Re: Losing the amateur
There are two sentiments bouncing around here - one of a personal ownership of the 'revolution', snip The other group, fondly referred to here as the profit motive group, sees this all as a software tool whose purpose is to enable one to generate income. snip Some of those here have a foot in both camps, as does the company. snip Hi John, Like others, I thought this was an exceptionally well balanced exposition of the current situation. I just wanted to say a few things myself. First off, this is a great community. No, a Really Great community. You, the users, and especially the users who contributor so freely to this list, are a vital part of the Revolution. I know I'm speaking for everyone in the company when I say we recognise the debt we owe you all. It's a partnership, always has been a partnership, and will continue to be a partnership, even though we're growing so fast that sadly I no longer know all or even most of our users by name... It's inevitable that as Revolution grows, we become less seat of the pants and more corporate. However, this has to be a Good Thing. We will have better systems, more staff, faster response times and an end to problems such as the horrendously delayed manual printing (yes, they really are coming, no, they aren't mythical, and yes, I'm very sorry for the incredible delays). Everyone should experience a consistently better level of overall service. Whenever we make big changes, to licensing or support, or interface or whatever, we try very hard to support our existing loyal customer base. We listen to feedback, and though we cannot always give everyone everything they want (especially as this is often contradictory ;)) we pay attention and make the best choices we can in the interests of the most people we can. One thing that is in everyone's interest, is that the Revolution thrives. I'm genuinely happy to say that the future has never looked brighter. We've a great, enthusastic team, a great user base, and a great future. Onward! Heather Taking off customer services manager hat and examining it, then putting it on again. It seems to fit... Welcome back!
Greetings again, list members! Great to see you all again. My sincere apologies for not having warned you all that the lists were about to go down - they went offline a day earlier than scheduled and my message informing you never got through. The good news is the server upgrade includes some great new upgrades to the list software. Among them is the option to obscure email addresses when they are presented on list web pages, even when in the text of the message. This is turned on, and I wait with interest to see the effect. During the transfer it is possible that some of your list settings may have become unset or altered. You may want to go and check your settings and make sure everything is to your liking. You can do this here: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution You have all been assigned new passwords. To obtain your password, enter your subscribed email address in the box at the bottom of the page and click on unsubscribe or edit options. If you have any problems you know my address :) If you get an authentication failed message when you try to access the web interface, (and you've checked and re-entered your password), wait an hour or so and try again - it takes a little while for the new server address to propagate around the world, your ISP may not have received it yet. If you sent a message to the list between Thursday 9th October and today, Friday 17th of October, I regret it must be recorded as missing in action. Please send again (unless it was to ask what had happened to the lists...) The bug database is still offline. This should be back up on Monday, and its return to service will complete the entire operation. Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience, but the server upgrade has been well worthwhile, and is part of a far reaching program of improvements we're putting in place to make our services to you the best we possibly can. Re: Release Candidate 1 Available -- Special Offers End Soon
I don't think we have any plans to withdraw this offer in the short or medium term, but in the long term obviously, we are likely to stop supporting the subscription model in favour of the new licensing. You should be pretty safe to wait until December, but if we do have any plans to discontinue the subscription renewals, we will certainly tell everybody and give you a last chance to renew. Hmm, now this is confusing. You say that your new licensing model is not subscriptions?! What is the difference? Are we now required to maintain valid license at all times? So far, we were allowed to renew even if it was expired. Maybe I'm using confusing terminology. What I mean by the subscription model is the kind of licensing system we've had where you buy a license for a year, and get all upgrades free during that year (and before anybody asks, no, that doesn't mean your Revolution will stop working after a year, it just means you don't get any more free upgrades). Enterprise still works that way: buy an Enterprise license or renewal and it includes all upgrades for a year. However, Studio and Express are now single version licenses. You buy a license for the shipping version of Revolution only, and purchase further upgrades as and when you need them. Actually, to be strictly accurate, you get one free upgrade with Studio, and then you have to start paying for them. Express gives you no upgrades at all. We are maintaining the subscription model for the moment, for existing customers only, who hold licenses to 2.0.1 or earlier. The question of renewal after expiry is a different issue. To date we have never required that you maintain your license at all times, and I can't see us doing that. We'd prefer you to renew within a reasonable time interval of course... Re: General license questions
