Re: [libreoffice-users] Dot separated date in YYYY.MM.DD format
Hello, Here are my thoughts written after the > sign in response to Brian Barker's ideas: Spreadsheets generally used for calculation, so preventing it would usually be considered a drawback, not an advantage. You could put text values into word processor tables instead. But chacun à son goût. > I forgot to mention: My colleagues use the computer like a typewriter. Hold on: "BC 1000.01.01. to BC .12.31." makes no sense, as your start date is after your end date! Do you mean BC .12.31. to BC 1000.01.01.? But that starts at the end if the first year and finishes at the beginning of the end year, losing all but one day each of those two years. So perhaps you mean BC .01.01. to BC 1000.12.31.? That's better, but it still leaves you with what would be a roughly twenty-thousand year range - but with a strange central gap of 1998 years, from 999 BC (BCE) to AD 999 (CE) inclusive. I can't imagine you mean that. > My suggestion was wrong. The date range should be:> BC .01.01. to AD .12.31.> The missing range should be in this form:> e.g. BC 0012.01.01. > 1st January 12 > e.g. AD 0341.01.01. > 1st January 341> e.g. AD 0016.01.01. > 1st January 16 > The leading zeros should help in sorting the dates. Spreadsheets have always been able to handle text. I suspect most spreadsheet users would not see selecting text as a data type to be a workaround, beautiful or otherwise. > My colleagues use the computer like a typewriter. That is why they want to input the date format as it looks.> Another problem is that there are different computer systems, e.g. Windows XP, Windows 7, Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2010. Unfortunately, Microsoft products produce inconsistent results as usual in my environment. LibreOffice is changing and improving. > I consider recommending LibreOffice to my boss after making sure that it works consistently. People make mistakes. One obvious limitation is that non-existent dates can be entered as easily as real ones. Entering "2015.02.29." as text creates something looking as much like a date as does "2015.02.28.", whereas entering these (supposed) dates normally shows one as a right-aligned date and the other as left-aligned text. Only Erich Kästner and perhaps the Tiananmen Square protestors are allowed the 35th of May. > Absolutely. Exactly a typist and typewriter can produce typos.> A typist needs to accept no automatic check for non-existent date, e.g. 44 January 2015.> My boss appears to require the staff's human check instead of automatic check. But I say again: chacun à son goût. > I consider convincing my boss to use the automatic format. Custom format code: "."MM"."DD"." which I know will produce 2015.01.01. without problems in LibreOffice.> It is very hard for me to convice my boss.> I don't know if there is any tutorial teaching me how to convince a typist to use the automatic tool. The typist is afraid of changing formats when the automatic tool is enabled.> Computer software changes all the time. I myself cannot guarantee that the format will stay the same. Can the LibreOffice community "guarantee" the static format of date? Alternatively, can the community make a design standard to let the users know that the future versions of LibreOffice will handle the dates in the same way? How about quality assurance? Can the quality assurance people help to check this date handling consistency before releasing another improved version of LibreOffice.> I am sure that with the "guarantee" or "best practice of design", my colleagues (the typists) and I will be a bit comfortable in using LibreOffice for internal computing at least.> Thanks for ideas. Re: [libreoffice-users] Dot separated date in YYYY.MM.DD format
Hello and happy new year! At last, I knew how my colleagues strongly believed and what they wanted to achieve. They wanted a date format which works across all known free, paid, old and new versions of spreadsheet program, e.g. LibreOffice Calc. They decided to use .MM.DD. and MM.DD., e.g. 2015.01.01. ---> three dots. 1st January, 2015. and 01.01. ---> two dots. 1st January. This format is standardized internally for communication. The good things are: (1) The date is stored as "text" or "string" on the computer. It is not a "number" to the computer any more. Adding or subtracting dates is disabled. It is good for just displaying the dates, which my colleagues wanted. (2) Because of (1), the date is not converted to 01/01/2015 or 2015-01-01 or 01-01-2015 as these can be default formats. Such conversion is not welcomed because the input format is different from the displayed format. The user inputs .MM.DD. and the computer displays exactly the same format. This is the consistency my colleagues were desparately looking for. (3) No additional configuration is necessary when using this .MM.DD. format. No time is spent on training staff to format a date to a certain form in a spreadsheet program. Then this is efficient. I