[libreoffice-users] Endnote X4 OpenOffice Extension does not work

Hi,
Upon trying to add the "Cite While You Write" Endnote OpenOffice
Extension to the latest LibreOffice an error is displayed: "The
extension 'Endonte Cite While You Write' does not work on this
computer". I have contacted the support team for Endnote to explain
the existence of LibreOffice and the need for compatibility but am
wondering if there's anything I can do in the mean time to get the
OpenOffice extension to work?

There's also an option to Browse for your own choice of program. You
can use this to poke around anywhere on your computer to find the LO
launcher. It helps to look at everything in the windows that open (I
know, I miss them all the time and have to look twice, too).

No, you have to do a little more work this way on the first such
entity (because you actually have to type in the command), but then if
you copy taht to the clipboard, you can paste it in subsequent file
types.

I have no idea what that means - if it's installed, the executable is
out there somewhere. Any menu that contains a link to launch the
installed programs can be open with right-click->Properties, and you
can see what's inside that makes it tick. At the very least, the All
Programs menu will have it (if not, you don't have it installed...).

It is *not* rare. In fact it is common. Please see:

and particularly:

That is why there is a release note regarding this issue:

I suggest that you've not actually installed and tested OOo and LO on a

not continue to advise that OOo and LO easily coexist together on a

Re: Re: offlist [libreoffice-users] Icons changed in OOo after LO 3.3.1 install.

2011-02-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

Yes, ZenWiz's description is much more accurate than mine for Windows. Usually
the "dozens of different file types" is really mainly only 3 or so for most
users. Installers usually end with a tick-box option to grab all possible
file-types so that's the easiest way to get them all (including the rare ones).

Tom :)

The installation instructions for OOo4Kids say that you can have OOo4Kids and
OOo on the same machine, but only one program will get the "file associations"
that enable you to double-click on a document to open Writer, Calc, or
whatever.
Presumably we can go whole hog and install OOo4Kids, OOoLite, OOo, LibO,
BrOffice, etc., on one machine, but only one of these automatically gets the
file associations. Each suite steals all the associations (except for MS Word,
Excel and Powerpoint if you reserved those). Therefore the last one installed
rules the roost.

When you think about it, this is the Right Way for it to work.

ZenWiz's method works, but there are dozens of file types involved, and you may
have to do it over again after an update or upgrade. It is simpler, and perhaps
faster, to re-install the one you want to have the file associations.

Have fun!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc trumps Excel

2011-02-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

If you type any number that is too long for a cell then it usually just fills
the cell with marks. Words will generally overlap other cells unless
those
cells and then the writing gets truncated but you see the first few letters. I
can't test the "now()" function until Thursday unless i get a call-out before
then.

I tend to think that most programs are not "good" or "bad". Generally there
are
certain circumstances that fit some programs better than others. MS products
are heavy and only recently been ported to systems other than reasonably new
desktop machines running Windows. LibreOffice runs on at least 4 operating
systems (counting all linux distros as 1 and all BSDs as another 1) and a much
wider variety of machines of various ages, sizes and types.

Para: users@libreoffice.org

Asunto: Re: Re: [libreoffice-users] [LO 3.3.1] Crash upon update extension --
EMULATE FIREFOX!

In my experience this problem has existed for years in OOo.

In OOo, I select Help \ Check for update, and OOo *always* reports "update
failed". This happens even when there is a newer stable release on the download
page. In LibO 3.3.x Help \ Check for update tool is missing altogether -- I
take

this as an admission that it was buggy and will be fixed by the by.

In OOo, I select Tools \ Extension Manager \ Check for Updates. Half the time
OOo reports "update failed". When it did show a list of updates, sometimes they
came down, sometimes they did not. In LibO 3.3.x, Tools \ Extension Manager \
Check for updates *always* causes LibO to crash, with an offer to save the open
documents. (Usually I update with no open documents -- why tempt evil gods?)

So the LibO developers have their work cut out on the whole update mess. If I
can put my two cents in, I would prioritize it this way:

1. Make sure that update checking actually identifies whether updates are
available. If so, offer to link to the update page for manual downloading and
installing (which is better than crashing). If not, report that.

2. When that works dependably, the update checker should download the update
package and offer to install manually.

3. Make an option in the Tools \ Options box for automatic notification of
updates. The notice should provide you with a button to download and install.
This way you will usually learn about an update the first time you open LibO
after an update is posted.

4. The option in the Tools \ Options box should allow the option for
downloading

in the background. When the download is ready, A dialog should appear with a
button to install the update.

