[vchkpw] qmail-smtpd patch

2003-03-12 Thread Abdul Rehman Gani
Hi,

Is anyone aware of a patch for qmail-smtpd that will return a 5xx code if the
rcpt to is a non-existent address/alias on a vpopmail system?

Thanks,

Abdul

That's just a bad idea.. giving a perm error on 'RCPT TO' will result in a short 3-4
lines long perl script that will rand() all your users and you'll get spammed pretty
regulary.
Why do you think VRFY is _not_ supported by qmail?:)
Is that what you really want? naah..

IMHO:
Theres no way the smtpd would know if the user exists or not.
that's qmail-send's job, the qmail-smtpd recives the connection, checks relaying,
rcpthosts and so on.. if it likes it - fine, the message is sent to qmail-send which
decides what to do with it.. local delivery, remote one.. whatever.

when using authdaemon relaying fails => someone who authenticates via imap
won't be able to _send_ mail (unless he/she uses smtp auth or is generally
enabled to send mail (tcp.smtp)

Re: [vchkpw] qmail-smtpd patch

2003-03-12 Thread Brian Kolaci

Check the archives.

There are a few, however they *only* take into account
the vpopmail addresses, not system accounts or aliases or
SMTP relaying. I've just patched mine to handle all cases
however I don't have a patch. BTW, VRFY would be the correct
place for this, however most spam programs ignore the return
on the VRFY command and send it anyway. So in short, you'll
have to write your own custom one to your situation.

At least with the patch, I don't have 10,000 messages in the
outbound queue each day for bounces. Now I rarely get bounces.

Which is the bug that is named in this "advisory"?
I think that must be given more details.
1.3.27 contains some bugfixes so the problem could be solved even upgrading to
1.3.27 (because upgrading to apache2.x is not always a good choice).

Abdul,

the patch you're looking for is at:

www.interazioni.it/qmail

It's been deeply proved and installed by hundreds of people.

There are two versions: one completely compliant to qmail security model,
the other semplified in order to work with TLS.

[vchkpw] Seekable Patch - Bill's Toaster

2003-03-12 Thread jeffkoch

We're using the lastest version of Bill Schupp's Toaster which uses
Vpopmail 5.3.7. From reading the list, doc's, etc. we understand that in
order to process mail using spamc or maildrop from .qmail-default in the
domain directory we need to have the 'seekable patch' installed.

Is this true? Or will maildrop (or spamc) work without this patch.
Secondly, what does the patch do?

Lastly, for Bill - any idea when the toaster will be upgraded to include
Vpopmail 5.3.8 which has the patch?

Did you rebuild vpopmail between when it worked and when it stoped?
Is /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail the correct path?

If the answers are No and Yes respectively, you might need to escape the ''
in the VPOP line. Try making the VPOP line this:

VPOP="| /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail \'\' bounce-no-mailbox"

Also, double check the logic of the conditionals in your mailfilter. I
haven't had a chance to pull it apart, but it doesn't "look right"

[vchkpw] Local and Virtual Users

2003-03-12 Thread Wil Hatfield - HVHM Customer Care
Ok a simple question. For Vpopmail configuration can I use the following
together without difficulty.

--enable-passwd=y --enable-mysql=y

The desired outcome is to allow vpopmail to check both so we can use both
local and virtual users.

TIA

[vchkpw] Recenty security notice

2003-03-12 Thread vol
Hi, everyone.

I just wanted to touch really quickly about the security notice
that was posted here from our news mailing list. First, we'd like
to apologize for it's format. That message was supposed to be destined
for our communications director, but apparently it was accidentally
sent to the news list. It was based, obviously, on our website, as
that's where we had planned to use it. Second, the information within
the notice was not yet ready for publication. What it comes down to,
is that we accidentally released pre-production information, across
the wrong medium, and we apologize to anyone who was concerned about
it's format and/or content.
Hope that clears up some of the confusion :)

Thanks!

Version 5.3.7 and upwards include the seekable patch - its enabled by
default and you can disable it using the --enable-seekable=n configure
option.

The patch makes sure anything piped to vdelivermail is seekable (ie
you can rewind the stream using lseek). If it isnt, it creates a temp
file from the incoming stream and uses that as the input (which is
then "seekable").

Actually, it's spelled "Shupp". : ) And also, the toaster currently
uses 5.3.6, not 5.3.7.

Is this true? Or will maildrop (or spamc) work without this patch.
Secondly, what does the patch do?
As Marcus pointed out, you need 5.3.7, or apply the seekable patch
manually. It makes the input seekable if it's not already.

