Extracting the ods file and examining it globally is, of course, also an

Just "$" (no quotes), it seems.

Another thought: consider using Paste Special (instead of ordinary
Paste) and "Unformatted text" when inserting text from elsewhere. This
avoids some problems.

In addition, "$" is a regex, use regular expressions check box. In case
of a normal paste operation, because you want to preserve hyperlinks for

Now write something in that blank doc that is text. Then you should
modify that text style to correspond with what you're using in your

It is still odd we can't change templates from the interface. Template
usage is one of the LibreOffice blessings.

To overcome this, I created a script. It may be of use in cases with
master documents and large amounts of slave documents.

In Linux it is a handy habit to drag windows combined with the alt-key.
So you might want to try the following in a maximized window state:

* Move your mouse very roughly to somewhere around a corner.
* Press and hold Alt-key
* Start dragging with your right mouse button to a preferred position
* Release your fingers from keyboard and mouse

PS Alt + Left Mouse Button is "moving the window".

[libreoffice-users] What happened to templates... part 2

2019-06-20 Thread Wiebe van der Worp
Let's say we take care of the following:

In Options -> LibreOffice -> Paths -> Templates add path to template.ott

In File -> Templates -> Manage Templates -> template.ott is available.

A new document is created: File -> New -> Templates -> template.ott

All goes well, document document.odt is saved. Template updates are
reflected in the document too.

File document.odt is moved to another directory. This means template
location in meta.xml is not pointing to template.ott. Link is broken.

Document.odt is opened. Location of template.ott is not corrected in
meta.xml. Link stays broken while template.ott is at the right spot in
the designated template folder.

The only solution known to me is unzipping document.odt, repairing
meta.xml and zipping back to document.odt.*

I find it hard to believe that moving a document, or mailing a document,
is enough to break the connection with the template permanently.

Is there anyone able to shed some light here?

Beste regards,

Wiebe van der Worp

[libreoffice-users] Font with visible spaces

This time not a question, but an answer...

I needed a style, a font, with spaces made visible, couldn't find it,

If you need it some day, it lives at http://media.nedcad.nl/support/

A few thing were interesting to learn:

Copying from PDF-readers: Trailing space character(s) of a selection are
skipped.

In Writer, formatting marks (Ctrl-F10) itself also contain spaces that
are made visible with this font.

@regina, thanks. node meta:template in file meta.xml was not found. I
assume this is what is also shown in File > Properties > Tab General >
Template (?)

No Template Changer AND no linked templates is a show stopper, so back
from 6.n to 5.n and since this did not help much:

Package latest and greatest 5.4.7.2 from
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

unzipped in ~/Downloads
delete all from ~/.config/libreoffice

sudo su
apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*
apt-get clean
apt-get autoremove
cd ~/Downloads/LibreOffice_5.4.7.2_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS/
dpkg -i *.deb

In LO: Tools > Options > Paths > Templates > Added location of custom .ott

When I create a document based on a standard template, template
information is included
Ditto when custom template is used.
When I paste from a source, template information is blanked

Time for Template Changer from
https://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/resources-for-contributers/template-changer-extension/at_download/file
(1.2.7d)
Installed it
Restarted Writer
Assign Template to new document > select template > Ok and...
Crash of LO

Looping what is before in order to try 5.3.7.2
Same story, except first hanging and then crashing.

So I installed the distro version 6.0.6.2 again without Template Changer.

What I did now, is very carefully paste information from documentation.
Added a field with template information for controlling the link. Part
by part pasted, creating new TOC's, it works without breaking the
template link.

Considering the large amount of documents I maintain, it is all in all
quite frustrating, but with a little progress fortunately.

If I do grep on an unzipped and empty document with template
"template-name", like
grep -r -i "template-name" *
I get only one result in meta.xml

Maybe a stupid question, but does changing template information directly
in meta.xml help in cases where I loose template links? In that case,
BASH doing unzip sed and zip might be a hackish solution.

All suggestions appreciated very much!

After updating to Xubuntu 18.04 I was quite surprised to find out that
ott templates are not linked to documents any more.

Trying to solve this, I found out "Template Changer" is broken.

Now I am trying to downgrade LibreOffice, but that fails because
template changer (1.2.7d) / LO crashes during the assign process.

This is what I installed after removing 6.n:

Anybody familiar with this? And having suggestions how to solve this?
All my documentation is based on linked templates so for me this is a

You're right about complexity and everyone should make a well thought
decision. I've asked a lawyer and translated his Dutch answer to English:

It's complicated. There are jurisdictions with a sweat-of-the-brow
copyright protection. Then there is the EU with its data bank protection
(in itself a wrong instrument) that has caused all kinds of weird sui
generis protection of data (such as the Dutch "geschriftenbescherming")
to be invalid.

