Re: Hi, I'm wondering about ODF in comparison to DOCX

2023-02-16 Thread PCS

Microsoft’s exclusivity is good reason for everybody to get rid of MS Office
and use a productivity suite like OpenOffice or LibreOffice that has file types
that are widely accessible - MS Office is no better than OO and LO, perhaps it
has more features theoretically but I never found anything I wasn’t able to do
in OO or LO, and it is definitely not worth the subscription pricing, I had it
for several years because our school system requires students to use MS Office,
it is possible to use OO or LO instead of MS Office but is a bit inconvenient,
so because the children had an education licence that we didn’t have to pay for
we used MS Office, but I was glad to be rid of it when there were no more
students in the house, it is slow to boot, a huge pain when a file
automatically opens in MS Office because you forgot to tell it to use OO or LO,
and it is inconvenient to use c.f. OO and LO, perhaps just a matter of
familiarity but I think MS Office really is more clunky than OO and LO, so when
the children finished High School I uninstalled MS Office even before the Ed.
licence ended.

However, I’ve almost entirely moved on from word processors, I only use OO or
LO for spreadsheets and use Scrivener for almost all of my writing. But I
hardly do any business writing these days, you would need a WP for that.

2023-02-16 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.

Microsoft have done their best to make it impossible for others to create .docx
files.

Apache OpenOffice can save files in the older .doc format. LibreOffice
(www.libreoffice.org) can save files in the .docx format, but the process isn't
perfect. It usually works fine for simple documents.

If you save your files as .odt or .doc, users of MS Word will be able to open
them.

The reason I installed OpenOffice is because my dad recommended it when I
was facing an issue with the copy of MS Office that we had. It is quite an
annoyance however that the DOCX files when opened with OpenWriter have to
be converted to ODF inorder to be saved. We typically use Windows and MS
Office is just shipped with it usually. I want to guess that this is also
an online compatible filetype as GMail and Whatsapp are able to open it.
However, I have not had the chance to test ODF and would like to know why
the software forces this conversion and ontop of that states there will be

The reason I installed OpenOffice is because my dad recommended it when I
was facing an issue with the copy of MS Office that we had. It is quite an
annoyance however that the DOCX files when opened with OpenWriter have to
be converted to ODF inorder to be saved. We typically use Windows and MS
Office is just shipped with it usually. I want to guess that this is also
an online compatible filetype as GMail and Whatsapp are able to open it.
However, I have not had the chance to test ODF and would like to know why
the software forces this conversion and ontop of that states there will be
loss of something when saving in this format.

MUST be selected when creating the PDF from the LibreOffice document.

this embeds the ODF inside the PDF.

The PDF can then be opened and edit in LibreOffice just as if it was an ODT

In OpenOffice it works when you install the PDF Import Extension
<https://www.arielch.org/aoo/aoo-pdf-import/>.

So yes, LibreOffice can edit PDF but it must be a particular type of PDF.

Open the .docx file and save as .doc file.

Not so far as I know.

For #1, I .docx files can always be read using Word online by creating a

.docx

files can have features that don't translate to the .doc format. Keeping

Imho you have a wide choice on Tools, if you need MS Support:

# WPS Office

# Free Office (Free Variant of Softmaker Office)

# G Suite from Google
<https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/best-microsoft-office-alternatives/#no1>

# Neo Office

# iWorks (Mac only)

The Market is rich on Solutions.

And most of them have also support for ODT Format.

Some you have to pay, others are Free.

AFAIK the quality varies, you should inform yourself.

On the development list, we discuss modern MS Office Formats from time

But currently the Discussions are maybe more a bundle of Ideas then a

This my personal personal position and is not an aligned development list.

This does not help you much, but maybe it is nice to have some

hello.
openoffice now supports import and exportt of files to odt and doc and
some other format like html, txt, rtf etc.
but if you need exporting as docx, i recommend you to install libreoffice.
it even supports as docx format!

libreoffice is one fork of openoffice and most of there features are the same.
but libreoffice has more options in compare to openoffice.
because libreoffice' license is mozilla public license if i am correct.

Would also like to add that as long as MS Office continues to support

need for OpenOffice to save in the newer file formats (.docx, .xlsx, and

It has been stated previously on this thread that developer resources

That's simply untrue, of course. OpenOffice (Writer) can save text

Hi Tony. Originally it was for ideological reasons (so as not to appear to
endorse Microsoft's format), but I think that is now long passed as a
justification. LibreOffice has implemented this capability and I understand
it was (and remains) a lot of work, so I'd guess that today the main
obstacle is lack of developers capable of major features. If you or anyone
you know are able to implement this I'm sure the developers would welcome
you with open arms.

Well, I think that it clearly tells how this discussion has evolved.
No need to further feed the troll.
docx and OOXML is a recurrent hot topic. I think that it has been clearly
demonstrated that AOO can open docx, period.
If some want to think otherwise and express that, they should just remember
that such falsehoods are stored in the mailing list and they will reflect for a
long time how wrong their contributions in the list can be.

not complete BS - I have encountered .docx files I cannot open. if I
then load them up to google-docs, they open fine and I can save them
as .odt or whatever. I'd say out of about 300 .docx files I've dealt

However, the .doc format from earlier Microsoft Write programs is
readable with very little if any format difference from the later .docx
format. Anyone with the software to write .docx files should have no
problem reading .doc files.