I have some general license questions. I hope it is OK to ask general questions here as others might elaborate on the questions, supply interpretations and also appreciate answers. Seems reasonable to me. 1. The new license table has a Create applications for column. I assume that means standalones and all licenses can build stacks for all platforms. Is that correct? Yes it means standalones, but no, Express can't build for all platforms. It only builds applications for the platform you license it for. Other licenses all build for all platforms. 2. I assume that WIN32 for the time being is one platform. Is that correct? Yes. 3. Are printed manuals included in Enterprise renewals? No, renewal doesn't include manuals. What do we need to do to make sure that works right? Well, you shouldn't have to do anything, since I will have your record, look up when you expire (er, I mean your license, goodness, don't want any valuable customers expiring) and generate your new license to run from the end of the old one. If you want to be doubly sure I don't miss the fact that you still have time on your old license, drop me an email when you order. If you want to switch to the new licensing, you can buy a new discounted license, but you will not then be able to switch back to the old model. I am a little confused, too. I received an email from support that my license was converted to Commercial Enterprise back on July 29. It also said, ...you are still bound by your previous license agreement. On the licensing page in the License Renewals table is this row: SBE - existing customers only | none | Renewal | $299 Does your statement above mean that Pro people can take advantage of that? Or is that an error? Is there a time limit on that? What do I miss besides support if I take the $299 option instead of the $399 renewal? Basically, I need to upgrade that page... The situation is this: Current Small Business Edition license holders can continue to renew on the old model, for $299, and get a modified Studio license that can author and build cross platform. They don't get the same database privileges as Enterprise users though. They continue to get upgrades for a year. OR they can switch to a pay per release model and buy a $49 upgrade to Studio. If they do this however, they can't go back to the subscription model. Current Professional license holders can also continue with the subscription model, for $299. For this they get an Enterprise level renewal, with full database access, but no support. They also have the option to buy an Enterprise renewal at $399, which includes 5 support incidents. Graham: I'm ashamed to say I still don't really understand this. I have now read the descriptions on the 'Revolution Editions' page and I am still a bit fuzzy. Personally, I need to maintain the multiplatform development and deployment option as long as I can afford it. Can I just wait till December (my normal renewal date) to optimise my cash flow, and still pay $299 to renew at Enterprise level (minus tech support) or is this offer likely to be withdrawn? I don't think we have any plans to withdraw this offer in the short or medium term, but in the long term obviously, we are likely to stop supporting the subscription model in favour of the new licensing. You should be pretty safe to wait until December, but if we do have any plans to discontinue the subscription renewals, we will certainly tell everybody and give you a last chance to renew. When I do renew, how can I get back onto a higher tech support level, supposing I'd want to? I see that Enterprise users get more tech support (10 incidents) in the first year than in subsequent years (5 incidents). So we have people with Enterprise-level licences potentially with 3 different levels of support. Well, you could choose the $399 option and get 5 technical support incidents. Or you could buy a support package, a full description of what we offer is available here: http://www.runrev.com/Revolution1/support.html BTW in the 'Online Store' part of the RunRev web site (where I first looked for a definition of the different Editions), none of the terms such as 'Enterprise', 'Studio' etc are mentioned, although one can get at them indirectly via the Store Front, as suggested in the Store page. IMHO this could confuse new potential purchasers. Point taken. I'll try and address it soon. I hope my above statements go some way to clarifying the position. If not, please ask again... Using strong language on the lists
Dear listees, Please don't. Not just because it may cause offence and because I personally prefer a more moderate tone. It is a simple fact that using such language actually prevents not only your message, but the entire digest in which it appears, from reaching a number of list members. Whether you agree with it or not, whether you think it a symptom of a nanny state or heartily endorse such policies, many universities for example, have spam filtering in place which will bounce the entire list if certain words appear in it. I know, because these bounces end up in my inbox and add to my already extensive email backlog. So please, if you feel strongly about an issue, be creative. Use interesting adjectives. Consider the wording that will get your message across most effectively. Let your email simmer overnight. And don't use the kind of language that will get this list marked as potential porn. Dear folks, There is a new engine available for the current 2.1 beta on Windows only which fixes a problem with importing snapshots and backdrops. Plain text only please!