I would not categorically dare to say that data by definition falls
outside the scope of copyright (within the EU it does, because of data
bank protection, which is something else (and complicated in its own way)).

Maybe this makes it a bit more clear:

BricsCAD runs on Linux too, making it, combined with Calc, a nice and
powerful combo. First thing I did after watching was trying all paste
options without success. But it is good to know that clipboard data
contains formulas.

As a second approach I unzipped a Calc file and tried to import
content.xml and got an error in BricsCAD: "Failed to find
'Workbook/Worksheet/Table' node in XML data." I guess it only expects
Excel. I will leave a comment at the blog entry...

Bruce, I tried your suggestions without success.

On the other hand: There is nothing wrong with importing cvs, it is a
working solution. And it was nice to see someone use Calc.

2017-07-10 Thread Wiebe van der Worp
Hello everyone, I was watching this video:
https://blog.bricsys.com/tutorials/bricscad-spreadsheet-import/

It describes two methods to get data from a spreadsheet to a CAD table
entity. The first method uses csv from Calc, imported to CAD. The second
method is a paste special procedure with Excel (viewer) with
preservation of (a limited set of) formulas.

The question concerns the second method: Is there an easy way to achieve
this with Calc without an Excel viewer?

How would Writer know which new style was equivalent to which old style?

Interesting, at my system:

Philip, are you using the TemplateChanger from the link mentioned at the

Feel free to do so. I really hope it helps stressing the subject.

I've added the text below to the bug report of Bruce and reopened it -
https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=79234

=

I really do pity that that this described bug is not solved after so
many years. By writing this, I hope it helps getting the attention it needs.

This text describes a bug in LibreOffice Writer (and OpenOffice),
concerning stopping re-paginating before a proper - intended - layout is
generated.

This bug concerns all users. More specific, it concerns all users that
write longer documents with objects like images where text flow is not
set to "no wrap".

As suggested, a general accepted work around is to omit text flowing
around objects. This can be achieved by anchoring objects "as character"
while setting wrapping to "no wrap". This way very large documents can
be generated, such as the official LibreOffice documentation.

This solution has three major drawbacks: First, it is impossible to
optimize layouts, create richer and more reader friendly layouts.
Second, because of the introduced white spaces left and or right from
the object, it costs a lot more paper when printing documents with this
work around. Third, settings like anchoring as character and no wrapping
are not default settings, making users run into problems unexpected,
without them having a clue why their document is screwed up.

When normal documents with objects grow in time, there is a point where
the background re-paginating process stops unexpected without finishing
rearranging the layout. At this point, Tools > Update... doesn't work,
while the menu pull down item remains visible, suggesting an unfinished
re-paginating process. When the document is saved, closed and opened,
the layout is properly restored in most cases. However, when the
document grows further, there is a point in time where the layout of the
document is permanently broken. Without the knowledge of the workarounds
- and even with this knowledge - it chases power users away from
LibreOffice.

Typical symptoms of this bug are initial well re-paginated pages,
followed by blanc pages and or blanc parts of pages.

This bug is easy to reproduce, simply by adding text and objects in a
default way to a default document.

There seem to be much noise around this subject. One of them is the use
of too large bitmap objects. Another one that may be, or not, is this
one: media.vanderworp.org/.dot/.lo/test_s03e24.odt. This may be related,
I don't know. Main thing is that the focus should be on re-paginating of
larger documents. A small twenty page text-document with objects in the
form of complete empty frames is enough to illustrate the problem. For
example, if a TOC is added at page 1 and two heading levels are used,
then editing and updating the TOC, toggling between 1 and 2 levels will
let re-paginating go south.

In large documents, such as instruction manuals or educational works,
like the official LibreOffice manuals , it is highly desirable that
objects, such as pictures and quotes, are an integrated part of the text
components. This bug makes that integration impossible.

I have some test documents that illustrate the problems.
media.vanderworp.org/.dot/.lo/test_s02e15.odt is an example for creating
re-paginating errors. If I can be of further assistance, let me know. On
the global users mailing list there are multiple threads about the subject.

could confirm the behaviour that I see. Just place the cursor above the
large picture, hit enter / backspace back and forth, which sometimes will
make the large picture disappear. This is LO 5.1.5.2 but I do see the
problem in 5.2 as well.

I could reproduce the behaviour as you described. It is odd that the big
frame plus picture cover the margins, but that doesn't seem to be the
problem.

The picture below is anchored as paragraph and that "explains" the
behaviour, magical disappearance, after giving an enter.

