Sorry Andy and Johnny I disappeared but will be onto this again later today.
I will try anything you said since my last reply. Yes the paragraphs use
numbering.

The last thing I tried was to copy one of the paras from my original
document into my test document and here are the test results:

First I just wanted to make sure that my test worked as I expected:

1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style.

Now I copied one of the numbered paras from my original document into the
test document and redid each of the above 2 tests:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change are not seen or made to the new para.

Yes..

H intersting well here's some sort of break through.

I just started a new document with 2 paras and these steps work

   1. Select one of my paras
   2. Cntrl+M
   3. F11 (Styles and Formatting menu pops up)
   4. Right click on "Default"
   5. I Select "Modify" and para style window pops up
   6. I set the indents that I want (now Im trying Before text 2.00cm)
   7. Click OK (no changes seen on doc)
   8. Selecdt "Update Style" (still no changes seen on doc)
   9. Close (Styles and Formatting menu, still no changes seen on doc)

so then the question is why doesn't it work on my original document with
50

paras ?

Do your paragraphs use any kind of Numbering or some kind of list with

I need some help with how to change the formatting (e.g. first line

and

"Edit
Paragraph Style" do not work for me and the help wasn't very helpful
:(

Thanks

Unfortunately I have the Swedish version but hopefully I can help you

anyway, if I understand your problem correctly.

I don't know exactly what you edited at ”Edit paragraph style”, but
this

worked for me:
F11 → Right click the style you want to edit → Select ”Ändra…”
(should be
something like ”Change…” in English) → Click the tab called ”Indrag
och

avstånd” (probably something like ”Indentation and spacing”) → set
”Första
raden” (”First row” or ”First line”, I'd guess) to something, such as
1,00
cm (or 1.00 cm if ”.” is your decimal separator).

All your paragraphs using that style should now be changed
accordingly,
unless you did some format settings within a paragraph or so, I think
you
can ”ruin” a paragraph that way… If so, try to reset the paragraph to
the

default style first, by clicking ”Format → Default formatting” or by
Ctrl+m,
then apply your style again to the same paragraph. You can apply a
style

from the F11 window by setting the cursor in the paragraph and then
double
click a style in the F11 window.

Also note that if you use Go-OO, F11 means full screen, not the styles
and
formatting window, but it seems like you use the usual OpenOffice.org
version.

If you try this and it still doesn't work, exactly what happens?

Johnny

Doesn't work. These are my steps:

  1. First I did what you suggested, selected my paragraph and Format >

Default Formatting which gave me Indent *Before text* 1.27cm and
*First

  Line* -0.64cm

When I do that, I get 0,00 cm everywhere.

  2. Format > Paragraph and changed Indent *Before text* 2.00cm and
*First

Line* -0.13cm This changed the selected para to what I wanted the
  formatting to be.

Now you changed the format of that particular paragraph, not the style.

  3. F11 > double click Default and at this point the para formatting

changes to *Before text* 1.27cm and *First Line* -0.64cm which is not
what I want. So I must be telling it to change to the Default rather
than me
wanting to cahnge the default style if you know what I mean.

Yes, now you told it to use the default style once again.

But what about if you change the actual style or create a new one that
suits your needs? Create a new style by right click an existing one (in
the
F11 window) and select ”New style”, or maybe it is just ”New…”. Give
the new
style a name at the Administration tab and change whatever else you
want to
change in the other tabs. Now assign it to the paragraphs that you want
it

on.

But as I said in another message, I don't think this works for numbered
paragraphs, but I am not 100% sure about that.

because all my paras are formatted suing the Default style I want to
change

the indentation of THAT style which I can't seem to do.

right click on style named Default in the F11 window and shows me the
correct new indents that I want but when I select modify nothing happens
:(

Hi,

It seems that the number of lines depends on the height of the window:
OOo sets the cursor almost at the third of the window height. If you
reduce the window height the number of lines is reduced.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I am using Microsoft Windows Vista. In searching around trying to find
which version, I came across an icon on the start menu for Open Office
3.1,

and voila! it opened a new text document, and i could also access all my
current filed documents. Here I've been buried in a bunch of icons that
meant nothing, had really strange names, etc., and it was right there.
 So,

thank you very much! You did lead me to it! I just won't pay any
attention to the icons that pop up when one first opens the computer..
What was happening was that I was missing the opening page for OO, it was
going directly to the second page. i.e. Clicked on the icon on the start
menu; then clicken on Text document and 'file' which opened what I was
looking for. When I selected 'open' or 'new document', then I went to the
window that I found so frustrating. i.e. the icon on the desk top was
skipping that first part, going directly to opening documents.Don't
know

if you can follow all that, but I am a happy camper, and I do thank you.
Have a great weekend! Ellie McCullin

