What is going to happen with the conference that was once scheduled? (At this

Re: Interesting discussion on iPad content

FWIW, this amateur (OK, near amateur) finally bit the bullet on RevMobile when
I got a special offer that dropped the price to something like $550 because I
REALLY want to be able to develop for the iPad.

OTOH, my subscription to Rev Enterprise is paid up until 2016 or so and I
bought into On-Rev Founder, so I'm hardly a tight wad when it comes to buying
Rev products. That said, even I agree that the current _list_ price for
RevMobile is prohibitive for anyone who does not already have a product ready
to be deployed on the iPad.

Not sure what the answer is, just making an observation

2010-02-25 Thread Marian Petrides
Excuse me? How can RR be perceived as behaving responsibly, when we get
non-responses from queries about shipping status, when it takes more than 6
months for the DVDs to arrive and when there are such disparities (MORE THAN A
MONTH) in shipping. Even if you sub-contract out a part of production of an
item, you are still responsible for the behavior of the people you hired and it
is YOU who are answerable to the customer.

People on this list have been MORE THAN PATIENT waiting, waiting, waiting,
patiently, quietly. There comes a time when you have to exercise the only
recourse available to you--public protest. RunRev should not be surprised at
the level of annoyance expressed here. The only thing that they should be
surprised about is that people waited this long before "pitching a hissy fit,"
as they say in the American South.

We've cut RunRev a LOT of slack on this issue (this time AND last time--with
the '08 Conference DVDs). It's time they made good on their promises--instead
of making even more empty promises.

Exactly my point, Richmond. That's why I passed up on the deal. And I didn't
even get the chance to avail myself of the simulcast (or to attend the
conference itself) because of time constraints. The ONLY benefit I will get out
of what I paid will be when (if?) I get the DVDs.

Not a happy camper. And I wrote to support 3 weeks ago (X2 before I got any
response) and then yesterday (was told the shipper CLAIMS to have shipped mine
no later than 10 days ago--yeah, sure).

As I said in my earlier post, at this point, RunRev should find out who has NOT
yet received a copy and immediately express them a set OR refund their money.

Re: Conference-DVDs arrived

2010-02-25 Thread Marian Petrides
Apologies are nice, but getting the DVDs is much better. What does RunRev plan
to do for those of us that have NOT yet gotten our DVDs? For me, the only
options I would consider acceptable at this late date would be either direct
shipment by express carrier or refund of my money.

I realize the problem is with the company you chose to fulfill orders. But YOU
(RunRev) chose that company and are, thus, responsible for its actions. There
is NO reason on this earth that it should take 5 or 6 weeks to finish shipping
this relatively small number of DVDs. Yet, people have posted that they
received their DVDs 5 to 6 weeks ago (in the US), yet some of us are still
sucking air (also in the US). I certainly hope you will not be using the same
company again.

And, for the record, problems with fulfillment on the last 2 sets of conference
DVDs has lost RunRev at least one sale (mine) of a subsequent product a
significant part of which was conference DVDs from the upcoming 2010
conference.

True, true, and unrelated.

My take on the same scenario is that Apple had a great product, and Supercard
and Metacard after them. They all just dropped the ball. RunRev came along
picked up that ball and have been running with it ever since--despite what I
perceive to be major obstacles along the way. Why shouldn't they have my
loyalty? They are the only folks who've stuck with it for the long haul.

Re: Interesting blog post - comments anyone?

2009-11-25 Thread Marian Petrides
Heather,

I hope the following is tame enough for you, although I suspect it may not be.
:-)))

Marian

I'm a full-time physician educator with a medical school faculty appointment
and no formal training in programming. I've been using Revolution since it
first came out and have been able to write several fairly complex interactive
applications that are published by the leading press in my field using
Revolution. Frankly, without Revolution I would not have had the time to even
THINK of undertaking such an endeavor.

To my mind, what Revolution offers to people like me is the ability to create a
customized application that would take me forever to explain to a professional
programmer who knows nothing about Transfusion Medicine and would likely cost a
fortune to implement. All it took was some time learning basic syntax and the
ability to set down the logic I created in a series of IF-THEN or CASE
algorithms--not exactly rocket science.