5. At least for updates and minor upgrades, you should download just the
changed

files, Registry entries, settings, etc. This will greatly decrease your
bandwidth requirements, saving money for TDF and time for us users.

Emulate the Firefox update system! Get someone from Mozilla to help.

These changes will help users keep their LibO up-to-date and bug-free. As you
increase use of Java and VBA, it will help fight malware. It will also help to
distinguish LibO from OOo.

For others:
Note that the macro recorder seems to be an experimental feature. So you

I tried to install 1.6.22 from the debs, but I kept getting a broken

I removed the Partners software source (only unchecked it), removed

I don't know whether the bug is in Java or Libreoffice (and OOo as

have a database with about 2400 records. The form opens a little
bit slowly. But the BIG problem is if I try to go to the end of the
database in the form once it opens, it takes anywhere from 30 to 60
seconds depending on the speed of the computer. I thought it might
be a java issue, so in tools/options/java I checked my java
versions. I had the most recent one from Ubuntu, which is 1.6.0_24,
and it also showed 1.6.0_20 was installed. 1.6.0_24 was the one

the same issue. I then deleted Iced Tea, and the older version of
java, 1.6.0_20, so that the only java on my one system is 1.6.0_24.
Nothing I did made any difference to resolve this issue. The
database worked perfectly in 3.3.0 on all of the computers.

Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. The
database is very important in my work, and it is almost unusable in
this version.

Re: Re: offlist [libreoffice-users] Icons changed in OOo after LO 3.3.1 install.

2011-02-26 Thread Eli
The installation instructions for OOo4Kids say that you can have
OOo4Kids and OOo on the same machine, but only one program will get the
"file associations" that enable you to double-click on a document to
open Writer, Calc, or whatever. Presumably we can go whole hog and
install OOo4Kids, OOoLite, OOo, LibO, BrOffice, etc., on one machine,
but only one of these automatically gets the file associations. Each
suite steals all the associations (except for MS Word, Excel and
Powerpoint if you reserved those). Therefore the last one installed
rules the roost.

When you think about it, this is the Right Way for it to work.

ZenWiz's method works, but there are dozens of file types involved, and
you may have to do it over again after an update or upgrade. It is
simpler, and perhaps faster, to re-install the one you want to have the
file associations.

Have fun!

Two possible solutions (in Windows Explorer):

1) Right-click on a file of the type you want to move from default OO
to LO, select "Open With" and "Choose Program..." then select LO and
be sure to check the box "Always use this program"

2) Click "Tools" and "Folder options...", then click on the "File
Types" tab, find your way to the file type(s) you want to change and
set all of them there.

There's also a way to do this from the Control Panel, but I forget that one.

No problem here. I do have OOo 3.3.0 (either final or one of the last
RCs) and have installed LibreOffice 3.0 without any problems. I upgraded
one to LO 3.3.1 without any problems too. All this on two Windows 7
64-bit systems and on one Windows XP system. QuickStart is off on all
machines and had been throughout all installation, and I think the key
point.

One problematic aspect, at least on Windows, is that OpenOffice turns on
QuickStart by default. So the unsuspecting user may try to install
LibreOffice on a machine that has QuickStart on, and then run into issues.

Until LibreOffice uses different application names for all its internal
modules (it it ever happens), would it be possible to modify the
installer so that it either:

– stops all versions of QuickStart (LO and OOo) before installation,
– puts a warning message asking the user to stop QuickStart before
proceeding?

[libreoffice-users] UPDATE - writer2latex and java errors on LO 3.3.1 on OSX 10.6

2011-02-26 Thread Marc Grober
I have subsequently gone back in and returned the entry to
Apple Inc. (from Apple Computer Inc.) - Now I can install new oxt files,
the zotero plugin still works, but I still cannot remove the zip file
from the listing.

Now I have the export features that writer2latex offers, but I can't
delete the zip -

so what is the story about integrating into core the writer2 features?

*
In moving to LO3.3 I understood that writer2latex would be incorporated,
but the export options on OSX that would be available are not included
(in fact there are only two export format options as compared to the
extensive list I am used to under OOo)

In any event, I had changed the java tag in my OSX 3.3
installation so that zotero plugin worked (it still works under 3.3.1)
and then upgraded via overlay install to 3.3.1

I then download the current extension package for writer2latex and
mistakenly added its zip to LO (as I recall this feature - adding from
zip as opposed to oxt - worked in OOo) however, apparently the zip is
not just a zip of an oxt and at this point a) I can't remove that zip
from the extension manager, and b) I now get a java error when trying to
add the oxt files ([Java framework] Error in function getPluginLibrary

Newer installs show up as in extension manager but not working and they
can be removed, but I can't fully install any oxt files and the
writer2latex zip still can't be removed

Can someone tell me what I can do to manually delete and rebuild the
listing or otherwise clean the extension list, and resolve the java
error b arring the install of new oxt files...