Just a reminder, and information for new list members. Please, if possible, only post in plain text, turn off your html formatting before posting to the list. It comes through as garbage for digest listees, wastes bandwith, and annoys the multitudes. And we don¹t want that do we? If you need help to do this, search the archives for lots of good information. Note that I did say if possible. There are a few circumstances where members simply can't post in plain text, and we don¹t want to lose your valuable contributions. But if you can turn off html, please do. Re: Proposal - the use-revolution list

A mailing list comes to you and demands your attention. A message board sits there lurking 24/7, but unless you bother to check it, it generally won't remind you. This is my problem with a forum/message board/newsgroup. The list comes directly to my inbox and I can easily scan through the new items, discarding the threads that don't interest me and reading those that do. Most of the emails come during the Australian night, so I don't even have to wait for them to download :-) If I had to log in to a web site and click my way painfully through a series of links, I wouldn't read most of them and therefore would be in no position to respond. So please, whatever else is set up in parallel, don't drop the list! Just a note to say that we have no intention of dropping the list. This model works well for a large number of people. What, if anything, we set up in parallel, is open to debate. It's certainly possible that at some time in the future we will add a web forum. Re: Ressource unavailable (CGI capabilities)
Hi Erik, [EMAIL PROTECTED] is there for your general problems, andmy guess is that one person goes through these mails as they come in, and forwards them to the appropriate person. That is where installer problems and the 10-incidents package calls go to. [EMAIL PROTECTED] is there when we need to specifically talk to the listmom, webmistress or customer-relations-lady. So if you know you need her for a specific item, mail Heather directly, otherwise email support. At least that's my conclusion ;-) Thanks Jan! just to add a little to that, I deal with licensing issues also. If your support query is about licensing, it's going to end up in my inbox sooner or later. Other than that, couldn't have said it better myself. By the way the poster who thinks it is inexcusable ( namely me ) has a name. ; ) In fact I had not yet received my unlock code. The point I was trying to make was that the information concerning what old license category would be replaced with which new category and at what price has not been forthcoming. Or has everyone else received that information by divine absorption as well. If Rev were the only tool required to do my job I guess I wouldn't give a flip. Truth is I need to stay within a fixed budget in order to be able to upgrade all the tools I require as well as perhaps new hardware. I don't appreciate being kept in the dark on this matter, makes for budget problems that I don't need. Gentlemen. I appreciate there is always room for improvement in the way we handle things. I'm sorry some of you are less than happy with the situation. Some of the blame for this rests with me, rather than Runtime collectively. I have missed some work due to personal issues, in addition to attending MacWorld, and this means many of you have not received individual responses yet regarding the new pricing policies. My backlog has reached monumental proportions, and however hard I try, I simply cannot answer 1000 emails in one day. We do care very much about our existing customers, and greatly appreciate the patience you have shown. If you have not yet received your new unlock code for 2.0.2, and you think you should have, I suggest that in order for me to fasttrack these enquires, you email me (again if you have already done so previously) with the subject line Missing New Unlock Code in the title of the email. Fix to distribution builder available
Dear listees, We have uploaded a fix to the 2.0.2 distribution builder, here: http://www.runrev.com/revolution/downloads/distributions/2.0/updates/ Please download this, unzip it, and place it in your components/tools directory inside Revolution. This will substantially enhance your ability to build standalones for OSX... It should also fix a few other issues with this release, such as unwanted personal preferences. Apologies for the inconvenience. We intend to use this directory in the future for patches and fixes, so it's worth bookmarking it and checking there periodically between releases, to see if we have uploaded anything for your comfort and convenience. Re: 4 and a bit mice......missing the point
what we need is an article that siezes one by the cough-cough-coughs and makes us really inspired. The MacUser review does not do that. It should be realised by Software reviewers that computers are no longer wierd, arcane machines that are tended by alchemists in pointy hats with 25 diplomas in funny computer languages: but tools that can, and should, be used by anybody with a drop of creativity in their bones to express themselves in a multitude of ways. :-) Welcome to the Revolution. Your enthusiasm is a warming thing. How about you try your hand at writing an article or some letters on Revolution and send them in to some magazines? And you could do some reviews on Versiontracker and Download.com if you feel like it. Wow; got a bit carried away there - but some of us do feel passion for software that allows us to go all artistic and try to dxrag some our sense of wonder screaming into the real world. Please, feel free. It's good to get inspired from time to time, in between hammering out kinks in the code. Re: Yikes! E-mail harvesting possibility?
