You problem may or may not be local but importing should work.
Therefore, I suggest that you enter an issue into Issue
Tracker as this is the best way to have problems such as this evaluated.

If you haven't already registered, do the following:

 1. To file an issue you must register with OOo by clicking the
My Pages tab and selecting the Register link
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/Join
 2. Fill in your information
 3. Reply to the confirmation email that will be sent to the address
you provided.
 4. Once you have confirmed, go to www.openoffice.org again

 5. And click on the "My Pages" tab from which you can file and find
issues.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is important that you file
any examples with the issue to ensure your need is understood.

As you have suggested I submitted an issue to OOo.
It is a follow-on to already existing issue 4147.

2006-03-12 Thread GregChi
OOo ver 2.0 8964/Win98se

Attempting to auto replace 1/3 with (U+2153 char)
Special char menu has substituted this 'JAN 25 1994' icon/font for
most chars after (U+007F char).
Where is it coming from??
Are special characters related to the fonts in win98se?
At one time I had a font set added that inserted first in the fonts
list & caused a similar problem, but that was corrected before ver 2.0
Using 'insert/special character' works as a manual fix..

Auto correct/replace/special character has many 'Jan 25 1994'

Marcos, I just got one too. I guess one Brian.Williams has moved on and
they have just closed his user account, which he presumably used to

Other than that, could you please configure your mailer to not send HTML

very irritating and makes your messages very hard to read, particularly
since it is tiled across and down my screen. It's also a bandwidth hog.

Doug, are you sure you're in Page view and not Web view? What you're
describing sounds awfully like what I see in Web view. Otherwise I can't
work out where you're getting this 16cm height from.

Using the default DL template, the text printed on the envelope is set
at least 1cm in from the physical edge of the envelope, so it should
print OK. Where is this zero margin?

Unfortunately I can't verify that what I see is what is printed, I can
only check what I think OOo will print by printing to a PDF file on my
system and viewing the result in Adobe reader.

JRE is Sun's Java Runtime Environment. Openoffice.org (OOo) requires it for
its wizards (File > Wizards) and for its database (Base). There may be a
few other things that need it also, but basically OOo will run quite well
without JRE unless you are going to use what I have mentioned. If you feel
from what I have written that you will need JRE then download the Windows
plus JRE. Otherwise, download only the window's version of OOo.

[users] RE. extras not loading

Hello,

Thanks for the reply regarding the issue with the extras on the second
CD and the fact that I need to move them to the HD manually. Can you
provide me with specific information on which folders they need to be
moved to, or direct me to a site that will provide the information. I
am happy to move files from the 2nd CD to the HD, I just need to know
what files need to be moved to which folders. I took a look at the XP
Open Office folders, and it is not obvious to me where the extras need
to be stuffed.

Thanks for additional directions!!

Re: [users] Adapting envelope template

2006-03-12 Thread Doug Laidlaw
I think that the problem is that the template shows a fixed height of 16 cm
while the envelope itself has a height of 11 cm, excluding the flap.

The kit you mentioned was a help, but it tells me that my envelope needs to be
rotated 180 degrees when it doesn't. The orientation is correct as it is. I
created a template from scratch with a height of only 11 cm, and it was
exactly the same. Because I am using a laser printer, the printer margin
cannot be zero.

The only solution I can find is to print the envelope with the flap open and
with a piece of of paper inserted to make the envelope the size that OO wants
it to be. A distinct problem is that the envelope template opens with the
last address printed on it, not the address from the corresponding letter, as
Word does. So far, I have been keeping Word just to print envelopes, but
that is no longer an option. I am using windowed envelopes whenever
possible, but that is a workaround, not a fix.

The envelope I am first prompted to use is C6, which I don't like, but perhaps
it is better supported.

Doug.

