[libreoffice-users] Bespoke background images

I've created a bespoke bitmap that I wish to use as a tiled page background.
How do I add it to the list of background bitmaps that come with
LibreOffice?

[libreoffice-users] Re: Batch for extracting lines into new files in CALC

2012-01-17 Thread tk5ep
Hi Jay,

The Calc file has only one sheet, no formulas, only raw datas.

I need to extract all lines having the same value (numerical) from one
column and create an XLS sheet with these lines. This XLS file must be named
with the value used to filter.

For example, filter all lines who have 001 in a specific column, extract the
lines and create a file named 001.XLS.

This has to be done about 124 times, for each and every different value in
the given column (only one column)

Is it more understandable ?

Thanks,

correctly.

I am pretty sure that this should be done at printer-level and not document-
level. Can't you just tell them that they should print it one-sided and leave
right page blank?

Let's consider that you can't. If you are using Linux (and by your User-Agent
I can tell that you do), you can use pdftk (check in your distribution
repository) to insert blank page after each page of your continuously numbered
document. A little scripting may be needed, as well as "empty" PDF, but it
should be very difficult to achieve.

Maybe there are similar tools for Windows as well, I don't know.
I thought there might be a way to "turn-off" a page numbering option in
a Footer after most of the document uses that format. Can you change
the footer's text later in the document without it reseting the earlier
pages?

As for inserting blank PDF pages, there are many free PDF "editing"
packages Windows/Linux that you can combine/merge 2 or more PDF
documents. I remember seeing them a few months ago during my last
Windows PDF editing search. If not free, the costs are small if you
need to do this many times. I would create a document with the needed
blank pages and merge in to the end of your PDF document. I merged 2
PDF documents early last year on my Linux system, but I do not remember
what package I used.

The "back pages" is different from the "back of the pages". I see many
books that are printed that use blank pages for the last few
pages/sheets in the books. Tech books more often than pleasure reading
types. It is part of the printer's processing. Also some must have
even number of page sides so you do not end with front side of the page
and do not "show" or print a back side of that page when it goes into a
2-sided printer. I have one and sometimes that issue messes me up with
multiple copies of 2-sided document printing.

The problem might be the LO version that OpenSuSE uses. It may not
identical to the version that is available from www.libreoffice.org.
Using the latter version, I was able to select 16 consecutive pages
dragging down these pages.
You might want to report this problem to OpenSuSE as it may be a
bug in the version they provide in their distribution.

[libreoffice-users] selection across page boundaries in Writer

2012-01-17 Thread lrkeefe
At some time in the last year, as I have updated from OpenOffice to
LibreOffice on OpenSuSE 11.4, I have lost the ability to select multiple
pages of text by simply left mouse dragging down in the document. If I
cross a page border now, the light blue selection highlight for the text in
the page disappears and a dotted line of the same blue color appears around
the page. As the document scrolls onwards, the text in the next page gets
selected until its page boundary is reached, when the same thing happens.
Is this a setting issue? A compatibility issue with documents created in
OO. sometimes as much as 3 years ago? Any suggestions welcomed. I do a lot
of cutting and pasting between documents, and this is certainly slowing me
down.

Note, you probably want to use PDF/A-1a which is the archival version.

Within the pdf the back pages have to be blanks in order to be printed
correctly.
This should not be a problem for the printer/binder. You will need to
tell them print one-sided not double-sided. One-sided is probably easier
for them because any printer can be used, all printers will print
one-sided documents. You will need to coordinate with the printer/binder
on how they will print the document. You might check with your
program/school to see if they have any recommended printers/binders who
are familiar with your program's thesis requirements.

True two-sided printing requires a more expensive printer because the
paper feed is more complex. In the US the only two-sided "printers" I
have seen are larger office copier/printer combinations; most of the
desktop printers print one-sided.

Many people do not have a printer capable of true two-sided printing
because most home and office printers are designed for one-sided
printing. They print one sheet straight through and can not reverse feed
to print automatically on the reverse side. The paper feed is much
simpler, hence less expensive and should be more reliable.

Since I've mastered adding a TOC with hyperlinks I was hoping I could
create an alphabetic ordered TOC since Indexes don't support hyperlinks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about Writer - pages and page count.

2012-01-17 Thread Mirosław Zalewski
Hi Sylvia

Most of time I create documents that are one-sided and honestly I quite don't
see where your problem is ;) .

If you want to have continuous page numbering, use just one page style -
default should do just fine. You should only: (1) adjust margins (left should
be bigger, since your thesis will be binded there). Then (2) export your
document as PDF (if you don't have printer in home, you should anyway, in
order to preserve your formatting), (3) ensure that page numbering is correct
(by default it should be, but if you File -> Export as PDF, you can check
"Export automatically inserted blank pages", which may change things a bit)
and (4) print it one-sided, one page per sheet (most printers should have this
as default setting). That's all.

Hope you understood what I mean and hope it helps :) .

(Bugzilla calls it Summary) ;)
The idea is that the Summary clearly describes the problem AND includes the
keywords if applicable.

