[users] OTL files - Out Text files?
Here is a question. I have a Bible file in a OTL type of file. It is an Outline Text type of document. Using NoteTab Light, I get a frame that has the Books listed and a frame with the Book's verses. Click on the Book and it brings up its verses, not any other part of the OTL file. In OOo, I read in the OTL file and it becomes one continuous page, no outlines. Has anyone worked with an OTL file? Is there a way to read in an Outlined Text document into OOo and get the correct formated sections? At 58,307 lines in the file, it is much easier to show it in the Outline format, then one continuous page. it uses inline commands in the documents like; = V4 Outline MultiLine NoSorting TabWidth=30 H=King James Bible H= Genesis Personally, I have never see such a document. I wonder if it is a format that began it the DOS days or an early word processing DOS Text format. I can send you directly the file and an image what it looks like. Or I can send you the files plus NoteTab Light. (you can download NoteTab Light from www.downloads.com) Windows NotePad does not show it. Neither does: EmEditor, OpenOffice.org Write, and MS Word. Only NoteTab Light so far. XP does not even associate that file to NoteTab Light. I had to make the association. I always try to read unknow file formats in that text editor as my default option. I use OpenOffice.org for my Office stuff, KompoZer for my HTML stuff, NoteTab Light for my plain text stuff like Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScripts for web sites or just plain TXT files types. SO can anyone help? Anyone used OTL files before? Anyway to get OOo to have one frame show the Outline Headings and another to show the text of that outlined section? Tim L. At 08:01 20/10/2008 -0600, Floyd Beaver wrote: In Calc when I type in a number like a part number, it automatically destroys my entry and makes it a date. I tried changing the format to number and it still ruins the spreadsheet by making the part number a date. It seems to work correctly if I format the part number column as text, but if Calc automatically turns all numbers to a date, it will have no useful value as a program. I never had this problem with 2.4 It doesn't help to say a number like a part number: if your numbers are indeed plain numbers, Calc will not do what you describe, of course. What format do your part numbers have? If they include such things as points, hyphens, or slashes and your cell format is Number, then - depending on your locale - Calc may indeed interpret your values as dates and convert them appropriately. This is documented, so it is not a bug: it is a feature! (Oh, and Calc does not turn[] all numbers to a date.) You say that you can achieve what you want by formatting the cells as text, and this is indeed what you should do. Another way to achieve the same result is to precede the entered text with an apostrophe: this is a signal to Calc that you want your entry to appear as text and to disable automatic conversion to date format. Note that, if you have custom quotes enabled under AutoCorrect you will need to disable this or else to type Ctrl+Z to undo this correction after typing the apostrophe. It's also worth saying that anyway you really do need to ensure that your values are entered as text in situations like this. Your part number is presumably a string of characters, many of which may be digits. But you do not want this to be represented as a number (any more than a date), as this may be rounded and would be displayed to a chosen number of digits. 12.5 is presumably a different part number from 12.50, but they are the same number. There is also a smallish limit to how many digits you can store in a number; this doesn't apply to strings of digits as text. So your discovered solution - formatting the cells as text - is exactly the one you should be using. (I suspect that millions of OpenOffice users out there may disagree that Calc will have no useful value as a program.) I trust this helps. It doesn't look like yours, and none of them are exactly right. *Your PDF:* - Check boxes are gone - I can't input things on the empty lines (it was possible with the original file) - Empty lines are positioned a bit too high, maybe 1 or 2 mm *My PDF:* - Check boxes are replaced by an r with a different font - I can't input things on the empty lines - Some lines are too long (maybe a font issue) So there is still no way to fill in a PDF form and save it properly… (I've tried a few other applications, but no luck so far) J.R. Nor do I think you will be able to with the extension; I don't think it's meant for that. When I have to fill out forms like this (for me US tax forms are a good example), I open the form in Adobe Reader (8), fill out the form, and then print it to a cups-pdf virtual printer. That saves the filled out form in PDF. I've found that to me _much_ easier than trying to use PDFEdit and other such pdf editors (other than actual Adobe Acrobat of course). On Windows you should be able to do the same by printing the filled out form to PDFCreator. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[users] Installation Instructions for 3.0 / Linux
I downloaded the tar.gz file for 64-bit Debian Linux and untarred it. That created a folder OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358 containing 48 .deb files, a license file and a readme file, plus one shell script update. The readme said nothing about how to install it. I ran the shell script, but it flashed a terminal window for half a second and then disappeared. Note that I want to migrate settings from my current 2.4.1, but I want to leave 2.4.1 installed as is. [users] OOo3.0.0: Error in writing sub-document content.xml
