I used the contact form for emergency support requests. I got a response
back last Saturday from David in less than an hour. Things were OK by
Sunday. When diesel went sideways again on Wednesday and last night I again
used the contact form for emergency support requests but have not received
any responses for either of the last 2 emergency support requests. That
being said I see that a few hours after both requests the load on diesel
went back to LOW.

Any word on why the server load has prolonged spikes?

Is there a user on the affected machines trying to run needlessly
complicated scripts?

Many years ago there was discussion here about CPU throttling on the
on-rev servers, as we'd expect with any shared hosting service so a
single account can't dominate the machine and deny use for others (I
once heard someone say that they felt it was a reasonable expectation
that they should be able to run CPU-maxing analytics programs on a
shared host for 7 or 8 hours at a time )>

It may be helpful to know what causes these unusual server loads.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here Richard. David does an admirable
job managing the on-rev servers considering how hammered they are. FWIW I
recently moved my domains over to an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS VPS at Linode and have
been very happy with what they offer. Quite a bit more hands on than on-rev but
definitely worth the setup time. SSD too which is nice ;-)

Cheers

Re: wtf diesel?

2015-11-17 Thread Matthias Rebbe | M-R-D

Two or three days ago the On-Rev status page showed a high load of diesel.
Although the server load of diesel is now low again, it could be that the
server has to deliver a massive amount of emails which get stuck due to the
high load.

And this could be the reason why the emails are now coming in w/o order. Newly
sent emails could be delivered earlier than the “older” ones in the queue.
This is a “normal” behavior after such an event. At least i experienced the
same behavior on non On-Rev servers also.

Regards,

Matthias

RE: wtf diesel?

2015-11-16 Thread Ralph DiMola
Same here. I put in an emergency support request on Saturday because mail
was not getting delivered. David replied in less than an hour and asked me
what email address I was sending to. I answered and told him that it was
this email address. Email was working on Sunday but a slew of the real and
test emails from Saturday were just delivered 1/2 hour ago. Never heard what
the solution was but it did not seem to release the emails that were sent
before it was fixed.

Are your emails still being delivered late? If so I would put in an
emergency on-rev support ticket immediately.

Re: Diesel is down

2015-07-10 Thread Richmond
Face facts, RunRev's web system: servers, web-pages are totally
compromised at present, and unless RunRev gets
its act together really quickly they are going to end up with both mud
on their faces and a major loss of faith on the

half of their loyal installed base.

It is pretty telling that RunRev are NOT making any sort of obvious
effort to keep us informed about what is going one, and what
they are doing (if they are doing anything beyond sitting in Edinburgh
and dithering in the hope that things will just go away) to

rectify what is an extremely bad situation.

Of course cynical types might line up the situation with the servers and
the website with the fact that they obviously hired a
bloody bad company to do their web-design (about whom they were crowing
about 2 years ago) resulting in an un-navigable

pig's breakfast . . .

Malice in Wonderland? or

plain incompetence in certain areas which highly skilled software
developers should not have to concern themselves

and should be taken care of by competent web-designers? or

some deeper seated malaise? or

a crisis of will?

I don't know what is going on,

BUT, what I do know is that a company that have produced what I believ
to be one of the most innovative programming environments
that very successfully strikes the balance between traditional
programming languages and the MIckey Mouse brigade seems to have

lost a very large part of the plot somewhere . . .

. . . blame DDoS attacks if you want . . . but that will only keep
people off your backs for so long . . . and makes bloody bad advertising
copy.

-

If one wants to get personal, I was informed that RunRev were going to
run a feature about my LiveCode classes in my school in

Bulgaria, and was sent a sort of questionnaire . . .

What is the result?

Some thing that does me NO favours at all, is obviously just cobbled
together out of the answers to my questionnaire coupled
with 2 of the least useful images from my FaceBook page and presented as
if I had written the thing.

I would NEVER have written something so illiterate and plain bloody bad!

I have worked as a University lecturer in 5 Universities world-wide, and
that sort of article would not stand up to anything of
that sort for 5 minutes and makes me look like some sort of schoolboy
hobbyist, which I can quite assure you I am not.

