Clarification:

[bert:~] 10:29:46pm 13 % host debian.slimdevices.com
debian.slimdevices.com is an alias for
www.logitech.com.c.footprint.net.
www.logitech.com.c.footprint.net has address 199.93.34.126
www.logitech.com.c.footprint.net has address 199.93.56.126
www.logitech.com.c.footprint.net has address 209.84.4.126

That should be a bit clearer the difference between round robin and a
CDN.

The resolver returns 3 values. A client will choose one. Randomly.

(Actually, now it seems to be returning a different set of IP's than it
did last I looked... )

The choice of which of those (now 6) IP's I would has nothing to do
with what is closest to me. It's psuedorandom.

I'm well aware of the term.

In this case, though, it seems to be 'dns round robin' in that a DNS
lookup will result in one of the three items listed being used.
Perhaps if I queried from somewhere else I would get a different
response... but the items returned should be consistent (ie, if in NA,
return these values, in EU return these.) Ie, a given user will,
excepting in the case of failure ("the EU data center exploded, quick,
kill that off and return the NA address for everyone!") see the same
selection of hosts.

So the problem is still "one of the three hosts in the round robin
setup got behind in the mirroring."

CDN's and RRDNS fail if the sites are not consistent in their data.

Ie, if the 'Release' file from one server says the current versions is
r30657, yet another server has not yet been updated to have that
release, well, then you see what the orginal poster saw.

They call this a "Content Delivery Network"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_delivery_network). The intent is to serve

There still are a few niggles about this new setup. I've forwarded some of the

I don't know of any script to clean up what you already have, but Robin
Bowes has written a very nice Perl script to convert FLAC to MP3 in a
parallel directory structure, which is great for initially creating the
MP3 copy of a FLAC library. It has a nice option that will only update
the MP3 tags if the only changes to the FLAC were the tags, thus
avoiding re-transcoding everything just because of tag changes. Just
set it going and it will traverse the FLAC directory tree.

Search for flac2mp3.pl or look at www.robinbowes.com. It may not help
you with your current situation, but it could be useful to you in the
future.

The only up to date list is in the source code.
Part of the good part of it being open source, is you can look at the
source and not have to wait until some documentation folks keeps the
documentation up to date. The down side is, of course, that the
documentation folks are always behind the current software.

A 3 folder setup like this is a pretty decent solution. It will take a

If you only want the MP3s for your iTunes and iPod, then why should SBS
ever need to see them? Put the FLACs in one branch of your directory
tree and the MP3s in a separate, parallel branch of the tree. Then
point SBS to the FLAC branch and point iThings to the MP3 branch. For
example, mine looks like this, and works great:

/music/home/ [contains all my FLACs for home use]
/music/mobile/... [is the MP3 copies of the FLAC files]
/music/common_mp3/... [a few tracks I have only in MP3. This folder is
accessible to both the 'home' and 'mobile' branches via symlinks]

I just point SBS to /music/home/ and I get my lossless tracks plus the
few I have only in MP3. Absolutely no point whatsoever to pointing SBS
to /home/mobile/, much less running a second instance of the server.

Maybe I'm missing something important here, but I have FLAC files, files
that are only in mp3/aac, and mp3 files that are dupes of my FLAC files
(for use in itunes/ipod). I easily keep these all separate so that
Squeezebox only sees FlAC and mp3/aac only, while itunes sees only
mp3/aac only plus mp3 versions of FLAC. See this post.

I tend to agree. The iPod is going away, and Flac in iTunes probably
not going to happen.
I run an SC server in a Virtualbox VM, runs globally fine. If you
choose to bridge the VM with a physical interface in the computer, the
SB Server will see the players ok. (With NAT or some other settings the
server / players discovery will not happen.)
I guess you could also use a "jail", but that's going to be a lot of
trouble for just a little gain in reliability, if any.

But perhaps FUSE can help: http://mp3fs.sourceforge.net/
I never used this particular layer; But supposedly you could emerge a
hierarchy of mp3 files for consumption with iTunes ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Kubuntu 9.10 and SBS 7.5 and mysql again!

2010-04-18 Thread wowo

I have installed SBS 7.5 under Ubuntu 9.10 without any problems.
Install *first* mysql 5.1 (with Synaptic) before you install SBS 7.5.
See attachment.
Mysql 5.1 is not standard installed under Ubuntu 9.10.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Kubuntu 9.10 and SBS 7.5 and mysql again!

2010-04-18 Thread mudlark

I rebuilt my server again and I was amazed to find that there is STILL a
compatibility issue with mysql and kubuntu 9.10.

What the feck is going on, is Logitech trying to slide out of any
interest in linux? This issue has been going on for ages and it makes
us linux users seem like losers and I AM NOT PLEASED!

Just for any who gives the slightest interest, it seems that installing
mysql-client is a sort of fix sort of that sorts out the problem, again.