[libreoffice-users] Question about Writer - pages and page count.

2012-01-17 Thread Sylvia Schmidt

Hey,

I'm trying to create a layout for my thesis in Writer. I know how to
work (reasonably well) with page/paragraph styles.

My problem is this: I have to hand in my thesis with only one side of
the page printed, the back has to be blank.

I thought I cloud cheat by only using right page styles, because Libre
inserts a blank page when two even or odd page follow one another. But
these blank pages change my page count. It is true that I actually have
more pages than the written ones but it shouldn't show in my page number.

I tried correcting the page number - but I can't figure out how. With
each new page the number of blank pages increases - so the fifth page
should have the page number 3 (3 written pages plus two blank ones)
while the ninth page should have the page number 5 (5 written pages plus
4 blanks).

Is there an easier way to accomplish my goal? Or does anybody have an
idea how I can correct my page number/count?

Any hints would be appreciated! Thank you for your time!

Regards
Sylvia

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Questions

2012-01-17 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Hmm, it doesn't sound normal.  There are sometimes problems with recovering a
document.  First it might be good to try renaming your UserProfile
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile
This resets all your settings back to "factory defaults".

Can you find the folder that the document was in?  If so is there a file in
that folder that has something like "~lock" in the title?  It is likely to be
hidden so in the file-browser try
View - "Show hidden files"
or in Windows
Tools - Options/Preferences - errr about 2nd or 4th tab - "show hidden files"

I recently downloaded the 3.4.4 version of LibreOffice and I'm having a few
issues with it that I was hoping to resolve.

Firstly, I noticed that even if the program had been working properly and
closed without issue the previous time I used it, the program behaves as
though it had crashed and requires me to recover the program. Often it does
not recover properly and I'm forced to re-recover the document several
times before it works. What could be causing this problem?

Also, sometimes when I close down a document without an issue, a message
pops up on my screen afterward to tell me that the program had not closed
down properly. Yet, when I re-open the very same document it doesn't
require me to recover it. I'm not sure what is going on with this and
wondering if I should be concerned? Could this be because I still have my
version of OpenOffice on my computer?

Lastly, I tend to write very long documents (several hundred pages) that
often require me to backtrack to an earlier page to make a correction.
Prior to downloading LibreOffice 3.4.4 I had a version of OpenOffice that
allowed me to save a document and continue from where I left off when I
opened it again. However, when I downloaded the 3.4.4 version of
LibreOffice it no longer allows me to pick up from where I was last working
and automatically starts me at the very top of the document every time I
start it up. I'm wondering if the new version of LibreOffice, or an older
one, would allow me to continue from my last saved point as OpenOffice did
or if there is a way to change the settings in my current version of
LibreOffice to enable my documents to do so automatically? If not, are
there plans to reintroduce that feature into an upcoming version of
LibreOffice? This was a very useful feature that I'd love to have back,
rather than have to skim through several hundred pages to find where I had
last been working every time I open my documents.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon.

I suggest you create a frame that has the properties you want the
picture to have default width and two columns. Then create an AutoText
with these properties. If you want a frame that is 7 cm wide with only
one column, create an AutoText with these properties. Then anytime you
want to insert a picture select the appropriate AutoText and insert the
picture into the frame.

[libreoffice-users] Change default size to insert pictures

2012-01-17 Thread mnatiello
Hallo
I have to insert photographs on a Write document. By dragging the pictures
from
a file manager or inserting them via "insert -> picture -> from file" the
pictures
get a default size: picture width fits page width (A4 portrait).
I want to change this default. I need the pictures to be anchored as
character, with
default width 7cm (so that I could get pictures displayed 2 by 2 on the
page).
In the far past, OO3.0.0.9, this was done by redefining the graphics part of
the
default style. This solution does not exist any more. The default style may
be changed,
but the picture still enters with "full width".

How can I change the default size and anchor of pictures in a Write document
once
and forever?

Thanks,

It does not matter where you put your Index, it indexes whole document (the
logic behind it is nicely exposed in LaTeX, when you have to process document
two times in order to generate Index). Indexes are usually placed by the end
of book and most user search them there.

You can index chapter heading (why couldn't you?).

You can't index Table of Content (which would be pointless anyway).

Oh, and if by your question you try to know if you can use Index in function
of Table of Contents - perhaps with big enough effort you could, but why
bother? If you need ToC, then you create ToC; if you need Index, then you
create Index. They are different things invented for different purposes.

Thanks for the advice, Fernand. Good to know that it works fine with MySQL.
I tested it that way, even closing both the server and the Ubuntu session: no
change.
So, as a general info to the community, when connecting Base to MariaDB thru
MySQL native connector (1.0.1), it seems that all
db's within the targeted environment are reported in Base 'Tables' zone.
I will continue with testing this context and will report here new founding.
BTW, could someone drive me to some good LO+MySQL (or OO+MySQL) guide, tuto or

Thanks in advance.

I might convert the spreadsheet to a database, with each sheet being a

So, are you talking about table of contents or index?