Eleanor,

More information is need. What operating system? I am guessing some
version of Windows. Did you in fact install OOo or just download it? If
it is installed then there should be an icon on your desktop that says
"OpenOffice.org 3.2", without the quotes. Double clicking on that will
start OOo. From the screen that opens select the Text Document icon and a
new blank document will open for you to work on.

If you just downloaded the file there will be a file called something like
"OOo_3.2.1_Win_x86_install_wJRE_en-US.exe" somewhere on your computer, the
default is on the desktop.

Don't feel foolish, this one catches a lot of newbies.

Assuming you are using Windows and have OpenOffice.org correctly installed:
In the Windows Start Menu look under "Programs" or "All Programs" for the
OpenOffice.org folder. In that you will find a link to "Writer" which you can
click.
If you wish to know how to do this from a desktop icon, please ask again. For
any future questions please state your Operating System version and
OpenOffice.org version to inmprove how we may help you.

I recommend you download and read the "Getting Started" manual (despite how
everybody tells you how easy computers are to use, the techniques involved
still need to be learned).

Please, be more specific. Where did you downloaded OOo from, which
version do you have, and which OS do you use? I ask these questions
because what you are looking for should be right next to "New document"

It seems I maybe missing something myself.

If I make a change in the current document then the changes apply. If I

text from the auto-text DT. I then opened the F11 window. Modified the

reopen the file and everything is the way I want.

To use the same styles every time you will need to build a template with

Yes but after click ok and close the F11 window nothing happens :(

If so that should have changed the "default" used when starting a new
document. To use this style in an existing document you need to update the
document.

You made the changes, did they take? Right click on the "default" and
select modify. Are the values as you entered? The "default" styles are
used for new documents, existing documents have to be updated with the
changes.

To update the current document, click the "New Style from Selection" icon
on the upper right of the Styles and Formatting window.

but this then asks me to enter w new style name like as if im cr8ing a new
style but i dont want to do this i just want top change the current default
style indetnation :(

When you click on the icon you have three choices, "New Style from
Selection", "Update Style" and "Load Styles...". The first, as you have
seen wants to create a new style using a current selected text as a
base. The second updates the styles in an open document. The third
allow you to "copy" styles from a template or another document into the
current document.

Then click on the 'Update Style' menu item. That should then make the
needed changes to the document.

You missed this step. The styles used in a document are stored within
the archive as a separate file that defines the styles used within the
document, styles.xml is the file name. You have to use the "Update"
option above to change the settings in this file.

Unfortunately I have the Swedish version but hopefully I can help you
anyway, if I understand your problem correctly.

I don't know exactly what you edited at ”Edit paragraph style”, but this
worked for me:
F11 → Right click the style you want to edit → Select ”Ändra…” (should
be

something like ”Change…” in English) → Click the tab called ”Indrag och
avstånd” (probably something like ”Indentation and spacing”) → set
”Första
raden” (”First row” or ”First line”, I'd guess) to something, such as
1,00

cm (or 1.00 cm if ”.” is your decimal separator).

All your paragraphs using that style should now be changed accordingly,
unless you did some format settings within a paragraph or so, I think
you
can ”ruin” a paragraph that way… If so, try to reset the paragraph to
the
default style first, by clicking ”Format → Default formatting” or by
Ctrl+m,

then apply your style again to the same paragraph. You can apply a style
from the F11 window by setting the cursor in the paragraph and then
double

click a style in the F11 window.

Also note that if you use Go-OO, F11 means full screen, not the styles
and

formatting window, but it seems like you use the usual OpenOffice.org
version.

If you try this and it still doesn't work, exactly what happens?

Create a new style by right click an existing one (in
the F11 window) and select ”New style”, or maybe it is just ”New…”. Give
the new style a name at the Administration tab and change whatever else
you want to change in the other tabs. Now assign it to the paragraphs that
you want it on.

But as I said in another message, I don't think this works for numbered
paragraphs, but I am not 100% sure about that.