Greetings! If I can snip and match a few different posts on this issue: Might want to check out The Mail Archive, a free archiving service used by some other listservs I subscribe to. It obfuscates any embedded emails, whether in signatures or in headers or in the text of the emails. Not sure how they manage this, but it's a great way of making the list archives pubicly available and still protected. Thanks Mark, I'll look into it. It is perfectly reasonable to communicate with individuals via the list. If the RR list moderators could remove e-mail addresses from the digests I belive they would do us all a favour. Perhaps, but sometimes on-list conversations become off-list ones, and in order for someone to email someone off-list, they need to know what the person's email address is. If there is a direct connection between the email addresses on the list and an increase in spam, I'd agree with you, but until that is proven, I think it is beneficial to have the email addresses in the digest. The consensus on that very quickly became clear. The benefit of having non anonymous posts far outweighs the spam risk for most people. Apart from the harvesting aspect there is the simple fact that the e-mail digests contain all the e-mail addresses of the contributors. So far I have not been able to identify any of the piles of SPAM I seem to get as originating from somebody having subscribed to the e-mail digest - but any SPAMMER must be incredibly stupid if they don't see this possibility. Yes, but to take advantage of these email addresses, the would be spammer first has to subscribe to the list. That's why this is a double opt in list. It protects you from the vast majority of spammers, because they are robots, not people. Spam is a problem. I say this as one who gets vast quantities of the stuff every day. But to let it diminish the value of our legitimate activities is to let it win! Spam filters, the delete button, and a philosophical attitude are my current preferred weapons in the war against spam. I think for the moment, if the spam risk really worries you, you should mung your email address in some way so that it won't get quoted in usable form. We will continue to look at other possible solutions that don't diminish the value of the list. Regards, Heather -- Heather Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.runrev.com/ Runtime Revolution Ltd. To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sun, 08 Jun 2003 09:17:14 -0400 Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I still have this hangup about certain aspects of the RR 1.1.1 GUI that I prefer over that of RR 2. However it does not seem possible to replace some of the RR 2 components with those from RR 1.1.1 to allow the RR 1.1.1 GUI to be used with RR 2 under the hood. This especially refers to the property inspector (frankly the RR 1.1.1 seems to involve fewer mouseclicks). Does anybody have any bright ideas on the feasibility of this...? Revolution Birthday Present
Dear list members, Revolution's anniversary is fast approaching. To mark the occasion, and celebrate the arrival of 2.0, we'd like to show our appreciation of this great community. This list and the people on it are a great resource for all Revolutionaries. I hereby institute the annual Revolution listee of the year award. This award will consist of a bottle of whisky, and will be awarded to the person voted by the list members as having been the most consistently helpful member of the list over the previous year. You all have one vote, which you may award entirely at your own discretion, and by your own parameters as to what constitutes helpful. Your vote must be sent to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED], personally. Any votes sent to any other address or to the list will not be counted. You must put the name of your candidate in the subject line of your email. I think it has to do with either a removable drive or a pending CD-write to a XP folder (do you have a CD-RW?). This is what worked for me: Reboot the machine and see if you still get it (after removing all CD's). If that doesn't work, reboot the machine, uninstall RR2.0 (and any other version of 2.0 beta) and reinstall. That should do the trick. Also, and maybe quicker, if you don't need to use the CD drive... I'm told just putting a blank CD in the drive keeps Revolution sane and content... Re: mpossible to save
What is this ' ~ backup file', and where is it? -- I still think it expects you to open a backup copy of your stack, but it needs to be in the right path for 2.0 to find it, and apparently isn't. Revolution attaches a ~ to files it has had problems saving to. What happens then is that it reverts to the last clean save it made, and attachs a ~ to the problem stack. So remove the ~, and it should open again. You may have lost a few very recent changes. But Ken is totally correct also, in that it is good practice, always, in any programming environment or indeed in any program you create work in, to make frequent backups. re: Math question: How to compute the area of polygons
One more solution for you all to consider. Tomas had some posting troubles so he asked me to post this for him. From: Tomas Nally, P.E. on behalf of Tomas Nally, P.E. Sent: Tue 3/18/2003 9:10 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Subject: Math question: How to compute the area of polygons Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 10:06:57 +0100 Subject: Math question: How to compute the area of polygons From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Malte Brill) Hi List, this one goes out to the math experts. How does one compute the area ( I hope it is the correct Term for flaecheninhalt in german) of a polygon with n sides. Not a math expert here, but finding the areas of irregular polygons was the one of the first things that I did with my very own computer (a Commodore-64) when I bought it in 1985. (Actually, I wasn't finding the area of polygons, per se. I was performing numerical integration to see how close the result would be to the answer when traditional calculus is used. But that operation is almost identical to finding the area of