Also, you can Ctrl+Z autocorrect, right after it capitalize the letter.
It works for (almost?) all autocorrect (changing -- to ̶, --> to arrows,
etc.)

Maybe (I don't use MS Word). However, as this is the LO list, and we're
talking about LO usage of styles, I'm not sure how it would make this "not
a good idea" :)

If I understand correctly, your files are not meant to get glued together,
but only to share styles.
In that case, there is several things to know:
- If the files already exists, you can "load" styles from one document to
another one. It will erase all styles in the current document that share a
name with the "loaded" ones, but subsequent changes in either files won't
be repercuted in the other.
- If you're creating new files, create a template beforehand (even an empty
one) that will be used to create your documents. By doing so, if you change
the styles in the template, when opening a file created with this template
it will prompt you about updating styles in the document. There's
effectively a link between the documents and the template
- Additionnaly, you can "create" that link between a document and a
template using the following extension:
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/template-changer. By
doing so, updating the template will have the behavior described before, as
in it will prompt you to update the various independant files.

Note that this extension, while not updated for long, still work. However
having this feature built-in (the ability to change a document's "master"
template) would be nice.

Master document are not only about sharing styles (in fact, I never saw
them in this light), it's about splitting your work in easily manageable
smaller files. I don't even know why having styles would concern having the
possibility to create a master document.
When you're working on a reasonnably large project, it's simply easier to
split it. For example, having each chapter in it's own file, instead of
loading one huge file. It's more stable and easier to navigate.
Ahem, still don't get why you're mixing the presence of styles and master
document. The only link I can think of is that a master document's style
override the sub-documents, but even then... maybe you can clarify what you
meant?

Here's your problem. It seems like the languagetool extension is built
against Java7 (which is the currently recommended version anyway), and your
installation of Libreoffice use Java6.
(for more informations, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_class_file#General_layout, which gives a
helpful list of major version for java class files amongst other things).

As for your issue, switching to Java7 is likely to fix it, and unlikely to
break anything. Although mishap can happen, Java is usually quite nice with
retrocompatibility (in case you have anything in LibreOffice that actually
use Java beside languagetool...).

The issue here (well, issue might not be the word), is that on some
configuration, the automatic download don't trigger/is blocked by the
browser. In this case, someone not akin to reading a wall of text will just
see the prominent donation part of the page.

But as far as the actual content of the download page is concerned, I
believe the text if perfectly clear about the optionnal part of the
donation. But... users ;)

Wow... that's true; the OP is from february. GMail showing conversations,
I didn't check the first message date, only reacted when the conversation
showed up :\

Anyway, what I said old true; you can either wait for LO support of GTK3 to
improve dramatically/wait for gtk3 broadway backend to improve dramatically
or use another solution that's more or less the same regarding the
implication, like having a remote desktop software (Google Chrome even
integrate one really easy to use), or run libreoffice on a linux box and
use an Xserver on your local computer (look for WeirdX for a possible
browser plugin, or XMing for local installation).
In all case, you have to have a running libreoffice on your remote box, and
can *only* access the remote files (no local files).

Unfortunately, I don't think there will be significant progress on my side,
as both LO and GTK are quite large projects. Way too large to play with
only on freetime, and I believe the main issues lies between their
interactions, without one being 100% at fault. I could do this little
experiment only because support for it was available (LO using GTK3, and
GTK3 providing the broadway backend), only a recompile away. Diving into
the codebase would be time consumming.
For information, building LO from scratch took roughly 90 minutes using 3
cores to improve build time on a recent system (but one must keep in mind
that following builds are faster, since they take advantage of what didn't
changes in between).

Building a more recent GTK however brought some improvements, the most
noticeable one is the scrolling that works. Although I know some
alternative that can roughly provide the same level of functionnalities, I
kinda hope that developpers will have time to sort this out, as it can
always come in handy.

Ok, so I built LibreOffice 4.2.0.0.alpha1 with GTK3 support, as it's needed
to use the broadway backend it provide.
The result is less than stellar, unfortunately. I don't know how well LO is
written to support GTK3 yet, but there's a lot of improvements needed to
make this usable:
- Display's all whonky: menu items don't always show, have a black
background, when scrolling a document the content disappear...
- Windows/Dialogs not always opening/closing
- Crash when using fullscreen functionalities
- General unresponsiveness (on a local connection)

Also, not that I tried this with GTK 3.4.2, far from the last version.