ToC's are usually placed at beginning or end of book and contain list of
chapters, subchapters, sections, subsections etc. with page numbers. Items are
ordered in the same manner they appear in book and you should not change that.

Indexes are usually by the end of book and contain list of alphabetically
sorted keyword with page numbers (so reader can easily if and where is
particular subject in the book).

Either way, please read LO Writer documentation:

individual sheets. I also don't know why I could add sheets in OOo
without a crash there. Anyway, I'm not going to report it as a bug as
it is probably something sloppy I did in making a chart. Thanks for
your suggestions, etc.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem

2012-01-17 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It's not great to be faced with these challenges and questions and no answers
when people first write in to the list.  It's scary.  Sadly i don't think there
was a way around it this time.

Perhaps John has installed on a lower spec than is really needed for Ubuntu.
Ubuntu really needs 15Gb hard-drive, 1GHz Cpu and 1Gb Ram.  It can run in less,
far less if you are an expert and do a special install but for a default and
usable system it really takes about that much.  Lubuntu is better on lower spec
than that or Xubuntu if you are close.  If one thing is lower but the rest
higher then you can get away with it with Ubuntu but as a rule-of-thumb it's
fairly accurate.

When i was on the Ubuntu forums i often found that people had installed the
Server Edition thinking it would be like the desktop but more powerful.
Another common issue would be that people had been told the the min.spec. for
installing Ubuntu was barely usable by highly experienced Gnu&Linux experts who
could swap-out bits&bobs and do a very non-standard install.  Another common
problem was people installing inside Windows using the Wubi installer and often
again with far too little space.  I made myself fairly unpopular by suggesting
that the official min.spec. should be plenty for a usable system for a total
noob, ie about 15 Gb hard-drive space, not 2Gb (or whatever ridiculous claim
was made).  For at least 1Gb Ram and 1GHz Cpu rather than 256Mb Ram which is
plausible only if the architecture happens to be far better than is likely.
Almost every product makes ridiculous claims and something i initially liked
about Ubuntu was that it didn't but
then the year after they suddenly copied the boasting style of the rest of the
corporate world.

It's also possible that John Black is not subscribed and therefore not seeing
these replies

Tom :)

Your post makes no sense.
If you installed the latest version of Ubuntu then it already COMES with
the full Libre Office suite.
You need to tell us EXACTLY what you have and EXACTLY what you did.
(BTW, you cannot just install Calc on it's own - it's either the whole
suite or nothing).

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Questions

2012-01-17 Thread Julieann Wright

Re: [libreoffice-users] Best JRE for LibreOffice on a 64-bit system: 32 or 64 bit ?

2012-01-17 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
You might be able to turn off java completely.
Tools - Options - Java

Generally and for most programs it is best to have only the very newest JRE.
It is always written with security flaws which we don't find out about until
later.  The company that produces it assures us that their newer one is "safer"
or even sometimes say it is safe but then a month or so later tell us that we
have to upgrade again because that version has horrendous vulnerabilities.

So, LibreOffice is trying to write-out any need for java and at the moment it
is only needed for a fwe things such as the database (if you use the default
back-end that is embedded in Base), a few wizards and some extensions.

Where it hasn't been written-out it seems their best version is 6_21 or on
Windows 6u21 unless you are using the very newest beta-testing pre-release
version of LibreOffice (the 3.5.x branch) in which case java 7_something should
be best.  In LibreOffice 3.3.x and 3.4.x any version higher than 6_24 created
problems for a lot of people and higher numbers even made LO crash in quite a
few cases.  If you are using higher numbers without hassle then you can
probably turn off java altogether (in LO)

Just my 2cents from watching this list a lot

Tom :)

Maybe this can help you

i use Libreoffice and have installed the next JRE's;

JRE 1.6.u30 x86
JRE 1.6u30 x64
JRE 1.7u2 x86
JRE 1.7u2 x64

libreoffice ofrcourse only uses the x86 versions ... and only the 1.6...
IE 64bit uses the x64 jre
FFox uses the x86 jre since it's 32 bit

all other 64 bit apps use 1.7 x64
all other 32 bit apps use 1.7 x86

it depends on the application which jre is used... it has to be compatible with
it's bit-code...

Fernand

Hello team,
I currently installed a MariaDB base server as local host (version: :
5.3.3-MariaDB-rc-mariadb108~oneiric-log, installed from deb
repositories)

and would like to connect it with LO as a GUI (Tom would likely to
appreciate.)
For this, I installed the MySQL connector plug-in
('mysql-connector-ooo-1.0.1-linux-x86_64.oxt').
Connection set up: one existing database specified (this one being
completely empty) - with a user name having all rights on all
databases in

this context.
Well, the connection worked fine, except that ALL existing MariaDB
databases
got displayed in the table section, instead of the single one
specified in
the connection set up; corresponding tables are listed below each db
name.

I suppose that this was not the expected result ans I'm doubtful about
accessing simultaneously to all tables within all db.
Then the question is: what did I wrongly? How could I correct this,
please?

I didn't go any further, for instance I did not test with a user having
access right only defined for the target db.
Thanks in advance for any hint or highlight!
