If it's bundled as a local library inside your application rather than
globally what's really the issue here? You ship updates if required like
any other part of your application. Surely that's the future of Java
deployment anyway?!

AW: Netbeans 9.0 Final Release - Update Center

2018-08-08 Thread Alexander Faust
„Waiting for a long time for this version” should not be a reproach. I don’t
need the Netbeans 9 IDE features.
My team develops a software application (java) which is based on the Netbeans
Platform RCP and we have shipped our latest release with Netbeans 8.2 as base.
Almost every customer downloads the latest java runtime (JRE9 / 10) but our
application runs only with JRE8 because the underlying Netbeans Platform.
An alternative would be of course to bundle the JRE in the installer, but I'm
not a fan of that. Because there is always a static obsolete runtime / hotspot
with possible security leaks on the machine. Is it currently possible to run
Netbeans 9 Platform with JRE9 / JRE10 or is only the IDE support available for
that?

Thanks Geertjan for the link. I’ve add the 8.2 Netbeans Distribution update
center and could install “JavaScript2 Kit / JSON”, but the imports /
dependencies in my sourcecode could not be resolved. Although the plugins were
unpacked in the cluster webcommon.

But yes Jake I am also an “longtime user/fan" 

Don't want to sound like I'm trolling, but why exactly were you waiting a long
time for this version? I'm using 8.2 and it's quite fine for PHP development.
If there's something you expected to see in v9 then you should have also been
aware of the development and caveats as Geertjan mentioned.

That being said, perhaps " I waited a long time for this version" is just a
friendly attempt attempt at saying "longtime user/fan...?"

Excellent idea. The best thing is to sign up to the dev mailing list and
discuss this there — that’s the place to discuss working on Apache NetBeans
vs using it, which is what this mailing list is for. Looking forward to
seeing/hearing you on the calls!

Issue registering to netbeans.org

2018-08-08 Thread Marco Andries
Hi,

As the plugins portal still has to be moved to Apache, I am trying to create a
new account (developm...@itextpdf.com) in netbeans.org to publish a plugin
created at iText.
The problem is that I don't receive a verification mail.
On the mailing lists archive from July I have read that it's best to wait until
the plugins portal has been moved (thread from the 6th of July) but how long
would this take?

Best regards,
Marco

Netbeans 9.0 Final Release - Update Center

2018-08-08 Thread Alexander Faust
Hello,

I waited a long time for this version. Is this really the final release version
of Netbeans 9.0?
I can't find many plugins (Available Plugins) in the update center.
Why contains the "Netbeans Distibution UAC" only 2-3 available plugins after

For example I need the plugins "JavaScript2 Kit" / "JavaScript2 JSON" and their

When are these plugins available for Netbeans9?

But just be aware that 9.0 officially only supports Java SE. To use C/C++,
you'll need to install the related 8.2 plugins and they should work fine,
though it's possible there could be problems:

I'll download 9.0 release and try. Thank you. Haven't noticed it.

And org.netbeans.modules.cnd.utils.CndUtils implies you're using C/C++? You
must have explicitly installed that.

Are you sure you are using Apache NetBeans (incubating) 9.0?

This is where you get it from:

Native packaging with OpenJDK

2018-08-08 Thread R. Diez
Hi all:

Oracle is changing the licensing of its JRE, so I am considering switching over
to OpenJDK. These are a few questions I can think about:

1) Does NetBeans 9 work well with OpenJDK? The docs for the older NetBeans 8
say that it does not.

I develop on Ubuntu 16.04, which does have OpenJDK 8 in the standard repository
now. But I also need to test under Microsoft Windows.

2) Where is the best place to get OpenJDK binaries for Windows for NetBeans?

Is there one with an auto-updater?

3) I know that NetBeans has native packaging, but that generates an installer.
Is there a way to generate a portable application?

I want the user to just double-click to run the application, without installing
anything. That would be like double-clicking a .jar file, but bundling a JVM
(JRE, not the full JDK), in case the user has none installed.

A bonus would be the ability to generate portable applications for Windows from
within Linux.

4) If NetBeans' native packaging under Windows bundles components from the
installed Oracle JDK into the generated installer, will that violate Oracle's
new licensing?

Thanks in advance,
  rdiez
