Download the packages you want to upgrade to an empty directory and run from a root terminal/konsole rpm -Uvh *.rpm (there must be a way of doing it with Yast by adding your directory as a package source, but I use the commnad line). rpm will order the packages, check dependencies and upgrade (the U option) the existing ones echoing a hash # (the -h option) as a sort of progress indication (-v means verbose, just to know the process is alive). You may then have to reconfigure the QuickStarter (pointing to the correct directory) if you are upgrading from a 1.x version. The site hosts are also other prepackaged software like Mozilla/Firefox. Hope this helps Thanks Osvaldo. This looks like the same thing that Pierre wrote about in another thread. Just a different URL. I presume that the second largest rpm file on that list is all that is needed to install OOo with U.S. English. Is that correct? I certainly don't need support for a whole bunch of languages. Don Hi Don, Pleased to hear you have not had any problems. However, Victor's issue was related to the Linux installation of OOo. Since the introduction of OOo version 2.0 the installation procedure for Linux is very different to that for Windows. The situation for Linux users is further complicated by the different Linux distributors (eg.SuSE, Ubuntu, etc.) including modified versions of OOo in their distributions, which in some cases do not (by default) install to the same file system locations as the official version. BTW. I notice that your post to this list came through the moderated process, which suggests you are not subscribed. In this case I would have normally CC you direct, but since you responded to another user's post, I guess you must be reading this list through some form of newsgroup. I, too, am a SuSE user. Do you have an answer for Victor's question? I want to upgrade from OOo 2.0 Novell Edition build 2.0.0.1 as released as a part of SuSE 9.3 to the standard OOo version 2.0.3. What do I do in order to avoid the mishmash that Victor reports? Should I completely uninstall the Novell Edition and then install version 2.0.3? If so, what problems will that likely create for me when I later replace SuSE 9.3 with SuSE to 10.1? Will the very process of uninstalling lose any of my data files (I doubt it) or OOo settings (I suspect this could be a problem)? If so, what do I need to save before I uninstall? Should these files be restored to their original directories after installing version 2.0.3? Should I completely uninstall the Novell Edition and then install version 2.0.3? Yes. If so, what problems will that likely create for me when I later replace SuSE 9.3 with SuSE to 10.1? As far as OOo is concerned, I doubt that you will have any major problems. Regarding the change from 9.3 to 10.1, my recommendation would be to wait for 10.2, but that's another story for another list. Arguably, it is better to do a clean install, rather than attempt an update from 9.x to 10.x. Some folks have succeeded, many have experienced considerable problems. Check the SuSE list archives http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/ Will the very process of uninstalling lose any of my data files (I doubt it) or OOo settings (I suspect this could be a problem)? No your data files are safe. Your global settings will probably be lost, but most of your personal settings should be OK, or least recoverable. If so, what do I need to save before I uninstall? I would backup your home OOo directory and any special global configurations you have changed (eg. dictionaries in /openoffice.org2.0/share/dict/ooo. I can't be more specific, because I don't know what customisation you have done. Should these files be restored to their original directories after installing version 2.0.3? No, this is the main problem with the Novell/SuSE edition, they install OOo under /usr, whereas the official edition is installed under /opt. With the exception of your home OOo directory, the original directories will no longer exist, or at least not contain anything useful. What else am I, as an untrained user, in need of knowing? Nothing really. It may seem like a potential horror story, but in reality it's fairly easy to get OOo set up and working the way you want it. Check the SuSE list archives http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/ Wow! All that spam! Wading through it I did find some postings that give me reason to think a second time. I just wish I had not spent the money for 10.1 but better to leave the money wasted than to try to make use of the DVD and find that I have trash. I bought it because the download version is incomplete. They say it is because a dual layer DVD is needed to hold everything. Have they not heard that DVDs are cheap and that a two DVD download would solve that problem? Sorry about the off topic rant. As for /openoffice.org2.0/share/... I have no directory at the root level named openoffice.org2.0 though I do find a subdirectory with that name under /opt I suppose that means that I already have a corrupted version. I think that I did try to install 2.0.2 some time back and since it did not appear to take I assumed that I had made a mistake in installing it and gave up. Now that I see this thread I know better what is going on. Ugh! I've done no customization that required any significant technical knowledge. As for dictionaries, I've done nothing. Should these files be restored to their original directories after installing version 2.0.3? [OT] I suppose the problems I've been having with Wine also result from SuSE doing something non-standard. Around the start of the year there was a security flap regarding WMF. SuSE fixed it for Wine by supplying a year old version which they still insist on pushing down my throat even though I downloaded the official fix for the problem from Winehq.org some six months ago.
