*We will also feature a conversation with the two candidates for our state
representative, James Roebuck and Algernong Allen.* The conversation will
be moderated by Cedar Park resident Bill Hangley Jr., a freelance
journalist who has contributed to The Philadelphia Public School Notebook

If you’ve never been to a CPN meeting, the annual meeting is a great
introduction to the organization and the work that it does.

An informal meet and greet will follow the meeting.

2012-05-31 Thread Michael Froehlich
Hi neighbors--
Remember that $25,000 grant that many of you helped the Tool Library win
this month by voting for us on Facebook? One of the first things we're

Tool Library seeks tool mechanic to repair and maintain tools

The West Philly Tool Library is a nonprofit community-based tool lending
library that loans tools to our individual and organizational members. Our
tools have helped members rehab houses, patch roofs, clean up abandoned
cemeteries, fix cars, build banjos, and much, much more.

We have tools for home repairs and improvements, gardening and outdoor
maintenance, and bike and auto repairs. We currently have more than 1100
members and more than 3200 tools. Members pay an annual membership fee
between $20 – $50 based on income.

Since last year, we have doubled the number of tools we loan per month. We
now seek a part-time tool mechanic to maintain and repair tools.

*Job Duties*

the job would include helping to determine what tools are safe to use and
when it is cost effective to repair. With electric tools, this could
include tasks such as replacing brushes on rotors, replacing switches, or
repairing cords. With gas tools, this could include tasks such as keeping
the tools gassed up with appropriate fuel mixtures, replacing spark plugs
and filters, and preparing for off-season storage. With manual tools, the
position could include tasks such as sharpening and securing handles.
   - Working with Tool Tenders committee to determine appropriate tool
   purchases and repair policies.
   - Working with and, when necessary, training volunteers.
   - Maintaining repair area in good order.
   - Ordering and keeping cost records on replacement parts.
   - Keeping records on tool repairs status/completions.
   - Writing user reminders for frequently broken tools
   - As time permits, assisting Tool Librarians with membership
applications, tool check in/out, shelving tools, straightening shelves, and
   cleanup.
   - Attend regularly scheduled meetings of the Steering Committee
   - Other tasks as assigned.

*Skills required*

   - Small tool repair experience.
   - Basic computer skills.
   - Enjoy working with members and steering committee.

*Compensation*

   - $15 per hour.
   - 10 hours per week to start (may change depending on available work.)
   - Schedule negotiable but needs to be regular and consistent.

*How to Apply*

Please email a cover letter and resume to the attention of Michael
Froehlich at mich...@westphillytools.org. If you have never been to the
Tool Library, we encourage you to visit us before submitting your
application. Our location and hours of operation are available on our

2011-12-15 Thread Michael Froehlich
Hi all--

I don't remember seeing anything on these lists about the extraordinary
performances of Rent at the Rotunda. It's directed by West Philly's own

school students. Their voices are amazing. The ticket price ($10 but feel
free to give more if you can) is affordable. The anthemic songs are catchy
and moving even for jaded West Philly folk. Plus, you can buy snacks from
West Philly's Black Cat Baking at intermission.

Here are the remaining shows:
Sat, 12/17 1pm
Sun, 12/18 1pm 7pm
Thu, 12/22, 7pm

[UC] roofer recommendations?

2011-07-28 Thread Michael Froehlich
Hi all--
I'm posting this for a friend who is not on this listserv. If you have any
recommendations, can you email him directly at mmarze...@gmail.com?
thanks,
Michael.

^

I have a roof leak and I cannot find a reasonable person to repair it.

I guess my story is typical for west philly- first I got a friend of a
friend agree to see it, it took him more than a week to come and see it,
then he promised to do it for $400 with a friend but only in 3 weeks since
they don’t work on weekends, go for vacation ect. I agreed and he never
showed up nor return my messages. Then, bravely, I used Angie’s list, chose
the best/cheapest company, waited two weeks for them to come, another week
for estimate: $4375. I think it is too much since the whole new roof is
around $15-18K. So, now it is 3 months, leak going on and I can already see
winter coming.