However, even if the graphical part is fixed, the following will stay true:
- The application runs 100% on the server. Think of it as an X11
application sending it's windows to a remote machine: only the display is
deported. Execution, filesystem, all is from the server.
- Shortcuts will likely be an issue
- Response time will be a major setback: you press a key, it have to go to
the server, then the server send back a display update to the browser.
Running locally it's somewhat noticeable; over the internet that would be
problematic (although useable).

Don't know exactly where the fault lies, but some other gtk applications
works well, so I believe it's a mix between broadway not being perfect and
LibreOffice doing funny stuff to GTK.

You can see it "in action" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quzoMEXRAhg.
You might want to cut the sound though, my spoken english is far from
pleasant ;)

If I get around running a more recent version of GTK3 without breaking my
system, and if it improve things in a way that make it usable, I'll tell
here.

I'm having a hard time compiling libreoffice with gtk3 support (or
rather, my VM is having a hard time :D).
However, I did build gtk3 with the broadway module and launched an
application (gedit) on my linux box, and "showed" it on my windows box.
It's really only the display that goes to the browser, as I see my linux FS
and nothing else.

It's still interesting, though. If my LO build end anytime soon *and* work
with gtk3, I'll post more details.

Yes it is! Hehe.
Although it might be possible under windows, building the needed parts on a
linux system is usually easier as build tools and source packages are
easier to come by.

For the record, the provided wiki page reference the broadway backend of
GTK, which mean that the software is actually running on the server, and
only displayed in the browser. It's not different that what you'd achieve
with logmein or X forwarding or VNC (etc...).

Curious peoples can try the various tutorials on the web (not always
straightforward...) to enable broadway as a GTK backend on their systems
globally, and thus use it with libreoffice (or anything using gtk3 I
suppose). At least under linux.

This might not be supported anymore... it reference version 3.5, which is
quite old.

Anyway, if you're really willing to have such "functionnality", you could
always emulate it with some existing techniques (since setting up LO as a
webserver and setting acces to it from the web needs minimal technical
knowledge, I believe you're ready to use the alternatives):
- Remote desktop, there is some kind of client that run in a web browser too
- X server (even on windows!). Allow you to run any application from a
remote server, including LO. It can also perform slightly better than a
"dummy" VNC-based solution, but your mileage may vary. Also available in
the form of browser-compliant java plugins (not tested myself, but it
exists)
- Get in the code and bring this functionnality up to par yourself (just
kidding; this looks like a tremendous amount of work!)

Anyway, I don't think that adding webserver-gui functionality should lie
inside of an office suite, when there is alternatives.

Not sure if it's the best way, but you can edit your TOC to add "extra
styles" to be used. Simply add "Bibliography header" as a first-level style
here and it should work (at least it works for me).
I don't know how it's called in english (only french UI here), but it's the
second checkbox (under plan) when you edit your index.

If this work, it shouldn't prevent you from looking at Zotero, which is
very good for handling bibliography though! (but your issue of having the
bibliography in the ToC would have been the same).

> lot of work for no reason...
>

Read your own post: "a lot of work for no reason".
First, some of these projects *have* reasons to have a 64bit build. GIMP
can handle large and complicated images, and need to break the 4GB limit
(2GB really on default build). Other needs to handle large quantity of data
and might take advantage of new vectorizations instructions, etc...
Second, it *is* a lot of work. Even in the post you mention, there is at
least two project that kinda struggle with 64bit windows build: firefox,
where they are not really supported, and FreeCAD, which seems to have
dropped support for 64bit windows. It's costly to maintain program that
build for many targets, and cost is an issue with some open source projects.
And last, building a piece of software from the ground up and
maintaining/evolving a (rather large) project for that long are very
different. Here, we're not talking about writting code from scratch, but
you have to make sure that every piece clicks. Going back through *all* the
code to make sure that there isn't a pointer somewhere or an int there that
would suddenly break because some OS API expect another type of value is
indeed "a lot of work", way more than just writing from scratch.
LibreOffice might be a fairly recent project, but it's codebase goes way
back.
And again, all of the work needed to barely have a stable working build
would yield very little benefit. The code don't magically take advantage of
64bit code by just changing the compiler's target.

So, no, other projects didn't decide to have "a lot of work for no reason".
*Some* decided to have 64bit builds from the start, *some* decided to
revamp their code, *some* decided not to, *some* gave up on it. But in
every cases, ressources for such projects are limited, and focusing on
bugfixes and enhancement seems more useful than having a 64bit build for
what is, regarding LibreOffice, no reason.

