Windows instance DNS entries being lost by AD DNS servers
Hey guys. We have CS 4.1.1 running in our environment. I have a basic zone with the network offering set to only offer DHCP. When Windows instances are shut down or rebooted, their DNS entries in our Windows DNS servers are being lost. I have to get onto the instance and do 'ipconfig /registerdns' to be able to access the server by name again. Anyone experience this and/or have any suggestions on how to fix it? Re: How do I delete destroyed instances?
Welcome to CloudStack! They will expunge in time, however you can change how soon they get expunged by altering the following global settings: expunge.delay - Determines how long (in seconds) to wait before actually expunging destroyed vm. The default value = the default value of expunge.interval expunge.interval - The interval (in seconds) to wait before running the expunge thread. DNS issue with instances
Hey folks - I've noticed that if any of my instances are powered down for a short period of time, the records will get removed from our DNS servers (Windows AD based). Scavenging/purging is disabled on the DNS servers. The instances are joined to the domain, so one would assume the records would stay. Any thoughts on how to resolve this? You make your own and import them into CloudStack. There is an initiative to create some community ones available for download, but I don't believe they're available yet. Alex - these are all great suggestions, especially about the training, I had the chance to attend it at the collaboration conference earlier this year, and Geoff knows his stuff. But you're going to learn the most by installing/breaking/fixing it over and over and setting it up how it works for you. Also, you'll probably want to join the development mailing list. Re: How is Cloudstack work with Active Directory
What Suresh is refering to is something someone is working on for a future version of CS. In the current versions, I'm not aware of any global settings for ldap. See this blog post about creating a script a script to sync your LDAP users into CS. While this may not work for you, it is a starting point on the idea behind bulk adding LDAP based users into CS. I take from your reply earlier that things are working as expected now?? Re: How is Cloudstack work with Active Directory
It appears your queryfilter may be incorrect - You are trying to match the %u in CloudStack to 'disPlayname' in AD? Verify that whatever you put into the username field in CS matches whatever is in the 'disPlayname' field in AD (this can be found by opening AD Users and Computers, selecting the menu option to show advanced properties, then looking at the user, then clicking the 'attributes' tab. Is it possible to setup a couple instances in CloudStack as a Windows/SQL cluster? I ask, because there doesn't seem to be a way to present a volume to more than one instance. Regards, Kirk Jantzer http://about.met/kirkjantzer
Re: Storage options for new Cloudstack setup.
No, each host would add their storage. What David is saying, you shouldn't create the host presenting the 10 SSDs seperately, you'll want to create a RAID group and present that through Xenserver, then CloudStack will pick it up as the SR. Re: Storage options for new Cloudstack setup.
The hosts would be in a cluster, but their storage is local to the host. I'm not aware of anything in cloudstack yet (storage migration is slated for future versions) that would make it aware of replication done on the host level. People are experimenting with Ceph for primary storage, but I don't know all the details on what is/isn't possible with that. I'd wait for the experts to reply, but off the top of my head in the current versions (4.x), you'd lose the ability to live migrate instances and offer HA service offerings. Re: Storage options for new Cloudstack setup.
With the specs provided, you'll want to create a zone with local storage enabled (as well as change the global setting that allows system vms to be placed on primary storage). That way, when you add hosts, their local disks will be added as primary storage. Re: SystemVM's keep recycling
In my experience, yes, it has to do with your secondary storage and the system template not being accessible. Try the following: - disable the zone - remove the secondary storage from CS - mount it to your master server - run the command to add it - unmount it - add it back to CS - enable the zone Regards, Kirk Jantzer http://about.met/kirkjantzer On Tue, Aug 13, 2013 at 7:38 PM, KENT ORTELL JOHNSON wrote: > Hello all, > My System VM's keep recycling and they won't finish starting up. How did you change it? Have you restarted the CS management service since doing so? Try placing the secondary storage in mtc mode. Then remove the mtc mode - it should rescan the available space. I'm not entirelty certain about CS, but I do not some of the earlier hypervisors (xenserver, kvm, esx 4) only support datastores up to 2TB (minus 512B). to get around this in the guest, you could present multiple 2TB volumes, then raid them together in a raid-0. I doubt NFS is the issue. What are the specs of the VMs? What is the network like? What are the disks? Etc. There are too many variables to say "NFS is a CloudStack bottleneck". I just implemented a 35TB storage cluster that is capable of 10's of thousands of IOPS and >1GB (yes, gigabyte, not gigabit) network bandwidth via NFS. Re: Why does cloudstack create a vm instance through compute offering?
