Ok, if a macro would work, I'll just need some information from you so
I can make it fit your needs.

I think for a start, please upload an example of what you want. I
assume you have some specific reason for wanting this kind of insert
feature. If I can get a sample of a file where you want this feature
in, I'll know a little better how it should work.

Unfortunately, this mailing list does not support attachments (they'll
get removed), so you'll need to upload it to the internet (or email me
directly). If you don't have a preferred upload site, you could use
www.2shared.com (you don't need to register or anything). Then just
let us know what the URL (web address) is of the file you uploaded
(the upload website will give that to you). Just make sure that you
don't include any sensitive or personal information in the file, as it
will be available to anyone on the internet.

Regards
Stephan

Lyx isn't sufficiently stable, either. I'm really surprised that anyone
would entrust documents that are large or would take much effort to
reproduce a WYSIWYG word processing software. Besides that emacs (or,
if you can't avoid it, Lyx) and LaTeX are much better tools for this,
they are sufficiently stable and have the added benefit that you can
still use your documents with arbitrary text editors. WYSIWYG word
processors come and go over time, disappearing much faster than emacs
and LaTeX ...

Since you don't seem to have had much help from the users list and since

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Impress, Master Slides and Custom Animations

Hi,
I have an extremely urgent support request!
I need to create a presentation by Friday. I have selected the template, the
elements etc. But, I have to add transition between each text Outlines and
each page. It's very easy to add page transition effects. But, so far I have
not managed to add automatic custom effect in text transitions (with click).
For example, let's say that I have in page the following format:

Text 1
Text 2
Text 3

I want to present the elements as
Text 1, then I click the mouse, Text 2 click the mount Text 3 etc.
In MS PowerPoint this is done via Master pages.
I tried the same on LO 3.3:
Edit the Slide Master, modified the fonts etc. Then, I tried to add a custom
animation in each element
But with no success.
First of all, it seems that any effect is named: Outline Text 1: Click to...
Second: Even If I accept the fact than there seems to be no way to add an
effect for Outline 2 etc, I save and show the presentation. But, instead of
a page transition then a blank page that requires a click from me to present
the 1st element, I see ALL elements.

So, is it possible to do that in LO?

Well, after all, it seems that it is not possible in OO 3.3, (so, I suppose
in LO 3.3 too), to use the master slide and set the animation of each text
element. Chapter 9, Page 10, it is clear that we cannot do it. Guys, thank
you for your help.

[libreoffice-users] Match cell against any of range of regexes?

2011-06-30 Thread Ryan Jendoubi

Hi all,

Is the operation in the subject line possible?

More info (maybe I'm asking the wrong question):

I have a (long) list of URLs, and want to categorise them. The
categories themselves could be pretty broad: news sites, search engines,
music sites, etc. Similar URLs (different pages on the same site) come
up many times. So what I'd like to do is define regexes to say "If the
URL has 'guardian.co.uk' in it, make it a 'News' site".

Sheet 1 (list to process; I want to insert the categorising function in
col B)

A | B

google.com
cnn.com/foo
guardian.co.uk/foo
duckduckgo.com
cnn.com/bar/baz
bing.com

Sheet 2 (columns of site name regexes; col A is news sites, B is search
engines, etc)

A | B

cnn | google
guardian | duckduckgo
 | bing

The SEARCH function doesn't seem to take a range or array as its findtext.

Any ideas on how to go about this?

Many thanks!

[libreoffice-users] Combining Fields in Base.

2011-06-30 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I'm redesigning my DB in LO Base 3.3.3 and have the following question...

I want to 'link' to the photos, (2 for each record), in place of the
default embedding to help reduce the size of the DB and for this I need
a path to be specified in each record for each photo. In place of typing
in the full path every time I would like to have a fixed "Path to Photo
Folder" field and just put the "Photo's File Name" under each photo. No
problem with this.

BUT the next step has me fooled!! I created another field called"Full
Path To Photo" and need this field to automatically concatenate the
first two values ie "Path to Photo Folder" + "Photo's File Name".

Is this possible and how can I do this?

Thanks

Ian Whitfield

Hi Ryan,
could you possibly upload a sample file to look at? I have a possible
idea of what to do, but I think the best way for me to check would be
by using an example.

As this mailing list does not support attachments, you would need to
upload it to the internet (something like www.2shared.com or similar).
Please remove all personal or sensitive data first.