If you want or need to save and send as docx, take a look at TextMaker,
from SoftMaker Office. Part of an office suite that includes the word
processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation app.

There's a free cut-down version, and a pay version. I think it's worth
paying for, and have done so. Present version is 2016. TextMaker reads
/and writes/ a whole batch of formats. And it doesn't

make you study up and learn a lot of crap about formatting to get your
work done!

Sony,

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, this is a desirable feature. I don't think there is any longer any
serious question about that.

The reality is that Apache OpenOffice, a volunteer-developed software product,
does not have the means to provide the feature at this time and cannot plan on
it.

If that changes, there will be prominent notice.

In general, I have found lurking beartraps when converting presentations from
one application to another.

I had a simple one today that I initially did in Keynote on my Mac. I exported
it as .pptx and opened it in Open Office. The title slide was mangled [the
lower line was inserted at the left of the slide - vertically. I created a new
one in OO and then saved it as PPT. I then opened it up in Office 2012 on the
mac and found another formatting issue where a table had gotten mangled [column
widths 'adjusted'].

Please understand that many great feature in open source software had

BTW, This is not an advisory or promotional thread of LibreOffice. I too
find that offensive. Also, It's generally known that doc is a standard

You can use LibreOffice to save .DOCX. However, whenever possible, you
should use plain .DOC, due to incompatibilities even within Microsoft
Office.

BTW, please keep that religious nonsense off this list. Many people,

Nasrin Khaksar,

Thank you for your request.

Apache OpenOffice does not produce docx files. There is no effort to provide
docx output at this time.

There are free products that do feature interoperable support for docx and the
other OOXML formats (xslx, pptx, etc.).

Users who make us of such products can give suggestions based on their
experience. I do not use any of those for working in docx so I have no

Good fortune in your quest.

When you want to open a .docx file, don't open OO; instead open Windows
Explorer (OR some other file manager program), and locate the file.
Next right-click on the file-name, choose Open With, Navigate to the
desired progam (Microsoft Word?), check "Always use this program to open
files of this type, and click OK. This will transfer the
'file-association' from OO to your desired choice of program. Hope this

Apache Open Office hasn't got an export filter to .docx. Why do you
need such? If the recipient owns a new MS Office, it can read .odt
files. If the recipient has an old MS Office, you should use .doc. For
your own purpose you should always use .odt and only convert on
demand, if a recipient forces you to use another file format.

The office suites have differences in their capabilities, which
prevent, that the .odt and .docx formats are 100% convertible to each
other. So there is always a risc in converting.

LibreOffice has got .docx export filters via www.osb-alliance.de.
Maybe you install LibreOffice in addition.

Or you install MS Office. If you have got a valid license already,
what is the problem?

Kind regards
Regina
As a side note, I do have LibreOffice (LO) installed, which means that I
am able to save in the DOCX format, but, I still opt for DOC if
permissible because DOC is better supported than DOCX. I am not saying
that I have had problems exporting as DOCX when I have done it, just
that I rarely need DOCX format.

If you have a hard requirement for producing DOCX formats, install LO.
If you are able to use DOC formats, you have that with AOO (Apache
OpenOffice).

If you have very special case formatting in your documents, it is
possible that you must use exactly the same version of MS Word as your
target audience uses since there are often discrepancies in corner cases
such as certain positioning of floating images and frames. In this case
you are always best served to verify that the target application is used
to open and test the document for proper rendering. Many years ago I had
issues in this regard, so I simply changed how I chose to format the
document and I used methods that translated well into the target format.
That was long enough ago that it may be like recommending that you bring
an extra 5 tires with you for your trip to Florida because the rubber is
bad and you will likely have a bunch of flats. The roads and the rubber
are better than 100 years ago and that advice is no longer required. I
have no idea how it applies to the current batch of software, but, I am
always paranoid.

2015-02-01 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Martin,

Apache OpenOffice does not export to OOXML formats (including
Microsoft Office .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx forms of OOXML). There
is only provision for saving to the older formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt).

Current versions of LibreOffice do support export as well as import
And that might work for your needs to interchange using the OOXML-
based Office formats.

Either way, I recommend running side-by-side with Microsoft Office
until you are satisfied that there is adequate fidelity and feature
preservation when you need to employ Microsoft Office formats.

Apache Open Office hasn't got an export filter to .docx. Why do you need
such? If the recipient owns a new MS Office, it can read .odt files. If
the recipient has an old MS Office, you should use .doc. For your own
purpose you should always use .odt and only convert on demand, if a
recipient forces you to use another file format.

The office suites have differences in their capabilities, which prevent,
that the .odt and .docx formats are 100% convertible to each other. So
there is always a risc in converting.

LibreOffice has got .docx export filters via www.osb-alliance.de. Maybe
you install LibreOffice in addition.

Or you install MS Office. If you have got a valid license already, what
is the problem?

Kind regards
Regina

This is worth investigating too. Is it possible that we have a problem