So, before you belittle Revolution for the statements you quoted, namely:

>>>>>>“Empowers people who would never have attempted programming to create
>>>>>>successful applications,” and that this, ”Enables software construction
>>>>>>for everyone.”

please consider that even non-professional programmers are capable of logical
thinking and that some of us just need to get the job done in way that works
properly and preferable that doesn't interfere with our day jobs.

I could not have written the two apps I have published thusfar were it not for
Revolution, so Revolution DID empower me to take on an unfamiliar task and
construct software that "just works." I'm sure my code is not nearly as
elegant as that I've seen other folks do with Revolution, but it did the trick
for me and for that I am forever grateful.

Yes, I believe keyword searching is also not possible. I KNEW there

Or maybe that's just because I haven't had time to use Rev at all

So the DX is not recommended for use in germany.

Re: [OT] Anyone using an ebook reader with the RunrevDictionary PDF?

2009-11-05 Thread Marian Petrides

Matthias

I have the Kindle 2, Kindle DX and used to have a Sony 505.

I would recommend using the Kindle DX, since it will give you nearly
full size display of your PDF (albeit as a graphic PDF, not a reflowed
text PDF). I've tried the Sony 505 (same size screen as 600) but PDFs
were so small I couldn't read them. Same problem would be present if
the Kindle 2 were capable of native display of PDFs (without
conversion to AZW)--and I can't recall offhand if it even can.

Long story short, the only thing that does this adequately at present
is the Kindle DX. The only downside to reading PDFs on the DX is that
the page is displayed as a graphic not as reflowing text, so can not

Re: On-Rev: Also a Founder

This was too good a deal to pass up. So, I took the leap and am now a
Founder. Unfortunately, I'm a total neophyte to web hosting, so it'll
take me a tad longer than Tim to get up and running.

And now, the big question for the day: Is "Neophyte Founder" a true

2009-04-16 Thread Marian Petrides, MD
This sounds like a great deal, even for people like me that have no
idea yet how we would use it. ;-)

A quick question, Kevin--one that may well demonstrate how much of a
neophyte I am when it comes to server apps--if so, sorry. What
happens when the server app goes beta or even live? Will we founding
members still be able to use it? Will use of it depend on renewing
our Rev subscription? Or will it be a totally separate subscription?

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to announce something big, and let you behind the scenes a
little bit.

Periodically we see posts on the Use and Improve lists about using
Revolution on a server. We all know what a great language Rev is, and
there's been a free server engine out for many years that many
people have

enjoyed using. I've tried it myself, but found a lot of the same
frustrations that other have reported. Finding the right engine,
putting it
the right place, setting permissions, frustrating and confusing
errors.
Wading into Linux-land to figure things out. Dealing with ISPs who
don't

want to spend the effort making things work.

A spat of messages on this topic came up recently. I think what
you've been
asking for boils down to this: "Why can't we have a best-of-breed
hosting
package combined with a pre-configured Rev server scripting
environment,
that just works! No hassle!". Well the timing of this discussion was
good,
as we're now ready to introduce something we've been planning for a
while: a

proper server version of Revolution.

Its been a fun process developing the service. We've put our newest
scripting technology up there, so people can start using short, easy
snippets of Rev code in their HTML pages. The engineers have come up
with
some neat stuff. A new Internet library that is super-fast and low-
overhead.
A scheme for hooking into the server for live debugging. And they'll
have
more to bring to the table soon: new syntax for working with
databases that

is crystal-clear.

The plan caught on like wildfire in the office. Everyone had
something to
contribute. The enthusiasm was palpable both in the offices and in
our Skype

meetings across the oceans. The result in our brand-new On-Rev Server
product, which you can see at http://www.On-Rev.com.

With On-Rev, we've put it all together for you. This is an extremely
simple,
friendly, and easy-to-use server scripting environment compared to
anything

else out there or any previous Rev server scripting engine.

- We've nailed the hosting side of it... you'll find it really
attractive

compared to whatever you're using now. Ample disk space and bandwidth,
world-class data center and screaming fast hardware. Ultra-reliable.
The
ability to host unlimited domains, spam filtering, one-click
installs, the

works. No question this is a hosting plan you'd love.