Lastly, for Bill - any idea when the toaster will be upgraded to
include
Vpopmail 5.3.8 which has the patch?
Well, this question really belongs on the toaster list. But it's about
halfway done. I keep getting distracted by work that actually _pays_
me. ;)

sure, just make certain that this user have the appropriate
permissions to create/modifiy/access data, something like:

GRANT select,insert,update,delete,create,drop
ON your_vpopmail_db.*
TO [EMAIL PROTECTED]
IDENTIFIED BY 'your_pass';

[vchkpw] What is up with mysql

2003-03-12 Thread Geoff Sweet
I installed qmail and mysql and all the installs went correctly. I
installed vpopmail with:

./configure \
  --enable-roaming-users=y \
  --enable-default-domain=whootis.com \
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] \
  --enable-logging=p \
  --enable-defaultquota=5S \
  --enable-ip-alias-domains=n \
  --enable-passwd=n \
  --enable-clear-passwd=y \
  --enable-mysql=y \
  --enable-many-domains=y \
  --enable-auth-logging=y \
  --enable-valias=y

And when I try then to

./vadduser [EMAIL PROTECTED] password

I get the error:

vmysql: sql error[3]: Table 'vpopmail.vpopmail' doesn't exist
Error: Domain does not exist

I know the vpopmail MySQL user has all the privs it needs, cause I can
log in as the user to the MySQL server and do what needs to be done.
Wasn't this info suppose to be created during install? Or is there a
step that I am missing here. To be sure if the domain exists I did:

mail# ./vdominfo
could not open assign file /var/qmail/users/assign
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) ./vdominfo

This is installed on OpenBSD 3.2 on i386. Anyone have a suggestions?

Thanks
Geoff

Wait let me follow up on this, that I CAN create other vdomains and
users in those domains. However I can't seem to do anything with my
default domain of whootis.com.

Thanks Again

Maybe I am reading this wrong.. but all that your config did was set the
domains whootis.com as your default domain. If you have not created it then
you don't have a default domain.

What happens if you do ./vadddomain whootis.com

BWAHAHA Yes yes I now see the error of my ways. 24hours without sleep
does that to you. I misunderstood. I though that setting the
default-domain actually *created* that whole bit. Yes I have now added
the domain and things seem to be working just fine.

Thanks for everyone's help! :-)

[vchkpw] POP before SMTP

2003-03-12 Thread Andrew Hamilton
Hello, I have a qmail + vpopmail setup with --enable-roaming-users=y. Users
are able to authenticate and receive mail, and their IP is added to
open-smtp. The problem is that it will authenticate a person and then allow
them SMTP access iff they are on 65.243.94.* (our class c, the server's
address is 65.243.94.6), but if they are coming from some other address,
then although POP authentication works, they are not allowed to use SMTP.
I'm sure I'm missing something silly, but I can't seem to find it. Any help
will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi Scott,

No; Rick told you to send a HUP.

Anyway, you need to send a HUP to _qmail-smtpd_, not qmail-send, as the
rcpthosts file is read by qmail-smtpd, not qmail-send. vpopmail normally
does this automatically, but obviously did not in your case.

That's what supervise is for.

Enter "/var/qmail/bin/qmail-qstat" and see if they're in the
"unprocessed" state.

> > more info from /var/qmail/control:

This can be achieved easier with "qmail-showctl".

> > it seems like it recieves the message, and doesnt

You have logs, so there's no need to "it seems like". Your test mail
comes from the same domain that makes trouble, so qmail cannot send a
bounce and will deliver it to the postmaster. If the postmaster address
points to this address, too, you'll have a triple bounce, and qmail will
discard it as it doesn't find a valid address to deliver the mail or a
bounce message.

The first message is generated by UID 500, which is propably the
qmail-smtpd user. The second message is generated by UID, which is
probably the qmail-queue user. Check your /etc/passwd to be sure.

I've tried this but it doesn't change the behaviour. I can see in the logfile:

but i don't see an entry following this showing the mail being delivered to

Is tcp.smtp.cdb regenerated successfully? Use cdbdump from Dan's "cdb"
package to find out:

Are you using an additional relaying technique besides static relaying
(tcp.smtp) and roaming users, e.g. SMTP AUTH?

Are you sure that messages from these hosts are actually to be _relayed_
instead of being locally delivered?

Re: [vchkpw] Re: feature request qmail-smtpd-chkusr

2003-03-12 Thread Matt Simerson
Very nice work Tonino.

I've taken a look at your patch and I like it. Fortunately for me,
last week I moved my last "system users" domain into vpopmail so all my
mail domains are virtual. Having done that, I can actually use your
patch now. I've build it into my Mail Toaster Mega-Patch (very similar
to Bill Shupp's) available at:

http://matt.simerson.net/computing/mail/toaster/qmail-1.03-toaster-
2.4.patch

That patch has been extensively used and tested by myself on several
very large (70,000+) mail clusters and many hundreds of users who build
their mail servers based on my Mail Toaster Recipe:

   http://matt.simerson.net/computing/mail/toaster/

I have a toaster build script (Perl) now that nearly automates the
entire build on FreeBSD systems. However, you can just as easily use it
to build a nicely patched qmail install by simply downloading it and
running it like this:

toaster_setup.pl -a install -s qmail

It'll ask if you want qmail-smtpd-chkusr support and if so, download
and apply the appropriate patch.

Hi Eduardo,

my patch basically modifies qmail-smtpd.c code, using vpopmail

As any patch, it may not work if someone applied other patches before,
so I don't think it may be right to include it in vpopmail package.
vpopmail configure must work 100%, and cannot rely on already patched
qmail code.

