paths to worm
through and also intensify the efforts for complete
secrecy. How long has it been since we've heard about
BID, yet Lussenhop and Mel are still listed on a BID
steering committee? And the community has still not
gotten an answer to the specific question about how
they got on this committee.

And I wonder when UCD is going to release the results
of the internal investigation about their violation of
federal law? Of course, I'm joking about that!

So I'm going to join you and be hopeful while keeping
my eyes and ears open.

Glenn