- And we've paired it with the alpha release of our amazing new server
scripting platform. Already, as of today, you can play with the new
server

Script Editor and Debugger, using the all-new second-generation server
scripting engine. You can a write simple snippet of code, like put the
time ?>, into your HTML page and boom it just works! If there is a
problem,
you can *step through* your server code and watch all your
environment,
global and script variables live in real-time! Dear heavens, if you
have any
love of Rev coding at all, this should rock your world! Not to
mention that
you'll have the chance to give input and help shape the direction of
the
service, at the same time you're first in line for all of our new
goodies

coming down the pike.

Ok... there's "one more thing." We appreciate our customers, and we
want to

make sure everyone has the opportunity to learn and use Rev server
scripting. We want to see what you can do! Rev-based content
management
systems? Online games? A really easy-to-use storefront? Multi-user
database
systems? We know you can do it! So... to make this irresistible...
to make
it so you have absolutely no reason not to get into our new server
scripting

platform at the ground level... we asked one more question:

"Can we introduce it at $499 for life?"

We ran the numbers and the answer was a resounding YES... as long as
we kept
it to limited numbers and a very short introductory period, we could
do it.
Of course we want to reward our loyal customers. But we also want to
reward
the early adopters who will be vital in helping us shape the
service. And we
need an active community of people using the platform so that we
have lots
of experts sharing advice, code for games, blogs, CMS systems...you
name

it...

Now, I already mentioned this is an amazing deal just considering the
hosting. Shop around and you'll find this caliber of hosting going
for as
much as $250 a year or $25/month. (We didn't want to compete with
those
cramped shared services of "unlimited-but-not-real

Re: The "stinking truth".

2008-12-01 Thread Marian Petrides, MD

Richard

Thanks for the illuminating history of RunRev.

M
On Dec 1, 2008, at 12:45 PM, Richard Gaskin wrote:

The misunderstanding here is simply that the MC engine *is* the Rev
engine.

It began life in 1992 under the name "MetaCard", back when it was
owned and maintained by Scott Raney's MetaCard Corp.

While it was still owned by MetaCard Corp., Kevin Miller's company
at the time, Crossworlds Computing, built a nifty alternative IDE
for it, and arranged a licensing agreement with MC Corp to
distribute the engine with their IDE for a much lower licensing fee
to their customers in consideration for Crossworlds providing
support for it.

Later, Kevin et al formed a new company under the name Runtime
Revolution Ltd., and in 2003 acquired the rights to the MC engine
and its source, rebranding it as "Revolution":

Since RunRev Ltd. had their own IDE they had no use for MC's more
"primitive" one, so MC Corp retained the rights to that IDE and
worked with their loyal customers to arrange for it to be maintained
under an open source license (X11, aka "MIT License"). Under those
terms, MC Corp. remains the copyright holder of all portions of the
original code that are still in the MC IDE today (most of it,
although a couple dozen of us have been contributing bits here and
there, with Klaus Major doing most of the heavy lifting in recent
years - thanks Klaus!), but also allowing the project to be forked
and any portion of it to be used for any non-commercial or even
commercial work if desired. In fact, we chose the X11 license (as
opposed to LGPL and some others with derivative use restrictions)
specifically in anticipation of the possibility that we might come
up with something there that could be useful to RunRev, so they
would be fully protected if they chose to take advantage of anything
in it; a modest consideration in exchange for their good work in
maintaining and enhancing the engine running.

In 2006 RunRev strengthened their engine licensing security in a way
which makes it easier for third parties to create their own IDEs.
Today it's relatively simple for anyone to create the custom
environment of their dreams, while the engine itself requires only
that a Rev installation has been successfully licensed on that
machine. Win-win for all: RunRev ensures their revenue for the
engine license, while we get total freedom in our workflows (a
brilliant move, Mr. Waddingham - thanks!).

So while the MC IDE is open source, and anyone can make any other
stacks they like within the Rev license terms, to run any of these
still requires the proprietary closed-source Rev engine.

Re: Tablet PC And Rev

2008-11-20 Thread Marian Petrides, MD

Tim

I just created a stack with a single button and a single field named
"MyField" containing the following script:

On MouseUp
Ask "What is your name?"
Get it
put it into field "MyField"
End mouseUp

It runs fine in both orientations, but the sticky wicket is that it
does not allow input from the stylus--not even if you try to use the
Tablet PC Input Panel (the insert button is dimmed out on the Input
Panel). So the only way to enter text is by the keyboard. And THAT
is problematic when the tablet is in portrait orientation because the
keyboard is hidden behind the tablet screen. It IS possible but it is
very kludgy. And, more importantly, you can NOT enter handwritten
text. Or maybe you can and I just don't know how to capture such input.

