Trouble

2014-04-17 Thread Charles Sanders
When I try to open OpenOffice, I get this message:

“The last time you opened OpenOffice, it unexpectedly quit while reopening
windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to
reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself.”

The box gives me two options: don’t reopen and reopen

When I click on either option, nothing happens and the box does not go away.

And I am unable to open OpenOffice.

i hope you can give me some help. My computer is a 2013 iMac.

On recent versions of Mac OS X it might happen, especially after a "Force quit", that the following error message appears:
"Restore Windows - The application OpenOffice.org was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to
restore its windows again?". If you cannot get rid of it: Option-click the "Go" menu; choose "Library" from the

If you are using Windows, start TaskManager (ctrl shift Esc) and kill any

document trouble

2017-08-19 Thread Charles
Hi,

I am needing to open several documents that I have saved in the past,
however I am not able to do so. When I open the Open Office application,
and I click on the drop down menu indicated by the arrow next to "open", I
see the documents that I need to open. However, when I click on the
documents, it says that "this document does not exist". Not only is that
on my most recent ones that I need to work on, but also on many other
documents as well. It says that the documents are "shortcuts". I am not
sure what that means, however what i do know is that I have opened and
closed these few documents several times, all which I have saved each and
every time. Please let me know the best route for me to take ASAP.

Thank you,

trouble with printing

2016-01-25 Thread Paulus Kruijer
Hello,

I typed a three pages document and when I printed the three pages it went on
and on with a text I could not read. Next time instead of using "all"( pages) I
typed in 1-3 pages and it worked. When I opened my document I noticed that
there were more then 3 pages. I tried to get rid of them, but I did not
succeed. How is it possible that there are more pages open in my document,
while I only typed three pages?
Can some one help me so it does not happened again?

Kind regards,

Paulus Kruijer

Trouble with Calc

2017-05-13 Thread Bill Dillinger

Hello,
I can't seem to manage Calc with even a simple problem. I am trying to
read and work with a spreadsheet made from a .csv file with columns of
numbers. I really have tried to read and work with the HELP file.

First I could not add 4 numbers but with lots of tries found that it
seemed to be because all my numbers ended in .0 and when I did a global
replace of .0 with nothing I could then add numbers. Once I did that I
was able to compute an average and then copy the formula to other places
in the spreadsheet. I first did try formatting the number field but that
didn't seem to help. If someone could tell me why I can't use numbers
ending in .0 I would be interested.

Second my current problem is I cannot find the spread of 4 numbers. I
tried =MAX(C2:C3;C4;C5)-MIN(C2;C3;C4:C5) and it worked! Then when I
copied that formula into a new location to get
=MAX(C6;C7;C8;C9)-MIN(C6;C7;C8;C9) it gives me the incorrect value 0. If
I copy or type the formula into any other cell it will not work.

If anyone knows what my problem is I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Bill Dillinger

I am inclined to believe that you moved the documents from the location
where originally saved to another folder.

If you go to the folder where it currently resides and click on it it
should launch the document. After that you can access it from the drop down
menu for recent docs.

First of all, you should tell us Your Operating System and version and
the OpenOffice version you use.
Secondly it's nice to know which program you have the problem with e.g.

Then what do you see when you use Page Preview.
This all helps us to help you.

It sounds like you may have downloaded from some third party site. You
should go to www.openoffice.org or one of the mirrors to make sure you

You need to go to the official site OpenOffice.org to download the software,
you will be redirected to SourceForge. net, the official mirror site. When you
download from the official site you do not get malware downloaded.

Before you download a clean version of the software you need to run your

that I was able to compute an average and then copy the formula to
other places in the spreadsheet. I first did try formatting the number
field but that didn't seem to help. If someone could tell me why I
can't use numbers ending in .0 I would be interested.

First thing you should check is to see if the number is really a number.
Sometimes when you open a CSV file the numbers
are imported as text. It's good practise to tick the box "Detect special
numbers" when you open or import CSV files.
It's easy to check if a number is imported as text by selecting a cell
look at the top bar if the number is preceded with ` e.g.