One problem with RTF is MS has different versions of the specification,
generally released when a new version of MSO comes out. If your software
does not read the newer versions, which I believe is the default for the
latest MSO version you may get garbled importing on occasion.

- make sure either the text frame is selected or one of the lines has
the cursor;

- at the bottom right of the screen, select Custom Animation
- add one to your needs
now there is a window bottom right, listing your outline and the effect
- right click on the line and choose Effect options
- in that window on the tab Tex animation, you can set the desired effect
(and much more)
There are also other paths to this effect/goal.

In MS PowerPoint this is done via Master pages.

Hmm, never tried that :-)

I tried the same on LO 3.3:
Edit the Slide Master, modified the fonts etc. Then, I tried to add a custom
animation in each element
But with no success.

Indeed, I can set it, but it does not have effect on the slides with the
master pages.
SO if you want to apply the same effect very often, 'just' copy either a
frame or a slide ...

So, is it possible to do that in LO?

As explained: yes, but in a different manner.

Thank you very much for the offer (and the upload site tip).

This is set up pretty much how I'd like it to work (without the looong

Oh, so we're moving to "even-numbered releases are development,
odd-numbered releases are stable"? Is that it?

If so, something probably needs to be said about this on the website

Hi :)
There is a yellow warning triangle and exclamation mark ! beside the 3.4.x
series/branch. Also it firmly says "For early adopters only". The 3.3.x
series/branch has a big friendly green tick and words saying that it is the
stable branch. It could be a little bit clearer but i'm not sure how lol ;)
Don't worry, lots of people miss those details too.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Match cell against any of range of regexes?

2011-06-30 Thread jorge
Hi:

I would suggest to do as this (If you have order the information as you
explain and show in your e-mail):

1) Sheet 1:

a) Put "1" (without "") in each search engine but in column B
b) Put "2" (without "") in each information relative to search engine
in column B too.

Something like this:

> Data
> Clasification
> google
> 1
> cnn
> 2
> bin
> 1
> hotmail
> 2
> Sport
> 2
> mamma
> 1

c) Use Automatic Filter (Data Menu) and select all "1" Clasification.
Copy and paste in Sheet 2 in column A. Like This:

> Search Engine
> google
> bin
> mamma

d) Do the same process for "2" and the result copy and paste in Sheet 2
in column B and the final result it could be like this:

> Search Engine
> Information
> google
> cnn
> bin
> hotmail
> mamma
> Sport

I hope you understand me and solve your problem.

Jorge Rodríguez

May I sent you an example document? The texts are in German, but you can
watch what kind of animation is possible for texts. There are some
informations in the associated notes in addition, but again in German.

Kind regards

Well, yes, but "early adopters" doesn't imply "unfinished developer
version". It merely implies "people who want the latest one first
without subsequent bug fixes." The word "final" implies "production
ready". I didn't install 3.4 because the warnings made me look at the
release notes, which led me to believe there are known bugs that would
cause serious problems for my office, but what if I hadn't gotten it
from the website? What if someone had given it to me on a CD merely
labeled "3.4 Final"?

There needs to be some clearer information on the site, and if the
even-numbered release are "development" branches, then there should be
a warning for users when they install those versions, as well.

However there may be some hope for the future. These may be of interest:

My recommendation would be to ask the user what WP or spreadsheet they

[libreoffice-users] file recovery

2011-06-30 Thread John Thaden
New user here, of LibreOffice, trying to recover a document open in Writer when
a Microsoft update auto-rebooted my computer. Reopening Writer, I followed
instructions on a recovery Wizard. An error message flashed on and then a
document appeared, but a very old version of the document. Did I lose the
newer version that was up on my desktop for hours? Doesn't Writer autosave by
default? Should I start trying to recreate it from my head?

P.S. I'm using LibreOffice 3.3.2 OOO330m19 (Build:202) tag libreoffice-3.3.2.2

I truly and completely sympathize with your plight because I myself am
NOT a [C/Java] Application Developer.
When I have a problem with an application, I am at the mercy of the
developer(s) to correctly address the issue.

GOOD NEWS for every wana-be RTF User (and there are more than you think)!
Miklos Vajna claims to have the agenda to correct Libre Office's
implementation of RTF:
For (1) simple but important example of an RTF issue that just should
have NEVER been: see FreeDesktop Bugzilla – Bug 38786 \nofpages \chpgn
ignored and rejected: treated as step children.
This example (bug 38786) is the basis the following quote (Sean Burke in
RTF Pocket Guide): "For no really good reason, support for these RTF
character sets is perfect in some word processors, almost perfect in
others..., and shoddy in others..."

