Hi!

I have been working on adding support for Cloudstack in packer.io. This way it
is simple to create either new templates from scratch or update an existing
template. For creating the initial template from scratch we have a custom iPXE
ISO that will fetch the iPXE-script via userdata, boot kernel+initrd and
finally perform a kickstart installation (we use centos).

So the no more manual intervention to upload ISOs, select options in installer,
stop the VM and finally create the template. Everything is automated.

Plan is to upstream this to packer proper or release it as a independent
plugin. Currently the code need some cleanup.

Well, I wrote that library so I’m using it. :)

I will try to make that library more agnostic to packer, that the plugin will
be in a more releasable state. We are testing a version of packer with

management server DB timeout

2014-01-21 Thread Abu Bashiri
Hey Guys,

just some short question. Is there a way to increase the DB timeout for the
management server?

I use mha for mysql master / slave automatic failover. Everything works but
everytime I perform a master failover and the virtual IP changes, the
management server shows me immediately the following:

DB communication problem detected, fence it

2014-01-21 14:19:51,502 DEBUG [cloud.cluster.ClusterManagerImpl]
(Cluster-Notification-1:null) Notify management server node isolation to
listeners

2014-01-21 14:19:51,503 ERROR [cloud.cluster.ClusterFenceManagerImpl]
(Cluster-Notification-1:null) Received node isolation notification, will
perform self-fencing and shut myself down

Can we avoid that self-fencing?

I already had a look at db.properties file but I cannot find a timeout
value.

thx

What exactly are you trying to get by” here?

There are 4 traffic types in CloudStack - management, storage, guest and
public. So,
if you had four physical network interfaces, your bridging would be as below:

eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
eth1 - cloudbr1 - storage
eth2 - cloudbr2 - guest
eth3 - cloudbr3 - public

If you had 8 physical interfaces:

eth0+eth4 - bond0 - cloudbr0 - management
eth1+eth5 - bond1 - cloudbr1 - storage
eth2+eth6 - bond2 - cloudbr2 - guest
eth3+eth7 - bond3 - cloudbr3 - public

And if you had 12 interfaces:

eth0+eth4+eth8 - bond0 - cloudbr0 - management
eth1+eth5+eth9 - bond1 - cloudbr1 - storage
eth2+eth6+eth10 - bond2 - cloudbr2 - guest
eth3+eth7+eth11 - bond3 - cloudbr3 - public

If you dont want to do bonding and had 3 NICs, then:

eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
eth1 - cloudbr1 - guest
eth2 - cloudbr2 - public

Next, if you had only 2 physical network interfaces, then...

eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
eth1 - cloudbr1 - guest+public

Finally, if you had only ONE physical interface...

eth0 - cloudbr0 - management+guest+public

There is no bonding involved anywhere. Bonding is required only if you require
to double your bandwidth requirements and/or build in fault tolerance
(LAGG/LACP).

at this moment I have two bridges management(cloudbr1) and
public/guest(cloudbr0) in CS when I try to create a network under Network
Offering is blank and am unable to select anything.

AFAIK, creating a new network offering via ‘Service Offering - Network
Offerings
- Add network offering’ is unrelated to your physical networking setup.

 any idea?

Bug in ACS maybe? Someone from the dev team might know more
(or open a Jira ticket for the same).

Also, you can always use the API to create network offerings.

 The actual steps:

 (1) Map ethernet interfaces to bond0
 (2) Map bond0 to bridge interface cloudbr0 (or cloudbr1 depending on your
 environment)

Any decent Linux bridging HOWTo would help you do steps (1) and (2),
 there
is nothing cloudstack specific about creating bonds+bridge. Just make
 sure
your bridge interface has a prefix of cloudbr

 Alternatively,

disappeared instead of it timing out.

I ended up creating a cron watchdog to start CS Management incase
it stopped, I'm sure there are more elegant solutions however, maybe using
upstart. If you wish I can paste it here.

What exactly are you trying to get by” here?

There are 4 traffic types in CloudStack - management, storage, guest and
 public. So,
if you had four physical network interfaces, your bridging would be as
 below:

 eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
 eth1 - cloudbr1 - storage
 eth2 - cloudbr2 - guest
 eth3 - cloudbr3 - public

If you had 8 physical interfaces:

 eth0+eth4 - bond0 - cloudbr0 - management
 eth1+eth5 - bond1 - cloudbr1 - storage
 eth2+eth6 - bond2 - cloudbr2 - guest
 eth3+eth7 - bond3 - cloudbr3 - public

And if you had 12 interfaces:

 eth0+eth4+eth8 - bond0 - cloudbr0 - management
 eth1+eth5+eth9 - bond1 - cloudbr1 - storage
 eth2+eth6+eth10 - bond2 - cloudbr2 - guest
 eth3+eth7+eth11 - bond3 - cloudbr3 - public

If you dont want to do bonding and had 3 NICs, then:

 eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
 eth1 - cloudbr1 - guest
 eth2 - cloudbr2 - public

Next, if you had only 2 physical network interfaces, then...

 eth0 - cloudbr0 - management
 eth1 - cloudbr1 - guest+public

Finally, if you had only ONE physical interface...

 eth0 - cloudbr0 - management+guest+public

There is no bonding involved anywhere. Bonding is required only if you
 require
to double your bandwidth requirements and/or build in fault tolerance
 (LAGG/LACP).

at this moment I have two bridges management(cloudbr1) and
public/guest(cloudbr0) in CS when I try to create a network under
 Network
Offering is blank and am unable to select anything.

AFAIK, creating a new network offering via ‘Service Offering - Network
 Offerings
 - Add network offering’ is unrelated to your physical networking setup.

  any idea?

Bug in ACS maybe? Someone from the dev team might know more
(or open a Jira ticket for the same).

Also, you can always use the API to create network offerings.

instance naming in a vmware 5.1 cloudstack 4.2.1 setup

2014-01-21 Thread Fuchs, Andreas (SwissTXT)
Hi we just tested the upgrade from 3.0.7 to 4.2.1 in our test environment

While the upgrade went smooth we see a big issue with vm naming in vmware.

With cs 3.0.7 vm's where named like this:

i-id-number-user_entered_vm_name

(with global setting of vm.instancename.flag = true)

After the update, vm's are just named as follow:

user_entered_vm_name

No i-id-number- anymore in vSphere. Global setting is unchanged.
This leads to issues when two different customers try to create a vm with the
same name! while cloudstack creates the instance in the db, vspeher will not
create a vm with the same name as an already existing vm.
This naming is also different from the descriptions in the docs.
Do others see this issue too? Or might it be related to our installation?

Best regards
Andi

Re: management server DB timeout

2014-01-21 Thread Marty Sweet
Hi,

From the managment server point of view (as I see it), it would have to
stop all communication to Agents and the like if it wished to do that, as
the data would become inconsistent with other Management Servers. I would
imagine this is too much work to implement, but I'm sure one of the
development guys will provide a better insight.

I currently implement the following work around:

___ Root Crontab ___
* * * * * /srv/csmanagement-watchdog

___ /srv/csmanagement-watchdog ___
#!/bin/bash
# If Cloudstack Management is not running, start it
if [ ! -e /var/run/cloudstack-management.pid ]; then
service cloudstack-management start
fi

Hope this helps,
Marty