I have installed OpenOffice.org version 3.0.0, build 9358, on a Debian amd-64 laptop. I have just written a writer document, but I cannot save it. I have managed to save in MS Office 97/2000 format, though. The error message does not help in any way, it does not point at any particular place in the text, it does not specify the nature of the error, there is no partially written file that I could examine (or I could not find it). My .xsession-errors does not contain anything from OOo, but that could be due to a feature of the display manager (gdm). Whenever I start a browser (unrelated to OOo) the .xsession-errors fills up with repeated messages until gdm writes ...Too much output, ignoring rest To get around this gdm feature, I have tried to attach to the soffice process with strace, to see if it writes anything to stdout or stderr. It does not seem to do. (The output is so voluminous and difficult to navigate, but searching for the regular expression write.*([12], did not find anything, while write.*([0-9]*, did.) I do observe that OOo writes to files in /tmp, like /tmp/svf1p.tmp/svg7f.tmp, but it subsequently deletes the files before I can have a chance to examine their contents for any hints. The document contains parts in different languages, that is the only thing that may be unusual, that I am aware of. (Languages English (UK), French (fr), Norwegian (two variants, Bokmål and Nynorsk). However, I am pretty sure I have saved several times along the way. I have had the application open for several days, and it would be no small amount of work lost if I loose everything. How can I get past this? Should I report a bug? I have found a few messages on the web containing (almost) the same error message, but it applied to 2.4. To report, how do I do? [users] Mailing labels to Avery 5260
I am trying to print labels from a database table to a template for mailing labels I have followed the instructions from OOo help 1.Choose File - New - Labels to open the Labels dialog. 2.Select the format of the label sheets you want to print on. Remember to mark Synchronize contents on the Options tab. 3.Click New Document. 4.When you see the label document, open the data source view by choosing View - Data Sources. 5.In the data source view, select your address data source table. 6.Drag the data fields needed for the Address individually into the top left label. For example, click on the column header NAME and, keeping the mouse button depressed, drag it into the label. This inserts a field. Put the fields in order to complete the address in the first label at top left. 7.Place the cursor at the last text position (after the last field) in the first label. 8.Choose Insert - Fields - Other, and go to the Database tab. 9.Select the type Next record, click on Insert and then on Close. 10.You can now synchronize the labels. Click on the Synchronize Labels button in the small window. 11.In the data source view, select the records for which you would like address stickers, by clicking on the row headers to the left. Use the Shift or Ctrl key in the usual way to select several records at the same time. 12.On the Table Data bar, click the Data to Fields icon. 13.You can then save and/or print the label document. When you choose to print the document, you will be asked if you want to print a form letter. Answer Yes to open the Mail Merge dialog. When I get to step 10 I get only one page of records with all the same information. I have tried step 11 and 12 but get the same result I have 4,018 more records selected. Is there better information on how to print labels elsewhere. Thanks in advance for any help - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The error message does not help in any way, it does not point at any particular place in the text, it does not specify the nature of the error, there is no partially written file that I could examine (or I could not find it). I found something. Saving as html, there was a stray LI outside any UL../UL pair. In the OOo window (still open) the paragraph has a custom paragraph style ehrc-bullet, which in turn refers to the custom list style in the Numbering page. Applying a different style to that paragraph, it becomes possible to save the document. 1. However, the paragraph shows in the OOo writer window without any bullet. Yes, now I remember. I created the style with the intention of applying it to any paragraph that need a bullet in front of it. I have tried to apply specific styles to all paragraphs in the document, and do all formatting through Modify... in the context menu on the style in the Styles and Formatting window. All my paragraphs have custom styles. I created them by first formatting a paragraph manually, then selecting a word in the paragraph, then dragging the selection to the Paragraph styles selector at the top of the Styles and Formatting window. The paragraph used to create ehrc-bullet *had* a bullet. However, when I applied the ehcr-bullet style to the first paragraph in what I thought should become another list, no bullet appeared. (I had already written a couple of list items as ordinary paragraphs, and wanted to convert them to a list.) I created a custom list style and linked to it in the Numbering tab of the paragraph style, in the Numbering Style field. Yet no bullet. Now I know that some kind of bullets on got set internally, since a) I get this error when saving, and b) there is LI when I save as HTML. (I have to say I find the help in the application lacking, because it never explains the *architecture* of the system of styles. E.g, if I apply a list style, will that remove the paragraph style? In other words, is a list style just another paragraph style that happens to have the bullet and numbering properties set? I did find something about this at openoffice.org. Why has nothing of the stuff on the wiki pages been incorporated in the help? Even the wiki was just a beginning, and I now have problems finding back to it... Perhaps users on this list (myself included) can team up to help here. If we try to generalize from our experiences, and others point out counterexamples, we should arrive at a description that works. Or, does this already exist?) Re: [users] OTL files - Out Text files?