Having 64bits binary in linux/macos is natural, as everything around is
64bit, and the toolchain is quite easy to handle.
On windows, there is two issues regarding this:
- 64bit software is not as common as one would expect. Some Java
installation are still 32bit, which would break LibreOffice64bit instantly.
- Building 64bit binary is somewhat tricky on windows; mingw64 is a way,
but when you end up having dependencies that need to be built as 64bit too,
and they don't build easily, it gets tedious, to say the least... assuming
the code would build at all by just switching compiler target. Not sure of
the current state of other "open" solutions like cygwin regarding this. And
using MSVC would be more challenging than anything, as it introduce it's
own set of surprise when going from 32bit build to 64bit build.

And all that just to have a 64bit binary that would only give more work and
no immediate benefit...

Whoa, you're leaping way too fast here. GPU are better at number
crunching, but only at that, and litteraly at number crunching. Branching,
working with the rest of the hardware, interrupts, and even some kind of
float or integer operation are not exactly their shining part.

I agree that moving the *relevant* operations to GPU-based hardware can
(and actually do) provide a very large boost, but the kind of operation
that benefit from them is really limited. There is a reason we still have
those general-purpose CPU around you know. Talking about windows or linux
systems that are GPU based is a bit of a stretch.
Even for LO Calc, formulas that are more complicated than "add x and y",
for example using lookup functions, statistical functions and other funny
stuff would probably not run better on GPU. One of the key point of the GPU
(or GPGPU, general purpose GPU) performance boost is that you can handle
*arithmetic operations* that are *massively* parallel, not that you have a
lot of raw computing power.

Also, maybe it's I/O related. Does this happen if you move a file elsewhere

there? Trying this might help finding the cause of the problem (or provide

It's the elaborate approach, to stay on the bleeding edge of LO and be
cautious with uninstall. You can take this approach if you want, *but* you
also have the easy route. Most distributions keep reasonably up-to-date
packages in their repository, and installation takes only a few clicks in
easy to use graphical user interfaces. On some of them, it's even installed
on initial setup.

For example, in Ubuntu 13.4, you have the 4.0.2 version of LO available at
hand.

I don't know of an exact solution that would allow you to both specify a

character maps to display characters using a specific font. For example on

Unfortunately, while it's true that old mso formats used "password
protection" as a simple access management tool, recent version (think docX)
and libreoffice files *do* encrypt the files.

Opening the file as a zip file will only yield ciphered files, except for
the mimetype one, which is not very useful.

If done correctly, the "slow down" part would grow into many years. That's
the point of encryption, since a bruteforce attack is always possible with
every cryptosystems :-)

However, you're right; for most people this option is more like a trap if
it is not part of a greater document management system that does take care
of the details like password, keys, and allow for some kind of recovery.
Maybe there should be a warning box that explicitely state that the
document will be lost if the password is lost.

Unfortunately, short of having an unprotected backup of your file somewhere
else, there is no workaround for a lost password. If there were, the
protection would be pointless...

I'm afraid that short of a bruteforce you're out of luck.

Note that the creation of a PDF form is checked by default, but if at some
point it was unchecked, you'll have to enable it again. The PDF export
dialog is shown when using the File->Export to PDF. It's not shown when
using the toolbar icon.

My 2cent:

The framework used on "regular" systems (like gtk) are completely different
than the one used on mobile devices, both iOS and Android. Although some
framework tries to reduce the gap (I'm thinking about Qt), last time I
checked LO sources it was not designed this way.

It's not a matter of "just" rebuilding, it would need a lot of work, first
redesigning the UI to work with mobile device (both having something
adapted to touch interface AND built using framework for mobile OS), and
moving the codebase (or rewriting from scratch) for objective C (the
language used for the iOS SDK).

Even funnier, an Android port would be easier to do if LO was still in Java
(insert laughters here :) )

tl;dr: having an iOS version of Libreoffice pretty much mean redoing
everything (in my opinion)

Of course, this doesn't answer the question of app available today for
editing ODF files on mobile devices in general... seeing that even google
drive (at least on Android) feels clunky, I would advise against doing real
work on tablets...

About linked styles, remember that among the display options, beside
"display all" and "only used styles", there is the "hierarchical" option
that display exactly this kind of link between various styles :-)

It's also quite useful, because you can somewhat create styles
"categories", like all the "Title 1", "Title 2"... ones are under the
single "Title" style. It's easier to find it this way (in my opinion).

Keyboard shortcut aren't that bad if your objective is to upload pics to
internet.

A quick and efficient way of doing it is to use imgur:
- Open imgur, select "web upload"
- Capture *only* the currently active windows (by pressing Alt+PrintScreen)
- Go to the imgur window, press Ctrl+V to directly *paste* into the
website :)

You can repeat the two final steps to put as many screenshot as you need;
when done press "Start Upload" in the imgur window and tadaa. It actually
avoid the need to create temporary image files on your computer, and
provide you with public links.