Anchoring the second picture as character makes it stable again. And
making a bit more space between the picture by putting an empty
paragraph before the anchor of the second picture works as well.

It made me a bit curious, maybe the document is a bit contaminated,
maybe something else. So what I did is saving the bitmaps, saved text as
ascii, created a brand new document, inserted everything and, surprise,
exact the same problem. So a one page document with two pictures is
enough to get into trouble. Even worse, if the pictures are removed from
the frame, same result.

If you would like to give it a try:

If one adds an image in an out of the box new document (insert > image),

Everyone should agree that the odt version of the "get starting guide"

many pages in the document would be considered as the low end for "large
document"?

It is probably a bit of a grey zone. The "get started guide" does not
use wrapping and apparently wrapping is causing errors during
repagination. That considered, the guide is large but not that complex
to recalculate. In "small" documents text wrapping around objects
doesn't cause problems. But as the document grows "large", the blanc
(parts of) pages creep in, amongst others depending on the amount of
included objects.

And I noticed this bug report:
https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=79234

I find it sad that no action is taken because if you want to write a
"larger" document with proper layout (with text wrapping), then Writer
is not suitable.

How about filing a bug report again? It is reproducible, affects all
users, and it is a very old problem in the core of Writer.

As for solutions: today I've converted a sub-document, changing all
anchors to "as character" and problems were solved, the document is a
lot more responsive too. Downside: layout is not very nice and due to
lacking of wrapping text around object, the number of pages becomes
considerable larger.

In this document most images have blanc spaces on the left and the
right. The table solution mentioned by Bruce is used, two images on one
line using left and right aligned tab stops is used and to emulate
wrapping, an image followed or preceded by a frame is used - and all
anchored as character. So far it works again.

You could try to use a master document (.odm) with smaller

stopping, but reformatting every sub-document/satellite can be forced
after opening the odm, before exporting to pdf and or printing. On the

creating extra work with this procedure.

I have got the impression that it is the pictures LO has
problem with since most of these extra page breaks are made where there are
pictures nearby.

I agree. And calculating columns goes wrong too in certain large documents.

I have tried anchored them to the paragraph or as a
character without any effect that I can see. Closing and reopen the
document clears the problem as the initial page formatting works fine.

I did some testing with the large LO-manuals from
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/. They don't suffer
from this problem, despite the large amount of pictures. This is
described further in the link to the thread above. These pictures are in
a frame, with the frame anchored as (not to) character, always followed
by an enter.

Unfortunately this causes a lot of white space left and or right from
the frame when small pictures or listings are involved.

This will ensure that each person visits each room exactly once, but the

were happy with the group sizes.

Your solution is way more elegant than mine and I will put these control
measures at work, thanks. On the other hand, the deviation of number of
people per room is quite unexpected, forcing a lot of Ctrl-Shift-F9 strokes.

This problem may be of the sort that would be much easier to solve

C, D and E contain room numbers for time slot 2, 3 and 4

F contains time slot 5, for row 1: =15-SUM(B1:E1)

Works on 5.0.5.2 (Xubuntu 15.10), indeed a valuable tool when editing

Really like to hear your feed back on this.

I am having trouble with master document constructions and no one on
this list could help. An assumption: Not many on this list work with
large and complex documents and experiences are probably appreciated.

http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg46555.html describes
my problem.

Follow ups:
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg46652.html
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg46659.html
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg4.html
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg46671.html

Long story short: If you run into trouble, the first follow up contains
a procedure to solve re-paginating:

* Open document
* Update index
* Update selection for every satellite/sub document (using navigator)
* Update index again

The last follow up is a suggestion not to wrap, i.e. select
picture/object > RMB > Wrap > No Wrap.

Hoping memory is serving well, I tested a 500 page document without any
errors and came to the conclusion that if you insert pictures/objects as
character, LO renders it straight away.

But... If you don't like to spoil empty paper then RMB wrapping objects
is a must, leaving one with the need to update selections manually as
described above.

Why this long text? It sounds familiar (900+ pages boiling down to 400+
pages), so it might be a related problem and that makes curious.

If you search the net you will find a few more unsolved cases where
large documents contain empty parts (like 900+ minus 400+ pages = ~500
initial white space).

One last thing, you probably want to share one template for both the
master and all satellite documents. You may like "Template Changer
1.2.7" by André Schnabel, works fine on 5.0.2.2. See
http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=103039, a pity it
is not a standard functionality in LO.

Nope, no page breaks and empty paragraphs, the blanks are inserted by LO

Hehe! No, just keeping feet on the ground, I'm referring to a .odm
master with linked .odt files (as satellites). You can see them in the
navigator part on the left side of the screen dump.

what is the reason for using PDFs?

