[ANNOUNCE] Will Stevens as new Apache CloudStack VP

2016-05-19 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Morning Everyone,

Yesterday at the ASF board meeting, the board passed the resolution making Will
Stevens the new Vice President of the Apache CloudStack project.

Join me in congratulating Will on this appointment, wish him luck and bring
your unwavering support !

You may have noticed that Will took on RM duties for the new releases going
forward and has also taken a very active role to finish bringing us to github
based workflow and CI. Will has some updates on that front that I am sure you
will all like.

Quick note about $dayjob

2016-01-26 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi folks,

As some of you might have guessed I am changing $dayjob.

This is an exciting time for me, but it also means that I will become less
involved with CloudStack. ( I said *less* involved, did not say I was going to
disappear). I have informed the PMC and offered to stop my VP role ahead of the
March deadline. As you know we have a one-year rotation for the VP role.
However if the PMC does not see a problem with it I will gladly continue until
March.

I will keep this brief but I wanted to let you know so that you don’t wonder
why my involvement in recent releases and votes has decreased.

It is an exciting time for CloudStack as well, with ever greater releases ( in
large part to Remi, Wilder and a few others), a strong proposal to offer LTS
and the commitment from Accelerite.

Change is good, challenges are opportunities says Sensei Wu from Ninjago :)

PS:
If you wonder, I am launching my own container startup called Skippbox. I will
grant myself a shameless plug, and if you know anyone interested in containers
and kubernetes I sure could use some help ( https://github.com/skippbox ,
http://www.skippbox.com/blog/), github stars and PRs :)

Cheers,

Thoughts on Citrix announcement yesterday

2016-01-12 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi everyone (cross-posting),

Yesterday Citrix announced that it sold its CloudPlatform business to
Accelerite from Persistent Systems [1]

As you know CloudPlatform is Citrix’s commercial distribution of Apache
CloudStack. I wanted to share a few thoughts on what this means for CloudStack.

One of the core tenet of the Apache Software Foundation is non-affiliation to
companies, as such all of us on these lists participate and contribute to
CloudStack as individuals. While the majority of us who are contributing daily
to CloudStack are actually doing it as part of our day jobs we still voice our
opinions as individuals and companies do not (and should not) have influence on
what we do. This is one of the things that makes ASF great. This is also one of
the reasons why the ASF and us as a project will not comment on this
announcement. It is Citrix’s business, not ours.

That said, Citrix gave CloudStack to the ASF back in 2012 and contributed
heavily in the early days to its development and maintenance. We should be
thankful to Citrix for donating this software and helping the community grow.
Giving it to the ASF was also the move that allows us to keep on going like
“business” as usual. We as a project do not depend on Citrix. Hence Citrix
selling its CloudPlatform business does not change our day to day.

Over the years it is fair to say that Citrix involvement through the many
individuals participating on these lists as diminished, with the vast majority
of the work now carried on by others. If we were to do a ASF “faux-pas” and
actually check affiliation of the folks that are doing most of the development
and release work, we would see other companies than Citrix. Companies offering
CloudStack services but also and mostly CloudStack users, a few doing it as a
hobby and most because their company uses it. This is open source at its core,
folks using a software, loving it, loving their peers, and contributing back
for the benefit of everyone.

It is impossible for me to say what Accelerite will do, I have had no contact
with them so far and did not know this sale was coming. Neither do I know what
will happen to all the fine Citrix engineers that were still working on
CloudStack. Whatever they do, I wish them the best and thank them for the
dedication to our project over the years. Early indication from the press
release seems to indicate that Accelerite will engage with us. If they do, we
will welcome them like any contributors to an ASF project. With openness,
transparency and respect (the Apache way).

I do want to mention that I think this may be an opportunity for CloudStack.
Observers might think that our project is dead because of Citrix selling its
business, but they would be mis-informed about the nature of ASF projects. I
actually believe the contrary and think this will be a time where more users
and potentially companies will engage more actively. They will see that the
route to a successful Cloud is through engaging and becoming part of our
community. They will also finally stop thinking that CloudStack is a Citrix
product and that might be the kicker that brings them on board.

Finally, being a technical guy, I like to focus on technical things. We have
done some great strides over the past 8 months, we have stabilized CloudStack
and are now releasing faster than ever, we have dockerized, we have pluginized,
we have had several events... In september we will go to Brazil for CCC. Brazil
is seeing a huge growth in CloudStack adoption.

