Re: About object alignment in transcript...

2003-12-02 Thread WIlliam Griffin
This should not be hard at all.
You either have a list of items you want aligned, or a group, or other
methods (like within some frame ..rect, selected objects, etc )

For a quick example lets say I have 400 graphics on a page and I want
to align all the green ones

case "center"
put the loc of selection into locxy
repeat with x = 1 to number of graphics of stack "SampleStack"
if the backgroundColor of graphic x of stack "SampleStack" is green
then
set the loc of graphic x of stack "SampleStack" to locky -- center
aligned
end if
end repeat

I'm fairly sure you can use left, right, top, bottom, as well.
Items of a rect will also provide a point to shove other objects up
agains.

Hope that helps (and works).

Other workaround - use RevZilla... I'm pretty sure the My Bugs report
shows unconfirmed bugs as well in the list. (If not, let me know and
I'll add it.)

Have you tried Richmond M's revTools hack? I'm finding it really useful
- you can anchor it in various spots, and get a floating mini-palette
with the hand/arrow, and navigation arrows that work even when in the

RE: revTools at startUp - again?

2003-12-02 Thread Chipp Walters
Hi Thomas,

Yep, I know about the Mac bug regarding the menubar. It's already fixed in a
beta version I'm using.

One thing about altPlugin architecture. It's designed to NOT change or
modify ANY part of RR IDE code. I'm pretty careful about ever modifying the
IDE code and only do it when I absolutely have to. I'd rather add a plugin
to do something than change the source of the IDE.

It's probably decent advice to not use plugins that do change the source
code.

Re: revTools at startUp - again?

2003-12-02 Thread Thomas J McGrath III
Chipp,

This is from the altplugin.rev palette where there is a hide stack
command - I did try this with that changed to show but nothing
happened. Then I added the open stack "revTools" as palette and I have
a nasty work around.

When REv opens first I see the revTools and then it hides and then I
see altplugin and it moves to top left under menu bar. Then revTools
opens up again and is a palette. It is not perfect but for now I can
ignore until someone tells me what was changed with these plugins.

 lock screen
  loadAltPlugs
  if exists(stack "revTools") then
hide stack "revTools" -- tried this as show stack "revTools" but no
go.
  end if
open stack "revTools" as palette -- my addition.. reopens revTools
for me to use.
  unlock screen
send "answerVersion" to me in 20 milliseconds
send "setMyLoc" to me in 20 milliseconds
end openStack

Thanks

Re: revTools at startUp - again?

2003-12-02 Thread Thomas J McGrath III
Chipp, I installed a Green revTool plugin in my plugins folder from the
REV site and didn't like it so I took it out, however the other plugin
must have written a code that hid the REV revTool and after I deleted
it I now don't know what code was altered. I just want to track it down
and fix it.
The Blue tool bar is cool and I like the archive save. However it would
load under the top tool bar of REV so I changed the position that 'it'
opens to which occurs just fine. Now if I can find the code that was
changed from the green plugin. I don't think it was the Blue tool bar
that caused my problem but the green one. You know the one that works
in either horizontal or vertical bars as separate plugins.

Can I put a on preopenstack with open revTools at Loc,Loc any where in
the REV Application since I can't get into the main REV stack??

Thanks

RE: RunRev

2003-12-02 Thread Chipp Walters
Rome,

Check out SourceForge for some existing command-line programs (VirtuaDub
comes to mind). Then you could write a really nice interface 'wrapper'
around it to do specific things. For instance:

How about a simple program which can generate cool title video animations
with only a few clicks.

Or, a really nice simple to use interface for SendMail. There are many
command line programs which do very cool stuff, if you just know how to use
them. RR would be perfect as a GUI interface for them.

best,

Chipp

You need to make a directory walker. You have to loop trough all the
folders and set the defaultfolder to it, then loop trough these folders
etc. Watch out for the .. directory on macosx and unix systems, it
might trap you in a infinite loop.

The thing that will trap you into a infinite loop is a "symbolic link".

Here is the problem & workaround:

1) When you open a bugzilla bug, it as marked as state UNCO

2) If and when the bug is assigned, it will be marked as ASSI
3) At some point bugzilla was changed so that the "My Bugs" preset

disappear because they don't show up in "My Bugs".

Query existing bug reports with criteria: reporter = [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ah, the grab command! That's perfect, Monte, just what I was looking
for. I knew Rev's Transcript had to have an easier solution.

Is there really any comparison? Consider the ActionScript code:

on (press){
startDrag(this);
}
on (release){
stopDrag();
}
And Transcript:

on mouseDown
grab me
end mouseDown
To my thinking, Transcript is much easier to write, read, and
understand, once you know the proper command.