Had I known that the answers to the questionnaire were to be presented
as an article by myself I would have sat down and spent
at least a day, and probably longer, to produce a credible piece,
complete with Bibliography, that did justice to what I was doing, instead of
what it ended up as: a squib giving the impression that I was
dumbing-down programming for a load of dopey children: far from the truth!

I will, after the dust has settled, and my temper [which is UTTERLY
FILTHY at present] has returned to something like an even keel, write
a PROPER explanation of what I am doing [probably a summary of the paper
I will be presenting to an academic conference in September]
which I shall append as an appendix to the farcical How to teach
coding thing in the BLOG.

I understood, Richard Gaskin, that your good offices [which are, indeed,
very good], were offered on a voluntary basis,

not as part of any official RunRev thing.

A service provider (and that is what RunRev now is) that wanted people
to believe it really cared would be pumping out
hourly bulletins on what it was doing anent its DDos (or whatever it
really is).

NO, most definitely not.

Often, my concern runs away with itself and it comes across as bad
manners, but it is real concern about a programming
suite/language/IDE/RAD/whatever that I care desperateyly about, and have
invested the last 15 years in learning how to use.

If calling a spade a spade rather than an earth relocation
instrument is bad manners; then I'm bad mannered.

But being mealy-mouthed only seems to get so far.

could you kindly share with us the benefit of your experience and let
us know what you'd recommend they do?

Well:

1. Sort out the website so that it has some sort of logical hierarchy
and is east to navigate and find what one wants.

2. Ensure that web-pages don't disappear without any warning, and that
some links don't lead to dead ends.

3. Start marketing LiveCode as if they mean it: get it onto CDs attached
to mags, get it onto TV shows, radio shows, Windows fan websites,

Mac fan websites, Linux fan websites.

4. Get stuff out to ministries of education all across Europe and the
Americas, Australasia, and, why not? the rest of the world.

5. Set up some sort of certification for training courses so people
teaching the language don't just give their students pretty certificates

that have no external validity.

6. Stuff the website with nearly every single example of commercial
software produced using LiveCode so website readers can see

just exactly how wide a range of stuff can be produced using LiveCode.

7. Have special sections of the website where people can see stuff
produced for iOS and Android with LiveCode; possibly with embedded movies

so they can see them in action.

8. Mirror its services so that a DDoS attack wouldn't have much of an
effect at all as a backup mirror would kick into place.

9. Listen to the large number of grumps that have appeared with
increasing frequency, demonstrate that listening is going on,

and respond within as rapid time-frame as possible to those grumps.

10. End of the week, and I am tired, as I'm sure almost everybody else
is; but I am sure the list could get longer and some folk might like to

help lengthen it.

I don't know what is going on

No argument here. ;)

. . . blame DDoS attacks if you want

Seems a reasonable thing do to when faced with a DDoS attack.

However, many websites that do suffer DDoS attacks seem to get things up
and running again remarkably quickly . . .

The thing that is a real pity is that Runtime Revolution LiveCode has
got it, the magical thingy that makes for a programming environment which,
while allowing babies to start producing functional stuff very quickly
indeed [I have seen that these last few weeks], also has unbelievable
high-level capabilities, and yet it is floating around like some fort of
flounder at the bottom of the sea when it should be like a shark or a
barracuda up there ripping sh*t out of all the other programming
languages. It isn't, and I think if we are all honest we have a fairly
good idea why.

Kevin and his team are brilliant programmers, but their public face is
just not up to scratch.

I may sing like Caruso, but because my face is like a pig's bottom I am
just not going to get engagements at La Scala and so on.

Well, I'd be *very* wary of doing that.
I believe the the on-rev servers have the latest version of WP
installed, with the latest security patches in place. WordPress is
notoriously insecure, so you could be letting yourself and other users

installing a different custom version.

Sounds like a file permissions issue to me. Either on the WWW2 directory or
any of the dirs on the way down to install.php

That's where I'd start to look. Maybe it's even got permissions right, but
just owned by another user other than the one running the web server.