Printer doesn't like filesize, some raster images are simply too big,
not LO to blame, I sample images back to normal values during pdf export.

To get an idea I've temporary placed the following screen dumps on
http://media.vanderworp.org/.dot/.lo/ :

1_lo_after_open.png
2_lo_after_update_index.png
3_lo_after_update_selection.png

This solution is highly complex and unfriendly (some of these masters
contain a lot satellites), I consider not properly calculating the
layout a bug.

huh?

In the above example it means updating the TOC, RMB every attached .odt
in navigator en choose update selection, then update the TOC again.
These steps should not be needed imo.

The documents themselves have strict style rules and only contain
bitmaps and svg's.

huh?

I mean, there is nothing fancy that could be blamed for not calculating
the lay out properly.

After opening it starts organizing the flow of content and at a certain
point it simply stops. No idea if it is a time out, a crashing
subprocess. The reason to think in that direction is because every time
I open the same master document, the layout, the places where blanks
occur, is different. It also looks like what is described at
http://en.libreofficeforum.org/node/6144 .

I just made a master document and, as a test, inserted the Writer 4.2
manual (https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/) in it.
Almost 500 pages, no problem.

However I noticed that pictures in this manual are set to no wrap. Maybe
that makes things too complex for LO in my document.

Thanks for your time.

So it is rasterized and does not preserve the vector format of the logos.
Am I doing something wrong ?
Do I miss an option in the PDF export ?

Not aware of it. In your case I would anchor to cells which exports

The current version exports version 1.4. Not an answer but an additional

Ghostscript should be able to convert it to your required version. If

Re: [libreoffice-users] invoicing systems using Calc (or something else)

I'm looking for really simple invoicing system. I've seen a few out

product based invoices versus service invoices (what I need).

A while ago I came up with a similar question here. Not happy with my
software I've tried several options and finally decided to be stubborn.
So I made a construction in Calc and after three months working with it
I can say that is was worth the effort and I am very happy with it. I am
in full control now, instead of pushing buttons on a black box, I can
import raw csv files from the bank and after a good talk with and help
from my accountant the output is very compatible with his demands. For
people not very familiar with Calc I would strongly advice not to do it
this way.

One of the reasons to do this is that my invoice system is based on
tables in Calc. In fact it started with Star Office and is now over 13
years old. It is not a nice polished system, back then I had a database
in mind so it contains a lot of sheets for relations, a sheet for
customers, customer - project, project - invoice, invoice - sold items, ...

Flexibility is a main argument. For example, over the years I began
exporting, inside and outside EU, to private persons and companies, all
having different VAT laws. It is extended to serve well and I am even
not aware of a system that is able to do this task better and is Freedom
software.

Concluding, I am in full control, it took a lot of work but that is
paying back, it is not polished, using it is hard to explain to
colleagues, you always have to be careful not to mess things up, it is
very easy to export data, search data and sort data. It takes discipline
to work with it.

Perhaps most important... Over the years I've learned one thing, smart
entrepreneurs are experts in bookkeeping. If not, work on it. Last
resort: find a bookkeeper for a long term relation.

I'm not interested in a
full-fledged bookkeeping system. I've been through three in the past two
years and finally my accountant told me I was never to touch a
bookkeeping system or even do my own bookkeeping because it's gonna cost
me more for him to untangle my mistakes that it will be for him to do it
for me (yes, I'm that bad at it).

There is so much on the net, everybody can learn bookkeeping and working
with your own data gives you the best impression of how your
organization is doing.

You mean
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape_SVG_vs._plain_SVG ? And
Adobe software also puts a lot of binary code in SVG, I've noticed that
exploring SVG's from WikiPedia - perhaps bitmap previews. In Inkscape,
the XML editor (Edit > XML Editor of Shift+Ctrl+x) shows all the extra
entries.

But I assume LO simply ignores these namespaces and parses only true SVG
code. No problems so far except for funny positioning in LO, caused by
bad sized pages in SVG, Inkscape, File > Document Properties > Resize
page... > Resize page to drawing. May it be that that causes problems in LO?

Hi lalitadatta

What Tom writes below are very good points. I can understand that it may
be a bit too much detail but it is valuable information for the school
involved. It really puzzles me why schools teach concepts based on MS
with a lock in policy while there is so much better software available
for free as in freedom and price, running on almost every operating
system and being implemented on large scale in a professional
environment. In short: Software you want students to work with.

In my opinion you would do the school, the parents and not at least the
students a favour by handing over this mail to the school/teacher involved.

