The 'Versions...' menu item is grayed out for new documents until
after you save a document the first time. After you have saved it,
the Versions... menu item should be available for you to use.
I save it, closed writer and reopened it, opened the doc, and added a

Clicked File. Versions is still grayed out.

 ???

Let me take a guess -- are you saving it in MS Word format? If so, you
can't version it. You can only version it if you save it as an odt file.

That could be it!

I could be wrong (yes, that has actually happened before g), but I

By the way, there are some cases when file extensions are needed in Linux

Can anyone recommend antispam software that works under XP with
Thunderbird? Thunderbird Baysean spam detection isn't effective against
spam that has advertisements in an embedded image.

I use Verizon DSL. This is the only high speed internt available to me.
Their antispam feature has about 20% false positives. I turned it off,
and receive only a little more spam than when I was using it.

Ideally, I would like to have software that has a white list, initially
populated from my address book; a black list, initially populated from
the national known spammer database; that will challenge email senders
who are not in the white list; that has Baysean spam detection and scans
images to detect spam.

Any advice other than use one of the Debian based Linux distros with
Spam Assassin?

There may be my answer. While waiting for an answer, I'll look for a
version of Spam Assassin that works under Windows.

I am aware this is off the topic of OpenOffice.org, which I use
exclusively, and I strongly advocate. Some of you know more about this
than I ever will, so... If any object to this, by all means, send
flames. However, any answer, even a link to a place that might provide
an answer, that will be gratefully and appreciatively received.

Some suggestions...

1) http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls#Image_Spam

2) a filter

Content-type contains multipart/related +
From isnt in my address... [your main address book] +
From isnt in my address... (repeat for other adr bks)

Move message to junk on local folders +
set junk status to junk

3) Install the Spamato TB extension (and disable the inbuilt TB filter).
After training this detects 99% of spam (including the image spam)
and had very few false positives.

Hi,

At one point there was a version of OpenOffice for OS/2 (I believe it

porting it being done by IBM or something rather than the community).
Anyway my question is does anybody know where I can get hold of it for

Thanks

Google is your friend. http://www.google.com search=openoffice+OS/2 will

See http://www.ecomstation.com/openoffice.phtml Last one was 1.1.5 according

Jerry Thompson produced the following on 2/17/2007 4:08 PM:

In one file location I discovered that the attachment I was trying to open
was an .dat extension.

The .DAT extension is often used to indicate a file containing arbitrary
data. Some applications that have a format of their own choosing simply use
.DAT. This means that as a user, you must have your own way to figure out how to
open the file. There is no single way to open or view a .DAT file since there
can many different types of content. The best way is to ask whoever gave you the
file what application should be used to open it.

I happened to receive a call from my son whose work involves computers though
he does not use OpenOffice. He told me he thought MSWord XP would open the
file. It did, though I lost some formatting. I saved it in MSWord XP with a
.doc extension.

While I was working with it, my friend re-sent the file and its parts. He
said, Jerry, after receiving your message I tried to open Chapter #12 and
couldn't. Chapter #11 opened perfectly. The only difference is in Endnotes.

I'll delete these and resend. However, there have been endnotes on several of
the previous article. A mystery for now. I had opened his other documents
beautifully even with endnotes.

I she using a special program to do the endnotes or is that ability built in to
WP?

Now when I click on the attachments he sent to open them, I get a dialog box
that says, This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control
panel. Previously a little box would come up listing programs (including
OpenOffice) from which I could choose one to open the attachment file. I
don't get that choice now. Any idea how to find and make an association in
the Folder Options control panel? I thought we had found a way to remove the

problem? Thanks for helping, JT

You're better off saving the attachment as a file. Then you can use a variety of
things to investigate and tell us what you find.

Hmmm... What matters is not how the comparisons are weighted, but that they can
be reasonably made at all. Users of Writer may wish for some features of
FrameMaker. They may need to adjust to a different logic and layout. However, so
long as they take the time to learn Writer, they can be in little doubt that
they are using software that competes with FrameMaker on its own terms, and wins
as often it loses. Even ignoring the cost and philosophical differences,
OpenOffice.org is clearly an acceptable alternative to FrameMaker.

Create a new document. Save it as usual (no version) . Now
modify it. The Versions option is no longer greyed out and the
modified document can be saved as a new version of the

Is there no way to versionize an existing document?

I find the behavior a little strange. Perhaps it is the
windows version. I am using 2.1 on Linux. I opened a *.odt
file that I created over a year ago. When I opened the File
menu, Versions was NOT grayed out. I then made some changes to
the document and saved those changes using File Versions and
clicking the Save new version button.

Ah, I guess it only works with ODT files!! Drat.

True.

So, three components are involved in the problem:

 1. Internet Explorer because it sets the system-default email
 client;

IE is not involved; Windows *is* involved.

 2. Thunderbird, because it is the luckless email client; 3.
OpenOffice, because it can find Outlook Express but not Thunderbird.

The one thing I'm sure of is that everyone involved will blame
everyone else. If you have the energy and time to pursue this, I
suspect you will have to follow all angles.

I have had some luck getting solutions on the Mozilla forum:
 http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php

If the cause of the problem is Internet Explorer, you may be waiting
a long time for an answer. But you never know your luck. There is a
Google search tool for M$: http://www.google.com/microsoft

I believe this is a M$ issue. I have problems of that kind with my
file associations manager, which definitely seems to favour its own
applications. It is extremely frustrating. :-X

It probably has to do with MS's implementation of MAPI.

