[UC] Clark Park Youth Soccer

2007-05-19 Thread Vivianne T. Nachmias
Today, the last day, was beautiful weather and the Bowl was full of
children, soccer balls, parents, friends, coaches, and up on the hill
Melanie and coworkers laid out a not only delicious but healthy set
of lunch sandwiches and fresh fruit and drinks from Abbraccio... AND
of course, Trophies! Very shiny this year and with name plaques
that looked quite professional.
The kids from red, blue or yellow teams played each other, and grown
ups and sometimes older brothers or sisters joined in. Seeing the
happy kids, not only those that could say did you see my goal!! but
those that just had fun scuffling, kicking, getting that ball, made
one realize what a treasure not only the Park is, but the people who
organize and run Youth Soccer.
Hats off to you! It's a very special experience... volunteer
coaches! Parents who come to watch! Not much like it around
here. ...

Hi,

POP has been invited to plant fruit trees in a large city-block lot
in the largely Latino district
(32% vacant lots) on Saturday, May 19, from 10-3. FREE FOOD will
be available all day, thanks to
Hunting Park Assn. Neighbors are gathering to clean the lot at
4300 Lawrence Street of trash
(one block east of 5th St, at Bristol). http://www.temple.edu/MURL/
group01.htm Can anyone get a
fruit tree and/or berry bush from Greensgrow? You'll be
reimbursed. Map:

There's a 21-acre vacant lot at the intersection of N. 9th St and
Roosevelt Boulevard, a few
blocks NW of the above. Some years ago, 996 houses were demolished
because Wingohocking Creek
below them was undermining foundations. There's a proposal for a
shopping mall on part of this

unstable land, but there's room for more constructive use.

You may have seen City Paper's story about POP. Well-written, but
with a gargoyle photo of me.

That's a risk with publicity.

organizations to contact, land to plant

are all welcome.

Vivianne,

Winnie Harris has called to say that the Fairmount Park guys hope
to START tree delivery at the central point of Malcolm X Park
tomorrow at 10:30. Timing depends on how quickly loading goes at
the holding yard in Fairmount Park. There is no way to tell when
they will be dropping the 3 trees at Lea but a good guess would be
late morning or early afternoon. Shall we say that tree planting
will start at 2:00 and ask the kids to stay later than 3:10 as
required to finish up? Just say a prayer that the trees are not
too big. We'll be OK.

I will load all the tools tonight. Joe Shapiro will be bringing the
water hookup and some more shovels (right Joe!). John will come
when he can (right, John, just bring your bike!). You mentioned
Jack coming. How is his sense of humour if we knock him into a
hole by accident?

responsibility of the property owner. The property owner, agent or
tenant, as the owner may determine, is responsible for removing snow
from the sidewalk at the end of a snowstorm. The regulations require
that there should be a path cleared of not less than 30 inches in
width, on the sidewalk, abutting the property. As a courtesy to your
neighbors and other pedestrians, provide as wide a path as possible,
and cut out handicap ramps and inlets.
If others have dangerous and unshoveled sidewalks, call the Department
of License and Inspections Services and Operations Unit, (215)
686-3140 or use the LI Online Service and Complaint System.

Plowing and Salting

Call the Streets Department's Customer Affairs Unit at 215-686-5560,
or dial (star) *FIX on your cellular phone (a free cellular call) to
request that your street be plowed or salted following a snow or ice
storm. The representative will route your request to the appropriate
Highway district for service.

Our friends at UC Green ask that you minimize the use of salt whenever
possible as it damages urban trees and the water table.

the City and how to improve the program.

No child deserves coal-fired power in their stocking.

For generations, children have been threatened with coal in their
stocking for being naughty — but coal-fired power is a punishment
that can last 40 years or more. Coal power is the greatest source
of global warming pollution and brain-damaging mercury emissions.

Don't let Congress use coal to solve our energy crisis!

Hello Vivianne,

For generations, children have been threatened with coal in their
stocking for being naughty — but giving kids coal-fired power
plants is a punishment that can last 40 years or more. Tell
Congress NO to more coal-fired power plants!

Today, coal provides about half of our nation's electricity — at
great cost to our health, land, water, and climate. Coal power is
currently America's single biggest source of global warming
pollution and brain-damaging mercury emissions. In addition, coal
mining pollutes our drinking water and is an extremely dangerous
occupation.

Stand up for your health and the health of our earth. Tell Congress
to promote clean energy, not coal power!

Utilities across the country are pushing to build more than 150 new
coal-fired power plants. Most of these plants would use old
pulverized coal technology that is designed to last at least
40-50 years. But it's not too late to tell Congress our kids
deserve better than coal.

This holiday season, ask your members of Congress to start the new
year fresh by promoting energy efficiency and clean, renewable
sources of electricity like wind and solar. Sign the petition:

there are plenty of books and supplies and support systems.
And... the school garden is often used for the children to go to...