simply sent a notice to all staff to follow the format on behalf of my boss. (4)This format is good for sorting in the spreadsheet program. It is also used in naming files. File names can be sort accordingly. (5) There is virtually a very large range of dates can be processed, e.g. AD 1000.01.01. to AD .12.31. and BC1000.01.01. to BC .12.31. (if extended to Y.MM.DD., the range will even be larger.) because the date is not stored as a "number" and this is not limited to the design of the software (old and new). Constrained hardware can also process many dates in this format. This .MM.DD. format is a beautiful workaround when only using it to display and sort dates. I can think of two limitations. Firstly, there is no way to add or subtract dates as easily as before. (No problem because in my case, I only display and sort the dates, not adding or subtracting.) Secondly, the file size may be a bit or much larger because the "text" or "string" is stored. (No problem because of cheap hard disks.) If your case is similar to my case, I welcome your use of this .MM.DD. format. Best wishes,C. H. Re: [libreoffice-users] Dot separated date in YYYY.MM.DD format
Hello all, Thanks for following up. A quick recap: I was looking for the .MM.DD format. The user inputs it as it looks, e.g. 2015.01.01. (LibreOffice Calc should recognise it as a date.) Here: Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages -> Date acceptance patterns I don't know how this should be set. I tried .MM.DD. This did not work. (with the semicolon) I tried Y.M.D. This worked. (with the semicolon) Here: Format -> Cells -> Numbers -> Format code I must use .MM.DD, not Y.M.D. What led to this inconsistent format? I am interested in the technical reasons behind. I think that it will be consistent if a user is allowed to type the same .MM.DD format code in both places to get what she or he wants. Re: [libreoffice-users] Fractions in Maths
Hi! I think an interesting reason may justify the enhancement request. It is a matter of speed. For me, I need to use the keyboard very often. Typing Alt+I+O+F {2a over 3} (Esc) (Esc) (17 keys) is slower. Typing 2a/3 (space) (5 keys) is faster. (17-5)/17*100=70.59% That is about 70 per cent of reduction in the number of keys I need to type (not using the mouse)! Amazing! Regards, C. H. [libreoffice-users] Fractions in Maths
Hello, LibreOffice Developers and Supporters! I need to handle some fractions in Maths in LibreOffice Writer. The fractions look like 1/2 or 10/40. I would like to make them look like: 1 - 2 (no superscript and no subscript) There are some possible ways to do this. A _proper_ way is: Insert -> Object -> Formula -> {} over {} My imagination is like: Autocorrect the text as object. When typing 5/6 (space), I get 5 - 6 which is an object. (Ctrl + Z would return 5/6 (space)) My second imagination is like: Using Find & Replace to replace 7/8 as 7 - 8 I could get the object option in the Find & Replace dialog. Find: */* Replace: (format as object) * - * This could convert all the "horizontal" styles into the "vertical" styles. My third imagination is like: In LibreOffice Calc and in a formula in LibreOffice Writer, I could have =7/8+1/8. I could also have 7 1 =- +- 8 8 (These are objects.) where LibreOffice could perform the calculation and give me the result in fraction. This post below really led me to think that typing fractions could be a part of the fundamental work a word processor should be able to do easily: Formatting Text as a Fraction (on 20 May, 2009) http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=18901 Is it possible to add the features? Am I simply too ambitious? Perhaps, the features are ready but I am missing something, aren't I? Best regards, C. H. D. H. D. > _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > https://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/demo_create This is Firefox's site that walks you through the creation of Persona designs. Since LibreOffice uses their Persona guidelines, currently, I am going by their information. They describe using a header image of 3000 pixels wide by 200 pixels high. The footer size is 3000 pixels by 100 pixels. They also have a file size limit of no more than 300KB for the images [total size of the two combined, I believe]. Now here it the sticking point. Draw seems to want you to create pages, not specific images, like Corel Draw and Inkscape. You must be able to create a specific image size, in pixels, and I do not know how to do that in Draw. I just looked - There is a Pixel definition in the File > Export using the exporting to a JPG format. There you can take your design and make it the correct pixel size. All you have to do it make the image proportional to the needed pixel size. Make your page/image be in centimeters and use a "box" 300 by 20 cm in size for your design area. Then export it to the 3000 by 200 pixels. - - - - What I did when I created a "felt texture" Persona was this: I created a page wide design using