We still have a ton to do, from removing technical debt, fixing security
issues, improving packaging, making CloudStack ever more easier to develop and
use. This has not changed. We have some very important discussions going on
around LTS and GitHub hosting. If anything I think the container movement is a
bigger threat to our project than Citrix’s announcement. As companies start to
embrace the container ecosystem and building containerized applications, what
happens to CloudStack ? How does CloudStack work in a container world ? The
same question are valid for OpenStack by the way, I just don’t buy into the
Magnum effort, but I digress :)

So thank you Citrix, we hope to welcome Accelerite and let’s keep on Stacking,

Re: What is Size of a typical ACS production environment?

2015-10-14 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
If I had to guess I would say 80/20 applies.

80% of cloudstack deployments < 100 nodes
20% > 100 nodes

There is a long tail..

there is actually research/stats on size of HPC clusters out there, and 80/20
roughly applies on size of cluster.

CCC EU

2015-10-12 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi folks,

CCC Dublin 2015 is over and we had a blast.

Thanks to our sponsors who helped make this happen:
Citrix, Cloud Foundry foundation, Nuage Networks, Shapeblue, Cloudian,
Solidfire, ikoula, LPI-Japan, PC Extreme and Cloud Ops.

A few take aways:

1-We had 150 people at the event, which is clearly lower than previous events.
Mesos Conference EU which was just upstairs from us also brought in 150 people,
and the entire Linuxcon 1500. Getting 10% of the whole of Linuxcon is quite
good when you think of the breadth of that community.

2-For 2016, we announced CCC Latin America in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The community
is booming over there and we are all excited to plan that event. Assuming we
all find the budget, we should all meet up there.

3-LPI-Japan announced a CloudStack certification exam in english. We will
distribute a code on the mailing lists. With the code if you take the exam, our
project will get 33% of the proceeds. LPI-Japan and Shapeblue teamed up to make
this happen.

4-Pierre-Luc Dion and Erik Weber won the Docker challenge. PL gave a
presentation about his solution and Erik put it on github
https://github.com/terbolous/cloudstack-docker-compose. Packaging CloudStack as
containers is an interesting idea going forward.

5-We had several discussions around our new release process, testing and PR
reviews. Expect a separate email summarizing these discussions and a proposal
to move forward soon.

I expect all videos to be online in the coming weeks. If you gave a talk you
can upload your slides through the linuxcon portal or put them on slideshare
and tweet about it.

Congratulations to all, let’s keep on making CloudStack better,

Cheers,

UI translation for 4.6

2015-10-09 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Milamber reminded me that before releasing 4.6 we should include the latest
translated strings for the UI.
If you care about translation, you might be interested to work on it in the
coming days.

Here is where we stand:

Portuguese (Brazil) 100%
French (France) 100%

Japanese (Japan)99%
Hungarian 98%
Chinese (China) 93%
Dutch (Netherlands) 89%
Russian (Russia)75%
German (Germany)71%
Norwegian Bokmål (Norway) 70%
Korean (Korea) 66%
Spanish 53%

Italian (Italy) 36%
Polish 21%
Catalan 13%
Arabic 12%
Persian 11%
Romanian (Romania) 9%
Chinese (Taiwan)7%
Georgian5%
Thai (Thailand) 5%
Turkish (Turkey)2%
Tatar 2%
Indonesian 1%

you can see that Japanese, Hungarian, Chinese and Dutch are really close to
100%:

CloudStack Docker images on Docker hub.

2015-08-24 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi Everyone,

Last week David and I worked on the Docker hub to get automated builds for
ec2stack and cloudmonkey.

You can now get those on Docker hub:

$ docker pull cloudstack/cloudmonkey
$ docker pull cloudstack/ec2stack

These are automated build of master, I will work to get other tags that
corresponds to the release.

Please try it and let me know how that works. If you see any issues feel free
to send PR to the respective projects.
The images will build automatically and you should be able to test it right
away.

Also you have images for the simulator and the mgt server under cents

$ docker pull cloudstack/simulator
$ docker pull cloudstack/management_centos6

We need to split the MySQL db from the mgt server and get a build going for the
usage server as well.