a polygon.) I'm not too much of a Transcripter, so let me give a BASIC version, from which a transcript version could be generated. -- First, make sure that the x- and y-coordinates of the polygon -- are stored in an array. Also, the array members should identify -- the points of the polygon as you trace the polygon CLOCKWISE -- around it's perimeter. In BASIC, this is how arrays are -- dimensioned. dim x(100) dim y(100) -- Additionally, each differential element of the polygon will have -- its own differential area, so we need an array for that also. dim trapArea(100) -- Identify the number of nodes of the polygon. (Or, you might -- just as well call them vertices, or points.) n = 20 -- Just an example, here. -- Now, going clockwise around the perimeter of the polygon, -- find the area of the virtual trapezoid under each line segment. -- A line segment is defined as the segment connecting -- the ith node and the (i + 1)th node. Do this inside a -- counted loop. In BASIC, a convenient loop for this is -- the For...Next loop. for i = 1 to (n - 1) -- note that I'm stopping at (n - 1) x1 = x(i) y1 = y(i) x2 = x(i + 1) y2 = y(i + 1) trapArea(i) = y1 * (x2 - x1) + (1/2) * (x2 - x1) * (y2 - y1) next i -- This doesn't quite close the loop around the perimeter -- of the polygon. In order to close the loop, we need to -- find the area under the line segment between the nth -- node and the very first node. x1 = x(n) y1 = y(n) x2 = x(1) y2 = y(1) trapArea(n) = y1 * (x2 - x1) + (1/2) * (x2 - x1) * (y2 - y1) -- Now, we have to add up all the areas of the elements TotalArea = 0 for i = 1 to n TotalArea = TotalArea + trapArea(i) next i -- When I've discussed this elsewhere, there's usually -- some skepticism about whether it works. The reason -- it works is because when the (i + 1)th node is on the -- right-hand side of the ith node, then trapArea(i) has -- a positive value. However, as you traverse around -- the perimeter of the polygon, when the (i + 1)th node -- is on the left-hand side of the ith node, then the -- value of trapArea(i) is negative. When you add all -- of these positive and negative areas, then the result -- is the area on the interior of the polygon. -- Heather Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.runrev.com/ Runtime Revolution Ltd. Re: T-shirt design competition
i am all excited with this competition, and i do have one question. RunRev folks will sell thru cafepress so we'll be able to buy from shirts to drinkwear. drinkwear design space is much smaller than shirts design space, so can we enter the contest with specific entries like: andre garzia entrie for clock.png andre garzia entrie for tshirt.png Sure. But I think we need to keep the designs themed and clearly related. So it might be best to offer a series of designs in different sizes perhaps, but as one submission. So maybe you could submit one large design and one related small design, together. Or one design only that can be scaled. Entirely up to your judgment. it would give us more power (power to the designe!!!) to create and the end product will be better, we'll not think hell this stamp would be better big on a tshirt and not this small on a clock that of course leads to contest winner problems since there are different categories, and i think RunRev will not give that many licenses, but it still be good to have specific desings... I think the problem with offering separate categories is more that we wouldn't want to use two widely different designs. So there will remain one winner, one prize, and one category, but we will be more than happy to see you submit two related designs. From: Toma Tasovac [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I know that it is not politically correct to whine about the delay of 2.0 on this list, since complaints are usually bombarded with the wise and ethically superior they're working so hard, give them a break and we want a good product, we're ready to wait... kind of answers -- but the Revolution Website claims that their development process is better advanced now, allowing us to make a more accurate estimate than previously and that they will be shipping a public beta of 2.0 in mid January. Sending attachments to the list
Please don't do it! Even if your attachment is very small, hardly noticeable etc... It will come over as gibberish on the digest. Many, many listers are on digest mode, and your gem will be lost on them, as well as causing a certain amount of annoyance. Besides, in these days of rampant viruses sending an unexpected attachment to people can cause distress. Another small point while I'm here. To reach the widest audience, it's advisable to avoid using strong language in your posts. Recently, someone quoted the famous remark about HyperCard's imminent demise... And a number of listers did not receive that digest as it was filtered out on the recipients end by ever vigilant anti spam software that took offence at the language. (I know, I get the bounces). Either things are really slow or else there's a problem. Any response? Best regards, Ken N. We are having a small problem at the moment. A smallish percentage of our users are being affected by an incorrect blacklisting of our IP address by SPEWS, an anti spam organisation. Apparently, this organisation takes it upon itself to blacklist not only IP addresses that are sending spam, but also all neighbouring, innocent IP addresses, and in some cases entire ISP's. A number of reputable ISP's then use this blacklist to block all email from those addresses. Your ISP is probably one of them. Unfortunately, SPEWS is uncontactable, unresponsive, and as far as I can tell, actively does not want to remove innocent businesses from their blacklisting, since it relies on us to complain to our ISP's and get the spam operations shut down. We are attempting to do this. How long it will take and how successful we will be, I do not know. In the meantime, all I can suggest is that you contact me directly if you have specific enquiries about Revolution, and I can respond through my backup email address. Re: General Lists vs Special Lists