When a software application [claims to have RTF functionality] and has
problems read or writing RTF files (or crashes), the fault is with the
reader/writer (hence application developer(s)) and (NOT / NEVER) the RTF
Specification (see long quote below).

I do NOT expected developers to be perfect and never make mistakes:
that's why we have Bugzilla and not EnhanceZilla.
Tracey
*** Here's a long RTF Specification quote (from June 1992):
Destinations added after the 1987 RTF Specification may be preceded by
the control symbol \* (backslash asterisk). This control symbol
identifies destinations whose related text should be ignored if the RTF
reader does not recognize the destination control word. RTF writers
should follow the convention of using this control symbol when adding
new destinations or groups. Destinations whose related text should be
inserted into the document even if the RTF reader does not recognize the
destination should not use \*.

Writer (or better LibreOffice) can do autosave, but it does not by default. To
activate autosave, go to "Tools > Options > Load/Save > General" and set the
value you want.

I have ticked the box that says "Always create a backup file" and "Save Auto
recovery information every 15 Minutes". (The number can be changed by you).

So in your current situation, I'm afraid, you need to recreate the missing
parts from memory.

Welcome here - though for a sad/mad situation.

Reopening Writer, I followed instructions on
a recovery Wizard. An error message flashed on and then a document
appeared, but a very old version of the document.

Does not sound logic to me...

Did I lose the newer version that was up on
my desktop for hours? Doesn't Writer autosave by default?

Save interval for autorecovery is default at 15 min.
See Tools > Options > Load/save > General

Should I start trying to recreate it from my head?

I have no idea what your computer did with the recovery file. So unless
someone else comes up with better info, I would think you have to do
that yes.

P.S. I'm using LibreOffice 3.3.2 OOO330m19 (Build:202) tag
libreoffice-3.3.2.2 under Windows XP service pack 3.

Thanks for the info. I find no bugs for auto recovery function however:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/query.cgi

Is it something you can reproduce (hmm ask Windows update to do it again
:-\ )

Cor

Hello Sigrid, thank you for the speedy reply!

"Always create a backup file" was not checked, but I see that "Save Auto
recovery information" was. Yet the recovered document was extremely old. I've
now checked the other option -- to back up -- and am trying to recreate my
work. Autorecovery didn't seem to work for some reason.

Thank you again,

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Calc - 3.4 Final version can not open (hyper)links anymore

2011-06-30 Thread beta990
Dear LibreOffice,

I have downloaded the new 3.4 Final version of the new LibreOffice.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit), everything runs, have the PPA in the
repositories.

The only problem I have is that hyperlinks on a Calc sheet are not working
anymore.

I can click on them, but FireFox does not open, when I go back to the
previous version of LibreOffice 3.3.*, I have no problems and the links open
fine in FireFox.

So there is something wrong with the 3.4 Final version.

Hope you can solve this problem. :)

I really like the new LibreOffice 3.4!

Thanks!

It just dawned on me: NO software that I know of claims forward
compatibility (backward yes, but not forward)!
I am NOT a big fan of Microsoft, but your expectation as stated above is
unreasonable.

However, if you want to open/read a document that has the latest RTF
format then I can think of 2 choices:
#1 [Least desirable, but fastest] Download the latest RTF Reader:
msWordViewer (to the best of my knowledge msWordViewer has always been
available free BTW).
#2 [Most desirable, but takes longer] Submit a request to have the RTF
(import/export) utility (fixed/enhanced) (oftentimes the fixed becomes
available as a free down-loadable patch and the enhancement becomes
available in a new release or upgrade).

Again, Just FYI, Tracey

[libreoffice-users] Aack! Uninstall removes file types!

2011-06-30 Thread teknow
Hi,

We have a generic system image with both MS Office and (at my insistence)
LibreOffice. Previously we had the "Go" flavor of OpenOffice. I first
noticed something was wrong when I uninstalled Go-OO and installed LO. I
did not agree to making LO the default handler for MS Office documents
(though I wanted to :p ). Nonetheless, many (but not all) MS Office
document types were being handled by LO (which we didn't discover until
after generating the default user profile).

