Yes to both of those, and huge respect to you for all that you've done
to make things work on the Pi!!
It'd be nice if the Sony app would let go of the BT connection when it's
not using it so that pCP can have a go from a different device.

I have used USB HDD for my LMS music for 15 years. In that time 2 drives
have failed so I just plug in the backup USB drive and buy a new one.

I have found unpowered backup drives don't fail (none yet). I don't
think a NAS is any safer than that. All powered drives will fail
eventually.

I my circumstances I can't see any need for the expense of a NAS.

I don’t subscribe at all to the idea that your music library should be
on any kind of USB drive. In my experience running a pCP LMS with files
on a quality NAS is just as quick and massively safer and robust.
The idea that an SSD in a USB enclosure is somehow the way to go is a
waste of an SSD in my opinion. You don’t need fast storage for low level
read activity (with only occasional writes).
LMS itself and the db on an SSD on the other hand is well worth it as
the GUI performance whether default, material or any of the apps is much
quicker.

Thanks for the info gordonb3.

Most of my USB drives are far older than 2 years, but all but one are
backup drives so they are not powered up very often.

The LMS USB drive only has only the music files on it, nothing is
written to it during normal operation. Thru chance I have probably
cycled my drives as "the LMS USB drive".

My LMS boots from the SD card.

piCorePlayer does not start syslog but default.

So with these factors in place, I have managed to dodge the bullet.

OK, I reformatted the SD card in Windows, now it appears usable.

On the LMS page I mounted it as crabtree.

On the main page it appears in the list of available save locations.

Creating an image now . . . it took 12mins, although true I didn't

I see similar to the 2 options you get, they are both on the SD card in
use.

I also put a blank SD card into an adapter, on the LMS page I see
picture below.

No matter what you save the image to you will still need to *burn* it to
a SD card to use it, it isn't a copy of the files, it's an image, it
needs *burning* to use it. You may as well use an attached USB stick.

Examples below.

USB drives are typically `green` drives with onboard logic that will
spin down and park(!) the drive if it hasn't been used for ~7 seconds.
These type of drives are horrible for running a linux based OS as they
will kill themselves after about 2 years use because the OS usually only
writes new log entries every ~15 seconds. You can check the so-called
`load_cycle_count` with smartctl (smartmontools) to verify how close
your drive is to permanent failure.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Backup piCorePlayer without removing SD card

2021-07-30 Thread AndyTwizzle

I have piCorePlayer on a Raspberry Pi 4 with the official 7" touchscreen
fitted inside a touchscreen case that doesn't allow access to the SD
card. I've removed the back of the case a couple of times already to
get the to the SD card, which has already caused the screw threads on
the back of the touchscreen to loosen, making the touchscreen slightly
loose in the case.

I'd like to create periodic backup copy/image of the piCorePlayer SD
card to another SD card without having to take apart the touchscreen
case, ideally using a USB SD card adapter plugged into the Pi's USB
socket - in the same way as 'SD Card Copier' works in Rasbperry OS.

Is there anyway I can achieve this within the piCorePlayer OS - or
perhaps another way via SSH or SFTP to another PC? Ideally, I'd like to
be able to put the backup SD Card I create straight into another Pi and
boot piCorePlayer straight from that (in case I want to use it in a Pi
case without a touchscreen in future).

Any tips?

Thanks

Andy

Just a detail but I understood that starting with kernel 5.x, linux
supports multiqueue schedulers: mq-deadline, multiqueue bfq, kyber etc.
If this is the case, the bit about elevator options seems outdated under
advanced settings. Reading some comparisons, I chose none. I continue to
have sensational speed both with a rpi4 and a pi zero.

I think it's very device specific. I have an old Western Dig 2TB USB
drive, and hdparm won't spin it down. I know hd-idle on raspbian would
spin it down OK from previous experience, but I tried a chunk of messing
around to get it to spin down on pcp with no luck (but didn't find the
hd-idle thread, else I'd have tried that). It wasn't a problem for me
as I had a "general" use pi as well running dietpi and just moved the
drive to that one instead, but given that we have hdparm available as an
extension, it would likely be appreciated to have hd-idle available as
well.

I guess either you need or you don't care at all.
I tried Hdparm first but it didn't cut it. It simpy couldn't reach the
disk through the USB-Sata controller in the enclosure.

Without HD-Idle I probably would have ditched pCP in a few weeks as I
don't really have anywhere where noise doesn't matter.

I'm so glad it didn't come to that. pCP is awesome and so is this forum.