Re: [UC] Inquirer UnivCity Front Article

2003-02-24 Thread Vivianne T Nachmias
I looked at the article and one reason the housing prices it quotes have
gone up so much is that it defines Univ. City as going to 45th Street...
this is within the Alexander school boundaires, which we know has had a
major effect on house price, as expected. Actually, U. City goes to 50th
St., or, more recently byone definition, to 52nd St. I think you would
see a major difference... there are many really nice houses, but smaller,
perhaps between where I live on 47th St (which has been U. city since it
started, and we have lived here for 41 years) and 50th or 52nd St.
So I think the article, while it makes a point about grad students and
professionals, etc. moving in, is faulty.
I do not know if apartment prices have gone up west of 45th, but I do
know that a neigbor, who lives in and apt, run by Trammel Crow, last
year, was strong armed to increase his rent until he pointed out his
lease and threatened to call a lawyer. So there may be some illegal
power playing going on in apartments.

Btu they should get their facts straight!

Re: [UC] Recycling -- the fickle finger of fate

2002-06-21 Thread vivianne t. nachmias

here's another idea, how about a prize for the three blocks that recycle
the most... however I see that that also is impractical, since you'd have
to weight them or see the bulk and it could go to a fraternity that has a
huge beer party...
oh well, it is as most things, try persuasion...

At 10:37 PM -0400 6/20/2002, Jon P. Mourar wrote:
In my message yesterday, I suggested it would be better that the Streets
Dept. fine both those who don't recycle at all, and those who mix their
recyclables in with their trash, rather than pick on poor folks like Roger
Harman, who are recycling, but putting newspapers in plastic bags to keep
them from getting wet.
I realized soon after I sent the thing that there was an obvious problem
with my statement, and I expected some comments! Sure enough, today I heard
from Steph99, the first person who asked about not recycling at all. When
you think about it, it's obvious that that particular aspect is almost
impossible to enforce! I don't see how they could possibly require each
household to put some recyclable(s) in the blue bucket every 2 weeks. What
if you have no recyclables accumulated (hard to believe, but possible)?
Maybe you would have to put out the empty bucket to show there is none? But
what if you are away on vacation, and have no trash at all? I'm sure the
trash guys are not checking off addresses as they pick stuff up anyway. That
would be an enforcement nightmare.
I would have to guess, that as long as you don't mix recycling stuff with
trash, that they couldn't possibly fine you. In fact, I'll be pretty
surprised if they actually fine people who mix it with their trash (although
I would love to see it happen!). Are they going to start examining what's in
trash bags? How much will they have to pay union laborers to do that? It may
be worth it, though, as 100% recycling compliance (or anything approaching
it) would greatly reduce the city's costs for disposing of waste.
I expect if it happens, there will be occasional random checking by
special workers, probably the SWEEP officers (Streets Dept. Enforcement ).
Why don't we all just recycle like we're supposed to, and save the extra
money necessary for enforcement for other needed services? (I know, hopeless
utopian thinking).

There are many weeks that I don't create enough trash or recyclables to
bother
taking it out. Is it possible to be penalized for not putting out a
container
if you have nothing to put out?

ps, I compost in my kitchen which really helps keep trash levels down.
Besides
the occasional battle with fruitflies, it's pretty neat and great for the
garden. Anyone wanting a starting point for home/apt composting write
 privately.

Dear Friends,

Short notice, I know, but everything has only just fallen into place for this, so
we're going to try and give it a shot:

We need to move around 80 bikes on Saturday, from NBW to

Wynwood (mid to late morning)
Fishtown (afternoon, preferrably after 1:30)
The scrap yard (either southwest Philly or East Lansdowne)(any time of day, afternoon
is best)

We have plenty of people for loading and unloading, but what we do need is people with
trucks, vans or any of the above with a trailer hitch (There is a trailer available
for the morning run)

Please e-mail me back ASAP if you can help.

Many thanks

[UC] Saturday Reading Club at Lea... starting Jan 12 this Saturday! call for mentors!

2002-01-10 Thread Vivianne T Nachmias

Very exciting development. After many years of struggle, Lea K-8 school
now has an experienced and dynamic principal, Mr. Mike Silverman who is
instituting several new programs. One of the two main foci is Literacy.
We gave books to the first graders and read with them, and see that the
range of skill is wide, some children read well, others barely.
NOW! With the help of a grant and outreach from Center for
Community Partnerships at Penn, there is to be Saturday Reading Club at
Lea, probably in the new beautiful library and adjoining rooms from
9-12 hoping to try to catch those children who need extra help.
YOU can make a difference to future community well being! Come
and metnor a child, give an hour a Saturday (or more if you can) and let
NO CHILD FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS..
Hopefully, we will also make contact with parents, give the
children books to take home when we see their interests, and generally
push the joy of literacy and the different worlds that are in books, thus
helping the children do better in school, and helping the community have
more happy, achieving children
You can email me for thoughts, or questions, or just COME TO LEA,
FRONT DOOR ON LOCUST AT 47TH, AND COME TO THE OFFICE ON SATURDAY, JAN 12,
ABOUT 9... WE WILL GET TRAINING, SIGN UP CHILDREN, PROB. NOT ACTUALLY
READ TILL THE FOLLOWING WEEK...
IF YOU HAVE BOOKS SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN AND COULD DONATE! PLEASE
BRING THEM, ALSO... OR JUST LEAVE THEM ON THE PATIO AT:
