Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Community Squeeze OS R3
> R5 wasn't an "official" image. I was seeking a simple method to disable WiFi with CSOS R3. My "how to update" query didn't result in suggestions for updating just the web interface, and I saw another note indicating re-install would be prefered to fix other update issues anyway (so I installed R5 :-). I prefer installing full integrated package to match your distribution. Overall, CSOS R5 seems to be working. A centralized method to announce releases / distributions / updates is desirable. It is easy to miss announcements in a long, multi-page thread. LMS log and scanner access via web page shows empty web page in CSOS R5: > Have you checked to see if there is anything contained in > the files? (ie. via the file system rather than via LMS.) Yes, both server.log and scanner.log are non-zero with readable content when accessed via ssh. These were readable via LMS when running CSOS R3. I'm still sorting through the content of server.log files. It looks like I have a few corrupted media files, and there are a few perl runtime exceptions. > How does this combination of Linux and LMS minimize flash > file system write access to prolong flash card life? I'm > interested to deploy a CSOS / Wandboard configuration for > a five year minimum life. Consumer flash devices are great for low frequency write applications, especially appending and not re-writing same "disk blocks" over and over. It's hard to write 100,000 times to any flash card "block" used in a camera application. However, it's not difficult to have high write cycle counts if the flash file system is used in an OS as temporary file space like swap (thus the need for a wear-leveling file system or a different media). I agree, it's not the highest priority task. But a consideration for long life. Thanks again for everybody's effort. gregb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47178 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98544 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

My solution was to pass the command defining the parameters at boot time. Triode suggested I remove those settings and capture the -d all=debug log and then put them back in and do it again and see what is different. I'm going to do that however I'm waiting for my Squeezeplug Raspberry Pi to crash. I want to see how long it is going to stay up ever since I put that experimental firmware in the Raspberry Pi. It's beginning to look like it ISN'T going to crash. I think I'm going into my 4th day of uptime now. But again I may not have been getting 24/96 for a variety of reasons. It may have worked right out of the gate with a different DAC. Best thing we can all do is try things and report them here. Basically when you fill out the questions when installing squeezelite it just writes the file that launches the program. If I follow the prompts and get what I want that's great, however in my case it didn't work out so I wrote my command line defining the program start and called it from somewhere else. That's the beautiful thing about Linux. Always several ways to do something. Never announced, (or a direct link posted), it was going to be the "placebo" test image for the still missing Web-GUI fstab/mount/partition/format testing, that has been delayed due to me not having a development machine for the last 2 weeks. Not that I know of any issues with the R5 image, only that it received very minimal testing. (I believe you and one other have installed it.) gregb wrote: > > 1. Aside from logging, (which could be minimised), and LMS writes to /var/lib/squeezeboxserver, there isn't a lot of I/O. I wouldn't expect there to be issues with failing memory cards. (Assuming they are the cheapest "junk" you can find. I have cards that have been heavily used and abused in cameras, before being pressed into service in embedded devices. The only failure I have seen is from a no-brand card.) Having said that, it was part of the plan, (and admittedly bottom of the list), to have a read-only, (with write via a unionfs over-mount), cut-down image at some point in the future. But it's not something I have been working on, nor intend to work on until after we have added the JS hardware into the mix. I got same results. 24b48 & 24b96 are both playing perfect now. Only 24b88K stutters in de first 5-10 seconds and after that it seems to play fine (same as hw) If don't give any -a settings it makes no difference now. In V09 I only got 16b48K without the -a settings. Now 24b48 & 24b96 are detected correctly and playing without any problems. Only 24b88K files are stuttering in the first 5-10 seconds. 24b88K files are still detected as 24b96K when I do cat. Musical Fidelity V-DAC II Both hw and plughw are working now. All files are detected correctly. But I don't have a good feeling listening for longer time. It's of course much better then in v09 but I think the sound is not stable and clean. When I compare the original CD sound with the stream (it makes no difference if I use 16b44 or 24b48/88/96) there is a difference. When listening to the Pi hicks/pops are hearable who are not in te original CD. No distortion or clicks just hicks/pops. I don't better way to explane it. Hope this helps. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Community Squeeze OS R3
Some notes from recent CSOS update from R3 to R5: a. Downloaded CSOS-Wandboard-Dual-R5-20130514-1.img.7z from http://www.communitysqueeze.org/images/wandboard/CSOS/ . b. Re-image onto 8 GB flash card. c. CSOS setup is quick (establish CIFS mount, set timezone, disable wireless, Disable and Stop Squeezelite, Enable and Start Squeeze Server). d. Configure LMS on port 9000 (set mount point for media folder, clear library and rescan everything). CSOS on Wandboard is great! Observations (no complaints): 1. Library scan took longer on CSOS R5 than CSOS R3. 2. Logitech Media Server Log File access from LMS web page shows empty web page (/var/log/squeezeboxserver/server.log) 3. Scanner Log File access from LMS web page shows empty web page (/var/log/squeezeboxserver/scanner.log) 4. CSOS R5 seems slower than R3 (I'm using SB classics) - are others seeing this?) Questions: Q1: Realizing CSOS is still beta, what is the CSOS stable release plan? Q2: How does this combination of Linux and LMS minimize flash file system write access to prolong flash card life? I'm interested to deploy a CSOS / Wandboard configuration for a five year minimum life. I'm testing right now for a few hours. I still get some occasional pops. I increased the buffersize to 800 with the following command: -o hw:CARD=M2496,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer -a 800:4 Seems better but I still get some pops. After that I tried:-o plughw:CARD=M2496,DEV=0 -n piCorePlayer -a 800:4. Seems to work also but don't know yet 100%. I don't have time today for further testing. I'll try the new settings for sabre dac tomorrow and report back. I really think you have made great effort with the new test release of piCoreplayer. Thanks again! Hi willem I think we will continue the testing here. Could you try to use plughw: instead of hw: for your sabre card? Then try to listen to the output, is iy better for 88 content? I like the I Musici recordings and all this period instrument fachism in classical music, sometimes drives me nuts ;-) Ok, having Bach played by the Berlin Philharmonics in full swing as Karajan sometimes did, is slightly bizarre (yet fun), but all this original instrument stuff with conductors who just got off the phone where Bach told them exactly what his music should sound like, is sometimes headache inducing - plus often also not correct. Music is alive and interpreters should do with it as they please, the composer would probably also use modern instruments. It all depends on finding people who want to listen to it and if it gets the message and emotions across. Sorry for this OT - but a player with a good DAC can actually help make the music come alive in our livingrooms, so let us hope for the very best with our Community player (back on topic again).