Question. What is the setting in Tools > Options > Language settings >

according to your environment. Likewise for any templates. If they are
set correctly for pt-br then I suggest that you enter an issue into

 1. To file an issue you must register with OOo by clicking the

To just the French dictionaries and thesaurus in your English version,
go to File -> Wizards... -> Install New Dictionaries ... Select the
language you want the wizard to use, then follow the instructions. (It's
likely to make some silly noises about wanting to upgrade the wizard,
asking you to place the new version in a folder, and then not be able to
find it, but then jumps past this idiocy and provides you with access to
lists of dictionaries.}

If you want an entire French version, language packs are available which
allow you to turn on and turn off French menus and help files and so

However the non-English language packs and releases for version 2.0.2
are not yet available. You may be able to find information at

Yes you can using custom installation. While it does not specifically

It really doesn't matter which site you choose. Having several download

If controlling and tracking formatting of documents is important to
you, you really need to take the time to investigate styles rather than
pursuing the Reveal Codes path. Styles give you better control and more
rapid changes through a document.

I mainly use OO for simple letters and so on, but on occasions where
formatting is important, styles do make a big difference.

Hi,

My name is João Francisco and I recently have
installed OpenOffice 2.0 with selected language pt-BR.

I run a station wich has an non-US keyboard, the

My X server is correctly configured and I have other

Keyboard.

But for some reason wich is not clear to me OpenOffice
2.0, even the one installed with pt-BR menus ignores
the keyboard layout and insists in the US

I would like to know if somebody knows what is going

find so I can correct this nuissance.

2006-03-12 Thread Larry Alkoff
I am using OpenOffice 2.0.2 under Slackware Linux and came across this
url from OO marketing department discussing importing Lotus 123 files
into OO Calc among other things.

The web page titled:
OpenOffice.org: The Open Office Suite Guide to New Features from
Marketing 2/2005

at this url:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/2.0/featureguide.html

discusses the ability of OpenOffice Calc to import Lotus 123 files along
with a list of other imrpovements.

However, this import does not work in OO 2.0.2. Is it going to be
implemented? Has anyone heard of this?

When I try to import a Lotus 123 or wks file, the first box comes in but
nothing else.

If you don't like OpenOffice and don't like MS Word, is there any Word
Processor you do like? If so, then of course you can use it. Yet perhaps
you just need to become more familiar with OpenOffice to see its
virtues. Almost all complex applications have a learning curve and most
of us have been frustrated by new applications that won't do things
exactly they way we want think they should be done.

Help is basically helpless, and rarely tells the
reader what to do. When it does, it is often wrong or
at least ineffectual.

OOo Help is sometimes over concise. But I have often used it to my
profit. I will return to this point later.

Here are two of the most basic questions, which I
cannot find answers to.

1) How do I set the margins? The instructions in Help
do not help, not only because they are quite vague,
but what they do say to do does not work. (I go into
Format, Page, and set the margins, but it has no
effect on the document.)

Format -> Page is effects only the current page (or currently selected
pages), not the entire document, unless you have previously selected the
entire document. "Page" means Page formatting, not entire "Document"
formatting, unless you first select your entire document. OOo Writer is
not so primitive as to force the same margins or page settings on an
entire document.

A more structured solution is to press F11 to bring up the StyleList,
select the fourth icon on the Stylelist toolbar, select the "Default"
page style, right-click, select "Modify" and change the margins there.

Also, the current page style appears in the second display box in the
status bar at the bottom of an OOo Writer window. Right-clicking on that
box provides a list of available pages from which you can select a
different Page Style which will be immediately apply to the current page
or to the selected pages. Double-clicking on the Page Style box brings
up the dialog box for modifying the current page style, including
setting margins.

You can create a new default template with the "Default" page style
margin settings as you prefer and all future new documents will have the
"Default" page style set to those same margin settings. Similarly you
can change the margins and other features in the other page styles and
include those changes in your default template.

2) How do I change the default font away from the
awful, extremely outdated, Times New Roman? No matter
what I do, that repulsive typeface keep reappearing as
the default. I am ready to eliminate it from my list
of fonts, if that is the only way to end its
domination of the default.

Go to Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org Writer -> Basic Fonts (Western)
to change default Writer fonts at the top level of the style hierarchy.

Changes made here will cascade down.

You can also change them in the Stylelist (accessed via F11). Selecting
the first item provides a list of paragraph styles and selecting
"Hierarchical" in the list box at the foot of the Stylelist shows
clearly the current style hierarchy so that you can see which styles are
likely to be affected by any change that you make to a style higher in
the hierarchy. The top level paragraph styles are the same paragraph
styles listed in Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org Write -> Basic Fonts
(Western).