This is already an option. Lets say you have two compute offerings: Small (1 vcpu and 1gb ram) and Medium (2 vcpu and 2gb ram). You can simply change an instance from one to the other by powering off the instance and clicking on the 'change service offering' icon. Re: How to backup cloudstack data?
We won't be able to tell you that. You will have to determine what is most important to your organization to backup. For simplicity, definitely backup the DB. If you wanted to backup anything, I'd probably suggest the secondary storage, as it contains the templates, isos, and snapshots; of which you'll likely be able to recover from (rebuild instances) more easily. Re: How to backup cloudstack data?
I said this in another thread and figured I'd mention it here since it seems applicable. It is my belief that the cloud is the IaaS and that the applications that run on the cloud should be built for failure of the IaaS: they (instances/applications) should be rapidly deployable. So, it shouldn't matter what cloud product (openstack/cloudstack/vmware/aws/etc...) you provide to your customers, they should be able to redeploy their application where ever they go or are given for IaaS. With that said, if you really wanted to backup the VMs, you probably want to look at something that backed up thorough the storage device, or the hypervisor, and then backup the management and mysql db. The image didn't come through. Here is a link to the service I mentioned: http://imgur.com/ If you are savvy with mysql, you could look through the db to see if there are any volumes still tied to it that aren't showing in the UI. Please use an image sharing service (like imgur) to share images as they get stripped from the mailing list. On a side note, are you doing this as a root Admin? Did you create an account in CS to match that of the one on the leap server you're using to bind with the authentication? Re: How to migrate instances of OpenStack to Cloudstack.
That's because you shouldn't really be importing/exporting between clouds. The best way to avoid any issues would be to have your instances built from from a clean ISO install and then have them run post scripts or via a config manager (puppet, chef, etc...). This can be achieved in both Windows and Linux instances and will give you the most flexibility between any IaaS provider, hardware of cloud. Re: How to migrate instances of OpenStack to Cloudstack.
It is my belief that the cloud is the IaaS and that the applications that run on the cloud should be built for failure of the IaaS: they (instances/applications) should be rapidly deployable. So, it shouldn't matter what cloud product (openstack/cloudstack/vmware/aws/etc...) you provide to your customers, they should be able to redeploy their application whereever they go or are given for IaaS. Re: The snapshot chain is too long
Don't think of CS snapshots the same way you do as VMWare snapshots. CloudStack snapshots are WHOLE COPY BACKUPS of the instance. Also, in regards to snapshot chains, I know VMWare has a default setting per VM of 32 snapshots. If you exceed this, it will stop you from creating a new one. You can, however, modify that setting so that you can create more. I am not sure if XenServer has the same type of setting. Re: Windows Server 2008 Template
Ian - As the other Kirk said (I don't get to say that often :-P), if it's getting that kind of IP, it could mean the NIC drivers aren't getting installed correctly. I've found Windows works better in CS when you run post scripts that are kicked off via a sysprep answer file, rather than just wrapping things up in an image. VMs FINALLY started. Started back over from scratch with everything. Before I blew it away though, I WAS able to mount and read&write from the xenserver to the NFS. Not sure what the hell was going on, but it's all working now. Thanks guys! XS 6.1 doesn't work with the current releases (4.0.x); you'll have to use XS 6.0.1. Thanks! Must be another issue then. There is an existing zone and has local storage, but we're testing a Nexenta cluster for shared storage and setup a second zone/pod/cluster/host for this.