Of course I only cited imgur as an example, there is probably other service
that handle pasting images nicely.

I know I'm coming after the battle here, but it's a nice trick to know for
sending screenshot all around, and surely future versions of LO will also
need new screenshots :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] opening powerpoint files restart the computer

2013-07-21 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
While it's totally true that malicious code might be embedded in anything
(especially ms formats... but we won't talk about this :)), I doubt it
would trigger a reaction as bad as a reboot, especially under recent OS.
Crashing a user program is very unlikely to cause a system reboot, except
if it call some regular reboot code, that would trigger a "clean" reboot,
windows closing and stuff. Most likely output is simply the program
crashing/getting in an unstable state.

As I said, it's not completely ruling out the possibility of a catastrophic
crash caused by some code issue, but it's fearly reasonnable to suppose
that loading this file make LO expand to use more memory than usual,
touching a faulty area. If the computer usually work without issue, maybe
the ppt file is very large, or very complex, or the LO loading routine
doesn't handle it nicely and cause the memory cost to increase.

It would be interesting to know wether the reboot is "hard" (instant black
screen) or soft (windows closing down normally).
Also, if the ppt file isn't sensitive, it would be useful to put it on some
kind of file sharing site for people to try loading it.

There is not much stuff (if any) in LO that could cause a reboot of a
computer. Although it's not possible to completely rule out a LO issue, I'd
suggest you run some memory testing program (like memtest86+), as it's much
more likely that your issue is related to faulty memory/hardware.

Well, it IS a feature. The direct formatting is *only* the direct
formatting: done using the toolbar buttons, or directly by doing right
click on the text and changing paragraph/characters here. Removing direct
formatting will *not* remove paragraph styles nor character styles since
they are, well, styles, not direct formatting.

It can get confusing, but you just have to remember that there is multiple
"layers" of formatting applied to the text: paragraph styles, then
character styles, then direct formatting (don't ask me where the
conditional formatting goes).

Re: [libreoffice-users] A feature, or ...?

2013-07-10 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
It is possible that there is some direct formatting applied to the text.

Among other things, what determine the final look of text, it first apply
the paragraph style, then the character style, then the direct formatting.
Those two can be changed independently. For example, applying the bold
attribute by hand (using the B button in the toolbars) change the direct
formatting. If you then apply a style, it will not override the direct
formatting of the text.

Usually, if using styles correctly, you shouldn't apply attributes by hand
*at all*. To check if this is the issue, you can delete direct formatting
quickly by selecting the text, and use the "Format->Delete direct
formatting" menu (or something like that; I'm not sure about the english
UI, but it's the first command in the "Format" menu).

[libreoffice-users] File that crash LibreOffice Impress

2013-05-29 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
Hi,

I'm using LibreOffice 4.0.3.3 on Windows, and have a file that will crash
Impress.

When I open the file, either by double-clicking it in the windows file
explorer or with the File->Open menu in LibreOffice, a window open, I can
see the loading bar on the bottom and it close.

It doesn't kill LibreOffice (if I have other document open they stay open)
and if I close everything and restart LibreOffice, there is no document
recovery window. Also, there is no error message or anything.

The document itself is very simple, less than 10 pages, a few clipart and
text; no effect, transition, animation or anything else really.

It open fine with LibreOffice 3, so I could work around this, but I believe
it's a rather bad bug. If a developer want to see the file, I can send it
privately (it's not really confidential, but I'd rather not make it
available publicly). Just let me know.

ogg is not lossless, but flac is. Anyway, if your starting quality is a CD,
no matter what you use if you go over 320kbps you'll get "almost lossless"

Same as OP problem, try to select the text that don't seem to follow the
style correctly and use the "format->remove direct formatting" (or
something like this) menu command.

As far as I know, text formatting depend on at least four things: paragraph
style, character style, direct paragraph formatting and direct character
formatting, roughly in that order. If you have direct formatting, changing
style won't erase it. The format->remove direct formatting clear these.
(I'm not talking about conditional format here, because I'm not sure
when/how they apply).

Re: [libreoffice-users] head format does not change

2013-02-17 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
Maybe it use direct formatting (when you select some text and choose
text/paragraph attribute from menu/toolbars instead of styles).

You can remove direct formatting with the adequate option in the "format"
menu while selecting the problematic part of the document.

Re: [libreoffice-users] java error

2013-01-22 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
This is a dump file, made when the JVM crash.

If you have regular crash, it can be helpful to find the cause. If you
found only one, it mean only one crash, so it's probably not a big problem.

