[UC] Absentee ballots

2004-10-29 Thread Marianne Das

As a voter who was both over 65 and temporarily
disabled, I had to vote by absentee ballot last fall. Now fully ambulatory, I
was stunned by the solicitude of the Democratic party and the City Commissioners
in their efforts to enable me to vote this time around.

I had a phone call (canned, of course) from Ed
Rendell telling me to expect an application for a provisional ballot. This is a
kind of absentee ballot for those who vote at an inaccessible pooling place and
are 65 and/or disabled. The ballot duly arrived, and I was instructed to
fill it out and send it in.Since I'm no longer disabled and plan to work
at a polling place on election day, I ignored the message. A telephone reminder
followed. The other day the City Commissioners sent a postcard where not only
the polling place was listed, but also the reason for its inaccessibility
("Passenger Loading Zone").

Wonders will never cease!

Title: Re: [UC] Absentee Ballots?

My cousin, who is disabled and over 65 applied for her absentee ballot very late (thinking that she already had the ballot). She received the ballot the day before the deadline, and got it out in time.

Margie P.

Has anyone else applied for an absentee ballot? If so, have you received it yet?

A co-worker filed for one close to a month ago (well with in the time frame) and has yet to receive her ballot which is due back tomorrow. I have heard this story from a number of other people - all registered democrats in Philadelphia. My co-workers phone calls have resulted in a lot of run-around. One person at the office handling the absentee ballots did tell her that her ballot was sent out Wednesday a week ago and must have been lost in the mail. But would not send out another. The other missing absentee ballots are unexplained.

Before we get to far into the conspiracy theory, I wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing any difficulty in getting their absentee ballots? Or has anyone applied for an absentee ballot and received it with no problems?

Thanks!

RE: [UC] Absentee Ballots? - mail delivery problems?

2004-10-28 Thread Turner,Kathleen
Just to add another possibility to the list of reasons that absentee
ballots may not have arrived --

Our block has a chronic problem of mail delivered to the wrong
addresses; usually just the wrong house number within the block but
sometimes the wrong block (44xx Pine instead of 43xx Pine) or the right
house number but the wrong street name!

My husband caught up with the mail carrier one day earlier this week
when the mail she left at our house was all for another address -- her
response was a shrug and a smirk. We later knocked on neighbors' doors
and returned the mail left at our house to the correct address, but were
unable to find any of the mail that should have come to our address.
Needless to say, we made a complaint to the post office but only go a
we'll look into it response.

So one more good reason to get to know your neighbors . . .

If the absentee ballots are due tomorrow and the office responsible is
being ir-responsible, you all might consider reporting this to one of
the many organizations that were created to handle just this sort of
problem:

  1-800-PA-VOTE9 (728-6839)
  1-866-MyVote1
  1-866-our-vote (for serious problems)
Also http://www.moveonpac.org supposedly has a problem for online but I
couldn't find it.

Good luck,

For a few weeks we had our mailman dropping the mail in our unlocked vestibule instead of unlocking the mailboxes for the 3 apartments and putting the mail in the respective boxes. We called the post office and spoke to the manager of our route and the situation was immediately fixed. (I was really surprised.) Other problems (our mail was not forwarded correctly) was also met with the same prompt and sincere attention. (Again, I was surprised.) I dont know who my husband spoke to but I do know that it took a while to get to a person who would take responsibility. If her remembers, Ill pass it on.

Title: Absentee Ballots?

I have
been hearing the same things about absentee ballot problems. Five people
(four Republicans and one Democrat) have contacted me with information that they
applied for absentee ballots weeks ago and had still not received them. I
checked with the Commissioner's office and was told that they had no record of
an application from one and that the other four had been sent out, but possibly
not until last weekend. Two of them arrived two days ago and were
returned. The other two had not been received as of last
night.

As
much as I would like to have said that this was a conspiracy by the two
Democratic Commissioners to suppress the Republican vote, I suspect that it is
simply overwork and incompetence. If we ever elect a majority of
Republicans to the City Commission, we could expect a step up in
competence.

