If you have RC3 there is no reason to download another copy - 3.5 final

This may seem to be a little strange. I have been using LO 3.5 for
opening 5 documents and 2 databases. My recent documents list now shows
seven entries, and I have accessed these seven files today.
I downloaded LO (64 bit) from the LO website. OS: Ubuntu 11.10 64
bit.
It would be nice to know why some are having a problem with this, and
others are not.

Nearly ;-)

LibreOffice has a time based release plan, so 3.5.0 is a version for "early
adopters".

Speaking of "final" in this context may be technically correct but does not
reflect the bug status very well, as for a .0 version only severe bugs (crash,
data loss) have been fixed, see release criteria[1].

Every new micro version (.1, .2, .3...) will have less bugs than the .0
release.

What template is used for import? If it's the default template for
Writer docs, he could set a custom default template.

Otherwise, after import he could use Template Changer to apply his
custom template; that should be faster than changing the style each
time.

Aside: instead of changing the "Internet link" style in order to
change the TOC's appearance (which also changes it for actual internet
links), I would change the "Index Link" style and apply that style to
the TOC. I think there are instructions about how to change the TOC's
link style in the Writer Guide's chapter on TOCs.

2012-02-15 Thread 52midnight

Just to make sure, you know that LibreOffice has the --convert-to
option, so you can simply do:

libreoffice --convert-to pdf

No, didn't know, and it may be the reason I've been looking for to change
from OOo to LO.

There's also a tool I wrote that should work on Windows, Linux and  ;
Currently the --convert-to fails when LibreOffice is already running.

Many thanks for these notes and suggestions; I'll certainly look into them.

No, this is not a case. Text Boundaries are still on by default, but instead
of lines around printing area, they are simply small lines in each corner of a
page. Turning Text Boundaries off will hide them.

At least in 3.5-rc3, because I had no time to test final 3.5.

Please feel free to replace that word with another word of your

Hi John,

Install LibreOffice. When you execute LibreOffice, click
File/Open. Then select the pdf file you wish to open. LibreOffice will
then open the pdf as a slide in LibreOffice-Impress. LibreOffice-Impress
is very similar to Microsoft Office's Powerpoint. Modify what you need.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Extension MSOffice

2012-02-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Obviously if 3.5.x is producing some files in MS formats that MS Office can't
read then it's worth steering away from the 3.5.x at the moment.  Since 3.4.x
and 3.3.x didn't have those sorts of problems i would stick with one of those
or use one of those to fix the problem if it occurs.

It's usually a good plan to keep one version of documents in ODF format (format
format again) just in case problems do occur as it keeps everything nice and
tidy.

Also MS are giving up on their Rtf format and now phasing out Doc in favour of
DocX so presumably it will only be a 'few' years before they phase out DocX.

Tom :)

Perfect!

Wonderful.

A few questions:

I looked for a Dutch spelling dictionary extension at

Which OS are you using?
Windows, Linux, Mac? It makes a difference.

For Ubuntu, I use the Package Manager and search for "libreoffice" and I
will see the dictionaries in the list. I would search for the
dictionary's language code at that point.

Here is a .oxt dictionary file. If you open the file up in an archive
manager [compressed file] you will see the dictionary parts and their
names. You can search for those file names as well.

http://libreoffice-na.us/English-3.4-installs/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/Swedish-spelling-dictionary---swedish_dict_1.442010-10-07.oxt

If I remember correctly, "standard.dic" may be created by the user for
the words that are spelled correctly by the user and not listed in the
package's dictionary list of correctly spelled words.

My question is - do you have MS Office installed on your system?

If No, then making sure that the "load/save" option is checked.
If Yes, then you may have to do the editing of the "file properties"
using the file-browser.

I do not have MS Office installed on any of my systems and I make sure I
check the option for loading/saving MSO files. I rarely have any issued
with them either.

I'm not sure but this might help

Tools - Options - "+Load/Save"

The various sub-pages in there have a few options that might help.

2. Another way might be to right-click on 1 such document and find the "Chose program" or "Open with.." option. One of those should be clear about making it a 'permanent' default (except that you can use the same method to change it back another day if you wanted).

3. In Windows just open a file-browser so that you can see documents inside
any folder. In the file-browser choose
Tools - Option - Folder Options - File types
errr, something like that in Xp anyway, then scroll down the list and choose
which ones should be opened in LibreOffice.

You should be given that option during the install process.
A screen should appear that will say something like "Do you want LO to

I can create a form in the LO database application and put fields onto it
either through Insert>Field or by opening the Data Sources pane (F4) and
dragging and dropping fields from there to the form.