The goal would be to have a docker-compose file that starts the mgt server, db,
usage server and ec2stack.
PR welcome for this, it’s a fun project for anyone interested in Docker.

Enjoy,

-Sebastien

Re: Is ACS will Support Docker

Can anyone say will the ACS will support docker / RancherOS / CoreOS so
that we can create a container via cloudstack and assign same as now public

if you search the archive you will see that we have discussed this several
times already.

CoreOS templates are well supported and several cloudstack providers already
offer it in production.

RancherOS is not yet available as a cloudstack template, that would be a nice
project. Any takers ?

Soem folks are packaging cloudstack in containers for easy deployment.

To date a few of us don’t think cloudstack should orchestrate containers, we
prefer to leave that to swarm/kubernetes or lattice.

That said there is a ‘docker’ branch in the repo, that was a proof of concept
of supporting docker…

As far as networking in docker, it is fast evolving right now. Docker network
is not yet release. IMHO there is no point of jumping hoops with bunch of NAT
and IP tables magic for port forwarding until Docker network is out and stable,
not before decembre 2015 (IMHO, Docker 2.0). At that time, there might be some
interesting things to do in Cloudstack.

Re: Any Plan on developing the cloudstack on this

2015-07-08 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
HI Keerthi,

It seems you want this in cloudstack.
So how does a feature gets into the code ?

Someone needs to write it, and since Apache is a volunteer open source
organization there is no funding assigned for code development. The CloudStack
project as such does not have a budget.

Moreover since we are all volunteers (even though some of us are paid to work
on cloudstack), we cannot assign issues to each other or tell someone - hey got
write that feature-.

If you really want this, you can:

1-Create a feature spec on the wiki
2- Check JIRA for similar issues and enter a new JIRA ticket if there is not
one already
3-Code it yourself and submit a patch
4-Ask some folks at Shapeblue, CloudOps, or on sites like freelancer to do it
for you.

As far as I know the video you saw was a demo of a proprietary solution from
citrix. That probably means that a citrix customer asked and paid for that
feature and they worked on it. Now if there was a way to get that feature in
CloudStack, we would need to go through some hoops on intellectual property
clearance and then we would have an unmaintained feature because the developer
who did that has moved on.

All that said, and I am not a DR expert. One of the premise of cloud is
on-demand elastic provisioning. You should have configuration management
recipes to deploy your entire application stack. That stack should be agnostic
of cloud providers, be it your private or public clouds. And you should have a
scheme in place to switch endpoint for your apps in a heartbeat with some kind
of data replication (cassandra, riak…)

So to recap, pragmatic steps:

1-Create a wiki page (you need an account and then I can give you edit
privileges) and write the feature spec:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/
2- Create a JIRA ticket:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK
3-Edit the roadmap with that wish:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Roadmap

I put the user-data into a file with my generated token and then convert it

deploy virtualmachine -userdata=base64stringFromAbove -name core01 -(other

deploy virtualmachine -userdata=base64stringFromAbove -name core02 -(other

thing is to get a fresh discovery token and re-deploy all of the VMs. It
does not seem to be easy to clear a 'failed' record from the discovery

[ANNOUNCE] No more Review Board for new contribution moving to GitHub

2015-04-17 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Morning All,

After discussion [1], we decided to stop using review board to receive
contributions from non-committers.
Starting now, we accept contributions only through GitHub pull request. (Even
though you can also attach a patch to a JIRA ticket).

A large number of projects use GitHub and we believe it is easier to submit new
contribution that way, as well as enter reviews and get more visibility to the
patches.

The website contribution instructions have been updated [2] and a complete step
by step guide is available [3].

Cheers,

PS: The left over reviews in RB are still visible but are in discarded state.

CCC Dublin 2015 October 7-8

2015-04-01 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi folks,

After getting feedback couple weeks ago on the cloudstack days, Karen Vuong,
Giles and a couple others who volunteered to help discussed with the Linux
foundation who is organizing the event.

We are going to take a bit of a gamble, cancel the event in Budapest and make
Dublin a two day event , collocated with linuxcon. We might also try to
organize a unconference off-site after the 2 days.

We will re-brand, CloudStack days Dublin: CloudStack Collaboration Conference
Europe.

To make this happen, we will need to raise an additional $10k

Citrix, Shapeblue and Nuage Networks have already stepped in and sponsored the
event (and some of the other ones as well, if not all).