I trust in Heather to keep this from becoming a General List. Why, thank you Rob. Actually, it's the good folks on the list who make it what it is. The amount of cheerful, friendly, incredibly erudite advice that gets dispensed round here never ceases to astound me. Personally, I enjoy the occasional off topic thread - though the operational word there is occasional - as I think do most folk. When people start getting irritated is when to stop however. As, I think, we all know. I give fair warning to Erik, miscdas, and anyone else who wants to make this into a Special List: I will fight you every step of the way. Rob, if I thought you were planning to start posting regularly on politics, artwork and the state of the nation, those words would alarm me... Since we all have seen and benefited from your regular, excellent, on topic postings, I think I should be safe to leave it entirely up to your own good judgement. A little bit of sugar now and then helps the coding go better. Can I just slip in a reminder here about html formatting? Please, plain text only for your postings, turn off all that fancy formatting before you hit send. It's very indigestible for those folks who don't get single messages. List Etiquette
Hi folks, I see it is time once again for me to raise my head and remind all you good people of a few things that help to make this list run smoothly and remain the great resource that it is for all. I've been noticing rather a lot of html garbage on the list lately. I remind you that to the majority of users of the list, fancy formatting comes over as unnecessary garbage which is almost unreadable. The digest can *only* cope with plain text. Please turn off html formatting in your email client before posting. Please, No Attachments! Again, they arrive as garbage, clutter up the list, and in the majority of cases will be filtered out by the list software anyway. A small one slipped through I see... If you have something you want to share with list members, please post a url where they can go and look at it, or send it privately. Remember to change the header if you are in digest mode, so that it reflects something more useful than Re: use-revolution digest no 6003. Please do snip your posts so that you are only quoting enough for people to understand what you are replying too. Six layers of nested quoting in pretty colours may look pretty, but it is almost never necessary and adds to the bandwith burden for those of us still on dialup pay-per-minute connections. All subscribe/unsubscribe requests should be sent directly to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED], if you were unable to resolve them by visiting the list webpage. I'm always happy to help. Most such requests sent to the list will be automatically filtered out by the list software, unless you can't spell unsubscribe... To protect you from spam this list is a double opt in list. This means, that if you post from an address you are not subscribed with, your post will be held for approval by the list moderator - that's me, folks. If this happens, don't panic, I'll get in there and approve it asap, once I've checked it's not spam. You can avoid this happening however, by subscribing all email addresses you are likely to post from, and setting all but one to nomail so that you don't get duplicate posts. And finally, I would like to say thank you once again to everyone who contributes to this great community. It was lovely meeting some of you at Paris Expo. Onward and Upward! Subject heading prefix
Ladies and Gentlemen. Clearly I cannot please everyone on this delicate subject, a prefix is either there or it isn't. However, surely a couple of letters, say, RRU to designate use rev and RRI to designate improve rev wouldn't be too ugly to tolerate? Would it actually break anything? Could add the desired functionality for those that wish, and hardly obscure much of the subject heading for those that don't need it. You can still colour it pink if you like... Shipping to Switzerland is even more, USD 55, from UK (while actual shipping cost isn o more than around USD10). Switzerland is still in Europe. No, shipping to Switzerland is rated at $35. We count it as part of Europe, even if not part of the EU. However, all this is rather a moot point at the moment. I have sold out of manuals. How much interest is there still in purchasing manuals from the people on this list? We need to assess whether there is sufficient demand for a reprint. The price will go up to $99 (since a smaller number of books would be printed, costing us proportionately more). Please, please, do not respond to the list. Hi all, Just a note to remind you. If you haven't already ordered your copy of the Revolution printed manuals, better do so soon. The $79 offer finishes at the end of the month. Re: revolution on basilisk II - Attn list admin
Dear list admin: Is it possible to prevent the inconsiderate members of the list from posting the additional HTML version of their important message? Either that or block all their posts? I'm on digest mode. I do send out reminders on this from time to time... Sent one quite recently. I can't block posts that have html added. You should bear in mind that it is easy to do accidentally and forget that you have the html settings on, especially as if you post in that format you usually can read it too without it becoming garbage. However, on the digest it always comes out garbled, and causes annoyance. So if we could all be a little careful... Re: Manual announcement
I tried to place an order today for the manuals and was informed that a $25.00 was to be charged for delivery and a sales tax ??? Of $13.82 was to be added. This is for an address at Southampton UK. I expected the total charge to be $79.00 as per your email. Can you please confirm this? Richard Collins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sorry about the tax, the store should no longer be adding tax to your orders. If it does, email me and I'll take it off before processing. Regarding the postage... There is a typo (wouldn't you know) in the original announcement. Should read Excluding postage round the world... :( Sorry, but we do have to charge this. It's a substantial cost we cannot absorb in the price of the manuals. We did consider fixing a price that included postage, but this would have been unfair to those living closer, in the EU and UK, who would have been subsidising postage to the US and further flung regions. So there is an option to select the correct postage for your area in the online store. If anyone has any problems ordering, or any further questions about the pricing, tax, shipping, etc, of manuals, can you address them to my mailbox? Manual announcement