Thanks again!

If it's a simple drag then you might want to see the grab command. More
complex drags can be done using mouse events (particularly mouseMove).

As a very general rule, "the result" is used for error info while "it"

Yep... download DropDMG (or use disk copy) to make drive images or use

If it's a simple drag then you might want to see the grab command. More
complex drags can be done using mouse events (particularly mouseMove).

Great. You could also do:

if the time is in "5:00 AM,2:30 PM" then doMyStuff

It occurred to me that if you want to be absolutely safe in catching the
correct time, you might want to send every 50 seconds or so to allow a
little overlap between minutes.

Not sure if you can get at the alignment scripts in Rev, but if not,
alignment scripts are accessible in MetaCard.
On a related note, I've always believed that object alignment is somewhat
non-standard in Rev and MC. In most layout applications, when you align
objects to the left, for example, all objects move to the extreme left of
all selected objects, not the first object selected
In MetaCard, your choice of "the starting object" determines the
"leftmost" object, although I've noticed inconsistent behavior here.
Sometimes it obeys the first to last selected rule, and sometimes it
takes the layer order of the objects to much cursing on my part, I
may add.

Re: revTools at startUp - again?

2003-12-02 Thread Sarah
I expect the script for opening the revTools is hidden in the locked
Home stack.
What happens if you clear any extra stacks out of the Plugins folder?
Try selecting "Revolution UI Elements in Lists" from the View menu,
then looking in the Application Browser to see if it lists revTools and
if so, check exactly what stack it thinks is called revTools.
If all else fails, re-install Revolution and add back your plugins one
at a time until you find the culprit :-)

Drag n Drop Objects in Flash vs. Rev

2003-12-02 Thread Alan Golub
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I perused this month's issue of
MacDesign, and found a cute Flash MX tutorial for the holidays. The
final Flash movie displayed a bare X-mas tree with several glowing
ornaments on the floor around the tree. The user could click on the
ornaments and drag them onto the tree, effectively "decorating" their
own digital tree. The tutorial covered implementing the drag-and-drop
functionality through the "on startDrag" and "on stopDrag" ActionScript
events, and how to give each ornament a cool-looking pulsating glow
effect (essentially by creating a motion tween in which the brightness
of the ornament object continuously loops from low to high).

Reading the tutorial, I couldn't help but think what a neat little
holiday toy to build and share with family and friends -- perhaps with
my own embellishments, such as falling snow, an on-off switch for the
tree lights, and a holiday music soundtrack, of course.

I built a first draft in Flash MX 2004 in about 4 hours, including
actually drawing the tree and several different ornaments within Flash
itself. I'm no Flash expert, but the tutorial made it easy.

For kicks, and because I thought I could do a much better version of
the same project (probably in even less time), I decided to try to
build the project from scratch in Revolution. Unfortunately, I ran into
difficulty right away when I realized that there seems to be no built
in handler to implement drag and drop functionality for Revolution
objects. I checked the documentation, but couldn't find it anywhere (as
far as I can tell, the "drag" and "drop" commands in Rev relate only to
dragging and dropping text into fields).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Do Rev objects have built
in drag and drop functionality, and if so, how is it accessed?

Much thanks!

Are you sure ?

IMHO, C compilers (Code Warrior, Visual C...) are scary...

But not C, nor assembler.

Futhermore, Rev is scary, especially when you're used to the
"vintage" MetaCard IDE...;-) just kidding of course...

More seriously, when using certain transcript commands, it feels
very close from using APIs or C librairies...
And C still allows you to develop things you can't even dream to
do with Rev (like networked realtime interactive 3D graphics,
realtime FFTs and other sound / image processing, high end
scientific / statistic calculations...).
Actually, the association between Rev (for front ends and a lot of
other tasks) and externals written in C is a killer...

Re: Repeating events

2003-12-02 Thread Sarah
Hi Bill,

You have already received some good advice here, but having done quite
a lot of this sort of thing, here is some extra advice:
- store the script run times in 24 hour format - that makes it much
easier to handle the transition to the following day.
- have a routine that is called on startup or openStack that sets the
next script run time and sends the message. If this makes sure to
cancel any pending messages to your script, it can be run whenever you
might be doubtful about the message.
- after the script has run, call this routine again to set the
following one, making sure that it doesn't set it for it's own minute
again.
- ALWAYS check for left-over messages so that you aren't getting
multiple sends to the same script.