So potential sponsors listening on this list, you are welcome to jump in and
help us make CCC Europe happen again, back by popular demand.

Thoughts on CloudStack while starting as new VP

2015-03-23 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Dear members of the CloudStack community,

Last week the Apache Software Foundation board unanimously voted a resolution
to make me the new VP of Apache CloudStack. This came after a unanimous vote of
the CloudStack PMC and is regular process of our community as described in our
bylaws.

I am excited to take on this new role after two amazing VP (Chip and Hugo)
since CloudStack came to the ASF. Many thanks to them and especially Hugo for
the work he has done in the past year.

The ASF is setup so that the governance of a project really belongs to the
community itself. CloudStack is what we all make it to be, we all have equal
footing when time comes to develop the code, create events, take decisions and
so on. As VP I do not have a special say in our direction. This governance
model is in stark contrast with other open source project that follow more of a
benevolent dictator model. I mention this as a bit of disclaimer and to
re-enforce the fact that while I have views about what we should do, they are
my personal views and that they do not represent any sorts of official
roadmaps, and that anyone is welcome to disagree :)

In Budapest, we had a great conference. Chip and I showed several CloudStack
use cases. Our user base is strong with over 300 production deployments. Our
community is large and diverse with 2000 people on the mailing lists, but we
need to keep advocating for CloudStack, make it an even greater software and
grow our community. At the very least this helps us learn from each other,
better our own skills and our employers IT infrastructure. At the very best AWS
switches to CloudStack :)

So here are some food for thoughts that will hopefully excite you, want to get
engage, talk about CloudStack and bring on board your friends:

On the code:
-
- Keep improving quality, remove dead code, cleanup JIRA, cleanup Review Board
We have successfully moved to GitHub pull requests, we should stop using RB
- Simplify the dev process and adopt a new committing system to avoid
regressions at all costs.
We have talked about this for a long time but have failed had doing something
concrete. It is time.
- Remove the AWSAPI (there is a branch without it right now), we should merge
it in master
I am going to push for IP clearance of ec2stack and gstack to get them under
ASF governance.
- Several Cloud Providers have unveiled new CloudStack UI, maybe it’s time we
do the same.
- Solidify the testing infrastructure, keep Jenkins builds running
- Brainstorm on the future of CloudStack and IaaS in general. What should
CloudStack be in 10 years ?
While CloudStack is what it is now, nothing prevents us to re-architect,
re-think, re-code it within the current framework.
- Finally, package the mgt server and the KVM agent as Docker containers
Docker is a great portability mechanism. We should embrace Docker as a
packaging tool (first) and provide container images for our mgt server (at a
minimum).
This could become a type of release artifact that could be easily continuously
built.

On the ecosystem:
-
We have a really strong ecosystem. From configuration management tools, API
wrappers, PaaS plugins etc.
We need to feature our ecosystem clearly on our website, support it and keep on
growing it as new technologies emerge.

Things that come to mind:
- Push to get our Ansible module into the Ansible core
- Publish “official” chef recipes to deploy CloudStack
- Identify and publish “official” Puppet recipes
- Build Docker native templates (coreOS, rancherOS, Snappy, Atomic)
- Finally cleanup cloud-init support for CloudStack, this is preventing us from
having upstream centOS templates.
- Publish playbooks/recipes to deploy workloads on CloudStack (think Hadoop,
Spark, Kubernetes)
- Work actively on up to date integration with CloudFoundry

On documentation:
-
I and couple others successfully moved our docs to the Read The Docs service.
This was a first great move but we need to finish the job.
We need to rethink our documentation tree, maybe merge all guides in one,
correct the docs, create a new theme for it.
This is an easy area to contribute to if you are using cloudstack. Just send a
pull request (click on the top right ribbon).
If you don’t know how, then it will teach you how to use github, great exercise.
We also need to routinely build the multi languages support.

On Events:
-
We have at least four great events coming in 2015. Austin, Seattle, Tokyo and
Dublin.
Let’s meet at one of those events.
Let’s submit a talk or a poster, tell everyone about the great stuff you are
doing with CloudStack.
If you are in a position at your company to sponsor the event, please do, we
need your help to make those great events.
Open Source is about collaboration and sharing, so let’s meet around the globe
from Sao Paulo to Dublin to Tokyo and talk Cloud, DevOps and Docker :)

2015-03-05 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi,

The website has been bugging me greatly, it's not up to par with today's
website and does not portray our project in a good way.