Sorry.

Using arrow keys to move from card to card

2008-09-11 Thread Marian Petrides, MD
I have a stack which functions just as I intend it except for one
card. When run from a splash screen standalone, that arrow keys on my

About PayPal and just using a credit card, yes, that's how a lot of
sites are, but this one (wherever it is) only has options for
signing into, or signing up for PayPal. There doesn't appear to be a
way to do just credit card payment. Like others, most of my online
purchases have involved eSellerate or Kagi, and those do allow use
of credit cards without signing up for PayPal.

Actually, I set up my PayPal account to automatically use my PayPal
credit card (I made it the default payment method). So all I needed to
be able to do was sign in from the eBay auction. I'm not crazy about
PayPal either but this seemed to be an adequate compromise. They
never get my cash money (to put a hold on) and I have the usual credit
card protections. If I have a dispute, then it is handled through the
credit card issuer. But, this is the first time I have used this
method (the other time I did a single purchase using a credit card),
so I really don't know how well it will work. YMMV.

FWIW, I solved that one by getting a PayPal credit card. I use it
ONLY for PayPal transactions, making it easy to figure out if it has
been misused and also giving me the same consumer protections that any
other credit card affords.

I DID, however, find it impossible to pay for an eBay item (couldn't
log into PayPal from eBay) with Safari. No problem when I switched to
Firefox and attempted the same transaction. Maybe you have a browser

They all learned programming in a day, of course! ;-)

Seriously, the workshop was a challenge because we had a wide range

45 people!) But we tried hard to address everyone's needs by
offering lots of basic stuff and some more advanced concepts, all
backed up with lots of one-on-one attention. Judging by the
favorable comments we heard, the workshop was a success. If any

I don't know about 1 and 2, but you can easily make a printing
script on top of my documentation reader, to create the dictionary
as pdf, or print it.

For example (untested):

on mouseUp
repeat with x = 1 to the number of lines in field "list" of stack
"bvg docu"

set the hilitedline of field "list" of stack "bvg docu" to x
send "selectionchanged" to field "list" of stack "bvg docu"
put the htmltext of field "text" of stack "bvg docu" after theText
 end repeat
 revPrintText theText --or whatever
end mouseUp

Note that you need lots of time, as well as a tree's worth of paper
to print onto (best to test it first with just few entries in the
field "list").

BvG Docu can be found on my page:
bjoernke.com/runrev/stacks.php

have fun

If you have a current update package you qualify for it. I believe
certain purchasers of 2.7.x (those who purchased before a particular

Re: Beware! GTX2 can cause problems

2008-03-18 Thread Marian Petrides, M.D.
One quick suggestion if I might offer it if this appears to be an
isolated problem with a beta version of GLX2, maybe we should retire
this discussion to the Daniel-Mara site.
The reason I suggest this is that previous negative comments about
Galaxy (years ago) had kept me from installing GLX2 for months after I
bought it as part of the Christmas bundle. Then several very positive
comments last week finally caused me to work up the courage to install
it--which I wish I had done a long time ago.

Thusfar, it hasn't caused any problems (I'm using 2.0.2 not a 2.1
beta) and it is so much easier to use (ability to see code for
multiple objects at once is just GREAT!).

I'd hate to think that our discussions here about a _beta_ might scare
others away from using this very helpful tool. Just a thought... I'll
go back to lurking now.

When I watch the Windows Task Manager, it is Revolution that is

Perhaps there has been some sort of Windows update that doesn't show

GTX2 and this is where the confusion came in. If you edit a
script in one version of RunRev/GTX2, then open the Script in
the version of RunRev/GTX2, the changes don't appear! I think
that GTX2 must be caching the Script Source code somewhere
that is Private to the Version of RunRev you are currently
using?

In addition to Sarah and Jerry's comments I would also add
that GLX2 stores the script you are working on (hasn't been
compiled yet) in the object itself. So the script you are
working on follows that object around. So opening the script
of the object in another version of Rev running GLX2 should
still show the script in progress (done this plenty of times
myself).