Can anyone of you give me a contact info of a reasonable person that would
do a normal job for a normal pay in an acceptable timeframe?

[image: West Philly Tool Library Logo]

We're moving!

We're very excited to report that in June, the Tool Library will be moving
around the corner into a warehouse at 1314 South 47th Street.

The new space, just 200-300 feet away, will have almost triple the amount of
space we have in the current location. This will allow us to stock more
tools and hold more on-site classes.

But we can't do it alone. We need your help.

Here are *four easy ways you can help us with the move:*

1. What are you doing on Sat, May 21, and Sun, May 22? We'll be moving
everything around the block during that weekend and could really use your
help. *Have an hour or two to spare? * Please email Jake at
j...@westphillytools.org.

2. The new space will allow us to stock a lot more tools. Do you have any
power tools, ladders, or other tools in your basement that you haven't used
for years? *Donate your unused tools to the Tool Library by clicking
**herehttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=34qid=5007
**. * As a non-profit organization, all donations to the Tool Library are
tax exempt to the extent permitted under law.

3. The new space will also allow us to offer classes on site. We're
looking forward to holding classes on how to pour a concrete sidewalk, how
to re-glaze a window pane, how to re-wire an electrical outlet, and many
more. *Do you have a skill that you'd like to teach others?* Please email
Stacey at sta...@westphillytools.org.

4. The new space will necessarily cost more money than our current
storefront. We run the Tool Library on a shoe string budget, but annual
memberships and late fees account for only about 40% of our total budget. *If
you like the idea of having a tool library in your neighborhood, consider
making a tax-deductable donation, by clicking
**herehttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=32qid=5007
**.*

We're very excited about this new phase for the Tool Library. Stay tuned
for an announcement about an upcoming Open House so we can show off our new
space. And, as always, thanks for your support.

[UC] community compost bin

2011-04-27 Thread Michael Froehlich
Hi neighbors--

I have a small backyard on 48th Street with a large (18 cubic feet) compost
bin http://westphillytools.org/node/5364. Last year, a few friends asked
me whether they could use my compost bin and I said sure. Soon, word spread
and within a month, there were 20-30 families using the compost bin. There
was a steady stream of folks bringing their compost to my backyard. This
was great. But it also overwhelmed my bin and, after a time, I had to put a
stop to it.

Recently, several people have started asking me whether they can use my bin
again. It occurs to me that there is an incredible need for community
composting. And, until we get curbside composting like San Francisco, this
seems like something we might have to can take on ourselves.

So my question: (1) are there any community composting sites in our
neighborhood that I can refer folks to? (2) if not, does anyone own or have
access to a space in the neighborhood big enough that we might build a bin?
If someone offers the space, I'll take care of constructing the bin
laying out the policies rules, etc.

thanks,
Michael.

Join us at the Tool Library* this* Saturday, March 12, from 9am to 3pm as we
celebrate our Third Anniversary with our *annual yard sale jamboree.*

Each year, the Tool Library receives hundreds of donations of tools,
hardware, and, frankly, lots of things we don't really know what to do with.
Many of them we can put into circulation. But lots of them we can't. This
Saturday, March 12, we'll be emptying our basement and selling them off.

Hammers for a buck! Tool boxes for two bucks! Buckets of nails for a song!
 And so much more.

We'll also have free coffee and pastries from our friends and neighbors at Four
Worlds
Bakeryhttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=20qid=3357.
And around noon, we'll welcome a special visit from The Build-it
Bushttp://westphillytools.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=21qid=3357
!

So come down and visit. We'd love to see you.

*If you have any power tools that you'd like to donate to the Tool Library,
we'll gladly accept them. As a 501(c)(3), all donations are tax
deductible. *

*Can't make the party but want to support the Tool Library? Click the

only need so many hammers, screwdrivers, or saws. To say nothing of the
pounds and pounds of nails, screws, tiles, switch plates, and assorted items
that we can't use (or can't figure out what they are.)

Plus, we'll also be selling several shop tools that have been donated to us
that are too heavy to effectively loan out, including two drill presses, a
large table saw, a band saw, bench grinder, and a stationery sander.