all of the filters and texture-fills that Inkscape has. I played around with them till I got a background image that I liked. That was using "vector graphics" way of making designs, the way Inkscape and Draw does. Then I exported the design to a "bitmap" image that is pixel based, like photos are. I made sure it was exported to be at least 3000 pixels wide and 200 high. Then I used a package, like GIMP, Paint Shop Pro, or Photoshop, to do some editing of the image to get the final design to be EXACTLY the 3000 pixel width and the 200 and 100 pixel high required for the Firefox specifications for a Persona. At that point I tested the Persona design, to make sure it did look well and was not interfering with the header and footer menu and icons. If you want to use it for LibreOffice 4.0.x and/or Firefox, you test the design[s] and tweak them before you decide they are working well for you. At that point, currently, you can go through the posting process to get your Persona listed in the Firefox Gallery. It is a simple process. I have asked the question about the approval process and a gallery placement within a LibreOffice page, like we have fore templates and extensions. We need approval if we use the official logo[s] for LibreOffice and TDF. So, look into the Person design specifications on Firefox's page. See if there is a way to create and export an image to a specific pixel size. Since I have not learned how to use Draw properly, I do not know this process. - - - - I use Corel Draw and Inkscape for my "vector graphics" images and Paint Shop Pro [5] and GIMP for the bitmap/pixel editing work. I use Ubuntu/Linux for my default OS on my desktop that I do most of my work. I use Inkscape and GIMP on them. I do use a Win7 and a Win XP/pro laptop[s] that I have Corel Draw, Inkscape, Paint Shop Pro [5] and GIMP installed on them. I have been using specific packages for specific design processes. Since I have used Paint Shop Pro 5 [and other] for many year before I looked into using any Linux system, I find it easier to use it for some image editing needs. Since I now use Linux for my desktop, I have been learning how it use GIMP for these editing processes. To be honest, right now, I do not know much about Draw's abilities and how to use it properly. It seems to be a "vector graphics" editor. It would be nice if I learned that package well enough to use it for that, but I know other vector graphic package much better and therefore easier for me to do the needed design work. I have been using some packages since they came out in the Windows 95/98 and XP days. You use what it easier for you to use. Maybe I will take the time to learn how to use Draw as well as I know the other packages, but that is not "for the near future". -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe

Also, there are some example download images files to start the process as well. I looked into this last month. What I would do is download the image files they use as examples and then use them. These files are shown in pixels not inches or any other measurement. That is best. On 02/13/2013 03:00 AM, C. H. Re: [libreoffice-users] Bug 60390 - FILEOPEN: Cannot open particular document
Thanks for the idea. I would say that the development team responded very quickly. When I submitted a bug regarding not being able to open an OpenDocument file, the development team figured out the issue and made a patch in three days! Amazingly fast! I test that OpenDocument file and it will open in LibreOffice 4 (current version). Great! I think the development team will work it out soon. Hello! Do I support LibreOffice? Yes, I do. Let me show some positive numbers: When I downloaded 400 .doc files, I opened 399 files in LibreOffice. Only 1 could not be opened. All 400 files were smaller than or equal to 692.5 KB. I started the testing from the smallest file to the largest file. It happened to be that I could not open that one file which was 692.5 KB. I am not a Maths expert. 399/400 = 99.75% Congratulations! This is excellent! Well done. To make a rough conclusion, I claim in a reasonable way that LibreOffice can open 99.75% of the .doc files I may come across in future if these files are smaller than 700KB. I do not know if these numbers are scientific enough. However, such information definitely helps me to say that LibreOffice 4 is really good! Microsoft Office is not my area of interest, by the way. Hello! Yes, my Microsoft Office is legal. (Just happened that many other people use it.) I think it is an interoperability issue. I searched the Internet and looked for documents randomly to test if LibreOffice can open them. This is the authentic test. I cannot contact the author since the document was downloaded randomly. If Microsoft Office opens the .doc files correctly, LibreOffice should also open them correctly. If Microsoft went bankrupt, what office suite would be able to handle thousands of .doc files? Re: [libreoffice-users] [Writer] Current page value?
