With 1 gig of ram.

Squeezebox runs fine, the webinterface is to slow for decent usage.
Updating db takes around 45 minutes (internal sata disk). (+-340gig)

I also run (Because of slow webinterface) a copy on my main machine
(E8400 + 8 gig ram), here the interface is fast, and updating db takes
11 minutes (via gigabit network to prev. machine).

including to multiple sync'd SBs. The web ui was slow. And it took
around an hour to scan 4000 tracks. But they still stream music
perfectly adequately.

This is my shared server - it runs SC7.3.3 (production) on Ubuntu and
also a VM with another Ubuntu instance and SC7.4 (testing). There's 2GB
of memory and it runs very snappy and has no problem with transcoding
etc (I also use it as a video server which has to transcode video, works
great). Full rescan (local disks, 20k tracks) takes about 20 mins. Also
very low power, which I like - ideal processor for SC IMHO.

2009-09-15 Thread epoch1970

Smallest I have run SC 7.2 on is AMD Geode LX 500MHz / 256MB ram
(pcengines alix)
Naturally the bogomips rates around 1000 (cpu freq x number of procs x
2 = bogomips, AFAIK)
SC runs on one single core, I think, so I'd doubt the bogomips
reading.

Library about 12k songs. I have 3 physical SBs, and usually test with a
few more software players. The only transcoding I do is when using
AlienBBC.

This server behaves normally, just a bit slow when loading the web
interface, and when scanning the DB from USB drive (1h30).
I think 256MB Ram for a headless machine is the threshold.

2009-09-15 Thread pablolie

thing is you really don't need a lot of CPU power to run a responsive
SC.

right now i am running it on a pretty powerfully spec'd machine (see my
sig, but i have aggressive power-saving turned on), the bogus bogomix
claims 6665.83... response time is of course pretty immediate.

but a few weeks ago i ran SC on a 10 year old supercompact laptop that
wasn't fast even then (Transmeta based!) with only 380mb of memory.. and
it worked just fine, and response time was good.

you don't need a lot of horsepower at all, especially if you dedicate a
machine to run SC...

[SlimDevices: Unix] just curious about performance

2009-09-14 Thread pski

ask here.

I'm wondering what processor/published speed and the bogomips of your

If you're doing the vortexbox thing, it's on the status page.

Otherwise, open a terminal and use:

whatever your prompt iscat /proc/cpuinfo

Thanks y'all.

I've run squeezecenter on completely under-powered machines like P2/P3
~500mhz. Performance was perfectly acceptable for medium-sized (200
album) collections and a bit of to-FLAC transcoding. The only thing you
really need is about 256MB of ram for the server to run in.

BTW, bogomips is just like it says. Bogus. It's a completely useless
non-metric of anything.

Unless you have a gigantic 1000+ album collection, any PC will handle
squeezecenter just fine on Linux.

Of course its a bogus metric. But its easy to get.

I would not call 1000+ large, since I have 800+
I will claim that having one or more SqueezeBoxes causes you to buy more
CDs.

I ran for years on a P3-500 and it was fine. I think memory is much more
important than CPU speed.

The more recent versions of SqueezeCenter/SqueezeBoxServer take more
resources than older versions, feature creep and all that. Its expected
that SBS 8.0 will reduce the requirements once its released, but I don't
expect it until late this year or early next.