Both of these questions are so basic, yet have proven
impossible for me to answer, that it shows how
non-intuitive and difficult to use your product is.

There are not hundreds of people posting these same problems. On the
other hand, people, including myself, sometimes have odd difficulties
with the most trivial matters.

A difficulty many new users of OOo Writer have is that they skip over
anything to do with styles in the help and documentation, as
non-essential, as a complexity avoided by them up to know whenever they
have encountered it. Unfortunately for this kind of thinking, OOo Writer
is very style-based in the way it is set up. And generally, non-style
based word processing, web-publishing, and hard-publishing is today
mostly considered as clunky and out-of-date as you consider the Times
New Roman font to be.

You can, if you wish, provide constructive commentary on the Help files
at the main OpenOffice.org site, entering bug comments on the help
files, making clear what you found confusing. It is often difficult for
someone who knows something well to understand what might confuse a
newcomer and constructive criticism is usually appreciated.

This works for me using 2.0.1. What version are you using?

I'm guessing that what you are looking for is to be able to change the default
settings for any new documents you create. Existing documents already have
all their attributes defined and were fixed when you saved them.

The help (for 2.0.1) under defaults;templates seems to be sufficient except
for two extra comments. When you create an empty document to act as the
default template, I found that it is best first to File->Save As giving it an
OpenDocument Text Template (.ott) extension to create the template where you
save all your templates. And when it refers to "category list" in the
File->Template->Organize dialog, they mean the left hand pane of that dialog;
the panes are not labeled.

You can then save the template to include all your favorite languages, fonts,
page styles, paragraph styles etc.

1) Format -> Page -> Page
From that tab you should be able to set he margins of your document. It

From here you should be able to change the defualt font style.

To Whom It May Concern,

I just recently downloaded the free version of StarOffice, and I love it. I

It's nice to know there are some companies out there that are not just in it

I wouldn't hold my breath. The problem is that the basic model or
paradigm of a document is radically different between WordPerfect and
OpenOffice.org (and MSWord for that matter). And WordPerfect is the odd
man out in this regard. The result is that "Reveal Codes" doesn't really
make much sense in the context of OOo. It's like spark plugs for a
diesel engine or feathers on a cat. So the best you can hope for is
something like Ian's macro that *simulates* WordPerfect-style Reveal
Codes. That's because there simply are no "codes" to reveal.

I don't know how much further explanation you need or want, but my
understanding is that WordPerfect uses a "stream" model where a document
is just a long string of characters with formatting codes interspersed
to effect the desired formatting. OOo uses an object model where each
element of the document (paragraphs, characters, pages, frames) is a
distinct entity with a complete set of attributes describing it's
formatting.

Hope this helps more than it confuses. :)

Not really. What I had in mind is the option to view control and
formatting codes as in WP. Many times I might change formatting or
other options and forgot where they got changed. By looking at the
codes, I can find and edit the document much easier than by other
methods. The links provided by [EMAIL PROTECTED] in this
thread seem to do what I want. We'll see.

Thanks for the response. It appears that it may be that for which I am
looking. I'll have to play with it for a while. And keep hoping that
the programmers of OO will deem it a worthy function to incorporate in a
future release.

[users] not even able to make it work

2006-03-12 Thread Fabienne Montouchet
Hello,

I have tried 2 times to download ooo (2.0 version) and finally cannot even open
it.

A few troubles encountered : I have downloaded the application, decompressed,
successfully installed. But when I tried to open an application, launching is
stopped. I have tried to reinstalled, to fix several time, finally start again
the whole procedure et still nothing after having spent hours on it.

I'm not very happy with open office. When I used to have version 1.0, it was so
slow to open ...

And now I had some hope that with a 2.0 version it could be improved but no
success.

Any suggestion before I become mad ?

Thanks

James,

OOo Writer will allow insertion of animated GIFs but no tool in the
suite will create them so you question is a bit off-topic for this list.
I do not have a Mac but a quick google search produced the following
result:
Results 1 - 50 of about 107,000 for how to create animated gifs under
macosx?. (0.50 seconds)

In the top 10 from this search,
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10438 Carbon
GIFbuilder is mentioned as the best free tool for the job. I did not
check further but I'll bet there are others.