I decided to try something quick. I created a gh-pages branch in our repo,
orphaned from the rest of the code based and pushed that.
It shows up on github due to the mirroring:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/tree/gh-pages

And it builds:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/tree/gh-pages

I believe that's nice, it allows us to keep the website under ASF root repo but
the mirroring allows us to use github pages.
That means we can take pull requests to build our website instead of using svn
or the apache CMS.

Any amazing web designer on these lists who wants to take a crack at a modern
design for cloudstack ?

thanks,

[EVENTS] CloudStack days in 2015

2015-02-27 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Morning folks,

After discussions on dev@ and marketing@ , it was decided to split the CCC
conferences into more one day events that span the glob.
Planning a 3 day event like CCC is a big task and we all thought it would be
easier to do one day event that we can repeat more often and in different
locations.

There recently was already a very successful CloudStack day Brazil with over
200 people attending.
http://cloudstackday.com.br

For the rest of 2015 we already have dates for five events:

http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/cloudstack-austin

http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/cloudstack-seattle
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/cloudstack-budapest

 Osay,

You need to check the documentation on how to install your ssh keys
 into the
template. Once you've done this, you should be able to login with ssh
 keys.
I've done this once about 6 months back and it worked perfectly well.

I think the coreos is works much better with openstack as it
 integrates well
with the environment and automatically get's the user keys from
 openstack. So,
you don't have to mess about the recreating the template. I think
 similar is
done for major cloud providers like amazon and rackspace, etc.

 Hi all,

Any news on progress with the docker container support for ACS? I've seen
a few articles on how to install CoreOS on ACS and thence docker as well as
the wish list for docker containers to be supported in ACS like LXC but I
was wondering when this'll become a reality. Also seen mentioned elsewhere
that Exoscale has docker templates? Would be nice if this can go to market
 sooner.

The docker templates in exoscale are CoreOS templates which anyone can
install on their cloudstack setup from:

http://stable.release.core-os.net/amd64-usr/current/

Note that Docker can be installed on ubuntu or centOS with close to a one line
bash script passed as userdata…

I am of the opinion that supporting docker as a hypervisor type in ACS (like
LXC) is not the right way to do it.

Docker is more like a workload. You start a cluster of docker hosts on
CloudStack and then use all the Docker ecosystem to manage your containers.

And as Nux mentioned there are two pull requests in the Docker machine feature
to add cloudstack driver. That means that from Docker you will be able to start
an instance on an ACS cloud and use the docker cli form your local machine. It
also means that we will see Docker swarm support CloudStack as well really
soon. We are better off making sure that a cloudstack driver works well in
machine and swarm that spend time adding a docker hypervisor in cloudstack.

Any ideas on how we can actually implement this and also people may not even
remember the names of these args and they may want autocompletion for that as
well? Right now with autocompletion enabled (set paramcompletion true), one
can easily tab tab on an arg that is of uuid, boolean (and a special case
account param) type and cloudmonkey lists uuids with names so one can pick a
 uuid for a suitable name.

If we want to do autocompletion of names and which then translate to uuids is
sort of doable but it will require a lot of background list API calls and a
translation layer which can slow down cloudmonkey, and there is a corner case
that an entity got removed and the name to uuid translation layer in
cloudmonkey won’t know which uuid to pick and fail (few people may find it
 alright).

no idea how to implement it :) I have not looked at the code in a long time.

That's just a feature request, maybe it's not a good one.

+1 for what Nux said - freezing new development for CloudStack and
 polishing new stuff.

We already discussed this during CCCEU14, and I really think this should be
priority - but discussion during CCCEU14 and really doing it as discused
are 2 different things, hoping developers will align to the goals...
Because, I understand that some developers want to work on new features,
and that fixing bugs and improving current stuff is more boring - but it
makes no sense to me to make new stuff without current one not working good
 in some areas.

In my opinion we are making a mistake in our community in splitting the users
and the developers.

There seems to be a thinking that only folks that are on the dev list can
actually fix the code, docs etc.

Anyone can, this is open source at the Apache Software Foundation.

