Hi Igor,

thanks for your reply it was very clear,

now I got another doubt, apart from having early access to the book and
receiving it's updates, does supporting this campaign implies that I 'll be
paying a cheaper price for the book than what it will cost once it's
officially released?

that was something it was clear on the manning EAP (which I bought for the
t5 book), but I really couldn't figure out if this is also the case or the
benefit of this new EAP is only early access but not a cheaper price.

thanks again,

Finally Long wait is over! I have funded for Printed Book. I am desperately
waiting for more material to master tapestry 5. I know you are still working
on final version but it would be great if you can provide what you have in
pdf format. Not sure what are rules set by indiegogo.com.

Thank you!

Hi Nicolas,

yes, the PDF Perk includes the current manuscript as PDF, alle updates and
the final version of the PDF. I just not sure if I'm allowed to fulfill the
Perks right now. I'min the process of checking that with Indiegogo. The
worst case is that you get your first PDF when the campaign is over.

Do you have any experience with such services? Can you advice any? I found

Chris, the book won't become obsolete once 5.4 is released. The new release

My goal is to cover the most recent version of Tapestry available. Once I

I'm not sure. Is there a way to withdraw a contribution?

I've been a backer on Kickstarter since the Double Fine Adventure thingy
and they mentioned on their forums a handful of transactions failing.
Theoretically people can max out their credit cards or block the cards
before the end of campaign. So there's always a bit of risk involved.

I guessed it was the same: they'll only collect after the campaign is over
and the goal has been reached, since refunding probably introduces fees.

But it seems I guessed wrong. I only just signed up with Indiegogo and
after reading a bit more on the website it seems they do things differently
since they mention something about a refund to users if the goal hasn't
been reached, which might mean they do charge the credit card immediately.
The campaigners can also choose to keep the money if the goal hasn't been
reached, which is also different from Kickstarter.

Re: Tapestry 5 Book EAP Launched

Igor, whats the plan with the pending 5.4. Will the final book incorporate 5.4
or will the book be obsolete as soon as it hits my doormat? I recall you
mentioning about having the freedom to more easily provide updates by not going
with MEAP.

btw I purchased what seems like a long time ago the iPhone developer book from
MEAP and they have held back the final release for a while now because they
went back to their wordprocessor to revise for 5.0err, hmm, now 6.0 is
nearly here :-}

Re: Progress on Tapestry 5 Book

2012-07-27 Thread Alessio Gambi
Oops too late

:$

Sorry for the comments in the email.

Still the content remains valid: Small and frequent publications are cheaper
for the readers, and more convenient for the authors. Furthermore, waiting too
long (almost two years?) for a book on a technology that evolves fast, such as
Tapestry, will benefit no one.

Of course, Igor can always put all his contributions together and release THE
Book.

Last but not least, I think we should form a kind of editorial board or a
reviewing committee or something else to help authors that want to share their
findings/ideas/works about Tapestry. Basically is like writing code and
committers.

We can use the same technologies and processes adopted for managing scientific
publications.

What you think?

There are many many users of Tapestry that are very excited about the book

this is the best thing that could have happened.
I for one, cannot wait to get my hands on it.

On related note:
I hope this project gets ressurected but I understand Tapestry is a labor of
love and a lot of work by all the developers involved and writing a book is
yet another huge task.

I am loving Tapestry and everytime I need it to do something, the answer is
always yes and 90% of the time, the solution is easy. The only hard part is
figuring it out -- the book was something I used to help me out with that.

This is a bummer indeed. If I recall correctly, this was gong to be a
translation from German - so the content actually exists, something must
have fallen through with the translation.

I know for a fact that the NetBeans community has had at least a couple of
'community translated' books. Unfortunately, I don't know German and have
nothing to contribute to such an effort even if it was an option :-(

I believe the project was not purely translation as dutch version was prior
5.2 and the MEAP version was taking into account post 5.2 features and
making comparisons between versions as with the page pooling mechanism and
current singleton pages mechanism.

hope the project recovers somehow

cheers.

I immediately asked for refund from Manning and will buy your book
once ready. While there's always some risk, I agree that Manning
canceling the book at this point is way better for you. Most of the
work is done and publishing via Lulu is simple and may actually allow
you to recover at least some of the investment, which usually is not
the case with most author/publisher deals for the author.

Re: [ANN] Manning Publications translates my Tapestry 5 book

2011-01-25 Thread Igor Drobiazko
I hope the MEAP starts soon. I don't have any official dates, but I'm
pushing Manning to start it.
Let me explain our process in order to give you the feeling of why the MEAP
isn't started yet.

1) Joachim Van der Auwera translates the German manuscript into English
2) After Joachim finished the translation of a chapter, I begin with
proofreading the translation. This is a chance for me to improve the things,
which I don't like in the German book. Often I'm moving content around,
update the contents with 5.2 stuff and provide more details which are not
available in the German book.
3) Once I'm finished, my contact at Manning starts to read the chapter.
Usually there are some improvement suggestions in terms of wording, segues
between chapters, etc.
4) Final step in ironing out a chapter is applying the suggestions provided
by Manning.

As Manning cares very much about the quality, the steps 3) and 4) may be
repeated until we have the feeling that a chapter is good enough. This makes
the process very slow, but ensures that we will have a great book on
Tapestry.

Another great news is that I absolutely don't have any constraints regarding
the number of pages. This is great, as I can provide more details on topics
which has been covered in the German book not at full length.

So, were are we now?

Currently, almost the half of the book (10 chapters) is translated by
Joachim. Chapters 1 - 6 are proofread by me. Chapters 1 - 2 are ready for
MEAP. My contact at Manning is currently reading chapters 3 and 4. Once the
first four chapters are ironed out, we can start the MEAP.

I really hope, the MEAP will start in February. I can't promise anything,
but I'll give my best and push Manning.

I hope the status of the book is more clear now.

The hardcover version of the book will be available starting from Sep 28

I'll make another announcement when the hardcover version is released.

Among other things the book covers :
* Getting Started with Tapestry 5
* Concepts of the framework
* Localization/internationalization
* Creating Forms
* Generation of user interfaces for JavaBeans
* Writing own components and mixins
* Ajax
* Writing tests for Tapestry applications
* Hibernate and Spring integration
* Dependency Injection and Tapestry IoC
* AOP and bytecode manipuation

Special thanks go to Howard and Ulrich Stärk. Howard gave me some hints on
how to write a better book and wrote a foreword.
Ulrich was responsible for the technical review of the book and helped me
 to improve the quality.