Opening the script in the Rev script editor will NOT show the
working script, however, since Rev doesn't know about GLX2
custom properties.

So if you aren't seeing changes as you move between two
versions of Rev that are both using GLX2 then my guess is that
you have the stack open in both versions at the same time and
aren't reloading the stack into memory. If a stack file has
been loaded in memory and you change the stack file on disk
the changes on disk will not show up in the stack in memory
until it is reloaded. Is it possible that this is what is
happening on your end?

Re: OT: Programming as a profession-the "practice" model

2008-03-16 Thread Marian Petrides, M.D.
Oops. Sorry, Joe. That was not supposed to be an all-inclusive list
(it didn't include, for example, my sister's profession either--
educator). And there are many others, too.

No offense was intended--I hope none was taken.

I entirely agree that the lessons learned from programming have made
me a better physician and vice versa. In fact, what I like best about
programming is the application of the scientific method in a context
that SHOULD be internally consistent. That is to say, if I do the same
thing twice it should yield the same result. (Try that with human
patients if you want an exercise in frustration.) Then again, I'm one
of those weird people who actually enjoys beta testing. Hmm...
diagnostic medicine as beta testing... works for me. ;-)

Oh, yeah. And I hear my residents calling themselves "newbies" every
day. (NOT!) :-)

Some excellent points, Marian.

I'm a little disappointed that you didn't include Architecture in
your listing of "practices"; even more so by computer science's use
of the term architect in various aspects of the work to be done.
Actually, following my involvement with computers, I became a much
better Architect due to several realizations. I've mentioned this
before, elsewhere; but I believe it is worth mentioning again. In my
earlier days as an Architect, I found myself procrastinating, being
unwilling to actually start work on a project; mostly by being
overwhelmed with the magnitude of what needed to be done.

Once I started breaking things down, solving "little" bits and
pieces, the project started to be less imposing. Then it even
started to be fun. But I always felt guilty about the earlier
procrastination. After spending some time trying to program Macs,
reading a lot of books on many programming languages, making a whole
bunch of false starts, I came upon the concept of breaking the
problem down into small, resolvable pieces; solving what I knew how
to solve; and researching how to do the things that I didn't already
know how to resolve.

Unfortunately, this was never taught "specifically" at U.C. Berkeley
where I got my architectural degree. Maybe it was implied, since we
did spend an enormous amount of time with preliminary designs and
working with "programs" for projects; however, the programs for the
projects were always handed to us as a part of our assignments, with
no realization of the process. Had I been studying Computer Science,
that would have been one of the first things I would have be taught.
(I think!) I learned this very quickly when I started writing
Handlers and Functions for my computer programs.

I now apply this mentality to Architecture, and have come to realize
that "procrastination" (but by a different name) is part of all
problem solving. It is during this "procrastination" process that we
digest the requirements of a project, and start breaking it down
into "aha! I can solve that" bits and pieces. The time is not
wasted. Sometimes it even saves time by coming up with a better
approach than might have been taken had we plunged right into "doing
it". Incidentally, this list is a great resource for that
"procrastination process", and then for the subsequent "researching"
process. I only wish Architects had a similar resource, but I'm
afraid we're too egotistical to admit that we don't have all the
answers ourselves. You never hear an Architect self-label themselves
as "newbies". (enormous smile!)

as practiced. Just as medical or law schools teach the rudiments
of the profession, the real learning takes place in the day-to-day
practice. Without lifelong learning, no lawyer, doctor, or

Someone once told me in my first year of medical school that
"medicine is a personal philosophy, tempered by science and

statement applies equally to programming. My 2 cents.

Because they run in Hypercard only, you'd have to have an older Mac

On behalf of Daniels & Mara and in partnership with Runtime

the arrival of GLX2 version 2.0.1.

This faster-smaller-better point release has a lot of punch:

1. Binary is ONE THIRD the size of its predecessor.
2. Most major operations are TWICE AS FAST.
3. It has several new features requested by our users.
4. Until the end of October, there are a couple ways to get
it free. It has a $99 (USD) value.