Re: Re: [libreoffice-users] [LO 3.3.1] Crash upon update extension -- EMULATE FIREFOX!

2011-02-26 Thread Eli

In my experience this problem has existed for years in OOo.

In OOo, I select Help \ Check for update, and OOo *always* reports
"update failed". This happens even when there is a newer stable release
on the download page. In LibO 3.3.x Help \ Check for update tool is
missing altogether -- I take this as an admission that it was buggy and
will be fixed by the by.

In OOo, I select Tools \ Extension Manager \ Check for Updates. Half the
time OOo reports "update failed". When it did show a list of updates,
sometimes they came down, sometimes they did not. In LibO 3.3.x, Tools \
Extension Manager \ Check for updates *always* causes LibO to crash,
with an offer to save the open documents. (Usually I update with no open
documents -- why tempt evil gods?)

So the LibO developers have their work cut out on the whole update mess.
If I can put my two cents in, I would prioritize it this way:

1. Make sure that update checking actually identifies whether updates
are available. If so, offer to link to the update page for manual
downloading and installing (which is better than crashing). If not,
report that.

2. When that works dependably, the update checker should download the
update package and offer to install manually.

3. Make an option in the Tools \ Options box for automatic notification
of updates. The notice should provide you with a button to download and
install. This way you will usually learn about an update the first time
you open LibO after an update is posted.

4. The option in the Tools \ Options box should allow the option for
downloading in the background. When the download is ready, A dialog
should appear with a button to install the update.

5. At least for updates and minor upgrades, you should download just the
changed files, Registry entries, settings, etc. This will greatly
decrease your bandwidth requirements, saving money for TDF and time for
us users.

Emulate the Firefox update system! Get someone from Mozilla to help.

These changes will help users keep their LibO up-to-date and bug-free.
As you increase use of Java and VBA, it will help fight malware. It will
also help to distinguish LibO from OOo.

It changes from 'number' to 'date'

That doesn't make any sense, does it? The format of the values depends on the
width of the cell???

There are only two logical options: 1) the cell width is automatically
adjusted to show the whole data (as Excel does) or 2) the data is correctly
formatted (in this case in the DATE TIME format) and only part is shown
(depending on the width of the column). The user must manually adjust the
column width.

Hi :)

I think there is some mis-understanding of the original problem or something.
Neither Excel nor Calc automatically adjust column-width unless you
deliberately
take action. There are a lot of actions that can change widths but for the
result described the easiest would be to double-click on the | dividing columns
up above the data.

Tom :)

With Ubuntu, even if LibreOffice was the resent installed package that used
those document formats as their default, until I either removed OOo or I use
"right-click/open with" option, it will default to OOo. Since I no longer use
OOo, I removed it off my computer. I know there is a way to change the default
programs that launch the individual file formats, but I do not remember what it
is. Maybe you will have to do a similar "open with" option to choose which
program you need, but maybe you will have to link it directly to the "Program"
folder's .exe files for Writer, Calc, Impress, etc..

This may be needed every time you add another package that uses the ODF
formats,
but hopefully with Windows you will not need to do it after you install an
upgrade to LibreOffice and already have the default launching programs set for
LibreOffice.

Hi :)
In almost all operating systems (just excluding Mac) you can change the default
program that opens specific formats of documents by finding one of those
documents and right-click.

The first "Open with ..." you can see directly in the right-click menu only
affects the current opening this time but leaves the default unchanged. Go
down
to "Properties" at the bottom of the right-click menu and find the deeper "Open
with ..." in there to change the default.

Once the default is changed then simply double-clicking on that format will
open
document in the newly selected program but "Open with ..." still appears in the
right-click menu and now it will offer more intelligent programs first without
you needing to dig around so deeply for the right ones.

Certain files will still try to open with the previous program because even
files with the same extension (such as ".doc") might still be a slightly
different format. So, you might have to repeat the process 2 or 3 times
although the 1st time you do this will have covered perhaps 95% of the
documents
you normally use.

Uninstalling the program you don't want to use any more (at least for a while)
does shift the default for all appropriate formats. Very very rarely i have
had
a machine misbehave a bit but convincing it using the above method nudges it
back into behaving on those rare exceptions.