Then I think I misunderstood your original question earlier. If you use a
numbered paragraph, I think the usual styles are overridden. I think you
need to right click your paragraph, select "Numbering… blah blah blah”
something and do your settings there. Look at the Position tab. It's a bit
tricky, but experiment with one value at a time and see what happens.

Thanks Andy, I will try to explain my problem.
I started a document and have outline numbered paragraphs with:

indent
 Before Text 1.27cm
 First line -0.64cm

and all paragraphs in the document have this formatting style as defined in
the style named *Default*. Now I want to change this to say:

 indent
 Before Text 2.00cm
 First line -0.13cm

and have this new formatting applied to all paragraphs using the style named
*Default*
**
Hoping I have explained the problem well enough for you to understand.

As I mentioned in my first email I followed the help on the F11 "Styles and
Formatting" and "Edit
Paragraph Style" etc but can't get it to work.

Adam.

If you will send to me direct the requirements I will see what I can do
to help. Just saying something does not work is not enough information
to work with.

Hi Thomas,

Uwe

Thank you for the advice, but I know (how to do) that.
The problem is, I want to scroll ** ONE LINE AT AT TIME** and not larger
blocks of text.

Sorry.

As I said before, in Calc using the down arrow scrolls just **ONE
CELL/LINE AT A TIME**

When Calc can do it, why not Writer?

[users] [Solved] Re: [users] change scroll behavior

2010-09-02 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Thomas Blasejewicz さんは書きました:

Good morning
I am using OO32, the machine(s) I am currently working with run
Win XP.

Whenever I scroll down the screen (or just typing something in
existing
text does the same) and I come to the bottom of the screen, the
cursor

"jumps" between 7-9 lines (I counted them) down. This happens both in
page and web view

Good evening
I am really sorry, but apparently I did not do my homework on this question.
After receiving all the helpful advice here I also did a Google search.
And I found:
In the past many other people have asked the *EXACT* same question I
asked for many years already.

The conclusion:
OO is **NOT** capable/willing of changing that behavior, nor offering
any other options.

I am afraid, that settles it then: I HATE MS Word and AM trying to get
away from MS products altogether, but having to deal with "jitterbugs"
and reorient myself, searching for (d***) cursor is not acceptable.

After staring for +25 years at computer screens my eyesight has
considerably suffered. So, I usually display text
magnified, so I will not have to squint to decipher each individual
word. THAT leaves me with less lines on the screen (21-inch monitor); I
counted: usually around 17-18. Let's say you have 5-6 lines in the top
have of the screen in one language and 6-7 lines in the bottom half in a
different language with a little space in between ... looking at the
bottom shoots the top text portion out of view and vice versa.
And each time the cursor "jumps" - to stay visible as it is claimed - I
have to look for it. At least I could not yet find a way to make the
cursor a bright red spot or so.
I believe I mentioned (western) musical scores before. For +500 years
they *ALWAYS* use FIVE lines and not six, or seven (OpenOffice uses
apparently EIGHT lines) or any other number. There is a VERY WELL
founded reason for that.
I would like to believe, that the people who designed OpenOffice have
their own reasons for choosing 8-line jumps and similarly believe, they
are serving mankind in doing so. (In that case they might want to
consider, why the 5-line musical scores have been so successful!) And
probably both the designers and satisfied users just love the jumping up
and down = jitterbugs.
But I cannot handle this kind of nervous behavior. I guess, that will
make OpenOffice unacceptable as the choice of wordprocessor for my daily
work.
Maybe these complaints may reach the ears of the designers (or is it
programmers?) and eventually produce a change? But considering that this
complaint has been filed many times for more than 5 years already, I
probably should not keep my hopes up too high.

Anyway, I would to thank everybody for trying to help me.
Thank you!

You don't have Thunderbird, which is an email client; you are using
Windows LiveMail. The "attachments" you saw from KAMI were not really
things he attached. As JBF hinted, they are just a parsing of the
email itself, into the text (ATT00039.txt) and KAMI's PGP signature
(signature.asc), by MS LiveMail or MS MimeOLE. Since JBF and I don't
use either Live Mail or Vista we can't be sure, but I'm pretty sure
that's where it comes from. Do you know or work with someone who
knows Vista and Live Mail who can look at this?

John

Interestingly using TBird 3.2.1 on Windows 7 I see NO attachments at all
- until I forward the message when the signature.asc file is seen.
Receiving the message in Outlook 2007 the attachment is clearly visible.