Hello! I am one of the many users. I have made a video (less than two minutes). If you turn on the captions in the video, you will see the steps in words. Show or hide page number (footer) on last page in LibreOffice 4 http://youtu.be/FAbtRoIP8-o The feature of "Page Styles" helps me to customize the last page in less than two minutes. I do not know if this works for you. I do not know a faster way to do the things you described, i.e. "to be continued" to be printed on all pages except the last one. Re: [libreoffice-users] Page count does not match visible pages
Hello! In that case, I think there should be an enhancement request, e.g. Page 1 / 2 1 / 3 Page 2 / 2 3 / 3 The page count should display both cases. This will certainly be less confusing. At present, the page count is: Page 1 / 3 Page 1 3 / 3 I agree that the PDF option "Export automatically inserted blank pages" makes the three pages. Regards, C. H. What I am saying is that everything you see is by design, and will not be seen as a bug: Writer still sees three pages, even if you choose to print only two of these. > Consider File -> Export as PDF. In both cases, only two pages are visible in > each PDF file. That's because the same option is controlled separately for exporting to PDF. The PDF Options dialogue, which you see when you use File | Export as PDF..., has, at the foot of the General tab, a separate "Export automatically inserted blank pages" tick box. Yours must currently be unticked. Writer thinks that if you print that exported PDF document double-sided, you will need that extra page - to ensure that your second significant page prints on the front of the second sheet, not on the reverse of the first. I suppose that there is no simple answer to this which takes account of both single- and double-sided printing in an intuitive fashion. But there's no bug, I think. In double-sided printing, odd-numbered pages need to be rectos, or right-hand pages, and even ones versos, or left-hand pages. Your second page is numbered "1", so LibreOffice expects to print it on the front of a second leaf, not on the reverse of the first leaf. So you have three pages: the first page, the blank reverse, and your second page, numbered "1". Go to File | Page Preview to see the extra page. If you want to print single-sided, go to Tools | Options... | LibreOffice Writer | Print | Other, and remove the tick from "Print automatically inserted blank pages". Then you won't get a blank sheet. You can make the same selection on the fly through the Options... button in the Print dialogue. I trust this helps. [libreoffice-users] Page count does not match visible pages
Hello! I think I have found a bug. I have submitted the bug report. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60594 This potential bug may affect printing, e.g. producing blank pages because the page count does not look correct. Is there any other information which is necessary to make the report complete? I wonder if it is a problem of LibreOffice in general or my version of LibreOffice only. Regards, C. H. Re: [libreoffice-users] How-to video of using Firefox Personas
Hello! I have just watched the video provided: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2bbnyAjMeM&feature=youtu.be I think this video is tidy. (I have not used CMIS.) The voice is nice. I think I have kept my video as short as about two minutes. I think people will not have the patience. (Most people I know do not have patience.) I also feel that "two minutes" is the key. If a video is longer than that, then the process must be very long. Very serious users will spend more than two minutes on watching such a long video. If I need to use CMIS tomorrow (being very nervous), I will need to know how to do it as soon as possible. I suggest giving the audience the most important steps first. The link mentioned is for more advanced users, I believe. Regards, C. H. D. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 寄件人︰ Tom Davies 收件人︰ C. H. They might be interested in putting it on their page of video tutorials. Btw have you seen this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2bbnyAjMeM&feature=youtu.be that uses an unusual sound-track and a minimalist voice to help keep people's attention? I've seen a lot of YouTube HowTos that have sound-tracks that quickly get very out-dated by choosing music that is very fashionable but that lacks class. I don't like the particular piece of music in that link i just gave but i do like the way that it's unusual enough that people are unlikely to have heard it before and certainly not enough to get tired of it. Also a lot of times videos have constant chatter going on, often without really adding adding anything useful. Lots