Original Message From: web at work [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2008 10:17:07 -0400 Here is a question. Tim L. [users] Open Office as default to open .doc files
Dear Users, I want Open Office 3.0 to be my default programme to open Power Point and Microsoft .doc files. In 2.4 on installation you had the choice of making it the default programme (program!). No such option with version 3.0 The result is when I double click on a .doc e-mail attachment, instead of opening it with Open Office, it brings up a message with the file path of the attachment then invalid menu handle. I can open Open Office Writer and then trace the file path through to the attachment, and then open it, but is there a way of organising Open Office 3.0 so that it is, as was version 2.4, the automatic default program to open such files? Remember to mark Synchronize contents on the Options tab. Now check the Address box next to Label text and then the database, table, and database fields. On the database fields, click the left arrow to add them to the Address box. 3.Click New Document. Only after you get all of the database fields the way you like them. Now select the PDF printer just to test first; the result _should_ be a pdf will all of the labels on multiple pages. Again: it is well worth the trouble of setting up a virtual PDF printer _first_ so that you'll be able to test without going through a ton of ink and paper. After you find that it looks correct to the PDF, they print only the first 1-2 pages so that you can check for label alignment etc. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Slower to get its first screen up vs. Word, but then it takes 2-3 minutes before Word lets me ask it to open a file or type in new stuff. OOo/writer does not make we wait that long to start working. The field names you see at step 10 *should* be the same on each label. If, when you get to step 12, you see many copies of one record from your database instead of one copy of each of many records, then you have not properly carried out steps 7, 8, and 9. It is an Outline Text type of document. snip SO can anyone help? Anyone used OTL files before? Anyway to get OOo to have one frame show the Outline Headings and another to show the text of that outlined section? Tim L. (web at work) who lost all of my DOS books (and much more references) in my last move. OTL is the file extension that Eric G.V. Fookes (Fookes Software) chose to identify the OuTLine feature he built into the NoteTab software. These are just plain text, with no embedded formatting codes in the true sense. Other than the presence of the first line in an OTL file and the equal sign, used as a tag by the NoteTab software, there is nothing special about these text files. In fact if you open one in any other plain text editor (eg. Windows Notepad), remove just the first line (eg. = V4 Outline MultiLine NoSorting TabWidth=30) and save it, NoteTab will open it as it would any other plain text file, with no side panel. The side panel displaying the headings/Books is hard coded into NoteTab. So there is no reason why OOo, or any other software should display these files as anything other than plain text. Unless, for some reason, that other software is emulating NoteTab. I have a few ideas how something similar might be replicated in Writer and somebody (not me), with the necessary skills, could possibly even write an otl to odt converter. However, I don't see this as an award winning feature for OOo. Dave So I lucked out with reading them in the proper program after all. I do like the Outline Headings displayed in the left site panel. I tried changing the format to number and it still ruins the spreadsheet by making the part number a date. I never had this problem with 2.4 Floyd Floyd -- As Brian said, it would help greatly in understanding what is going on if you could give examples of the part number being changed to a date. Calc certainly doesn't turn all numbers into dates, like you claimed. If your version really does do that, there is clearly something amiss. And as was stated, it sounds like you've identified the solution -- format the part number column as text. Part numbers should be treated as text anyway. It wouldn't make any sense to perform numerical computations on them (like adding up a column of part numbers, or multiplying the part number by 2, etc.). Kind of like phone numbers -- other than being composed of numbers, there is no real numerical meaning to them. You wouldn't multiply two of them together, divide one by the other, add 10 to one of them, etc. and expect them to have any meaning as a phone number any more. So it would help if you replied to the list and gave examples of the part numbers that are being changed. Although it sounds like your problem is solved (format as text), so assuming that continues to prevent your problem, there may be no more need to give any specifics. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Again: it is well worth the trouble of setting up a virtual PDF printer _first_ so that you'll be able to test without going through a ton of ink and paper. After you find that it looks correct to the PDF, they print only the first 1-2 pages so that you can check for label alignment etc. YES, YES, YES and more so. ANY output that needs definitive alignment and/or special attention to layout should be printed to PostScript in Linux and PDF in Windows and viewed (with a critical eye) as many times as needed before going to 'paper'. Use gv in Linux and Acro(whatever) in Microsoft to view results. Zoom and pan are available for assessing critical areas. I print to desktop labels and 36 x 500' and 54 x 250' (yep! inches wide by feet long) rasters and without NoOp's suggestion the price tag quickly gets well out of hand. Label type alignment test page is printed in gray scale to save color ink. (Replacing the ink in the plotters can run $600.00 to over $1000.00 per reload. And the shelf life for those cartridges isn't that great. So skip the stock up on sale idea.) NoOp definitely has the right suggestion. I would add a hint: For label work, put three periods in each corner of the master (top left) label and replicate per sheet and print that to regular cheep paper and use an outside window in the daytime as the light table and place the printed '...'s over the label sheet on first try. When they fall right, proceed to check a page of actual output as NoOp has said. Won't hurt to have a ruler handy. Any distance corrections are those to move the printed sheet TO THE correct alignment (LEFT IS NEGATIVE AS IS UP) and are applied to margins, offsets, etc. Steve [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [users] Bad Bug in 3.0 windoze
I thought that you could turn that off... (that is when Calc converts an entered number into a date) All that I could find, however, was that you can precede the number with a single quote so that it is entered as text. very sad... If it is indeed a number, what happens if you then change the format from date back to a normal number? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [users] Re: OOo3.0.0: Error in writing sub-document content.xml
You appear to be an advanced user, so I will make this assumption while answering... You discuss styles. If you have a document, and a series of steps that will reproduce the problem, please file a bug report and attache the document in question that is used for those steps. They really do fix these problems. There is a learning curve on how to do this, but take a look here and see how it goes http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/query.cgi Enrique Perez-Terron wrote: On Mon, 2008-10-20 at 23:20 +0200, Enrique Perez-Terron wrote: I found something. No, applying a list style will not change the paragraph style. I can set many things in a paragraph style, including character formatting, and list styles. I can then manually change formatting, or apply other styles on top of the paragraph style without affecting the paragraph style. I can also select text and choose to set it back to default formatting... In other words, is a list style just another paragraph style that happens to have the bullet and numbering properties set? I can set a list style inside a paragraph style, but that is different than applying a list style manually. I have never bothered to do that, but I understand why you would want to. I create paragraph styles, character styles, frame styles, numbering styles, etc I then apply them individually. Why? 1. I create a table of contents using paragraph styles. 2. I have reasons for wanting to use their standard outline styles (heading 1, heading 2, etc...), but wanting to set my own numbering so that I have sections such as 1. hello 1.1 hello sub thingy 1.2 another sub thing... . . . 2. Hello again . . . Appendix A. Explaining hello I do this by manually applying a _chapters numbering style for regular chapters, and _appendix to the appendix headings. Works great. I did find something about this at openoffice.org. Why has nothing of the stuff on the wiki pages been incorporated in the help? Even the wiki was just a beginning, and I now have problems finding back to it... Perhaps users on this list (myself included) can team up to help here. [users] Adapting to 3.0
OK, took the plunge and installed 3.0 on Ubuntu Hardy x86_64. There are a few issues I can't figure out. First, when I launch OOo I get a splash screen asking me what kind of document I want. I use Calc, Impress, Draw and Base about one time out of a thousand and 999 times out of a thousand I want Writer. How do I disable this so that when I launch Writer it just automatically launches Writer? Second, when I close OOo Writer it does not save the size and position of the window. Every time I launch OOo I have to drag the window to the correct size for my display and personal taste. OOo 2.4.1 automatically saved the last window size and position when I exited the program. Is there a button to fix this so it saves the window size and position? If so, where did they hide it? Or is this a bug? Third, although I told it to migrate my settings from 2.4.1, it failed to migrate a lot of things. For example, I had to go in and recreate the default document template. Also none of my toolbar settings were saved. This is not too big a deal - both are easily recreated, but I can't get rid of the right-to-left and left-to-right icons on the formatting toolbar. In the customizing window they are deselected, but the icons are still on the toolbar. I got rid of all the other unwanted icons, but these two persist.
