The .rtf operations are not really particularly good at retaining formatting; the difficulty here
may be related to how styles at various levels are handled. If you don't explicitly need that
format, you'd be better off with .odt, .doc, or even exporting to PDF if the recipients don't need
edit capability.

BTW, please keep all discussion on the list (users@openoffice.org) so others can help as needed, and
use plain text only. Messages with graphics can take up a lot of bandwidth, which can be a real
issue for some of the list subscribers.

Any particular reason why you need to export to rtf? In general it is
not a good choice and I would recommend that you either create a pdf (if
you do not need to edit the document further) or .doc if you need to use
it with MS Office Word.

[users] line spacing and other positioning aids

2010-08-21 Thread william drescher
I need to build a template with which I will merge form data.
This is for a OCR form so positioning the data is critical.

Last time I did this, 10 years ago, I was using WordPerfect that
permitted me to set line spacing by 0.01 % of the base amount and
to [advance to x.xx] horizontal spacing in .01 inches.

Perusing the style options, I can't find any way of positioning
fields with anything close to this precision. I presume I am
looking in the wrong places (F11- styles).

I would appreciate any guidance and/or links to articles on this.

Sorry, I was not clear.

I already found the "Line Spacing" box. I set it to zero, but the line
spacing is still between 1.5 and double spacing. That is, I am using a
font set at 12 points, but with the Line Spacing box set to zero the
leading is about 19-20 points or so,

As with the font size problem, you did something. You have possibly
assigned a different style to that section.

- How do I correct the part of the document that is now incorrectly

Place your cursor in the offending area and check what the styles drop
down list displays. If it displays a different style, you have
assigned that style and need to correct it. To determine what style
the rest of your document uses, place your cursor anywhere in the
document that displays correct formatting (it will probably be called
default). Then highlight the offending section and select the same
style that the rest of the document uses.

If that does not work you will probably need someone else to "put
their eyes" on the document, so to speak.

Thanks, Gene. After placing the cursor in the area I needed to change I
went to Edit>Repeat Apply Styles Default and it closed the lines down to
single spacing again.
This may not be the way you suggested, but it worked. So I'm happy. I
can now get on with my document. Your patience is appreciated.

Format>Paragraph>Indents & Spacing and found that the spacing was set at

- Why in the middle of a document did the spacing change from 1 to 1 1/2?

- How do I correct the part of the document that is now incorrectly spaced?

If I am not understanding what Help is telling me then I will appreciate

The following is from the OpenOffice Help file; it should solve your problem.

When you define a paragraph, Paragraph Style, or a Page Style as

you want, you can specify the setting for this grid as a Page Style property.

Check the settings on Ubuntu and their forums. I don't use Ubuntu but
there was a similar issue with Fedora at one time. I know that Fedora
customizes their copy of OOo and I think that Ubuntu does as well but
not sure.

Also confirm that the fonts have not changed. I got burned by font
substitution between two computers last year. The font was substituted
between the computers and changed the formatting.

It could also be a change in the style being used. You may be able to
change the style being used for all the labels. This is one of the best
features of styles.