Details of the 2.0.1 Release:

* GLX2 binary is one third the size of v2.0.0 and auto-
updates itself three times faster.
* Opening, editing, typing, clairvoyance and most major
functionality is twice as fast.
* A new Status Bar now attaches itself seamlessly to the
bottom of the Revolution Dock and then shows either status
messages or the name of the object beneath the mouse pointer.
* Three new script formatting features now make your code
even more readable at a glance.
* Handler lists now have icons indicating whether they are
private, public or custom property handlers.
* Extended Bread Crumbs option creates a more detailed
history by adding the name of any handler that you have
modified to the Crumb Bar.

* Registration code can now be updated within GLX2.
* Change history and license expiration date can be viewed
instantly.
* Execution errors now handled through standard Revolution
error dialog.

Same great features of 2.0.0: tabbed code browsing,
clairvoyance, bread crumb histories, linked handlers and no-
click inspection. They're just faster and in some cases
enhanced with new functionality.

2. As regards the pricing, I know the price in US Dollars is $99,

In lieu of a trial version, we have made the documentation, many

Fellow Revolutionaries...

On behalf of Daniels & Mara and in partnership with Runtime
Revolution, it is my pleasure that I announce to you today the
arrival of GLX2 version 2.0.1.

This faster-smaller-better point release has a lot of punch:

1. Binary is ONE THIRD the size of its predecessor.
2. Most major operations are TWICE AS FAST.
3. It has several new features requested by our users.
4. Until the end of October, there are a couple ways to get it
free. It has a $99 (USD) value.

Details of the 2.0.1 Release:

* GLX2 binary is one third the size of v2.0.0 and auto-updates
itself three times faster.
* Opening, editing, typing, clairvoyance and most major
functionality is twice as fast.
* A new Status Bar now attaches itself seamlessly to the bottom
of the Revolution Dock and then shows either status messages or
the name of the object beneath the mouse pointer.
* Three new script formatting features now make your code even
more readable at a glance.
* Handler lists now have icons indicating whether they are
private, public or custom property handlers.
* Extended Bread Crumbs option creates a more detailed history
by adding the name of any handler that you have modified to the
Crumb Bar.

Find out what else GLX2 can do and how to get it for free:

http://daniels-mara.com/glx2

Read an astounding news item on performance improvements:

http://daniels-mara.com/glx2/news.html (warning: humorous

NOTE: GLX2 is only compatible with Revolution version 2.8.1 and
higher on Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista operating systems.

Thanks for your kind attention!

Re: Why Save the Mac Mini

2007-07-15 Thread Marian Petrides
Well, I must admit (ducking for cover), I'm using the 30 incher
primarily as an HDTV (using an El Gato tuner), for watching videos
and for (yes, I admit it!) playing games. "Apple TV, I don't need no

The gaming function, in particular, pretty much requires a dedicated
graphics card. I'd love to be able to just leave my mini hooked up
to the 30 inch display full time instead of attaching and detaching
the MBP.

OK, I signed too. I rarely use my mini, preferring the MacBook
Pro, but I still like having it.

I thought about adding support for 30 inch Apple cinema display to
the wish list (the mini currently drives a 20 inch cinema display

I'm sure that would add way too much to the cost. I'd be happy

Re: [OT] iPhone anyone?

2007-06-30 Thread Marian Petrides
Actually, I'm able to type quite fast with a single finger on my
iPhone, but my hands are quite small. It'll take a while for me to
be able to type with two thumbs, but I rarely do that anyway. One
trick that really does work is to just type and depend on the
predictive typing to actually work--most of the time it does quite
well, although I bet it wouldn't do as well with esoteric words (like
medical terms).

As for zooming with the map, I found tapping to work well, but it was
possible to tap to a zoom level for which there were no images--which
at first looked like the map application had hung up. Then I tried
used the finger-squeeze technique to zoom back out a little and poof
the satellite map came back.

Some observations:

  - Most definitely 'perfectly sized' form factor. Beautiful finish.
  - Software and interface extremely intuitive. All of it works well
  (except Map*)
  - When operating it, there really is a WOW factor. It really is
beautiful software. Reminds me of a futuristic demonstration
video prepared

  by Hollywood.
  - Very surprised at the data rate. I was able to see YouTube vids
quickly. The browser seemed a little slow, but not bad. Not until
later when
Chris reminded me I was on a WAN did I realize it. I imagine the
Edge
network would be slow. If it's like the Sidekick, it's too slow
to really

  surf the net.
  - Tried using the Map application, but it kept crashing. The two
finger 'zoom in' and 'zoom out', while cool, is very confusing to
the Map
application. Much better would be a zoom slider switch you could
drag with

  one finger.
  - Absolutely could not type on the keyboard. Very difficult. Perhaps
my fingers are too large. Where's the stylus when you need one?
(Side note:
there WILL be a huge market in 3rd party styluses for this
thing.) My guess
is they'll have to fix the keyboard input. AFAICT, it's just not
usable.

