Also for anyone else running qmail/vpopmail on a Gentoo system and using the SMTP-AUTH patch, a change from r13 to r15 will break your setup unless you update your USE flags. It is related to notlsbeforeauth feature. See the following posting for more details: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-339867-highlight-smtpauth.html Be warned anyone running qmail/vpopmail on Gentoo r15 is a bit of a headache when upgrading. -Dougal This is pretty much in responce to Jeffrey A Schmidt's mail called can't relay any more posted on Fri, 15 Apr 2005 17:28:34 -0700 Jeffrey, Gentoo has once again made HUGE changes to a package without informing it's users thereof before allowing the package to install. this is from the ebuild : einfo Use of vpopmail's tcp.smtp[.cdb] is also deprecated now, consider einfo using net-mail/relay-ctrl instead. incase you're wondering what this means ... from the install section: econf \ ##SNIP## --disable-tcp-rules-prog --disable-tcpserver-file --disable-roaming-users \ || die # TCPRULES for relaying is now considered obsolete, use relay-ctrl instead #--enable-tcprules-prog=/usr/bin/tcprules --enable-tcpserver-file=/etc/tcp.smtp \ #--enable-roaming-users=y --enable-relay-clear-minutes=60 \ #--disable-rebuild-tcpserver-file \ They have disabled roaming users aka relaying in vpopmail. Ok, it's been about a week now of upgrading my box. I've changed from vpasswd cdb's to the mysql auth type. I've imported all my old mail/domains/users/etc. Everything seems good, and I was planning to do the flip this weekend... well, everything but imap. noticed trying to login with squirrelmail, it rejected every user. vuserinfo is succesful, but my maillog states the following: Jun 30 15:37:03 minoru imapd: chdir /usr/local/vpopmail/domains/xxx.com/postmaster: Permission denied Jun 30 15:40:20 minoru imapd: chdir /usr/local/vpopmail/domains/xxx.com/postmaster: Permission denied Jun 30 15:41:38 minoru imapd: chdir /usr/local/vpopmail/domains/xxx.com/mint: Permission denied imap is running as root minoru# ps axfu | grep cour root 512 0.0 0.2 1252 864 con- I 3:25PM 0:00.05 [couriertcpd] root 515 0.0 0.1 1212 712 con- I 3:25PM 0:00.03 /usr/local/sbin/courierlogger imapd root 522 0.0 0.2 1252 864 con- I 3:25PM 0:00.02 [couriertcpd] root 524 0.0 0.1 1208 672 con- I 3:25PM 0:00.02 /usr/local/sbin/courierlogger imapd-ssl and the directory is 700 vpopmail:vchkpw Any clues?
[vchkpw] mail quotas
Is there a command to force vpopmail to recalculate the maildirsize. We see a few cases where it is out of sync with the actual bytes and message count. Also, we see a few accounts that are over quota still are accepting mail - especially dictionary attack spams. Can the system enforce strict quotas and just not accept any mail when over quota. We had a account go over 997MB due to dictionary attacks and they had set the account as the default. TIA Best Regards, Jeff Koch,
Re: [vchkpw] mail quotas
here's my two cents on this issue... maildirsize will not reset unless you use courier pop3d or qmail-pop3d with maildir++ patch. Otherwise peoples quotas will fill up and never go down unless you run a cron to remove maildirsize for every user. - Original Message - From: Jeff Koch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: vchkpw@inter7.com Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2005 3:37 PM Subject: [vchkpw] mail quotas Is there a command to force vpopmail to recalculate the maildirsize. clamav isn't the problem. Wait a month and your output will look like this. This happens when clamav wants you to update clamd and whatever. That's fine but the admin might not get to it as soon as it becomes outdated, but with this issue mail smtp breaks immediatly so the admin is forced to update clamav the very second the scanning engine becomes outdated. I first discovered this when I got a custom smtp rejection full of astisks **, it was the first line of clamscans output. as soon as I update clamscan simscan's smtp sessions work. - Original Message - From: Rick Macdougall [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: vchkpw@inter7.com Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2005 3:43 PM Subject: Re: [vchkpw] mail relay problems ... BCC is just an extra envelope recipient that isn't in the headers. qmail-tap uses the envelope information, and ignores headers. In the past when using the QUEUE_EXTRA code, I noticed I lost the envelope recipient as a variable for use($EXT and $HOST). It got changed to whatever I set up under QUEUE_EXTRA. Because of that I couldn't grab BCC emails. $SENDER was still set just fine. that will occur here as well, because this is basically an extension to the QUEUE_EXTRA code, and just adds a recipient to queued messages. -Jeremy -- Jeremy Kitchen ++ Systems Administrator ++ Inter7 Internet Technologies, Inc. I'm not clear how the server would accept new incoming mail for the domain from my own servers once the MX does cut over here if there's no entry in rcpthosts. you would just tell your POP server to allow relaying from the MX servers. okay, i presume then that there's a way to add permanent relay entries into the mysql database. no need for this, just edit your tcp.smtp file and add a static entry. i'll have to do a little research. what about vpopmail's insistence on maintaining the rcpthosts/morercpthosts files? will i have to manually delete the files after each new domain is added to the server? well, you want to make sure at least rcpthosts EXISTS, but it can be empty. if you add a new domain to the system you will have to go and manually remove it from the file, but vpopmail won't completely rebuild the file with all of the domains for you. sorry for all the questions. Am I way off on my understanding here? If so, is there an environment variable that stores the BCC field or are we saying the same thing only different. Currently I am migrating my logging down into my maildrop file to catch the envelope recipients due to fact that queue_extra changes what I know as the envelope recipient to log, which is set up as a an alias that runs maildrop with a special filter file. If I can do it all at once and at the queue level that would be great. My method doesn't seem to be the most efficient yet it does work. I think I am missing a piece here and I don't even know what to ask about... I hope this makes enough sense... Brian
[vchkpw] pop-before-smtp and chkuser
Hello everyone, I have a pop-before-smtp server running vpopmail 5.4.5. That server only serves clients that supply a valid login/password pair. Some clients, however, started abusing this system by sending tons of spam which gets us blacklisted in various RBL DBs. what I'm trying to do is use CHKUSER_RCPTLIMIT option to at least limit the number of emails that gets sent at once. it seems like for that I need to have the following line in tcp.smtp.cdb for every entry: RELAYCLIENT=,RBLSMTPD=,CHKUSER_RCPTLIMITsome number since vpopmail only creates RELAYCLIENT=,RBLSMTPD= - it seems like the only way is to hack vpopmail.c around line 2526. another way is to hack chkuser to hardcode some value to CHKUSER_RCPT_LIMIT_VARIABLE instead of looking at the env variable from the cdb file. which way should I go? I don't think I'll have a problem modifying either source code, since it seems like a pretty straightforward change. am I missing some other, simplier way? -- Igor

Old bug in vdelivermail -- it wouldn't do quota checks on the catchall mailbox. To force a maildirsize recalculation, just delete the maildirsize file. I have a new vdelivermail in a read-to-release 5.4.12 that I need to upload to SourceForge. I still consider it somewhat beta, but 5.4.12's vdelivermail might be more reliable than 5.4.10 (the last release before my re-write). Just FYI, I've been running 5.4.12 since Tom had me test the new changes. I've had no problems with it (yet) and I've stressed it quite a bit in testing. Regards, Rick

We use Bill Shupp's Toaster with qmail, vpopmail and qmailadmin. You're saying quotas won't work with this combination and just vpopmail installed?