Anyone can join the dev@ list and help there, also you don't need to be on the
dev list to submit patches, submit bugs , correct the docs.

There is no such thing as the devs and the users.

When we ask for things to be fixed, we can fix it ourselves. The problem like
in any open source software is that CloudStack as a project does not have
developers on staff that can fix things on-demand. We are very much dependent
on whoever works on the code to fix things.

In JIRA there is a way to vote for issues.

So what I suggest is that everyone takes a bit of time, to vote on their top 5
issues, once we have significant amount of votes we can publicize amongst
ourselves and see who will have time and knowledge to be able to fix them.

It is in fact extremely easy to deploy.. and simple to configure as

In my personal view, I wish ACS stopped completely development on
new features for a while and made the current features rock solid.

I know we need new features to keep developers happy who would
otherwise slit their veins from boredom, but I personally do not care
that much for S3 compatibility or SDN or what not. When my deployment
will be large enough to need that I'll probably have enough money to
develop them myself (and contribute them back).

Most people do not need FreeIPA or who knows what other bells and
 whistles.
I do like Openstack, I know like some people involved with it and
I use(d) it (was even a mod on the RDO forum), but I don't want the
bloody kitchen sink in my servers. I want peace of mind and reliable
services for my customers who also don't give a rat's arse about said
features; all they want is their application or site to work 24/7.

Personally I want everything that we have NOW fixed, polished; usage
stats working (with SG zones), proper backup and restore of volumes,
security groups finalised (hello IPv6, it's almost 2015!), no silly
GUI mistakes or typos in new releases and so on.

Competing with Openstack head on is a dead end, stop chasing!
Everybody pushes all sorts of stuff into it which takes a lot of time,
effort and money to get working, if at all.
Average Joe will not use that in production, just like he won't use
Gentoo, Fedora or Archlinux in production, it sucks; you use battle
tested stuff like CentOS or Ubuntu LTS.

For Average IT manager Joe to be capable of using Openstack in
production companies like Mirantis or eNovance need to take their
time, freeze it, slow it the fsck down, polish it, decide which
features can't be used actually (many, I bet!), package it in a sexy
wrapping and then put it up for sale (or download).

Basically they'll have to build a Cloudstack. We're already there!
 Sort of ... :-)

 vendors?

Short answer: no

You are probably looking for an application level decision. For example you
could load-balance between instances in different clouds.

What I believe people do is that they automate their instance/application
provisioning so that they can deploy instantly in their cloud of choice,
coupled with things like load balancing and global DNS you have very resilient
apps across clouds and geos.

You might consider cold migration among clouds as a re-provisioning of an
instance. Think how much time it takes to transfer a 20 GB image versus
restarting from scratch.

it includes template urls for supported hypervisors.

it's:

http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/projects/cloudstack-installation/en/4.3/installation.html#prepare-the-system-vm-template

note that 4.3 in the url.

/en/latest will always point to the latest docs version which would correspond
to the latest released clodustack version.

Amogh is right about the small v at the bottom left in green, if you click on

[EVENT] CCC EU Poster Session

2014-08-20 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Morning folks,

The schedule for the CloudStack conference in Budapest Nov 19-21 has been
published and looks great:

http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/cloudstack-collaboration-conference-europe/program/schedule

We received several inquiries about the Global Poster Session, asking what it
was.

The poster session will close the conference on the Friday afternoon. It will
bring everybody back into the main auditorium for some informal presentation.
Imagine a booth crawl, but instead of booth you have the speakers setup around
the room an standing by an easel/board with their printed slides displayed on
the board. Attendees walk around, check out the posters and stop for questions,
chatting with the presenter. All posters are displayed in the room at the same
time.

It should be fun, very interactive and a way to showcase your work in a less
formal manner than a presentation in front of a seated audience.

Hope to see you there,

Cheers,

-Sebastien

I am on 4.4 on one of my setups and was wondering if anyone had any
 comments/thoughts on these two options.

 thanks,
 Carlos

Carlos,

I was part of the project that wrote ec2stack with Darren and Ian in cc.

ec2stack is a python application using Flask micro framework to expose the ec2
query API. It is uncoupled from cloudstack and can run on the mgt server or
even on your local machine.
You might want to check this short tutorial: http://codac.co/ec2/README.html

The github page also has docs:
https://github.com/BroganD1993/ec2stack
https://github.com/BroganD1993/ec2stack/wiki/User-Guide

It is mostly aimed at supporting basic zones, but also has support for VPC
since 3 weeks ago.