The only way I seem to be able to see actual data from the relevant table
in my form is to select a row in the F4 pane and then press a button (iirc
it's called "Data to Fields". This puts the data from that row into the
form.

What I would like to do though is link the form to the table and provide
the form with navigation widgets that allow the user to see teh data from
any record by naviagting through the records. I see there is a toolbar
called "Form Navigation" which I can get to appear, but all the icons on
it are greyed out.

I guess my question is - how do I get this toolbar to work with my form

I understand that you have a database you created using Base and
that you have a table in that database. What you need to do is to create
a form that is connected to the table. (I'm repeating what I think you
were writing and will be answering accordingly. If not, you need to
correct my thinking.)
What you need to do is to create a form that is linked with the
table. The instructions for creating a form in Base is found in the
Getting Started with Base chapter of the Getting Started Guide. Base has
a wizard which will do that for you, and the chapter I mentioned will
tell you how to use the wizard as well as giving you screenshots on the
process.

Lots of links, tutorials and examples:

All you need is toolbar "Form Design", the forms navigator (button #5 on
that toolbar) and the properties window for the selected item(s).

The English guides have originally been taken from OpenOffice.org User Guides,
so you might have a look at the Italian translation of OOo 3.x Guides[1].
Although they might be a bit outdated for LibreOffice 3.5, many of the
principles should still be valid.

[libreoffice-users] Populate database form with table data

2012-02-15 Thread bogus
I apologise, because this feels like something that should be very obvious
but I have not been able to find the answer for myself.

I guess my question is - how do I get this toolbar to work with my form
and table the way I expect it to?

Thanks

When using a multiple column layout, in 95% of the cases the pictures
are anchored to the page, because the editor want to fix the images on a
specific place in his layout, and most pictures are wider than 1 column,
see most of "magazines" layout.
We produce 8.000 magazine pages a year, using OO-LO, and yes we

to move the images and then we surly need the colomn bouderies as a
guide

. In such a situation an alignment to columns seems questionable to
me. If you want your picture inside a column use anchoring to paragraph.

Besides that, you know the column width and can set width and position
of the picture accordingly.

When using a 4 column layout, its problematic to have al this postions
in mind 9 mm, 43 mm , 95 mm, ect

I know that people like using the mouse, but using the dialog is much
more precise and flexible.

here i can 100% agree, but we are talking about 5% of the users who
understand the allignment techniques, the rest use the mouse , eye and
boundarie lines :-)

Kind regards

Another suggestion: Use F11 to open the Styles& Formating dialog.
Click the Page styles icon. The right click the Default page style.
Using the Border tab, Set All Four Borders. Then select the width and
color of the border. Click OK.
This could also be done with a page style you want to use.
Granted when printing, it does require opening the page style and
selecting Set No Borders in this tab.

If you anchor an object to a character, your object will be treated as
a character. That's why there are large white space on the line of
your object due to its height.
Instead, anchor it to a paragraph. Then you have freedom to move your
object around.
From my experience, what you're describing is anchoring 'as' a
character; I'm anchoring 'to' a character, as anchoring 'to' a paragraph
isn't specific enough for my document. The problem comes when the page
break falls such that a full page would require the character to be on
one page and the frame to be on the next.

I've looked, but I haven't uncovered a mechanism in LO Writer to deal
with this situation satisfactorily.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 corrupts DOCX completely

2012-02-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Actually MS Office 2007 and 2010 can both open the older Odf formats (errr Odf
= OpenDocument Format which makes that sentence clunky).  To switch LibreOffice
to the older format try

Tools - Options - "+Load/Save" - General

then about mid-way down the sub-page is a drop-down saying
"1.2 Extended (recommended)" click on that and roll it 2 places backwards up
the list and choose "1.0 / 1.1".  Hmmm, the older format was not so great with
spreadsheets (allegedly) but was totally fine with word-processing.

MS, as a professional company, obviously couldn't risk using a format that was
in widespread usage for about a decade but not officially released beyond a
'beta-testing' stage.  The 1.2 standard was only fully released last year
sometime and a year is not long enough for MS to respond.

Just out of curiosity why do i get tons of complaints from TDF officials when i
say MicroSquish but the more derogatory term used by e-letter is apparently
fine?  This is the only list that has a problem with my term.  Even MS fanboy
lists seem to like the cuter term when i use it there.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 corrupts DOCX completely

2012-02-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The DocX implementation is not perfect in MS Word.  There is allegedly an
internationally agreed 'open' standard with the same name but inevitably there
are deviations from that in MS products.

