[VFB] Re: Feather smell

2008-10-29 Thread Anthony Spezio
The white part of the tail can be a substitute for Polar Bear as can other
parts of white fur.
This was a road kill in perfect shape, not smashed so I thought I would skin it
out. It was a cold day and I was at a friends shop on the lake. I put the skin
in my new van with the windows closed. It did not smell in the cold air outside
where I skinned it. The sun warmed up the air in the van and no need to tell
you, it was cold driving the 40 miles home  with all the windows open.I tried
washing the pelt and several other things to get the smell off the skin. I
finally tried Borax and Joy, that did it and left the skin part nice and white
and no smell.

  RULES for OLD FART SWAP

Be at least 50 years of age, or thereabout :-P ,
and a confirmed Old Fart.  If you won't admit to being an Old Fart,
I'm sure your wife will vouch for you! LOL   I dropped the age
limit  when it seemed we didn't have enough over 65 Old Farts to make a
decent Swap.  AARP starts their Senior program at age 50, so there you
  go!

Tie a fly of your own design, or whatever, preferably one of your
favorites. Type of fly - trout, salmon, salt, panfish, etc., Size of fly is
  up to you.
Time frame for flies to me would be around the first of February, with
the usual toe tags, (little tags with name of fly and your name and email
address),  return postage packaging or pre-stamped return package.
HOW MANY FLIES TO TIE ?? At this point, you would tie 13 flies to send
to me. It'll always be one fly below the total number, cause you don't need
  to tie one for yourself.

FLY TYERS SIGNED UP AS OF 7:30
Tuesday morning, (today), are listed below. We'll give it a day or so, and
take a look at how many we have signed up. Don't want to over work us Old
Farts.  New folks wanting to join, just hit reply and type your name
below the last one on the list.

Note: By your comments, I deduced that those of you listed below
wanted to be an Old Fart.  But . . . . if you didn't and don't want to
be in the swap, let me know.

Tight Lines and Smooth Whip Finishes to all.

2008-10-29 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
As of 7:48 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, Oct. 29 we have 21 signed up for the
Old Fart Swap. I'm cutting it off at a maximum of 25 tyers. There's
only 4 spots left. So hurry, or get left out. If we don't reach 25
today, I'll cut the swap off at whatever number we end the day with.

Then I'll take the swap off list except for timely updates that might be
of interest to others, i.e. names of Old Fart Flies, etc. I will also
reiterate the Rules, etc. when I move the Swap Off List.

Read my prior emails for RULES, etc.

Chris, what part of Montana are you in? I will be on vacation Nov. 7-14 in

Nobody has missed anything...except for their flies.

I promise that they will get to you...significant issues here in Montana
right now.

I also promise that I haven't been fishing with them. Or fishing at
all, for that matter.

[VFB] Re: Feather smell

2008-10-29 Thread Anthony Spezio
John,
Yes it was a fun day. I got home at dark and had to leave the windows on the
new van open all night. Funny thing was, when I had it hanging in my outside
shop it did not smell, I would take it inside to my tying room and in a day it
would smell. In and out it would go. I finally left it out. We moved to
Arkansas and I had it in a box with other furs in a sealed plastic bag. When I
opened the bag it smalled. I had decided to dispose of it but hung it under the
porch. In the outside air, it did not smell at all till I brought it inside. I
finally decided to soak it in Borax and Joy after washing some Pheasant skins.
Low and behold, no more smell. That was over 10 years ago, the skin is still in
my tying room. It is too perfect to cut up. I have another skin for that.

It sounds like you had a fun time
with that one. I bet your significant other was thrilled with you that day. I
was thinking that you could have tied it to the top of your van or on the grill
as a trophy.

The white part of the tail can be a substitute for Polar
Bear as can other parts of white fur.

This was a road kill in perfect shape, not smashed so I thought I would skin
it out. It was a cold day and I was at a friends shop on the lake. I put the
skin in my new van with the windows closed. It did not smell in the cold air
outside where I skinned it. The sun warmed up the air in the van and no need
to tell you, it was cold driving the 40 miles home  with all the windows
open.I tried washing the pelt and several other things to get the smell off
the skin. I finally tried Borax and Joy, that did it and left the skin part
nice and white and no smell.

Wash the skin in Borax and a bit of Joy dish soap. Rinse it well in
fresh water then use a hair dryer set on cool to dry it. The air will fluff
the feathers back to normal. That is what I found to remove skunk small
from a Skunk pelt. If it works on skunk stink, it should work on the
partridge.

this

RULES for OLD FART SWAP

Be at least 50 years of age, or thereabout :-P ,
and a confirmed Old Fart.  If you won't admit to being an Old Fart,
I'm sure your wife will vouch for you! LOL   I dropped the age
limit  when it seemed we didn't have enough over 65 Old Farts to make
a decent Swap.  AARP starts their Senior program at age 50, so there
you go!

OK, Thomas is # 23. But, if you would like, I can make you #23 and
Thomas # 22. In any event, we only have two vacancies. As for being an
Old Fart, you definitely qualify, and a grumpy one too! :-P

JIMMY D

This will be interesting. As I'm no 22 and Thomas is #22 as well, each
of us has to tie 12,5 flies. Thomas, do you want to ty the first half
the the 13th fly, and I do the 2nd part or should we switch this?

[VFB] Feather I.D. Request

2008-10-29 Thread Wes Wada
Hi VFB,

Feather i.d. request for the wizards out there.

I am in need of a relatively durable feather, at least a durable stem. The
shape needs to be like a Corn Nut, and not longer than 1/2 from base to
tip, smaller is also good.

Does anyone know what feather, from what cape, would be close to that
description? Color is secondary. If it is necessary to simply trim a
feather to get this shape, some suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Chuck, you don't need bifocals for your computer. Just go to Walmart
and get a pair of plain old reading glasses. That's what I use. I
have 2.0, 2.5 and then 3.0 magnification, that I use for fly tying.
 Lots cheaper.

Oh, I got 50 pair of reading glasses.I buy them by the dozen at the Dollar Tree
store LOL. I put em in the bathroom, in my bedroom, tying table, car, fishing
tub, fishing vest, by my computer, in my tool box. You name it. My problem is
that I sit with my face about maybe 16 inches from the screen. At that
distance, with my glasses on, the screen is blurry. If I take them off, at that
distance my normal vision is blurry. I can read the computer by wearing my
glasses and putting my head real close to the monitor, which gives me a
headache, or by enlarging my fonts, which is what I had to do..Getting to be an
Old fart is rough LOL.. Thanks,. Chuck

Chuck, you don't need bifocals for your computer. Just go to Walmart and get
a pair of plain old reading glasses. That's what I use. I have 2.0, 2.5 and
then 3.0 magnification, that I use for fly tying. Lots cheaper.

P.S. My Opthamologist says they are ok and won't hurt your eyes

Folks: I don't know if my email fonts on your end are now huge or not??? If
so, I'm sorry, but I had to increase them as my close up vision is
soo bad, i could no longer read my emails. I have to get some new
bi-focals..My far off vision is pretty good, but on the computer, the screen is
just far away enough to make wearing my reading glasses VERY fuzzy, but is near
enough in that without my reading glasses, reading my mail is getting near
impossible, Chuck
