[UC] Go see Rent at the Rotunda. It's everything good about West Philly.
Hi all-- I don't remember seeing anything on these lists about the extraordinary performances of Rent at the Rotunda. It's directed by West Philly's own Rich Wexler and features a cast of superbly talented Philadelphia high school students. Their voices are amazing. The ticket price ($10 but feel free to give more if you can) is affordable. The anthemic songs are catchy and moving even for jaded West Philly folk. Plus, you can buy snacks from West Philly's Black Cat Baking at intermission. Here are the remaining shows: Sat, 12/17 1pm Sun, 12/18 1pm 7pm Thu, 12/22, 7pm Fri, 12/23 3pm Here's the fb page with more information: https://www.facebook.com/groups/projecttheaterrent/ And here's a way you can buy tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/207963 I don't say this lightly, but if you don't go see this, you're freakin' crazy. best, Michael.

[UC] roofer recommendations?
Hi all-- I'm posting this for a friend who is not on this listserv. If you have any recommendations, can you email him directly at mmarze...@gmail.com? thanks, Michael. ^ I have a roof leak and I cannot find a reasonable person to repair it. I guess my story is typical for west philly- first I got a friend of a friend agree to see it, it took him more than a week to come and see it, then he promised to do it for $400 with a friend but only in 3 weeks since they don’t work on weekends, go for vacation ect. I agreed and he never showed up nor return my messages. Then, bravely, I used Angie’s list, chose the best/cheapest company, waited two weeks for them to come, another week for estimate: $4375. I think it is too much since the whole new roof is around $15-18K. So, now it is 3 months, leak going on and I can already see winter coming. Can anyone of you give me a contact info of a reasonable person that would do a normal job for a normal pay in an acceptable timeframe? Michal mmarze...@gmail.com

[UC] The Tool Library is moving ( how you can help)
-- Forwarded message -- From: West Philly Tool Library i...@westphillytools.org Date: Sat, May 14, 2011 at 10:44 PM Subject: We're moving ( how you can help) [image: West Philly Tool Library Logo] We're moving! We're very excited to report that in June, the Tool Library will be moving around the corner into a warehouse at 1314 South 47th Street. The new space, just 200-300 feet away, will have almost triple the amount of space we have in the current location. This will allow us to stock more tools and hold more on-site classes. But we can't do it alone. We need your help. Here are *four easy ways you can help us with the move:* 1. What are you doing on Sat, May 21, and Sun, May 22? We'll be moving everything around the block during that weekend and could really use your help. *Have an hour or two to spare? * Please email Jake at j...@westphillytools.org. 2. The new space will allow us to stock a lot more tools. Do you have any power tools, ladders, or other tools in your basement that you haven't used for years? *Donate your unused tools to the Tool Library by clicking **herehttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=34qid=5007 **. * As a non-profit organization, all donations to the Tool Library are tax exempt to the extent permitted under law. 3. The new space will also allow us to offer classes on site. We're looking forward to holding classes on how to pour a concrete sidewalk, how to re-glaze a window pane, how to re-wire an electrical outlet, and many more. *Do you have a skill that you'd like to teach others?* Please email Stacey at sta...@westphillytools.org. 4. The new space will necessarily cost more money than our current storefront. We run the Tool Library on a shoe string budget, but annual memberships and late fees account for only about 40% of our total budget. *If you like the idea of having a tool library in your neighborhood, consider making a tax-deductable donation, by clicking **herehttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=32qid=5007 **.* We're very excited about this new phase for the Tool Library. Stay tuned for an announcement about an upcoming Open House so we can show off our new space. And, as always, thanks for your support. *Michael, Morgan, Ben, Stacey, Robert, James, Stacey, Kathleen, and Eugene The Tool Library Steering Committee Tool Librarians* PS. Have you built something awesome with tools borrowed from the Tool Library? [UC] community compost bin
Hi neighbors-- I have a small backyard on 48th Street with a large (18 cubic feet) compost bin http://westphillytools.org/node/5364. Last year, a few friends asked me whether they could use my compost bin and I said sure. Soon, word spread and within a month, there were 20-30 families using the compost bin. There was a steady stream of folks bringing their compost to my backyard. This was great. But it also overwhelmed my bin and, after a time, I had to put a stop to it. Recently, several people have started asking me whether they can use my bin again. It occurs to me that there is an incredible need for community composting. And, until we get curbside composting like San Francisco, this seems like something we might have to can take on ourselves. So my question: (1) are there any community composting sites in our neighborhood that I can refer folks to? (2) if not, does anyone own or have access to a space in the neighborhood big enough that we might build a bin? If someone offers the space, I'll take care of constructing the bin laying out the policies rules, etc. thanks, Michael.