Dear all, I am happy to announce that at last, finally, the long awaited printed documentation for Revolution is AVAILABLE TO ORDER!! You can go to our online ordering pages at http://www.runrev.com/ and place your order for a full set of Revolution manuals, comprising the Transcript Dictionary in two volumes (yes, there really is that much of it) and the User Guide, a substantial volume in its own right. The total cost is $99, for all three volumes, *including* postage and packing to anywhere in the world. For a limited period until the end of June, we are offering a $20 discount on that price. So don't delay, get on over to our website and place your order now. Stocks are limited, first come first served. Need I remind you of the excellence and clarity of Jeanne DeVoto's meticulous documentation? Not forgetting the valuable contributions from Raymond Griffith, Kevin Miller and Tuviah Snyder. For anyone using Revolution, these books are a must have. You should allow up to 28 days for delivery, although I would expect orders to most corners of the globe to arrive well before that. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are a Professional license holder, or have a full Educational license (not a student license), you need do nothing. Your manuals are included in the license, and will be shipped to you asap. Regards, Heather -- Heather Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.runrev.com/ Runtime Revolution Ltd. Manuals and Professional licensing
Greetings. I observe there is some confusion over which Professional licenses qualify for free manuals. My fault, I should have made the original announcement clearer. Only full price $995 Pro licenses have the printed manuals included. If you recall, manuals were specifically excluded from the HyperCard/SuperCard crossgrade deal. Full price $497.50 Educational licenses also qualify. I see there are some other questions also arising. These manuals, as promised, are a printed version of the online documentation. The price is $79. This does not include shipping, which is charged at a variable rate depending on where you are in the world. We are charging this at cost. There is no vat payable on the manuals, books are zero rated in the UK. If you have problems ordering, please feel free to contact me direct. A general list motherly post
Hi folks, Time to make another appearance I think. I note the recent discussion about Spam, Viruses and this list. For your information, the only way to use this list for the purpose of distributing spam is to become a member. This is a double opt in list, meaning any potential spammer has to give a valid email address and confirm their subscription before being accepted as as member. Most spammers do not do this :-). In fact, to my certain knowledge, there has been no instance of spam being sent to this list and getting through the moderation procedure. The members email list is not publicly available, and the archives have your email stripped from the headers. I do not think this list is being used to harvest email addresses or add to your spam burden. However, the nefarious Klez virus is very active at the moment, and as another member has noted, is capable of making it appear as though spam is originating from somewhere it is not. Since I'm here, I'll just run through some of the things we like to see, to keep this list friendly and helpful to all. Please send posts in plain text only, no html or fancy formatting. It gets scrambled for the majority of readers, who are on digest mode, wastes bandwidth, and annoys our European friends who pay per minute on dial up connections. Do not send administrative requests such as subscribe, unsubscribe, or help, I've lost my password, to the list. Most will be filtered out automatically, they only get through if you misspell them. If you have a problem, first check that you can't do what you want by going to the online webpage at http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution Then email me, [EMAIL PROTECTED], or use the admin address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll be happy to help. If you post to the list from an email address other than that you are subscribed with, your post will be held for moderation. No panic, I'll get in there and check it's not spam, then approve it, usually quite quickly. But to avoid this, you may like to know that you can subscribe more than one email address, and set any extra addresses to nomail so that you don't receive duplicate posts. Although the members of this list are generally quite disciplined about this, it's worth repeating that it's not always necessary to quote everything in the thread you are replying to. Rows of indented quotes in pink, orange and blue are pretty, but generally unnecessary, and again waste bandwidth. Be selective and only quote enough for readers to understand and remember what you are replying to. If you get the digest, do try and remember to change the header of your post from Re: digest no 3670 to something more meaningful. Everyone forgets this once in a while, it's not a hanging offence, but it helps if you try and remember to do this, so that other members can follow a thread. And finally, remember it's very hard to judge tone of voice in an email. Flame wars can start from what was intended to be an innocent comment. By and large the members of this list are great, polite, helpful people with a fantastic attitude to helping each other. It's lovely to see, let's keep it that way. Don't forget the smileys :-) Regards, Heather -- Heather Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.runrev.com/ Runtime Revolution Ltd. Re: Billing for upgrade?