No problem if someone wants to make it, or Inter7 decides to include
it in vpopmail, but I see it troublesome (not because of my patch, but
because all the patches that are usually applied on qmail).

All could be competely different if inter7 decides to distribute an
extended qmail+vpopmail package. That could help a lot of people, and
a lot of patches could be added easily.

Let me know what you think.

Ciao,

Tonino

P.S. Actually, the installation of the patch is extremely easy, and
you may install it also on patched version of qmail (a lot of people
asked me and did it). If you have a plain qmail installation, the
patch will work in a few minutes.
The patch has been written in a easy and compact way (with a
semplified version for Bill's megapatch or other complicated patches)
just to help people that use a deeply patched qmail.

[vchkpw] feature request: -r option to vpasswd

2003-03-12 Thread Andrew Kohlsmith
I'd like to request a feature (I'll probably supply a patch in a few days
anyway) which would add an -r (regenerate) option to vpasswd to take the
existing vpasswd file and regenerate a vpasswd.cdb file for a domain.

Before I go and do this (hopefully trivial) patch, is this the only way to
regenerate a vpasswd.cdb file?

I recently moved a domain to a different box (and different version of
vpopmail) and broke the authentication mechanisms (straight .cdb) -- the
easiest thing to do (by far) is simply to zap the passwords and use the
learning passwords feature. This would enable me to do so with ease.

Regards,
Andrew

[vchkpw] more weirdness with vdelivermail and maildrop

2003-03-12 Thread Iain
Hi,

I am seeing some weird behaviour with SQL based aliases in combination with
maildrop.

After setting EXT and HOST the following works:

cat testmail.txt | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox

However this doesn't:

cat testmail.txt | maildrop mailfilter-test

when mailfilter-test is:
import EXT
import HOST
VPOP="| /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox"
to "$VPOP"

I see vdelivermail: valiases processed but the mail is not sent on the alias
destination.

please help.

cheers, Iain.

A couple hodge-podge ideas...

You could create a robot ("autoresponder") with an address like
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and program-in your stock welcome message. Then
write a wrapper script for your vadduser that creates the user then sends
a blank email to the robot address, resulting in the welcome message being
returned.

Or, write a wrapper script that creates the user and then simply does a
mail -S subject [EMAIL PROTECTED] < welcome.msg (or whatever the syntax
should be).

That's assuming, of course, that there aren't any built-in mechanisms for
this. :)

Iain, can you try your test again, but this time can you try specifying the

Is there anything in the logs at all? Any messages from maildrop? Can you
add some explicit loging?

Well if I turn on logging in maildrop i see the following when i send to an
alias. This is the same as what I see when I send to a non alias.

Date: Thu Mar 13 16:21:38 2003
From: Iain <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subj: test 3
File: | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox (873)

In terms of logging in the qmail logs I see:
@40003e701c540a230dfc info msg 130274: bytes 717 from
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> qp 4525 uid 506
@40003e701c540c22ed0c starting delivery 1545: msg 130274 to local
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
u
@40003e701c540c22fcac status: local 1/10 remote 1/20
@40003e701c540cf13d74 delivery 1545: success:
vdelivermail:_valiases_processed/did_0+0+1/
@40003e701c540cf14d14 status: local 0/10 remote 1/20

However after the valiases processed message there is no log of email being
sent to alias destinations, as indeed the email is not sent.

Thnks everyone for your help

Now my qmail is able to authenticate both my virtual and non-virtual
domain.

FYI
I have try to reconfigure with the following options:

./configure --enable-roaming-users=y --enable-passwd=y

and it still prompt me the same error.

then I use configure my qmail to use multichkpwds
and now it is ok.

[vchkpw] Qmail virtual domain outgoing IP address patch

2003-03-12 Thread Jan Knepper
Qmail virtual domain outgoing IP address patch
I do not know if it already had been done, but incase not, here it is...
Good luck!
Jan
http://www.digitaldaemon.com/FreeBSD/qmail/index.html

Title: qmail

Qmail virtual domain outgoing IP address patch.
digitaldaemon.com uses qmail in combination with vpopmail. Using those two packages together is great for dealing with email of virtual domains. digitaldaemon.com
runs about 50 virtual domains.

However, with several net block's all outgoing email processed by qmail-remote is being sent
through the first IP address on the interface. In case of digitaldaemon.com this means that customers using their
own domains to relay email always will have a reference to digitaldaemon.com in the message headers once the email
is being processed by the system and sent to a remote system. In case they legally bulk mail (or SPAM) and are
being reported digitaldaemon.com is being reported as well as their own domain.

To prevent this qmail-remote has been patched to use the IP address of the virtual domain
and also use the virtual domain as HELO host instead of the default, i.e. the first IP address of the interface
and teh domain name stored in me or helohost. In case qmail-remote is not able to determine the domain name or
the domain name is not a local domain which can happen in case of forwarding the default is being used.
The following files were patched:

	qmail-remote.c
	timeoutconn.c
	remoteinfo.c
	qmail-qmqpc.c

With a bit of luck you should be able to just drop these files into a current build and rebuild
qmail. The changes are being marked with "// JAK".