Oh, I missed the message about the htaccess. That would explain it. ;) It's
trying to protect you from yourself by blocking access to certain kinds of
files (install.php in this case) that might be left over erroneously
post-install.

I believe the the on-rev servers have the latest version of WP

notoriously insecure, so you could be letting yourself and other users

Dear Mark,

Happily none of the servers were down on this occasion. As I explained
to you when I responded to your ticket on on-rev, the issue you saw
was that the status page itself was down for a period, and I'm glad to
say I was able to rectify this for you when it was reported via the
Urgent ticketing system.

I see that you have now submitted a ticket mentioning an issue with
your email, which I am now dealing with for you.

Instances of our servers being down or other major incidents affecting
customers have enormously reduced since the successful transfer of our
entire hosting operation to the new service. We continue to work on
improving our systems to ensure ever greater reliability. I will look
at introducing a new stat on the status page showing percentage uptime
of our servers.

As we have mentioned in the past, the best place to get issues
resolved with on-rev is via our ticketing system, we do not
necessarily routinely monitor this list, especially at night.

Warm Regards,

David

It's the same ticket, just an update to your response. As I mentioned in
that ticket, diesel email was unresponsive for 15 hours yesterday. I don't
look at the status page unless things aren't working, so for the most part I
don't care what it shows. When I did look at it, the status of diesel showed
Down/Warning, which corresponded with the symptoms. My problem isn't with
the status display, but with the loss of service.

If, as you say, the servers were actually up and running at the time of the
outage, then I fail to see how an uptime display will help.

As we have mentioned in the past, the best place to get issues
resolved with on-rev is via our ticketing system, we do not
necessarily routinely monitor this list, especially at night.

My posting here was to alert other users to the problem, not to get your
attention. That I did through issuing a trouble ticket.

[on-rev] Problem with revIgniter on DIESEL - any clue!?

2013-09-06 Thread Robert Mann
My revIgniter sites throw an error related to file paths since the last few
last days.
I have looked in revIgniter files to identify the problem. Checked the
confif files were OK.
Could find no clue except this possible bug 9869 *depending on the server
version*.

I asked david at on-rev support to check these question and am still waiting
although I really would need these sites to run for tomorrow saterday!!!

If anybody has experiences the same kind of problem please do tell me. It
would be surprising that they installed a different version of rev server
just for my account if that turned out to be the culprit.

the Syndrom is an error message with a really wrong path like :

file /home/rman/public_html/groovyarch.com/index.irev
row 53, col 1: include: could not find file
(/home/rman/public_html/revIgniter/system/revigniter/../revIgniter/system/revigniter/Common.irev)
file
/home/rman/public_html/groovyarch.com/../revIgniter/system/revigniter/RevIgniter.irev

It seems that revIgniter is not getting the same file and path information
as used to be
the full path /home/rman/public_html/groovyarch.com/ is added in the front
hence the problem.

and this happens at the start of the operation prior to reading the actual
web application.

possible source ::
There is a bug (9869) in LiveCode Server confirmed by RunRev. LiveCode
Server versions
4.6.3 up to 5.0.2 have two incorrect path environment variables on Lion and
Mountain
Lion. These variables are:

$_SERVER[\PATH_TRANSLATED\]
$_SERVER[\PATH_INFO\]
As revIgniter is heavily dependent on path variables this means that there
is no way
to run revIgniter using the said OS / server versions.
Note: This issue is fixed in LiveCode Server release: 6.0.0-rc-1.

so questions pending :
0) when has my account being transferred from odin to diesel? And if not
recently, if
the server has been transferred to another ISP lately?

1) what kind of server is diesel :: is it a mac os x? what version of OS X?

2) if mac os X with LION or MOUNTAIN LION :: WHAT VERSION of live code
server is
running on diesel :: there was a bug in previous versions on mac os x
servers.

3) if that is positive, then cure the problem by installing latest live code
server 6
that fixes that issue.

If any of you guys had any part of that info.. please do forward, thanks!

good day,
Robert