I have a set of standard message sending scripts I use:
cancelMessageName -- cancels all messages with the specified name
cancelMessageID -- cancels all messages with the specified id
setupNextCall -- cancels messages then sends a new one
sendMessageAt -- sends a message at a particular time
If you are interested, let me know and I can send you them off-list.

Cheers,
Sarah

some arbitrary time to the next 5:00 AM. Normally the script will run
automatically but it will be possible that the user might run it
manually at any time.

convert the short time to dateItems
add 1 to item 3 of it -- tomorrow
put 5 into item 4 of it -- 5 AM
put 0 into item 5 of it -- :00 seconds
convert it to seconds
put it into vNextTime
convert the time to seconds -- current time
put it into vNow
put vNextTime - vNow into vTimeOffset -- number of seconds until the
next 5:00 AM

This works OK for one repeating time per day but I want more than one
(at this point it is two but it would be good to make a general case
for any number of times the script is to be run).

Is there a simple way to track multiple repeating events without going

Re: HELP with mov FLASHING

2003-12-02 Thread Thomas J McGrath III
Ken, Heather,

I figured out what was going wrong. I had a selection changed in the
main stack that was being called when the movie in a substack was being
clicked on. I don't know if I like that happening from a substack or
not but I took it out of the main stack and put it in the shared
background group of the cards I needed a selectionChanged on. Below is
my script - I probably should have put a field checker before locking
the screen etc. -- it appears that once the frames were changed in the
movie a selectionChanged was sent from the substack to the mainstack
where this code was.

on selectionChanged
  lock screen
put the number of this card into lmyCard
find the clickText in field "SearchField" of card "Glossary..."
if the result is "Not found" -- not the text of me in field
"SearchField"
then
  -- beep
else
put value(the foundLine) into field "Glos" -- background group
field
end if
go card lmyCard -- keep us from switching to the card "Glossary..."
stay right here
unlock screen
end selectionChanged

Thanks All,

Near Panic But OK Now. WHEWW!!!

Re: Control Ids & Ordinals of Cloned Stacks

2003-12-02 Thread Sarah
I reference menu buttons by id rather than name to support application
translatability. I have had to change the references from "button id
[the id]" to "button [ordinal] of group "myMenubar" in stacks that can
be cloned (plain "button [ordinal]" also resolves to different
controls in the original & cloned stacks).

It seems to me that, ideally, a cloned stack should be identical to
the stack from which it was cloned. If you are expecting this
behavior, be aware it isn't always so.
Thanks for the warning Rob, but as far as translatability goes, don't
forget the label property for buttons. You can have button (or menu)
NAME constant and just change the LABEL to convert to a different
language.

OSX has native support for PDF and can render or export to PDF with a few
lines of code. On other platforms you would need to license a SDK..but when
you need it you need it. We may support displaying PDFs in the future or
printing to PDF on OSX.

You can view PDFs in Windows as well using the acrobat COM component or the
altuit web browser DLL.

If you're talking about printing from a stack, try importing a snapshot of
the current card/stack and then printing. If it works, you can then delete
the snapshot immediately after printing.

Printing Transparent PNG's

2003-12-02 Thread Sannyasin Sivakatirswami
Transparent PNG images in a stack print just fine on our Xante Laser
writer driven by Macs. But the same stack-card printed from an Windows
machine to an Epson Stylus inkjet color printer appears as a black box.

I suspect this is a question of printer drivers and the use of emulated
postscript and not true postscript (for which Epson has been loath to
pay the license fees on all but their top large format printers) But,
hoping I am wrong.. is there a work around short of changing the image
format on the fly to .jpg (and losing the transparency) before
printing? If not, I'll just have to eliminate use of png transparency
for anything that needs printed output

Hoping it's not true...

Re: Trapping for Cancel Answer printer

Well, choosing "Cancel" in a system dialog box would return

"Cancel" is passed to "the result," not "it" for "answer printer"

So, if there is a "general rule" its not that which you propose.

Not sure if you can get at the alignment scripts in Rev, but if not,
alignment scripts are accessible in MetaCard.

On a related note, I've always believed that object alignment is somewhat
non-standard in Rev and MC. In most layout applications, when you align
objects to the left, for example, all objects move to the extreme left of
all selected objects, not the first object selected. (I suppose in an ideal
world it might be good to provide both options for alignment.) I've written
some scripts that deal with object alignment in the above manner. If you
can't track down any of the development environment scripts, let me know.