LibreOffice is getting closer to the implementations used in MS Word but each
version of MS Word implements 'the standard' slightly differently.  According
to the Microsoft.Com website (or was it the installer for MS Office 2010) it
also varies according to which OS you happen to be using.  So the way a docX is
produced by MS Word 2007 on Xp may be slightly different from the way it's
produced in MS Word 2007 on Windows7.  Some LibreOffice users find they become
the "middle-man" between colleagues in the same office using MS Word who would
normally have problems sharing files with each other because they use different
versions of Windows itself.  Simply by opening and saving again in LO tends to
fix the problems from either person and produces a document that magically
works on both different MS Word users.

MS keeps moving the goal-posts so if a document doesn't work then just post a
bug-report about it.  The LibreOffice devs then get around to 'fixing' LO so
that it reads the new mess created by or desired by MS Office.

Personally i would recommend avoiding the MS formats and just stick with Odf
such as Odt for word-processing.  If you need to share with MS Office users
keep your original in Odt and just "Save As..." to get an MS format.  I tend to
use Doc rather than DocX as it tends to get less messy.

This is just my own opinion based on experience, comments on this and other
lists and from having just installed MS Office on the networked machine at
work.  It's not necessarily the view of TDF as i am not even a member of TDF.

Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Word import TOC link style

2012-02-15 Thread Barleyman
I'm using writer to make indexed PDF files from word documents, we're using
word to create product specifications etc. These can get pretty long and
complicated so it's nice to have document map in the PDF.

So far so good but the default style for TOC items and links in word
document is "internet link" style which is to my mind rather ugly underlined
blue. Word uses black font for the TOC-style links normally and blue links
only for actual internet links.

It is possible to make a custom template which is used for new writer
documents that uses more normal-looking black links for "internet link".
The problem is that this template is NOT used for word import. So it's
necessary to go change the internet link style each and every time.

Is it possible to get black TOC links for imported word documents
automagically?

3.5 should install over the top of 3.4. You seem to be using Linux, but
IDK what distro. Your package manager should take care of things for
you.

Even if you compile and install by hand, you probably only need to issue
a "make uninstall" command, so long as you've not deleted the relevant
files from the source directory on your machine.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Base - Phone book ?

2012-02-15 Thread Andreas Säger
Linux users who can not connect to TB can export csv files from TB and
connect LibreOffice to this data source. Notice that you can export any
virtual address list you have created in TB and that the exported csv is a
snapshot of the current address data. You need to repeat the export
procedure in order to get the latest address data into your csv files.
TB address book tables > CSV directory > Base > Calc/Writer reports

Create a dedicated directory to take any csv list exported from TB .
Export all the lists you need (including any virtual lists) into that
direcory.
In OOo call File>New>Database...
[X] Connect to existing db
Type: Text
Specify the csv folder and the usual csv import delimiters.
[X] Register the new database
Save the new database document.
You may want to add some simple queries to query only certain rows and
columns in a certain order of rows and columns.
Close the database document and forget about it.
Now you can hit F4 in Writer and Calc and read any of the exported csv files
plus the additional Base queries without any further configuration. Just
drag some icon from the left pane into your document. For mailing list
labels you may drag column headers from the right pane into a Writer
document.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Extension MSOffice

2012-02-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I'm not sure but this might help

Tools - Options - "+Load/Save"

The various sub-pages in there have a few options that might help.

2.  Another way might be to right-click on 1 such document and find the "Chose
program" or "Open with.." option.  One of those should be clear about making it
a 'permanent' default (except that you can use the same method to change it
back another day if you wanted).

If you anchor a picture to page, then the reference is the page not a
column. Anchoring to a page means, that the picture hovers over the
continuous text and stays on that specific page regardless how the
continuous text is changed. In such a situation an alignment to columns

anchoring to paragraph.

Besides that, you know the column width and can set width and position

[libreoffice-users] Libreoffice and Opentype

2012-02-15 Thread Séamas Ó Brógáin
The claims being made for the improved typographic features of
Libreoffice 3.5 are disingenuous, to put it mildly. All are related to
Graphite, a minority “smart font” technology that is not widely used
(and that is implemented for Libreoffice with precisely two fonts).