I have never noticed this problem so I suggest that you enter an issue
into Issue Tracker as this is the best way to have problems such as this
evaluated.

Please note that users@openoffice.org is a mailing list and the best
email address you can use when you have a users problem or question
about OpenOffice.org. However please note that it is a moderated email
list and most replies *only* go to the mailing list so you should really
consider subscribing by sending an email to

too many emails then you can read the messages to these lists on

the Lucida Calligraphy font is not one that is included via File >

commercial font. In this case, I would think that you would purchase the
font and install in the manner required by your OS whatever this is. OOo
will then be able to use it.

OOo does not employ reveal codes. Nonetheless one of our users has
created a macro that simulates these. Please see
http://documentation.openoffice.org/thirdparty.html and
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/hillview/OOo/ for this macro. I know it

Re: [users] OpenOffice 2.0.0 extras not loading

2006-03-12 Thread Alan Frayer
The second CD has an autorun program that was not correctly setup for
the CD... it's in the ISO, so it isn't likely to be caused by your CD
distributor. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future release, but the
contents are all accessible and usable... you simply don't have a fancy
interface to copy the desired files to your hard drive.

Roger wrote:

Hello,

I am running Windows XP, and got a 2 CD set of OpenOffice from

on it, which loaded fine on XP. The second CD has clip art, docs,
etc, which I would like to get loaded and integrated into the base
OpenOffice apps (so the extras are accessible via the standard
menus). I can 'open' the CD and see that the art, etc is there, so
the disk seems fine. The second disk doesn't, however, seem to want
to load on its own, and I assume that it has to be invoked by the
system or in some other way that is not obvious to me. How do I proceed.

I will guess you downloaded an English language version and now want to
use it in Spanish. In this case, I suggest that you install the Spanish
language pack and then you can switch between languages. CHeck
http://es.openoffice.org/ for the pack and if it is not there get the
pack from
http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/ If you
have 2.0.2, then you want the pack /2.0.2rc4/ is the correct one.

What are Reveal Codes? Does View -> Nonprinting Characters provide what you
want? In OOo, text has attributes that are defined by styles.

Languages in OpenOffice

To obtain the relevant dictionaries, go to
File -> Wizards -> Install new dictionaries
and download the ones you want.

To set the default language for your installation, go to
Tools -> Options -> Language Settings / Languages
and set the default for all your documents. If there is a
dictionary for your selection, there will be a tick mark against it.

It is important to remember that language is an attribute of the text
of a document, and can be set differently in different parts of
the same document. This allows foreign language quotes to be separately
checked against the appropriate dictionary.

To set the default for a document that is different from the
default setting for all other documents, when you have opened
the document (or started a new one) go to the Default style
and change it there. F11 (or Format -> Styles and Formatting) brings up
the style list. Right click on Default (or the root style for your document)
go to Modify -> Font tab where you can set the language for this style
and will be carried down to other styles derived from it unless otherwise
changed.

To change the language for a piece of text, highlight the text and go to
Format -> Character -> Font tab (or right click -> Character -> Font)
where you can set the language for just that portion of text.

I read several other messages posted on this problem.

Hi Patrice,
Import a graphic does not make sense. You really want to do is to insert a
graphic : "Insert" -> "Picture" -> "From File"

Thanks for your answer.
Oups,! yes I meant (and I did) "insert", sorry !
and the problem was there (with "insert").

In fact I did more experiments and I found that *it is the specific jpeg file*
that I want
to insert which causes problem: it is converted by convert (from ImageMagik
package under WinXP)
from and eps file and I believe that the conversion was not perfect.
Using other jpeg files, **all is ok**.
So excuse me for this question: the filter is there, and if the file is ok, all
is going right!

Thanks a lot one more time to all people working on OpenOffice!!

Sorry George,
In my haste to repond I did not read your question correctly. What you are
looking for cannot be done thru paths. Perhaps adding a macro to the default
template for each type of document that opens the Save As dialog in the
specific directory per document type will work for you.