`123 it is a text field. Changing the format doesn't help.
You could do two things:
1 deleting all ` in the cells which doesn't make sense if you have a
lot of numbers to change

2 start from scratch and check the "Detect special numbers" box

Second my current problem is I cannot find the spread of 4 numbers. I
tried =MAX(C2:C3;C4;C5)-MIN(C2;C3;C4:C5) and it worked! Then when I
copied that formula into a new location to get
=MAX(C6;C7;C8;C9)-MIN(C6;C7;C8;C9) it gives me the incorrect value 0.
If I copy or type the formula into any other cell it will not work.

If anyone knows what my problem is I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Re: Trouble with Calc

2017-05-15 Thread Bill Dillinger

Hello,
I have received helpful suggestions from Brian and Martin and very much
appreciate them. Thanks for the help and any additional notes that may
yet come in. I realize now my original message was not completely clear
because I did not fully understand my problem. As was suggested by both
my problem was due because the numbers in the .csv file were being
brought in as text not numbers.

One suggestion was to click the "Detect special numbers" option when
opening the file. I did try this and it didn't work.
It was suggested to use the function =VALUE(c2) in a new column in Calc
to convert the text to numbers. When I did this I got Err 502.
Then Brian suggested the problem could be due to leading blanks in the
field. This seems to be the real problem. If I remove the leading blanks
in Calc the text becomes numbers. Also if I remove the leading blanks
in the .csv file the fields will be input as numbers.

I would be impractical to remove leading blanks manually through out the
file. I know editor questions are not appropriate to this forum but FYI
I will mention what I have learned so far. Using OpenOffice Writer I see
that the fields start with a tab character. I am working on it but have
not found a way to find and replace the tab character in any of the
editors I have access to on my computer.

Still working on it. Thanks for the help.

In OpenOffice Writer use /Edit /Find and Replace.

In the Find window enter \t
In the Replace window enter whatever you wish to replace it with (in this case,
leave it blank).

Drop down More Options and select Regular expressions, then Replace All.

I think it should. The problem is probably the tab characters that
you have only now referred to.

It was suggested to use the function =VALUE(c2) in a new column in
Calc to convert the text to numbers. When I did this I got Err 502.

This will work if, as we thought, you just had spare blanks in the
text value in the cell. But it seems it will not cope with
(invisible) tab characters there.

If your CSV file has tab characters as well as commas as separators -
and indeed also blanks as spacers - then in the Text Import dialogue
you will need to tick both Tab and Comma as well as to tick "Merge
delimiters" under "Separated by" and also to tick "Detect special numbers".

I trust this helps.

Hi Bill,
I had a similar problem with CSV i.e. with the apostrophie turning the numbers

this pronlem before and I don't know what, if anything, I did differently.

Trouble with text document

2018-08-26 Thread pittmmd

HiI created a document and saved it as a MS Word document for others
to be able to read, open and print it. The way I did this was to _SAVE
AS TYPE_: Microsoft Word 6.0 and got a message saying the document may
contain formatting which cannot be saved in MS Word 6 file format The
resulting document had a file type: Microsoft Word 97-2003.
When I tried to open the MS Word version, I get an error message:
"Read error.  This is not a WinWord97 file."  One other person has
said they can read it but can't print it as it is protected.
I'd appreciate any advice on correcting these issues.
Thanks for your time.

up, saying "Please exit OpenOffice 4.1.9 and the OpenOffice 4.1.9

also make sure that no other user has OpenOffice 4.1.9 open" and if I
hit the OK button or close the window down, it aborts the installation.

Help please, I need to print some OpenOffice files out today for a job I

Joy;

If you are using a Mac this is a known problem documented in the Release
Notes for Version 4.0.1 (quoted below). This was fixed with version 4.1.

On recent versions of Mac OS X it might happen, especially after a
"Force quit", that the following error message appears: "Restore Windows
- The application OpenOffice.org was forced to quit while trying to
restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?".
If you cannot get rid of it: Option-click the "Go" menu; choose
"Library" from the menu to open the folder in the Finder; click on the
folder "Saved Application State"; delete the file
"org.openoffice.script.savedState". See bug 119006 and bug 123681 for
more information.

You can verify that the downloaded file is as it left the OpenOffice code
factory by the methods described in
http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

If your download doesn't pass, do not use it as it is either

I'm not technically proficient, and I'm not sure I understand the language
that you're using, but it's not a matter of verifying whether or not the
particular file downloaded to my PC is corrupted or not. It's a different
matter thus. I can download the Open Office suite from the website; the
problem is that once I download the file and subsequently try to execute it
to make the final install on my PC, nothing happens. This happens over and
over again, not with any one particular Open Office file.

