I have used USB HDD for my LMS music for 15 years. In that time 2 drives have failed so I just plug in the backup USB drive and buy a new one. :)
I have found unpowered backup drives don't fail (none yet). I don't think a NAS is any safer than that. All powered drives will fail eventually.