I have a Linux OS, so I can use the setting in Tools Options
Internet which evidently does not exist in Windows and Mac versions.

Windows has that, but it does not have Tools Options Internet Email

All the command does is open a compose window for Thunderbird with
the document included as an attachment.

Personally, I would prefer to open the compose window in Thunderbird
and take it from there. I see no great advantage in using the
 OpenOffice command.

Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of
every person's life, freedom of religion affects every individual. State
churches that use government power to support themselves and force their
views on persons of other faiths undermine all our civil rights.
Moreover, state support of the church tends to make the clergy
unresponsive to the people and leads to corruption within religion.
Erecting the wall of separation between church and state, therefore,
is absolutely essential in a free society...

So you had installed the package and removed the files in the file

No, I did not.

Unfortunately basic canÄt cope with this.

You can fix the problem manually if you dare to do so.
First close OOO and the quickstarter (if you use it).
Go to your OOo user directory. Usually you can find it in your
application data directory. In the basic sub directory you can find
two files with extension xlc. First create a backup of them, them load
both of them into an editor (I recommend notepad). Delete all lines that
contain StarXpert_OOOMultiSave. Save the files again. The error should
be gone. If Basic goes haywire you can again shut down OOO (and the
quickstarter) and put the backup files back.

Done. Didn't seem to make any difference.

My fault, sorry. I again had a look on your mail and now I see that the
error points to *share*/uno_packages...

So you must apply the same procedure to the xlc files in share/basic. It
seems that this packages has been installed on admin level.

The parent directory of the one that has the two xlc files does not
contain a share directory.

Try to google for StarXpert. Or ask on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
But perhaps manual editing of the right xlc files does the trick.

Google did not have a download site for the package.

The trouble is that I've deleted all messages preceding that

I don't know how Send as Email not working in 2.04 ended up
as a quest for that MultiSave add-on. Was it because you were
getting some error messages relating to that file when you
tried to send as email?

I think so.

One thing I would probably try if these matters are somehow
entangled is renaming the User directory after shutting down
OpenOffice (and exiting QuickStarter if you have the wretched
thing enabled).

OpenOffice will recreate the folder (with the default
settings, unfortunately) on re-starting. You can copy the
macros sub-folder back later (after shutting down again).

Did that. Still no joy.

Version 2.0.4 has produced what has become the usual crop of

Hadn't noticed it in previous versions so I had never tried it.

So you had installed the package and removed the files in the file
system, but not by deinstalling the package.

A more tedious but perhaps more safe operation would be to install the
package again with the package manager and then immediately deinstall it
again. Should do also (not tested).

Where would I get the package from???

Hello, Everyone
As an experiment I tried the following:
1. Opened up a file in OpenOffice.org 2.0.4.
2. Choose File | Send | Document as E-mail This caused the following
error:
http://www.afolkey2.net/OO-3.jpg
This error, of course, does not specify where to go to set up a working
E-mail configuration.

I get that too when TB is the default Windows email client.

So, I proceeded to do as follows:
3. I went to Tools | Options | Internet | E-mail See screenshot:
http://www.afolkey2.net/OO-2.jpg

I do not have E-mail in that menu!

I have just went back and re-read this entire thread, so please forgive
me if someone already asked you this question before:
Are you saying that their is no E-mail option located at Tools |
Options | Internet | E-mail?

Yes.

---
Problems When Sending Documents as E-mails From OpenOffice.org

When sending a document via 'File - Send - Document as E-mail' or
'Document as PDF Attachment' problems might occur (program
crashes or hangs). This is due to the Windows system file Mapi
(Messaging Application Programming Interface) which causes
problems in some file versions. Unfortunately, the problem cannot
be narrowed down to a certain version number. For more
information visit http://www.microsoft.com to search the

Maybe the ones with troubles sending mail, would mind to take

right-click for the properties and look on the Version-tab to
company and version??

OK. Mine is 109KB, created March 19, 2004.

Product name is Microsoft® Windows® Operating System, version is

Having downloaded the PDF file, I opened OO Writer and asked

No wonder! Writer is neither a PDF viewer or a PDF editor.

It _is_ a PDF creator.

If \n represents a line break entered via SHIFT-ENTER, what
represents a paragraph break entered via ENTER?

Or maybe $ see Help Index Search term regular expressions;list of

Fascinating!

I tried Help Index Search Term Paragraph mark and got this:

Removing Line Breaks
Use the AutoFormat feature to remove line breaks that occur
within sentences. Unwanted line breaks can occur when you copy
text from another source and paste it into a text document.

This AutoFormat feature only works on text that is formatted with
the Default paragraph style.

???

Then I tried search for regular expressions and did not find a
paragraph mark/break character.

Two consecutive EOLs are a blank line ^$ to be replaced with nothing.

Sorry for not being more specific!

Try searching for the regular expression: ^$

Leave replace empty. That removes empty lines.

The regular expressions list in Help says:

^$

Finds an empty paragraph.

Sounds as if you are missing some help.

No, just a few brain cells. If you don't think of the second of
two consecutive newlines are representing an empty paragraph, you
don't think of ^$ as a solution.