To celebrate, we'll be holding a* tool yard sale.* That's right, over the past two years, we've been lucky enough to receive hundreds of tool donations from members and other community members. And while we're grateful to everyone for their support, it turns out that we only need so many hammers, screwdrivers, or saws. To say nothing of the pounds and pounds of nails, screws, tiles, switch plates, and assorted items that we can't use (or can't figure out what they are.) Plus, we'll also be selling several shop tools that have been donated to us that are too heavy to effectively loan out, including two drill presses, a large table saw, a band saw, bench grinder, and a stationery sander. Of course, we'll also be accepting power tool donations. And did we mention we'll have coffee and snacks? Students will explore themes and text through the lens of the actor, with an emphasis on understanding and communicating Shakespeare's language. Working with scenes from The Comedy of Errors, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, this workshop is sure to help students with their exploration of Shakespearean language in their school curriculum. *Instructor Bios* Jess Conda received her BFA in Acting from Arcadia University in 2003 and has taught theatre at People's Light and Theatre Company, Collingdale Community School, Delaware Valley Friends School, and the Montgomery Theater. From 2002-2005, Jess was on staff at Arcadia University's Camp Shakespeare, where she directed seven one-hour Shakespearean productions with elementary, junior high and high school students. Jess played Phebe in last season's production of As You Like It and will perform in this year's production of The Comedy of Errors. Justin Jain received his BFA in Acting from the University of the Arts in 2003 and has taught at Philadelphia Young Playwrights, the Arden Theatre Company, People's Light and Theatre Company, and Freedom Theatre. He is currently teaches acting for the Continuing Education branch of UArts. A few people suggested using a Saws-All. I don¹t have one, and the car is not near my house so I couldn¹t use an electric outlet. Might a Saws-All be battery driven? I heard about a recently opened local tool library, but don¹t remember the details. Can anyone give me contact info for it? Thanks, Margie __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [UC] West Philly Tool Lending Library mtg, Weds, 5/16, 6:30p
Hi all, Two months ago, I sent the email below about the possibility of starting a tool lending library here in West Philly. Since then, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC) has offered to help with the nonprofit status. And we have received an extraordinarily generous offer to use a store-front property in the 4600 block of Woodland Ave for one year. We're now ready to have our first community meeting to form a steering committee and move forward. Please come to our first organizing meeting on Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30pm in the basement of the Calvary Center for Culture and Community, 48th Baltimore Ave. For more information, please contact me at 215-779-4166 or email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] thanks, Michael. Note: forwarded message attached. - Ahhh...imagining that irresistible new car smell? Check outnew cars at Yahoo! Autos.---BeginMessage--- Hi all, In Summer 2005, I moved back to West Philly after living on the West Coast for six years. For the few years that I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I belonged to a non-profit tool lending library in Oakland. I would love to open one in West Philly. I've talked this over with a number of friends and have gotten generally positive support. If anyone on the list is interested in helping with this project, could you please email me off-line? My initial thoughts would be that a library would be housed in a church basement or other space. Community members would pay $20-$40 in annual dues (plus a deposit that would mitigate against loss.) It would be stocked with tools--like yard tools (weed whackers, shovels), hand tools (hammers, levels), power tools (circ saws, drills), extension cords, ladders, drop clothes, maybe even craft tools (silk screening tools, pottery tools). It would target home owners who want to do home repair but do not own their own tools or industrious tenants (like myself.) It would be open on Saturday and one or two evenings during the week. Folks could borrow up to three tools that would be returned the following Saturday. We would need money and tool donations to get it off the ground and then, depending on the cost of space, etc, we'd have pretty low operating costs after that. Maybe a grant or two a year would fill the gap between dues and operating costs. Other tool lending libraries in the country have received help from Home Depot or grants from municipal governments to get things started. I'm especially interested in talking with anyone who might know of a potential location that would house the tool lending library. Thank you very much, Michael Froehlich (cell) 215-779-4166 - It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Yahoo! Toolbar.---End Message---