In Windows uninstalling a program tends to leave traces of the program laying
around in various places but there is no safe way of removing all traces.
"Registry Cleaners" tend to be malware or can cause unexpected problems and
reinstalling Windows is likely to lose valued data and documents.

The main problem with uninstalling programs in Windows is if you ever need to
re-install them. Finding the licence/product key/code and the "proper" Cd/dvd
to install from is all very difficult. However, OpenOffice and LibreOffice are
both free and can be installed from a variety of media including over the
internet so it is not the worry that most Windows programs are. Just uninstall
and re-install later if required :)

Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Problem with Base in 3.3.1

2011-02-26 Thread cscj01
Don,

As I mentioned earlier, if you add the source(s) I mentioned , I think
you'll get a version of Sun Java that works, namely 1.6.0_21. I can say for
sure that 1.6.0_20 does not work. That is when my performance problems
started in OOo, and I'm sure they will be there in LO because so much of the
code is common at this point. When I upgraded to 1.6.0_22, the problems
went away (see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1642858). So
you either need 1.6.0_21 or 1.6.0_22. I tried unsuccessfully to install
1.6.0_22 from the debs (see here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694448).

If you refresh your sources with Partners still a source, you will only get
1.6.0_24. However, if you remove Partners as a source and add the PPA in my
previous post, you will get 1.6.0_21. You should use Synaptic to completely
remove sun-java6-bin and sun-java6-jre before installing sun-java6-bin from
the PPA.

So, do the following:
(1) Un-install sun-java6-bin;
(2) remove Partners as a source;
(3) add the following two lines to your software sources:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/sun-java-community-team/sun-java6/ubuntu
Maverick Main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/sun-java-community-team/sun-java6/ubuntu
Maverick Main
(4) install sun-java6-bin.

You should now have version 1.6.0_21

But if you make the column wider, it changes the '40600,48653' to
'26-02-11 11:40'.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc trumps Excel

2011-02-26 Thread plino
T.R. Valentine

When you open a tab delimited file in Excel it automatically recognizes the
data types. Therefore your string e.g. 2011-02-26 10:23:47 is correctly
interpreted as a value. Therefore it is natural that using FIND, VALUE, LEFT
or any other functions would not work.

As I said in the previous post you need to use other functions.

LibO and OOo don't have any problem with tab delimited files. The only
difference is that you can not Open a tab delimited file (otherwise it is
loaded in Writer). You need to Insert, Sheet from File.

Luuk

Indeed there is a lot of work... I just found another bug: typing =now() in
a cell shows the value instead of a date (of course you can format it
yourself...)

This seems to be correct, however

1)  A2  '=NOW()'
2) B2 '=FIND(" ";A2;1)'
This gives problems, because the second parameter in FIND needs to be text.
The correct way to find the " " would be:
  '=FIND(" ";TEXT(A2;"DD-MM- UU:MM:SS";1);1)'

The "DD-MM- UU:MM:SS" is because my locale setting is Dutch

Hmz, what happens if i save this, change locate, and re-open this

Yes, Mr Valentine, you are right, there is a lot of work to be
done... :'(
I Think this should be filed as a bug, wonder how OO does do this.

No, I think this is a bug. If you update the data source file, in this
case your CSV file, it should also update the data available for the
merge next time around. I seem to recall that this may already have been
filed as a bug report, but for an SQL statement as a datasource instead
of a CSV file.

I have seen the slowness problem mentioned on two other lists now and
the apparent solution is to go back to 1.6.0_22 or earlier.

The 24 update only came through recently, since I update one of my
Ubuntu machines fairly regularly and it was installed this week, but I
haven't had a chance to see whether this will affect any of my existing
ODB files.

If you try typing in "java -version" in a terminal, what does it say ?
That will give you an idea of the JVM that is actually installed and
thereby point to the name of the packet. It may be that you have IcedTea
as a JVM instead of Sun JVM, or even OpenJDK.

Refreshing your repositories using synaptic will simply update the list
of available packets with the latest version, so finding an older JDK
through that is going to be hard to do. Either you have to find a
repository on the net that has the older version, and add that as a
software source, or you will have to download a package for the
particular version you want and install that (with whatever installation
mechanism they propose - installation script, dpkg -i, apt-get install
if it is a Ubuntu package, alien if RPM, etc). The problem is that you
will have to make sure that your regular system updates do not overwrite
the installed java version with another more recent one that may cause
the issue again, which, as an aside issue, will leave you vulnerable to
hacking exploits. Damned if you, damned if you don't - catch 22 !!
