Thanks abt SSH -

I did get a static address on the controller w/ssh, and this exercise
has made me a big fan of winscp.

Yes for setting of static ip without having to turn of dchp.

And also changing network settings without having to run the whole
setup guide.

Changed bootup sound and splash screen ( as an experiment)

You can change the wireless password too via ssh .

If you dont have netstumbler or similar you can survey wifi via the
command line .

I have used more on the Touch to disable wifi ,logging samba and analog
outs etc.

On Touch before the disabling of volume control worked properly, you
had to do it by editing a *.lua file

On both controller Touch and Radio
changed the motd file to show info about me instead of standard
greeting (if they get stolen )

After editing for example the network setting you have to reboot the
device this can also be done over ssh for all squeezeplay devices.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ssh/sharing via window manager?

2011-05-28 Thread aubuti

If you have to ask what you will use it for, then you probably don't
need it. :-)

How have I used ssh on the Controller?

1) used it in the early days to direct output to the headphone jack
(this is now done automatically)
2) setting a true static IP address
3) customizing the menus for the SqueezeIR plugin (I think this also
now has a better UI than ssh)
4) changing the background color of the active menu item (this can now
be done much more easily using the Patch Installer)

On the SB Radio I've used ssh to change the music used for the fallback
alarm.

The bottom line is that I have found ssh useful for trying/customizing
newer plugins, applets, and patches. Most of those that people find
useful eventually get a more convenient user interface to change the
settings. I think (2) above is the only exception in my case.

Yes - I just recently discovered the SSH feature on the Duet
controller...now the question is, what advantage is this ? I can run
WinScp and get a graphical listing, but what am I looking to
change/alter/hack on the controller ???

I guess I am asking how do people use SSH and their controller /

Thanks , I've read about dropbear somewhere I' was curius it's seems to
replace many standard linux things, but does it faster with less cpu.
But with some things stripped out or simplified.

Seems like a good thing for embedded small cpu and memory starved
things like the Touch .

My router also has dropbear

man sftp-server on, say Ubuntu...

sftp is invoked by sshd, but is not part of sshd or the ssh protocol
itself, but is tunneled by ssh.

you need sftp-server, which neither touch nor controller support (as i
recall they don't use openssh at all, but dropbear -- which doesn't
include sftp-server).

I also believed that, I can do that with own server. But when i do the
exact same thing with either controller radio or Touch it does not work
from ubuntu ?

I'm always getting "ssh program unexpectedly exited"

What do you mean? I always thought that sftp was just a UI abstraction
on the client side. If the server supports ssh, then an sftp client can
connect to it.

Yes samba works perfectly: after hunting around for instructions (and
the ones I found giving trouble), I just tried replacing ssh:// by
smb:// and it works fine:

open a folder, type control-l to see the location, then enter

smb://[SB's ip number]

and it works fine: I see the USB drive (plugged into the touch) in the
folder window. [Presumably this only works on more recent versions of
ubuntu---it must also be well-known?]

But then it's suposed to work with samba , you can turn on sharing
somewhere in the menu, I don't have any USB drive myself and i'm not
running the server on my touch, so I have not turned on sharing.

But other users have sucessfully used samba.

Thanks. Yes the main aim was to ease access the USB drive plugged in the
touch---the lack of sftp support seems to be the problem. I will
investigate samba, but for now I just remembered the "scp -r" option to
recursivley copy whole directories much more easily using scp.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] ssh/sharing via window manager?

2010-08-15 Thread Mnyb

That would be sftp://r...@x.x.x.x/

And usually do this by choosing

Places > connect to server in ubuntu

type ssh user etc etc as required.

Thats said I don think Touch or Radio or controller supports sftp at
all .

samba could be used for the shared drive (usually your USB
drive/stick).
