USB drives are typically `green` drives with onboard logic that will
spin down and park(!) the drive if it hasn't been used for ~7 seconds.
These type of drives are horrible for running a linux based OS as they
will kill themselves after about 2 years use because the OS usually only
writes new log entries every ~15 seconds. You can check the so-called
`load_cycle_count` with smartctl (smartmontools) to verify how close
your drive is to permanent failure.