IMHO it is easier to maintain/extend and a much smaller code footprint. Right
now it is not an official cloudstack release even though Darren, Ian and I are
part of cloudstack community. We might put it under ASF governance if there is
interest in it.

Awsapi has you know is strongly tied to cloudstack and the app comes bundled in
the source and in the package repo. It is java based and built dynamically from
the AWS wsdl. other than that since it's Java I don't know much about it. My
personal opinion is that very people in the community know about its internals
and it has proven difficult to maintain plus package properly. So I prefer
ec2stack mostly because I know how it's written and that it is decoupled from
cloudstack.

Would be great to have you try ec2stack and give us some feedback, either on
this list or on the github page.

Cheers,

-Sebastien

What the ArchipelProject is looking for?

No idea, I have never used it, but looks like they use xmpp for virtual

Check out archipelprojet, head to scholar.google.com , do some research,

write some code with xmpp, install ejabberd.

What I do think is that XMPP is cool and highly scalable, so it can be
used as a communication protocol for distributed systems, especially one
 where the agents are transients.

Should this conversation be moved to d...@cloudstack.apache.org?

Yes please, can you send a note to dev@ with the issue.

My organization uses Zenoss as our monitoring solution. We leverage the good,
but horribly documented, API to automate the addition/deletion of new
VM’s/devices. Minimizing the management requirements of the monitoring
solution. Aside from Zenoss, Zabbix, Nagios, and Pandora are all good
choices. Each, has their pro’s and con’s.

You’re always going to face management problems in a public cloud. one quick
and dirty way to ensure easy management would be to enable SNMP polling on
all of your templates and monitor your entire public block. It’s lazy, but it
would minimize the time need to manage new VM’s in your monitoring solution.

I am almost there to having a working config with advanced network on
 vsphere 5.1
So I am using a pretty basic advanced network zone using vlan for isolation.
 Details are below:
 Public range = x.x.233.0/24
 Guest cidr = 10.1.1.0/24
 VLAN range = 400-405

 1. I create an instance of the default centos5.3 template, choosing to
create a isolated network based on
 DefaultIsolatedNetworkOfferingWithSourceNatService
 2. The system spawns a system router.
 3. The system spawns the guest vm.
 4. The router is made a part of the public vlan 233 and the isolated vlan 400
 5. The guest vm is made a part of the isolated vlan 400.
 6. The router is assigned an IP address on the isolated network of 10.1.1.1.
The router is able to get out to the internet fine, and is able to ping the
 guest instance.
 7. The guest is assigned an ip address on the isolated network. The guest vm
is able to ping the router
Network Topology would look as follows:
guestvm --- system router --- firewall --- router --- internet
Up to this point everything LOOKS perfect...BUT...my guest vm is not able to
 get out to the internet.
At first I thought my problem might be with the hop after the system router
which is my firewall. So what I did was to imitate what CS is doing, but
with windows machines. Basically I spawned two machines, one which acted as
a guest vm, the other to act as a system router. On the windows box, which I
simulated the system router, I enabled routing and remote access to enable
NAT. In this configuration the guest vm was able to use the simulated system
router and browse the internet just fine. The test topology would look as
 follows:
guest vm --- simulated router running windows and NAT --- firewall ---
 router --- internet
So this leads me to believe that something is wrong with the system router
and how it is NAT'ing. Up to this point I have tried the default network
 service DefaultIsolatedNetworkOfferingWithSourceNatService and created a
new network offering using DNS,DHCP, and SourceNAT.
I think once I get past this hurdle I will be be good to goany help is
 hugely appreciated!!

 Hi,

I’ve spent a fair bit of lab time trying to get GRE tunnelling working in
CloudStack 4.2.1 / Xenserver 6.1 but have had no luck so far.

As per various posts, documents and wiki articles I’ve got:

 - Xenserver 6.1 cluster with all patches, CloudStack 4.2.1 installed from
 RPMs (CentOS 6.5).
 - Advanced zone configuration (no security groups).
 - Public and management networks configured with VLAN isolation (bonds).
 - sdn.ovs.controller set to “true, sdn.ovs.controller.default.label set
to network label of the guest network.
 - Guest network traffic configured for GRE, IP interfaces configured on
the guest network and “VLAN range” configured.