Cornelia, an OS X a standalone is a "bundle". It's actually a folder
containing special files including a manifest, icons and an executable

You need to make a directory walker. You have to loop trough all the
folders and set the defaultfolder to it, then loop trough these folders
etc. Watch out for the .. directory on macosx and unix systems, it
might trap you in a infinite loop.

for example:
--WARNING script untested
on lookateachfolder thefolder --thefolder is a path
  set the defaultfolder to thefolder
repeat for each line theLine in the folders
if char one of theLine <> "." then
  set the defaultfolder to theLine
--do your file listing here using "the files"
lookateachfolder (the defaultfolder & "/" & theLine) --for
folders in this folder
end if
  end repeat
end lookateachfolder

The app I want to create is simple. It should be able to browse to a

have the .pic extension. E.g. clicking on the "find folder" button in
the schematic below will open the windows browse template and a
colleague can navigate to their folder and by clicking OK it will list
the paths to those files.

eg R:\medical\dave\images
or R:\medical\bobsstuff\
However the folder "images will have 20 folders in it and the .pic
files will be in these. IE. It needs to list all the .pic files in the
sub-folders.

Then clicking on the "put in this folder"; all the files listed will
be copied to the destination folder

It will look like this
##
get image files from this directory

///

//

put in this folder another box

COPY

I checked the help files and can see how to list a files and folders

Hi All,

Yesterday I was surprised to find that the ids & ordinals of the menu
buttons and other controls of a cloned stack were not the same as
those in the stack it was cloned from. (At least not always, if it
seems to work for you, try modifying the order of the controls in the
source stack before cloning it.)

Apparently, if one uses control id references in stack handlers, one
must be sure never to clone the stack.

I reference menu buttons by id rather than name to support
application translatability. I have had to change the references
from "button id [the id]" to "button [ordinal] of group "myMenubar"
in stacks that can be cloned (plain "button [ordinal]" also resolves
to different controls in the original & cloned stacks).

It seems to me that, ideally, a cloned stack should be identical to
the stack from which it was cloned. If you are expecting this
behavior, be aware it isn't always so.

Re: Icons, IDs and Image Library

First, the nice answer: The image's name can be used as the icon
reference!

Of course the one thing that could be also nice to use is the AltID prop
but
it's another missing piece in the Props palette. And you can't use it to
assign
a button an icon - so you wonder why it exists right?

Now regarding confusion between two similar IDs in separate stacks, I'd
avoid it!
It seems that the first loaded ID is the one in use which may not be your
choice...

These would be nice feature requests but since my last 3 concize posts to
bugzilla
went lost, my 2 months-old bugzilla report is still untouched and Kevin
still
doesn't answer an important mail I sent him 2 months ago, I gave up using
Confuzilla...

Anyone else having problems with bugzilla?

Icons, IDs and Image Library

2003-12-02 Thread Graham Samuel
I sent this email just now from the apple 'Mail' client and it
bounced. Possibly some of it got through - if so, apologies for the
partial double posting.

I've been trying to chase a very obscure bug that's something to do
with setting the icon of a button to the ID of an image. During this
(so far unsuccessful) activity, I've found some strange things -
well, strange to me.

1. IDs are unique to a stack, but not unique to a whole stack file
(the same ID can appear in different stacks), but the 'icon' property
of an image is just a number - it can't be qualified by a stack name.
In fact the TD says:

"You can set the ID of an image. Be careful not to set an image ID to
a number that's the ID of another object in the same stack: since
Revolution uses IDs to keep track of objects, a conflict may prevent
Revolution from being able to access one or both objects."

But since you can't choose ID numbers (can you?) the possibility does
exist of the icon property pointing to an unintended image (i.e. one
in a different stack from the one intended). How can I make sure this
doesn't happen? (BTW I think this is a rather sloppy exception to the
normal scope rules, - you can imagine ID refs like 3.1055 meaning "ID
1055 in stack 3", which would be unique - but I guess there must be
at least historical reasons for it).

2. If I set the icon property of a button using the IDE by clicking
on the symbol next to the 'icon' field in the object's inspector, I
then get a window which lists the available icons, including those in
'this stack' - but I now see that although all the images in the
current stack are listed, some of then show **the wrong ID numbers**
in the corresponding tooltip - the only way to find out which ID
you're using. For example, one reported in its tooltip as ID 1043
turns out to have ID 1103 - 1043 was deleted from an earlier version
and is not now assigned. Is this a bug?

3. I guess this is likely my fault, but it appears so far that if I
set the icon of my button to an animated GIF (yes, that old thing!),
for just some GIF IDs the animation doesn't show up, even though the
GIF is merrily animating on its own card (not shown to the user). I'm
not really asking for listers to waste any more time on this, but I
admit I would be interested in any ideas about how I might attack the
problem.