My less OSS friendly colleagues decided it was LO's install process that was
at fault and uninstalled it while arguing that it shouldn't be installed in
the first place. That just made it worse because then additional MS Office
file types were "broken". Running a repair-install of MS Office 2010 fixes
the problem, but only for the currently logged in user - all existing users
(and any future users if the default profile isn't re-generated) have .doc
files that open in WordPad, and .xls files that have no association.

I first tried to fix the problem in the Windows File Types settings on
machines that still had LO, but found for example that "DOC" files were
identified as "Microsoft Word Document" to be opened with LO. Changing the
"Opens With" app to MS Word would change the file type to "DOC File" without
a full description.

This appears to affect XP and not Win7 and I can fix our image (with a lot
of hassle), but I think this is a problem that needs to be addressed. Since
there has got to be people out there who have MS Office, and tried and
uninstalled LO (or Go-OO), I'm actually surprised there hasn't been anyone
else (that I can find) who has screamed about their file types left to hang
in the breeze. Has anyone else seen this issue and/or have suggestions on
what happened or how to fix it more easily (for existing users)?

Thanks.

Ouch!
I just checked that box on 2 machines downstairs as i happened to be setting
them both up at the time. I tend to find it much easier to re-write something

elegance. Usually tho, 2nd time seems to be better for me and somehow my

Hi :)
[pointedly ignores the medieval Trekkie reference]

The 3.4.1 will be much better. Honest. And it's due to be released quite
soon. The 3.4.0 has been widely condemned as having been released t
hastily. Oddly, most people have been enjoying using it without any problems
but there are an unlucky few that have been forced back to the 3.3.3. I stayed
with the 3.3.2 more by luck than anything.

appeared, but a very old version of the document.

Does not sound logic to me...

Did I lose the newer version that was up on

Save interval for autorecovery is default at 15 min.
See Tools > Options > Load/save > General

Should I start trying to recreate it from my head?

I have no idea what your computer did with the recovery file. So
unless someone else comes up with better info, I would think you have
to do that yes.

P.S. I'm using LibreOffice 3.3.2 OOO330m19 (Build:202) tag
libreoffice-3.3.2.2 under Windows XP service pack 3.

Thanks for the info. I find no bugs for auto recovery function however:

Is it something you can reproduce (hmm ask Windows update to do it

Hi. There is a bug for auto recovery if the document being edited is a .doc
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34805
I have turned auto recovery and backup off now and just regularly
remember to save because I know I can't rely on it.

Hi :)
Rtfs do have several advantages. Smaller lighter-weight so it's nicer for
emailing and stuff. A lot less irrelevant and possibly personal info tucked
away in the hidden characters. But hopefully that's true of Odfs too.

I think some companies have a vested interest in veering away from
specifications, especially if they defined the spec themselves. Its a good
tactic to keep people far behind and trying to catch up. That's not the fault
of the spec. I think the trick is to stay flexible enough to be able to switch
formats if tooo much game-playing goes on.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Label Printing, how to add label template?

2011-06-30 Thread Ross Bernheim

The Avery 5444 labels are 2 inches high by 4 inches wide, 2 to a sheet with a
5/8 inch space at top, a 3/4 inch
separation between labels and a 5/8 inch space at the bottom of the sheet. The
Avery template 5444 is set up to
use a tab to move to the next label. Lots of fun!

I suspect that I will do my own template in the labels dialog as the 'easier'
way. It is just an annoyance on all
fronts that things that computers were supposed to make easier are instead much
harder than the need to be
if they can be done with the computer at all.

The product lifecycle management database will let me export the data I need
and into a format that Libreoffice
can use with a bunch of steps of dialogs, not hard, just tedious. Libreoffice
cannot see the label template that Avery
says to use from within the labels dialog. The printer refuses to recognize
that the labels need to be fed from the center
even though their paper tray centers any paper you feed it. The printer prints
from the left edge of a standard page size not the narrower labels.

Thanks,

Ross

How did insert the hyperlinks? I use the following: INSERT >> HYPERLINK
and fill out the appropriate boxes on the form. It seems to work fine

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Fw: [libreoffice-users] Impress, Master Slides and Custom Animations

2011-06-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi Jean :)
Thanks :) I had already forwarded your previous post but got a bit swamped at
work today and forgot to let anyone know i had done that.

I'm not great at writing documentation but i think i am just about able to
point
people in roughly the right direction sometimes. It's difficult to cope with
the flood of emails in the users list and there are already quite a few of good
people answering questions well, even if we don't always agree with each other.