The problem is tunnels won’t come up, tagged networks are created but no
GRE tunnels are created between XS hosts. Whilst the SSVM and CP come
online the domain router and the first VM fail to start.
Checking the management server logs the root cause seems to point to a
 “createTunnelNetwork failed” error.

Doing a bit more digging I found the following bug logged back in
 September:

 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-4599

 1) Considering the bug above was logged for CS4.1 - is GRE under active
development as per 4.2.1/4.3? Is it considered to be a working component of
 CloudStack?
 2) Has anyone managed to get GRE tunnelling working - if so are there any
patches / workarounds / specific component versions required?

Hi Sam, good to hear you want to take cloudstack for a tour :)

If you want to encapsulate everything (cloudstack management and hypervisor
used to spawn VMs) within a VM.

There are different ways to do this:

DevCloud: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/DevCloud

It's pre-packaged and baring a few caveats, you will get CloudStack running
quickly. However it's a Xen kernel.

If you are a KVM guy: the easiest way to do this would be to use vmware
workstation or fusion to take advantage of hardware virtu. You can then use KVM
directly within the VM and setup CloudStack for testing. You can then follow
this guide:
http://cloudstack.apache.org/docs/en-US/Apache_CloudStack/4.1.1/html/qig/index.html
to setup everything on your own. Someone did it the other day in 20 minutes.

What CS is looking for?? I have Host server installed as Debian +
XCP-XAPI instead on typical XCP1.6 install. Can this be a problem?

Vladim, I did this some time back. xapi setup on debian or ubuntu system is
non-trivial (at least to me), there are lots of little tricks to do:
http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/XAPI_toolstack_on_a_Debian-based_distribution

I'd suggest you go through the wiki page and make sure xapi is setup properly.
I don't think it's a cloudstack issue per se.

I think it's 'apikey' lowercase

if that's not the issue, then check your url encoding of all the strings…

I wrote an example in python.

 Hello,
I have just installed a cloudstack management server and I have problems
 with secondary storage.
I get my first problem when I issued the command to prepare system vm
 template
I discovered that cloud user and cloud database were not present.
Then I discovered that the cloudstack-setup-databases command gave me a
list of ok but it did not install the db.
So I manually run the mysql scripts and the server went up.

I was able to add the same host that runs management server also as host for
 virtual machines without errors.

But now I see that the system vms like ssvm are in state starting and not
UP, and I cannot see templates and isos.

What can I do? Can you please help me?

This tends to happen if you don't have enough ram in your host. Check the
management logs, if you see an error like Unsufficient capacity then RAM may
be your issue.

If you downloaded the source, the service_offering for systemVMs require quite
a bit of RAM. Go in the database and see how much RAM is required:

use cloud;
select * from service_offering;

set the RAM for the console proxy, VR and ssvm to 256….then restart the mgt
server...

 Thanks,
 Mario

 Hi All,

 At this link:
 https://cloudstack.apache.org/docs/en-US/Apache_CloudStack/4.2.0/html/Installation_Guide/management-server-install-flow.html

The command for installing the management server for Ubuntu is spelt
incorrectly, make sure you spell management correctly if you are copying and
 pasting from the guide.

If someone could spend the 20 seconds updating the guide, even better.

Thanks for the information. Does anyone know of the best way to migrate from
nfs secondary storage to S3? At the moment, my NFS storage is used for
storing templates, including system vm templates. Is it safe for me to remove
it and create the new S3 secondary storage? Would it copy systemvm templates
onto a new storage automatically or do I have to manually do that? If so, how
would I copy the systemvm template onto a non-NFS storage?

 Many thanks

That means one of the zones in your setup may be having NFS as the secondary
storage provider. Make sure that none of the zones use NFS for secondary
storage if you want to use S3 .

 Hello guys,

I am trying to add a new secondary storage provided by Ceph's S3 radosgw,
which i've configured and tested. Right after adding it via the GUI I have
 the following message/error:

You can only add new image stores from the same provider NFS already added

Does anyone know what this message means? I am a bit confused here as I am
not adding the NFS secondary storage, but instead adding the S3 storage.

 Cheers