TIA

I have tried compressing and decompressing the whole file as the first
test. I tried compressing the data from a variable as a second test.
I've looked at the same data in a text editor on both platforms and I
did a comparison of charToNum() of the compressed data on both
platforms. This was the exact same problem I had with blowfish I
think.
I solved it by constricting cross-platform data transfers to less than
ascii 127; even though the data can represent up to ascii 255. My
blowfish algorithm does it all as numerical values until the final
rendering. I had to drop binaryEncode() & binaryDecode() in order to
get numerical only results within the process. That's why I think it's
something like upper ascii character values across platforms.
snip

PS In fact with a litle adjustment your Blowfish stack is working on
both platforms

Re: Stacks 'Winking Out' or Hiding Behind BackDrop

2003-12-02 Thread Kathy Jaqua
Re: Stacks 'winking out' or hiding behind backDrop.

I am not sure if this is a bug. To keep the backDrop
present; that is, set to black,
one must keep in mind the message passing order. In
HyperCard-remember the old days-we RESUME to the Card
then the Stack. So try:

In Stack Script:

on openCard
set the backDrop to "Black"
pass openCard
end openCard

on suspend
set the backDrop to none
pass suspend
end suspend

on resume
send "openCard" to this stack in 1 millisecond
pass resume
end resume

I seem to remember that to avoid confusion when
sending an 'on resume' or 'on resumeStack' message
handler we put some 'resume' commands into a
'themOldHandlerBlues' message handler.

This 'themOldHandlerBlues' handler is sent to openCard
'on resume'.

So Try:

on themOldHandlerBlues
set the backDrop to "Black"
end themOldHandlerBlues

on openCard
-- other openCard stuff here
themOldHandlerBlues
pass openCard
end openCard

I just discovered Revolution and find it delightful.

bright spot in my life.

I think this will work in Revolution. (Did I mention

revTools at startUp - again?

2003-12-02 Thread Thomas J McGrath III
Hello everyone, I asked this a few days ago but did not get an answer?

I added a few plugins to REV and now I have the BLUE tool bar show up -
which is ok cause I like the save archives in it - but now the built-in
revTools does not show up at start up.
Where and how can I 'set' the revTools to show up at start up?

Thanks

Tom

The < put binaryDecode("N",str,halfBlock) into numConverted >
in your blowfish handler can produce an unsigned integer on
the Windows platform where as on the Mac a signed integer is
produced. This is probably an engine related problem.
To test this try the following on both platforms and compare:
on mouseUp
  put num2char("169,170,171,172") into x
  ## N - decode signed four-byte integers in network order
  put binaryDecode("N",x,halfBlock1) into numConverted
  ## I - decode unsigned four-byte integers in host order
  put binaryDecode("I",x,halfBlock2) into numConverted
  put halfblock1 && halfblock2
end mouseUp
function num2char sx
repeat for each item i in sx
put numtochar(i) after z
  end repeat
  return z
end num2char

listing files in a directory folder and subfolders and copy

2003-12-02 Thread Bob Hartley
Hi all

I am new to revolution. I have been impressed by the demo and after 5 days
decided to buy it. :-

I'm creating an app for our office to copy files from one directory to
another. "I" normally use total commander for this on windows, but my
colleagues are still insistent on explorer. Doh

The app I want to create is simple. It should be able to browse to a
directory folder and list all files in the folder and subfolders that have
the .pic extension. E.g. clicking on the "find folder" button in the
schematic below will open the windows browse template and a colleague can
navigate to their folder and by clicking OK it will list the paths to those
files.

eg R:\medical\dave\images
or R:\medical\bobsstuff\
However the folder "images will have 20 folders in it and the .pic files
will be in these. IE. It needs to list all the .pic files in the sub-folders.

Then clicking on the "put in this folder"; all the files listed will be
copied to the destination folder

It will look like this
##
get image files from this directory

///
find folder this is a box
//

put in this folder another box

COPY
///
I checked the help files and can see how to list a files and folders in one
directory. OK so far but to list all in the subfolders is not clear to me.

Thanks for the help and bearing with a newbie.

Cheers
Bob

I would second that. Actually PDF isn't that complex : once you get the
basic rules (especially for file format) you're up and going. The main
problem, for coders used to transcript, is probably the lack of "readability".
But if you're used to code in PostScript (or any language with the same
structure), then it's a breeze...

As for developping a general library for PDF export, it also crossed my
mind a few times...
BTW, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I vaguely recall reading
somewhere (long time ago) that developping an app that can read PDF
files is OK, but OTOH developping an app that generates PDF files
requires to purchase a license from Adobe...
Does this rule still apply ? And, if yes, would a PDF export lib for Rev
require a license ?

Best,
JB