of "umm" and "ahh" and "Here you can see that i am doing" or "As you can see". The constant flow of words makes it difficult to translate and yet keep the timings good. What i really liked about the voice in the link i gave was that the speaking parts were short and distinct so that when it was translated from Danish into English the chap was able to chop up Pamela's voice and place the comments in exactly the right places. So, Pamela only had to leave decent pauses between statements. She didn't have to get the pauses exactly right because Leif was going to chop up the voice-audio and place the parts appropriately to fit the video and the music. I think the only thing missing is an srt file under the video so that people could download the srt and the video in order to see the subtitles. Alternatively just some way people could get the script in some other text format. Either way something for blind users to be able to get through their screen-readers. Anyway i really just wondered what you thought of the link. Have you done a lot of these sorts of things? Yours looked like you knew what you were doing. If you do write a script i might be able to get Pamela or another lady to read it for you as long as the script was quite short and if they could re-arrange it a bit to make it flow better when saying the words out loud. Re: [libreoffice-users] Quality Assurance
Hello, I think DiffPDF is somewhat reliable. If I also use Adobe Reader to view the potential difference, the comparison will be more reliable. [libreoffice-users] Switch off warnings
Hi! When using PDF/A, the following messages were shown. During PDF export the following problems occurred: PDF/A forbids transparency. A transparent object was painted opaque instead. Some objects were converted to an image in order to remove transparencies, because the target PDF format does not support transparencies. Possibly better results can be achieved if you remove the transparent objects before exporting. I am fully informed. Is there a way to switch off these warnings? How? Is there a better way to display the warnings, e.g. 1. display warnings for 20 seconds and stop displaying them automatically, or 2. display warnings in an "action bar"? In both cases, users should be allowed to do other things without confirming that they see the warnings. At present, users must press OK or the x before they can do other things. Maybe, there should be a part like: Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice -> Warnings -> ( checked ) Enable warnings when XXX ( checked ) Enable warnings when YYY ( checked ) Enable warnings when ZZZ This looks systematic. Okay, I tried to figure it out. If I use Ctrl+space to switch the input method, LibreOffice (LO) will follow the input method on Windows 7. For example, if I use a Traditional Chinese (TC) input method, the language of the characters will be marked as TC in LO. If I use a Simplified Chinese (SC) input method, the characters will be marked as SC in LO. If I check "Ignore system input language", I will expect LO to ignore the latest input method provided by Windows 7. However, this does not work. No difference is visible. LO always use the language specified by the input method. (If the input method is TC, the characters will always be TC.) On Debian Linux, the language is always marked as the one under the heading "Default languages for documents" in LO. If the Asian box is TC, my SC characters will be marked as TC (even if I use a TC input method). If the Asian box is SC, my TC characters will be marked as SC (even if I use an SC input method). Checking or unchecking "Ignore system input language" does not make any difference on Debian Linux. Regards, C. H. D. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ --- 2013年1月5日 星期六,C. H. D. 寫道﹕ 寄件人: C. H. In LibreOffice Writer 4.0.0.0 Beta2, Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages -> Ignore system input language I use LibreOffice Version 4.0.0.0.beta2 (Build ID: 4104d660979c57e1160b5135634f732918460a0) on Debian Linux. I searched the Internet and found http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/PATCH-fdo36324-fdo42929-option-to-ignore-system-input-language-changes-td4016517.html However, I still do not know how I may benefit by checking or unchecking the box. Any ideas in layman's terms? (Should I ignore this new option on Windows / Debian Linux?) (Should the option be called "Customize input language"? "Ignore" is an ambiguous term.) Regards, C. H. Re: [libreoffice-users] Ignore system input language
Hi! After all, what does "Ignore system input language" mean in LibreOffice 4.0.0.0 Beta2? I don't see any Writer Guide or things like that. Where should I consult? Regards, C. H.