Of course, we'll also be accepting power tool donations. And did we mention
we'll have coffee and snacks?

On behalf of everyone at the Tool Library, thanks for your continuing
support.

performance. Information below and available at

Chase away those midsummer school's-out doldrums with the Bard! Led by
Shakespeare in Clark Park (SCP) Education Coordinators Jess Conda and Justin
Jain, SCP workshops engage kids in the world of Shakespeare and the creation
of theatre --- a perfect complement to a family trip to the park to see this
year's production of The Comedy of Errors.

Workshop fee: $30
Workshops are held at the Parent Infant Center, located at 4205 Spruce
Street, with the main entrance at 43rd and Locust.

Space is limited! Please contact educat...@shakespeareinclarkpark.org by

*Sunday, August 2, 1:00pm-4:00pm*
In this unique family experience, students and parents explore storytelling
and creative play with their bodies, voices and imaginations. Using music,

performance energy and theatricality, while celebrating the art of
collaboration. (Note: $30 fee is per student. One parent or guardian per

language: what it means, how it relates to our lives today, and how to make
the language come to life onstage. Themes from The Comedy of Errors will be
explored as students create their own original scenes, culminating in a
short showing at the end of the workshop.

When two sets of separated-at-birth identical twin brothers end up in almost
exactly the same place at almost exactly the same time, confusion is bound
to break out. Add to the muddle an angry wife, a beautiful sister-in-law, a
greedy courtesan, and a priest known for his excellent exorcism skills ---
and the result is Shakespeare's snappiest comedy.

We look forward to seeing you in the park this summer!

I need to borrow a squirrel-size humane trap asap. Trying to rescue a stray
kitten. Yes, I already have a larger trap, which we've tried using, with
no success.

I can pick up any time. Sooner is better.

Thx,

Thanks for all the advice about removing the steering wheel lock. A few
people suggested using a Saws-All. I don¹t have one, and the car is not near
my house so I couldn¹t use an electric outlet. Might a Saws-All be battery
driven?

I heard about a recently opened local tool library, but don¹t remember the
details. Can anyone give me contact info for it?

[UC] West Philly Tool Lending Library mtg, Weds, 5/16, 6:30p

2007-05-03 Thread Michael Froehlich
Hi all,

Two months ago, I sent the email below about the possibility of starting a tool
lending library here in West Philly. Since then, the Greater Philadelphia
Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC) has offered to help with the nonprofit status.
And we have received an extraordinarily generous offer to use a store-front
property in the 4600 block of Woodland Ave for one year.

We're now ready to have our first community meeting to form a steering
committee and move forward.

Please come to our first organizing meeting on Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30pm in
the basement of the Calvary Center for Culture and Community, 48th Baltimore
Ave.

For more information, please contact me at 215-779-4166 or email me at [EMAIL

thanks,
Michael.

Hi all,

In Summer 2005, I moved back to West Philly after living on the West Coast for
six years. For the few years that I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I
belonged to a non-profit tool lending library in Oakland. I would love to open
one in West Philly. I've talked this over with a number of friends and have
gotten generally positive support. If anyone on the list is interested in
helping with this project, could you please email me off-line?

My initial thoughts would be that a library would be housed in a church
basement or other space. Community members would pay $20-$40 in annual dues
(plus a deposit that would mitigate against loss.) It would be stocked with
tools--like yard tools (weed whackers, shovels), hand tools (hammers, levels),
power tools (circ saws, drills), extension cords, ladders, drop clothes, maybe
even craft tools (silk screening tools, pottery tools).

It would target home owners who want to do home repair but do not own their own
tools or industrious tenants (like myself.)

It would be open on Saturday and one or two evenings during the week. Folks
could borrow up to three tools that would be returned the following Saturday.

We would need money and tool donations to get it off the ground and then,
depending on the cost of space, etc, we'd have pretty low operating costs after
that. Maybe a grant or two a year would fill the gap between dues and
operating costs. Other tool lending libraries in the country have received
help from Home Depot or grants from municipal governments to get things started.

I'm especially interested in talking with anyone who might know of a potential
location that would house the tool lending library.

Thank you very much,