I know I'll wait for them to get the kinks out.

Re: Last Post (OT: "Schizophrenic" )

2007-06-17 Thread Marian Petrides
Ummm... there's the literal definition of schizophrenic (see #1
below) and then there is the broader use of the term (see #2).

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/schizophrenic
schiz·o·phren·ic (skts-frnk)
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or affected with schizophrenia.
2. Of, relating to, or characterized by the coexistence of disparate

I believe the second definition would apply the to manner in which

How to tell which version of Rev created a stack

2007-06-15 Thread Marian Petrides

Hi, all,

I have an application I created years ago in an early version of Rev
(somewhere between 2.1.2 and 2.5) in which I am trying to update the
content. Since I have found the app as written works fine on all
platforms I am interested in, including Vista, I see no reason to
update it to a newer version of Rev before I do the content update.

The problem is I can't remember which version of Rev I originally
used to develop the app. Is there some way to determine which
version of Rev was used to develop a particular app?

Thanks.

If any of you are sitting on the fence about the Vista Business
upgrade that you can get free if you either buy a full version or an

that my upgrade just arrived (I did the early update about 10 days
ago) from Amazon (US). Sweet! Haven't installed it yet... we know
what my weekend is going to look like.

I know there was some grumbling a while ago about bonus DVDs not
arriving on time. That didn't sound like the way Run Rev does
business--in my experience they keep their promises in a timely
fashion. So I thought I'd reassure people that the Vista upgrades
are getting shipped promptly and arriving earlier than I ever

Re: Parallels Desktop

2007-02-19 Thread Marian Petrides
Joe is completely correct. You still have to buy Windows to install
using Boot Camp. Sorry if my post suggested that Boot Camp was a way
to avoid having to buy WinXP (or Vista). Quite the opposite--neither
Boot Camp nor Parallels include a Windows install disk, so both will
require coughing up for Windows.

I was just suggesting that one could buy Windows, try out Boot Camp
and if it meets ones needs (as it does mine) then avoid the added
expense of Parallels on top of WinXP or Vista.

Brent gave a very cogent summary of the advantages and disadvantages
of virtualization. Thanks.

Right now, when I work on my Mac, I simply save anything I want to
port to Windows on my XP partition. Then when I reboot into WinXP, I
have ready access to it. Of course, that only works if you format
your WinXP partition using FAT32, leaving you with a 30 (?32) GB
maximum partition size. Otherwise your Windows partition will not be
visible/accessible from OSX.

Mark

If you're going to fork over $$ to get Windows, why run it in
Parallels. Why not just use Boot Camp? My thinking is that I'd like
to have a full Windows install identical (except for Mac drivers) to
what my customers will be using, rather than testing in a virtualized

But that's just my 2 cents worth.

You might be able to run the iMac's HD in Firewire target mode from
the Powerbook, if you can connect the two via firewire. If this
works, then the iMac will appear just like any other an external HD

For exact instructions, check Apple's support pages and search for
firewire target mode. Most Macs can do this but some cannot and, I

Friends,

I am here on Niterói, BRASIL locking my bags and leaving for the

Cheers and power to the developer

Re: Date and Time Manipulation

Thanks!

While we are on the topic of dates, I've been thinking about
creating a "countdown" calendar, clocking the number of days
remaining between today's date and some future date (March 31,
20010 specifically). Any tips on how I can do this? Do I have to
convert dates into seconds in order to subtract one from the
other? Thanks.

Hi Marian,

In case this helps, I wrote a minimalist countdown utility for
christmas last year:

Christmas Countdown

You will also find below various date manipulation functions. They
were written rapidly and haven't been extensively tested. You are
very welcome to improve them.
That library can be found at ,
along with other code and libraries.

Other websites with useful codes are listed at:

There are some time related tutorials at So smarts Software, for
instance ()