Dear Heather, I'm not sure if you're the one I should be writing to about this; if not, could you pass it on to the right person? I bought a professional license for Rev 1.1 last fall at the $199 offer price. Recently I downloaded the upgraded to 1.1.1, which I thought was a free upgrade for licensed users. I just received my latest credit card statement and found I've been charged a second $199. My perusal of the license agreement doesn't make it particularly clear to me what is intended, but my experience elsewhere is that bug-fix upgrades are typically free to licensed users. Could you please clarify this for me? Thank you! And by the way, Revolution is a terrific product. Hi Stuart, Yes, I am the right person, but all such licensing issues should be dealt with off list... For the record, you haven't been charged for the upgrade, it's a mix up. I'll write you off list. Re: Revolution book
Hi, I have been using RR daily now for months. I continue to be happy with its capabilities. The only thing that remains an issue for me is the lack of printed documentation and / or third party books on the subject. It is clear that there are additional sources of information because many of the contributors to these lists seem to be extremely knowledgeable about transcript and RR in general. Where did these folks get this information? Was it working w MetaCard? Is there some printed documentation available for Metacard? Don't get me wrong. I'm not angry about this, just frustrated. Does anybody know if there is there a book in the works. What we really need is a book similar to Danny Goodman's Complete HyperCard Handbook. That type of book could make learning the intricacies of Transcript and Run Rev a lot easier than randomly accessing the online help app or going to the lists. A printed version of the existing documentation is in the works. I am working on getting it available as fast as possible, however this could still be several weeks. As soon as it is available I will announce it on this list, as well as the website. We are well aware of the need for this book, and apologise for the long delay in making it available. I would ask for your patience for just a few weeks longer. Regards, Heather Just my 2¢. Steve -- Heather Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.runrev.com/ Runtime Revolution Ltd. Plain text posts please
Dear all, Given the numbers of new users we have on these lists now, I thought it might not be a bad plan to make a list motherly type post. Some simple guidelines to make this list a friendly, easy to read place for all. You don't always need to quote every post in the thread you are replying to. This is becoming a pretty high traffic list, so to keep the length of the digest down, consider whether you really need to quote three pages of prettily coloured nested text showing all the posts back to the week before last in relation to the question. If you quote the entire digest, along with a request to unsubscribe, I will unsubscribe you promptly, but I will mutter unpleasant things under my breath. Most such requests are automatically screened out by the list software anyway, the proper way to unsubscribe is to use the webpage link, http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo or send me a request for help to the *admin* address at the head of every digest. [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you get the list in digest form and just hit reply, do try and change the subject line to something relevant. People find it hard to follow a thread that becomes mislabeled as Re: digest no 6798 Please send your messages as plain text only. You should be aware that a high proportion of members are on digest mode, and if you send your post as html or other strange formatting you will be inflicting this type of gibberish on a large number of readers (I picked a sample at random): --=_NextPart_000_00F1_01C1BBAA.4A5392B0 Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN HTMLHEAD META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3Dtext/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1 META content=3DMSHTML 6.00.2713.1100 name=3DGENERATOR STYLE/STYLE /HEAD BODY bgColor=3D#ff DIV DIVAwesome find, MisterX!
