Depending on what the unique ID is for, in one app I use the date/time
function in the ISO format. If 1S isn't enough graduation, take it down to
milliseconds. Then you have the advanteage of having the date and time each
ID was created and it'll be automatically unique.

To do it manually, enter the number 1 in, say, the cell A1. Then click
in the cell and it should be highlighted, with a small black square
"handle" at the bottom right of the cell. Click and drag that down and
the cells will be filled sequentially.

Are you sure it is Calc? As a rule your not required to have any Unique
entries in a spreadsheet. That is not to say it cannot be done. The
quickest that I can think of is to use numbers, place 1 in the first
cell and hit enter. Then click on the cell, you will see a small box on
the lower right hand corner. Place the mouse pointer on this box, it
changes to a + sign. Press the left mouse button and drag the block
down the column. The numbers will increase as you go down and each will
be different.

A database _is_ required to have a Unique entry or things can get messed
up big time.

Also look for vendors that offer more than just the install software on
a CD. I am not talking
about any claim of support [Except Oracle's offer], but added things
like the latest documentation
files from the side included in the CD.

When I give people a CD with the latest version of OOo, I include the
latest documentation files
from the site, along with any other support documents, templates,
extensions, etc., that I find
useful. I stuff the CD full, and sometimes I add other software like
FireFox, doPDF, and some
great security software that are free to download.

Also make sure you are not charged too much for a CD with freely
downloaded software. I saw
a "person" want $30 for a CD that just had OOo on it. That would leave
$20 or more profit after
the cost of the CD and shipping is taken into account.

Avery still has templates for free. Here is the link to one of them. I
do not know
if it is the same as the "older" Microsoft one, but since Avery makes
labels, their
templates should work. I know that I have used some of their templates

[users] RE: Cassette Sleeve Template?

2010-09-16 Thread Dorothy Fuchs
Harold,

I think I know what you're looking for; here's a URL to a Microsoft template
for music (hope referring to "that" site doesn't get me removed from this list):

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT010144468.aspx#ai:TC001012999|

It's an older template, so Microsoft may not check your system to see if you
have any of their software before permitting the download. They do that for
the newer templates. (I have both Microsoft and OpenOffice on my system.)

If you can't download the template from their site, please let me know, and I
can attach it and send it to you privately. I do a LOT of audiocassettes (for
myself and my nearly-blind mother), and have adapted a template for my
preferences.

Rummaging around on my system, I also found another audio cassette insert
template, which is even older (or perhaps I got it from another place); this
one just has lines (no background image).

Another bit of trivia, some other software and paper distributors call audio
cassette inserts "J-cards" (don't know why).

Hope this helps.

fashioned audio cassette - you know, the ones that came* in c60 (1 hour, 1/2
hour per side), c90 and c120 for recording from one's radio? I've searched high
and low but ...

Ideally the template should have horizontal lines dividing the sleeve into 3
sections (Title, Details and Footer) and a line down the middle dividing it for
details of the two separate sides of the cassette. The size of the various
sections is, of course, critical as the printed result has to be folded along
those horizontal lines to fit 3 sides of the cassette box.

I suspect this is easy to explain: you have a print range defined on
the first sheet. When you copy the sheet, the print range definition
is not carried over.

In the first case, you end up with a print range defined on the first
sheet but not on the second. When you have any print range defined
anywhere in a Calc spreadsheet, only material within a print range is
printed. So your second sheet, without any print range defined, fails
to print at all. Perhaps you expect that a print range affects only
material on the sheet on which it is defined, and that other sheets in
the same spreadsheet will print fully, but this is not so.

In the second case, when you copy the material into a new spreadsheet,
it does not matter that the pasted material is not in a print range
because - so far, at least - you have not defined a print range
anywhere in that new spreadsheet.

I trust this helps.

sheets in the same spreadsheet will print fully, but this is not so.

In the second case, when you copy the material into a new
spreadsheet, it does not matter that the pasted material is not in a
print range because - so far, at least - you have not defined a print
range anywhere in that new spreadsheet.

I trust this helps.

[users] Page break & Print preview in Calc

2010-09-16 Thread AG

Hello list

In OOo3.1 Calc (Debian Lenny), I have copied a spreadsheet created in
Calc over to a new sheet within the same workbook. These are the same
in every respect.

When I go to page-break preview the copied sheet is all greyed out - the
text and numbers are visible, but the background is greyed. When I then
print preview it, there is no display. If I print preview the copied
sheet without first page-break previewing it, again there is no display.

The original first sheet however can both page-break preview and print
preview just fine.

To experiment, I copied over the same sheet into a new workbook and now
it all works as expected. However, I want to keep this contained within
one workbook and work on one while keeping the original unchanged as a
control. But, given the above description I don't trust this to work
reliably unless I know how to correct it.

Interestingly enough, when I repeated the above procedure in the new
workbook, the sheets all page-break and print preview as expected. What
would be helpful, if possible, is:

(a) understanding why this happened in the first workbook but not in the
second, and
(b) how can I fix this without taking the chance that it won't happen if
I copy the sheets into a new workbook?

Can anyone help me to figure this out, because in Excel I can do this
with impunity, but apparently not in Calc.

Thanks for any assistance on this.

AG

Here the large chains have given up on them. I found a small shop that would
sell me a pack of 10 but that's too many. I can't find them in smaller
quantities

Over here in the USA, only the large chain retail stores seems to carry
these cassettes, usually next to the micro cassette for business
micro-cassette
recorders. So maybe they could be found in a business supply shop/store as
well.

Charity shops are reputed to have these available - presumably often used ones.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, blind people apparently retain a need for
them. The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) will sell
you C60s and C90s by post. They appear to have a shop at their
premises in Judd Street - http://tinyurl.com/RNIBJuddSt - where you
may be able to obtain them over the counter.

Why one earth would you need to do that? Does anyone still use
cassettes? I tossed all mine quite a while ago. My VHS cassettes will
be the next to go.

No there is not. But that does not prevent you from getting the
source code and building one for yourself.

Sure and after you´ve done that you can go on and install that truck
motor into your kids tricycle like you always wanted to do ;-)

[users] Cassette Sleeve Template?

2010-09-16 Thread Harold Fuchs
Can anyone point me at a template for Writer to create a "sleeve" for an old
fashioned audio cassette - you know, the ones that came* in c60 (1 hour, 1/2
hour per side), c90 and c120 for recording from one's radio? I've searched
high and low but ...

Ideally the template should have horizontal lines dividing the sleeve into 3
sections (Title, Details and Footer) and a line down the middle dividing it
for details of the two separate sides of the cassette. The size of the
various sections is, of course, critical as the printed result has to be
folded along those horizontal lines to fit 3 sides of the cassette box.