To answer your question, it's complicated to tell who is at fault for this
one: it seem that a call to getenv() caused a segfault, which seems odd.
Only cause I can see for this is calling getenv() with a NULL value, which
would be quite hard from a Java program since the call should be wrapped by
the JVM, but it's not impossible either.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Creating High Res Images in Draw or Impress

2012-08-16 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
I'll try to explain more clearly what I did (libreoffice 3.5.5:

1 - create your image or whatever in draw. I created a 5.3/5.3in image
2 - file -> export
3 - choose png (as you were talking about png initially; it might work the
same for other formats)
4 - in the next dialog, it show the good size (5.3/5.3) with 96 dpi. There,
you can put whatever you want, let's say 300dpi.

That's where you have to put *back* the size. If I put 300dpi, the size
shrink to 1,7in, BUT after this you can put back the original size, by
typing 5.3 again.
In the end, it produced a png file with 1593x1593 pixels with a resolution
of 300dpi, which would be printed at 5.3x5.3in

Here's a short video of the process, creating a 300dpi png of a 5.3in
drawing (5.3in == 13,46cm roughly). The drawing is exported, then opened in
gimp to show the image properties:

When you put the desired dpi value, simply set the size to what you want. I
just tried in draw, got a big png :)

The fact that it change the size when you change the dpi feels like a bad
design issue, though the png export dialog looks quite "raw" as it is.

The quickstarter option was the source of many issues, and disappeared at

This discussion showed up some times ago. If I remember correctly the main
point of still looking for the quickstarter was to have a "handy" menu with
all libreoffice programs at hand, and this can be replicated with all

Re: [libreoffice-users] .odt - default package being Okular not LO

2012-06-26 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
File association on Linux are usually managed by the desktop environment,
and as usual settings are first taken from individual user configuration,
then from system wide default.
The package installation probably set the system wide default, but packages
can't change individual user settings.
If okular took default when lo was removed, it's in user settings, which
can't be overriden by packages...

At least on KDE 4.6.5, I can right-click on an item group in the
applications menu, and add them to the panel. When clicking this new icon,
it open a popup menu with the item in it. If you create a LibreOffice group
with all the shortcuts, you can mimic the old quickstart.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unable to start my newly installed LibreOffice v3.5.2 programs.

2012-05-06 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
Well, from this logic, you could say that if LO had problems, everyone
would have a problem, but it's working fine for everyone else :)

The issue is somewhere between LO and your system, so ruling out the OS is
not a bad idea.
For example, when a system got a faulty RAM module, it could work fine most
of the time but crash under some load (and LO is quite the load...).

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to change document author in existing document

2012-04-11 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
If you're willing, you can open the file with an archive editor (it's a
simple zip file), and edit the information in the meta.xml file inside it.

As far as I know, there is no easy way to alter this field directly in
libreoffice (maybe someone wrote an extension for this...)

Re: [libreoffice-users] how about 'recent documents?'

2012-04-09 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
If you're running LibreOffice in windows 7, the profile path should be
something like C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user\

You can access this place directly by typing in the "Run" dialog (opened by
pressing the windows key and the R key, Win+R):
"%APPDATA%\LibreOffice\3\user"

once here, simply rename the registrymodifications.xcu file to something
else and check if the "recent documents" issue is still there.

On system other than windows, I'm not sure about where the profile is
located (most likely ~/.libreoffice under linux though)

Try deleting/renaming the registrymodifications.xcu file in your profile.

Deleting the profile might not be enough. It looks like the profile
location changed, meaning when LO don't find it, it will migrate your

Re: [libreoffice-users] .doc set by default problem

2012-02-06 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
The options you changed is only for inside libreoffice. It is used when you
save a new document you're currently editing.

If you're using Right click->new->text document from outside, like in the
windows explorer, it's not taken into account. Instead it use an empty
template file set-up during the libreoffice installation. This mean that
when you open it this way, it's not a "new" document, since windows already
created it from an .odt file.

If that's your case, use the new function from inside LibreOffice (File
menu->new) or look for a way to add a .doc template to your system new menu
(for example in windows, you can put an empty .doc file in the
C:\Windows\ShellNew folder to do so).

Re: [libreoffice-users] Create Index with clickable links in Writer?

2012-01-07 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
In the index properties (when adding it, or after with right click->edit
index) on the second tab are found the format used for each index entries.
If you use the "hyperlink" button when placing your cursor before and then
after the entry title, it will create an hyperlink (button's name might not
exactly be this, my interface is not in english).

So for example if the default is:
_E#_E_T_#_

you click left of E, use the hyperlink button, same on the right, and it
goes:

_E#_DH_E_FH_T_#_