If the downloaded file is corrupt (in any way) it may not install, hence my
suggestion that it be verified for integrity before installation is attempted.

If downloaded files consistently do not install on your computer then one must
look for other causes for this. A usual cause is that you (the current user)
does not have sufficient administrative privileges. Another cause may be that
the computer antivirus will not allow the installation.

Both of these problems can be resolved, but will usually require Administrator
privileges to do so. In that case one needs to log on as Administrator, but to
do this may require that you refer to the person who installed Windows on the
computer, or the IT department.

Thanks to all who responded! I now have an .ods file I can work with.

After I learned to edit the tabs out of my original .csv file I got a
good result. Now it seems that when I reported that leading blanks in
numeric fields were causing me a problem I was mistaken, it was the
tabs. Brian's suggestion in the final paragraph below eliminates the
step of deleting tabs from the input file and gets me a good result.

I think it should. The problem is probably the tab characters that you
have only now referred to.

It was suggested to use the function =VALUE(c2) in a new column in
Calc to convert the text to numbers. When I did this I got Err 502.

This will work if, as we thought, you just had spare blanks in the
text value in the cell. But it seems it will not cope with (invisible)
tab characters there.

If your CSV file has tab characters as well as commas as separators -
and indeed also blanks as spacers - then in the Text Import dialogue
you will need to tick both Tab and Comma as well as to tick "Merge
delimiters" under "Separated by" and also to tick "Detect special
numbers".

I trust this helps.

Try shutting your Windows machine down and turned off, restart and before you
do anything else, try to use the install.  This should be the quickest way t
stop the installer from starting twice.

One of the problems I have always had with windows is that even when I
exit an application, the app does not not fully exit. For some reason,
it stays resident, but not visible. So I have always had to use other
apps to display all running apps, and kill the one that should have died
in the first place.

All;

This sounds more like that the QuickStarter is running. To check go to
Tools->Options->Memory and at the bottom of the dialog window there is
an entry Loan OpenOffice at System Startup. If the check box has a check
mark in it then the QuickStarter is active and needs to be closed before
trying to install a new version.

Most newer systems do not need the QuickStarter running. If the box is
checked, uncheck it and that will turn it off permanently.

Many WindoZE and Mac apps have a setting to keep a small part of the program
running (so it can start up quickly (QuickStarter?) and installing a new
version will hang unless the install program is programmed to search for and
kill the running stub. Apparently OpenOffice does not do this )or at least
consistently).

trouble printing multiple worksheets from one document

2015-08-11 Thread Ingrid W
Hello,

I am creating documents using a template. Each worksheet I add, I insert
using "insert sheet from file". That sheet is a template that I did not
create. I am creating an inventory and each sheet is a list of what is in
that numbered box.

The problem I am having is that I can only print the first page (each
worksheet is a single page). In print preview, only the first page is shown
(page 1 of 1 only).

I have created several documents with dozens of worksheets in each. I'm in
a bit of a panic to get them all printed. Can you offer any tips?

Thank you,
Ingrid

I'm using OpenOffice.org 3.4.0 on Mac OS 10.10.4

This document covers much the same ground as the previous document. It will be

It's very likely that your first sheet has a print range defined, so
that only some part of that sheet will actually print. Perhaps there
are some parts used for intermediate calculations that do not need to
appear in the printed version. If you have a print range defined
anywhere in a document, this limits what happens for the entire
document - so if your inserted sheets do not also have print ranges
defined, nothing in them will print.

I have created several documents with dozens of worksheets in each.
I'm in a bit of a panic to get them all printed. Can you offer any tips?

If my guess is correct, you have two options:

o Remove the print range from the sheet that is printing. To do this,
go to Format | Print Ranges > | Remove. This will enable all sheets
to print, but will allow parts of the first sheet to print that were
not printing before and maybe you don't want.

o If you do need to restrict what prints from the first sheet using
its print range, you will need to add similar print ranges to all the
other sheets that you need to print. Do this for each sheet by
selecting its relevant parts and then going to Format | Print Ranges > | Add.

I trust this helps.

It sounds to me like you want to print multiple sheets.
Do the following:

File / Print
The print dialog box should show up
By default, under "Range and copies", it has "Selected sheets" selected.
Click on the entry above that, "All sheets"
Then click Print