Meanwhile the mainstream smart-font technology, Opentype, now
implemented by practically all other word-processors (and for which
hundreds or perhaps thousands of fonts are available), continues to be
ignored.

http://libreoffice-na.us/English/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/Dutch_spelling_and_hyphenation_Dictionary--nl-dict-v2.00g2010-09-22.oxt

Perfect!
Now AutoSpellcheck works for Dutch language as it did before updating to
LibO 3.5.0.
Wonderful.

A few questions:

I looked for a Dutch spelling dictionary extension at
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center but there was no such
thing there.
How did you know about http://libreoffice-na.us/English/dictionary.html ?
Is it mentioned in the LibreOffice help pages or documentation?

And does anyone have any idea why/how the Dutch dictionary was lost (or
deactivated?) with the upgrade to LibO 3.5.0?

Anyhow,
I'm very happy AutoSpellcheck works for Dutch language as it did before,
now.
Thanks very much, once more.

Best regards,
Spiff

Hello everybody

Spellcheck do not work fine.
Linux ubuntu 10.4 with libreoffice 3.5 .
It is the same. I tried to start immediately with the release 3.5 but
the start is the same: to involve users to check the bugs.

Patience and go on.

It seems to me that you need to tell more about your situation, allowing

Again, AutoSpellcheck works fine over here, also in Dutch.

[libreoffice-users] Error creating new document: templates already exists

2012-02-15 Thread alphonsom
If I try to create a new document using a template (this is in Windows x64)
with LO3.5, I get an error message saying "Error creating new document:
templates already exists". This didn't happen with LO3.4. I've tried
deleting the templates folder, changing the default, removing the templates
from the template folder, all to no avail.

Does anyone know how to get round this?

Thanks.

Just do not use your distributor's LO. The downloaded version from
http://libreoffice.org( includes the TB address book driver in all versions
of LibreOffice.org. Same with OpenOffice.org. For some reason I never
understood, the Linux distributors used to cut off the TB support from OOo
Base. I used to use the TB address book driver since OOo version 1.

You should be given that option during the install process.
A screen should appear that will say something like "Do you want LO to
be the default program for opening MS Office documents"?

[libreoffice-users] Unable to install LibreOffice 3.5.0 via GPO

2012-02-15 Thread Andreas Oster
Hi all,

I have tried to to add LibreOffice 3.5.0 as a new package for GPO
installation but failed to do so. I get the following error when
I have selected LibO_3.5.0_Win_x86_install_multi.msi:

"Add operation failed. unable to extract deployment information from the
package. Run validation on the package to ensure that the package is
correct."

First I did a msiexec /a with the original MSI from the LibreOffice
web page, moved the stuff to a server share and tried to add the
package. When this did fail, I tried with the original MSI but got the
same error message.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue ? With the older 3.4.2 and
3.4.2 it was no problem to add the package to GPO and distribute it
to the clients.

Thank you for your kind help.

best regards

Andreas

I can only tell you where it was:
Tools - Options...
+OpenOffice.org - Appearance
Text Boundaries (2nd from the top)

Perhaps they just have it off by default? Seems silly to re-program
just for a tick box setting.

I have deployed unoconv on a Linux file server in a cron script in
order to convert some XLS file to PDF every 15 Minutes
automatically. It runs into an error every now and then, but will
run fine the next time again. I haven´t investigated further.

The statement in the cron script is as simple as:

unoconv -f pdf /home/supervisor/scripts/MESSEPlan.xls

Examples for error messages that one of each appear every now and then:

Error: Unable to connect or start own listener. Aborting.

8697 Speicherzugriffsfehler unoconv -f pdf
/home/supervisor/scripts/MESSEPlan.xls

Cheers,
Stefan

Just to make sure, you know that LibreOffice has the --convert-to option,
so you can simply do:

libreoffice --convert-to pdf

There's also a tool I wrote that should work on Windows, Linux and MacOSX
called 'unoconv', which offers some more functionality. It would be nice
if all the functionality of unoconv would be integrated into LibreOffice.

 - influencing the import and export filters, similar to the import/export
   option dialogs in LibreOffice

 - apply template during conversion, so you can apply styling/formatting
   when converting documents

 - so it works when LibreOffice is already running, or multiple instances
are running in parallel (e.g. for batch conversion)

Currently the --convert-to fails when LibreOffice is already running.

True for "page" layouts, but simple try a multiple column layout and try

Perhaps you only need a different workflow? Do you want to align the

(or the surrounding frame in case of graphic with caption) and align
left.
Or do you not use the mouse at all? Then you need only the

find it for you.

I first thought too, I would need that border. But then I find no
situation, where it is really needed. So please describe a goal, where
you need the border line.