You
should let your friends know that due to the large number of new registrations,
the state Bureau of Elections has made some important changes in the election
day procedures to make things flow more smoothly and to accomodate the large
numbers of people who want to vote. For this election, only Republicans
will vote on November 2nd, only Democrats will vote on November 3rd and on
November 4th non-partisans and anyone who had not voted before will vote.
I think it will hurt the Republican chances of taking Pennsylvania as we have to
vote first and the Democrats will then have a pretty good idea of how many votes
they will need to overcome the Repulican vote. We'll see how it
works.

Remember to remind your non-Republican friends that they will vote on
either November 3rd or November 4th.

Actually Matt, you are ill-informed and thus spreading bad information.
TO CLARIFY: If you are voting Dem then you can vote on Nov 2. If you
are voting Rep then you can vote on Nov 3. Your party doesn't matter,
that would be illegal. The reason for the split in voting days is
because the new Diabold electronic voting machines are still having
problems, so this simplifies the counting. Since Diabold couldn't seem
to get their machines to register the Dem votes (it a partisan run
company), now anyone showing up on Nov 2 will be assumed to be voting
for Kerry and on Nov 3, the other guy (can't remember his name).

At your service and always ready to spread dis-information,

  1-866-MyVote1
  1-866-our-vote (for serious problems)
The Philadelphia City Commissioners, Voter Registration Office is too
busy sending out their Official Election mail, Authorized by the US
Postal Service to worry about their legal responsibilities to send out
Absentee ballots.

For the first and only time in recorded history (and probably in all
future history as well), the City is telling each individual voter
where their polling place is located. They are also requesting the
Post Office to forward this mail if the addressee has moved, not
requesting that they be informed that the individual no longer lives
there.

On the surface, this is a wonderful and very civic thing to do --
except for the fact that it has never been done before and will never
be done again!

Of course, if our City Commissioners fail to send out similar post
cards for next Spring's primary, we can haul their buts before
Commonwealth court and get them impeached for failing to follow the
same election law they followed in 2004.

Their web site is:
http://www.phillyelection.com/
Interestingly, they have the results for the 2004 General (Unofficial)
Election Results available, if you have a password. ... of course,
whoever did their web pages simply has no clue what they are doing.
None of the images load because they didn't bother to specify the URLs
correctly. One has to wonder why the City Commissioners have this
bootleg website instead of using their official City website:

Re: [UC] Absentee Ballots?

2004-10-28 Thread Stephen Fisher
 http://www.phillyelection.com/
an interesting site. In addition to the missing pictures, I found it
odd that the login page isn't encrypted (httpS:// versus http://),
allowing for hackers a better chance at finding a valid password. I
hope it's just a page of results but if so, then why require password
access to begin with?

After some quick digging I learned more about Philly's voting machines:
Philly's purchase decision was a nightmare--it was long and
controversial. Many people pointed out that they were buying
yesterday's technology and that they should wait for newer DREs. They
didn't. Quoted from:
http://www.votingindustry.com/TabulationVendors/Other/danaher/danaher.htm

Apparently the same company that makes Craftsman tools made our voting
machines (Danaher). I wonder if the voting machines are equiped with
the same laser guides as the Craftsman circular saws...if so, FOLKS
PLEASE DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE LASER! I'd hate to see any
election day injuries (even if you're planning to vote for that Cheney guy).

From the software manufacturer's site: After the polls close, the
Guardian software controls the collection of election results, then
produces reports in flexible, custom formats. I wonder how much
flexibility and customizations there are in the report formats...I'd
be willing to offer my computing assisting in customizing their final
report...I'd be plenty objective...on a more serious note I'm curious
about this: Minimizes under-voting and Eliminates over-voting. I
assume they mean you can't vote for two candidates (over-voting) and
that there will be fewer hanging-chads...

http://guardianvoting.com/gvs/vs.html
Lastly I wonder if Paco Carrillo, a software engineer at Danaher, and
technical contact for phillyelection.com is the same PACO CARRILLO, age
29, of Denver, was arrested for possession with intent to distribute
heroinhe's not but it's a funny coincidence...

Party on my good voting citizens, your election is in good hands with
Danaher.

Good night and vote well,
Mr Rogers