Having said that, my daughter is using OpenOffice and LibreOffice for 9
years now. She is starting with her master and never used MS Office -
despite all efforts of the schools and universities to force her into MS
Office - for example by mandating MS Word style sheets for a thesis.

The school/teacher is welcome on this list or personal if questions
arise and I really hope you hand this over though it does not answer
your question directly.

Concerning hardware in addition to what is said by others: Don't expect
miracles from the T100 but it should be able to do the job. Lack of
internal memory will force your daughter in time to move larger files to
a usb-disk or stick - i.e. movies in paticular. There are also models
with more memory, 64GB. You may want to (let someone) remove all
unneeded pre-installed software you get for "free" since this will free
memory and increases performance.

Best regards, Wiebe

used - for example it only supports single user input at a time rather
than being able to handle multiple users. Some of it's restrictions
can be by-passed if you dig deep enough but it's probably better to
use something that is designed to be "the right tool for the job"

is to use any of the others later in life.

However it is still good to learn. There are key concepts and
generalities that are the same or very similar. Those concepts are
often difficult for people to grasp. It's possibly easier to
understand some of it if you have watched "The Matrix".

The main problem would be with trying to use any example files she is
given or that she builds on Access.

It might be possible for her to use Base to do some of her exercises
but most of it will take some initiative to adapt what they ask for in
order to fit.

For example Base is best when used with an external back-end but for
the exercises she will probably be better off using the internal
back-end. Anything teaching about Access probably wont mention
back-end vs front-end at all - which is one reason why it might be
handy to have watched "The Matrix" (but only to get the rough idea of
what it's about rather than needing to watch t closely - mostly
the bit about the cat and the spoon).

The link says: "2014-12-01 14:20:51 UTC Adjusted in 4.3, 4.4 4.5 master,
and now a final 4.2.8 releases."

I can confirm this bug is still in version 4.3.3.2 - the up to date
version for Ubuntu 14.10. Dragging cells to another sheet tab gives
strange errors and results. I'll wait for an update but if it is a
showstopper for Jay he may want to use backports.

On Xubuntu 14.10 key F11 works just fine for "Styles and Formatting".
Just out of the box. LibreOffice Version: 4.3.3.2. So I guess an update
is an option.

Sleeping better now, itch is gone, hope screen dump arrives too. And
again, thanks for all suggestions and great alternatives.

Rather than use Calc, I recommend using Base with a simple database.
You will need one table (table1) containing four fields: Description,
Amount, LedgerCode, and PK (primary key)
Then you will need a query to obtain your results. the SQL for the
query is

Select SUM("Amount"), "LedgerCode" FROM table1 GROUP BY "LedgerCode"
ORDER BY "LedgerCode"

Together with Stefan's solution - could even be combined - I am
grateful. So for now GnuCash. Thanks, I am going to experiment with both
suggestions for educational purposes. Still missing an answer in a sense
of straight formulas in Calc for a relative simple problem if we skip
the amount of lines that could make it complex.

GnuCash... haven't used it for so long that I forgot it did exist. Nice
suggestion, already installed it for experimenting.

I am a Calc abuser. For example, I made a tailored invoice system
because there was nothing on the market for my specific needs. It runs
for 10 years now, contains many thousands of records in text tables and
never disappointed me. I know it shouldn't be done in Calc, it is grown
over the years with the intention to make it a database after testing -
it never happened.

It sounds like you are trying to set-up 2 new systems to cross-check
against each other. This sounds like a complete nightmare and likely to
create tons of trouble.

You're probably right. The current solution offers me in time or cloud
accounting or getting a SQL server. None is an option. So GnuCash for
2015 or a year later.

Thanks for your comprehensive answer.

[libreoffice-users] calc and bookkeeping

2014-12-07 Thread Wiebe van der Worp

First post, not sure it is the right place, hi there!

For 2015 I would like to keep a shadow bookkeeping in Calc in order to
check our bookkeeping program for a while.

Input: In order to keep things simple: three columns with Description,
Amount and a LedgerCode.

Output: Sums per LedgerCode

Several solutions are thinkable of, such as conditional testing and
lookups. However, if the list grows and contains thousands of lines it
will influence performance.

The question: What is the most efficient approach in order to keep the
sheet alive after adding record 2384?

Example:
LedgerCode: 1, 2, 3
---
1 € 100,00
2 € 65,00
3 € 22,00
---
Description Amount LedgerCode
booking 1 € 100,001
booking 2 € 50,00 2
booking 3 € 20,00 3
booking 4 € 10,00 2
booking 5 € 5,00 2
booking 6 € 2,00 3