This Impress question was unusual and i thought the docs team might have the
best answers for it.

Tom :)

Thanks for your explanation. I get what you were saying, but what I'm
looking for really is a way to avoid having to look at each and every
URL in column A and in column B say which category they're in, whether
that's indicated with a number or with the word 'news', 'search engine' etc.

I don't think I explained the problem very well to begin with,
especially with my poor attempt at representing sheets with text (I
forgot I could switch Thunderbird's mail editor to not use rich text :s)

You might get a better idea of what I'm after by looking at the example
file (

but of course you've already spend time writing two emails, for which
I'm very grateful :-)

RE: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Calc - 3.4 Final version can not open (hyper)links anymore

2011-06-30 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I tried this with LibreOffice Calc 3.4.0 (actually 3.4.0rc2) in Windows Vista
(in a Virtual PC VM on Windows 7) and links, even e-mail addresses, worked
fine. So this doesn't appear to be a general problem.

My spreadsheet had e-mail addresses typed directly into cells and recognized as
links. For Hypertext links, I used the Hyperlink button to make cell contents
with a specific Web hyperlink (target) and separate text to show in the cell.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Calc - 3.4 Final version can not open
(hyper)links anymore

Thanks!

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Calc - 3.4 Final version can not open (hyper)links anymore

2011-06-30 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

I think it might be good to post a bug-report about it.
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

Then if you can cope without hyper-links working for a while the 3.4.1 is due
to
be released fairly soon
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan#3.4_release

Hmmm, actually i would wait until the 3.4.1 as apparently there are a huge pile
of bugs that are fixed in the 3.4.1. Quite possibly including this one.
Please
don't post the bug-report until after you have tried the 3.4.1 (after that has
been properly released)(sorry).

If you can't wait then please go back to the 3.3.x branch as it is the stable
branch and 3.4.x is testing/development branch.
Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Calculating Time in Base Queries

2011-06-30 Thread Don Parris
Hi all,

I am using LibreOffice 3.3.2 on both Windows & Linux (depending on whether
I'm at work or home).

I have a Base DB that tracks shift work, and want a query (or view) that
calculates the total hours worked. I am experimenting with two variations
of the shift table.

Version #1 has:
shift_start_date (DATE) | shift_start_time (TIME) | shift_end_date (DATE |
shift_end_time (TIME) - a shift can start & end on different dates.

Version #2 uses the DATETIME timestamp format: shift_start | shift_end

I saw reference to the DATEDIFF (DATEDIFF(string, datetime1, datetime2)
here:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=23563&start=0

This would seem to work with my Version #2 table, but it doesn't work for
either table as I have attempted to deploy it:
If I try:
[code]DATEDIFF( 'mi', 'shift_alt_start', 'shift_alt_end' ) [/code] --- per
the example from OpenOffice.org forum above
I get a message that claims I *have* to use '-mm-dd hh:mm:ss[.]'

Fair enough. I tried that exact format in the query (where 'mi' is) and
using the -mm-dd hh:mm:ss format in my table field definitions. I get
error messages anyway I try it. Can anyone help?

Thanks!
Don

[libreoffice-users] How to use a motion background in Impress

2011-06-30 Thread Earl Melton
I'm ashamed to have to admit it, but I've just never done this. I'm putting the
lyrics presentation together for my church Sunday and have a MPEG-1 with moving
stars and stripes that I'd like to use for two of the songs. I clicked on
Insert

check the motion, LO 3.3.3 on Win-7 froze up and crashed. When I restarted it,
I
had to put picture backgrounds back on all of the prior slides...AGAIN! Would
somebody please reply with a link or the 1-2-3 for dummies on just how to go
about using a motion background and add text to it? A Google search didn't
really turn up anything usable. Many TIA!

[libreoffice-users] Is LibO_3.4.1_Win Out?

2011-06-30 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
Just say on the filehippo site that
LibO_3.4.1_Win_x86_install_multi.exe is new, but didn't see
anything on the libreoffice.org web site?

On Linux, I've tested each of the 3.4.1rc1 thru rc3, and they
seemed fine in my minor test, but seems strange 3.4.1 would
show up on filehippo before it is on the main site? Am just
downloading it on a windows machine now, since I don't have
windows at home to check that it is 3.4.1 and not a renamed rc?
