[VFB] Re: FIRST Traditional Winged Wet Fly Swap

2009-07-07 Thread DonO
Iain,
I've got the 'mixed bag' (or is that 'mixed box'?) of wet flies tied, but I'm
not done yet. Having too much fun re-visiting the 'traditional' patterns I
grew up with- the 1st flies that I tied as a kid. My my... first the '65
Mustang, now flies. I think I still have some old catalogs where these were
still offered as box-stock flies.
It is fun digging through feather bags that I haven accessed in 20 years- would
never use that stuff tying modern flies. A true lost art, those wet flies of
olden-days.

Oh...and what a mess I'm making...

Henk, i don't see your name on the scheduall for Conclave... Hans will
be there this year. This may be our last year to go. As we keep getting
more and more invites all over the place.we will have to eliminate other
shows that we've done so many times. We'll prolly miss the Symposium in
Somerset in Nov. for the first time ever this year as well. We're shifting
things as we now live in Arkansas. We're in Roscoe now, but we're headed back
to Arkansas in 6 days. Maybe we'll get to see you on your side of the pond
next. Or, you can make the Sowbug someday soon? Have fun at Somerset and take
care. mark.

Well, as far as the list goes, IF it dies (which I don't expect any time soon
;-) ), someone else will surely step in and take over. In this day of
ubiquitous Linux/OSX/Other *nix machines and widespread broadband connections
anyone can run a mailserver from home...

[VFB] Re: FIRST Traditional Winged Wet Fly Swap

2009-07-07 Thread Neville Gosling
I found this swap to be quite a challenge as I have not tied winged wet
flies for a very long time. I experienced some difficulty in placing the
beard hackle or collar without crowding the eye and sometimes the wing did
not go as planned. You are correct, it is a lost art (at least for me).

Iain,
I've got the 'mixed bag' (or is that 'mixed box'?) of wet flies tied, but
I'm not done yet. Having too much fun re-visiting the 'traditional'
patterns I grew up with- the 1st flies that I tied as a kid. My my... first
the '65 Mustang, now flies. I think I still have some old catalogs where
these were still offered as box-stock flies.
It is fun digging through feather bags that I haven accessed in 20 years-
would never use that stuff tying modern flies. A true lost art, those wet
flies of olden-days.

Oh...and what a mess I'm making...

[VFB] Single Hook Restriction.

2009-07-07 Thread Neville Gosling

Yes Mike:

In all waters be it river or lake although when fishing alone in a boat, a
person can use two rods each with a single hook. In all rivers and streams,
a barbless hook must be used. Certain lakes also have the barbless
restriction.

[VFB] Fishing last Thursday and Friday

2009-07-07 Thread Anthony Spezio
Finally getting time to post this.
We have family here from N.J. and Oklahoma. They are grand kids and great Grand
Kids.along with the adults.
The White river has been running a lot of water so I was not able to take the
kids out in the boat to fish. On Thursday afternoon we decided to check out the
lake. It was still high but we did find a spot where the kids could fish. It
was a bit steep and brushy. Checked out the brush and let the kids get down to
the water. The lake water was over a lot of brush that is normally out of the
water so a lot of hang ups were expected. We rigged up the kids who range in
age from five to nine, with spinning rods bobbers and worms. They started
catching Bluegills almost at once. One of the four year old Great Grand Twin
caught a real nice Largmouth about 12. I rigged up my fly rod, tied on a
Peacock and Bronze and started catching Gills from about the second cast. I did
get hooked up in the underwater brush and lost a couple of flies. The kids did
too but we were able to fish. I got about 10 gills before we quit, it was just
getting too hot.
My son in law wanted to fish so I told him we would check out Crooked Creek
early Saturday morning. The Creek had been too high to fish for a while. We
drove over to the creek early Friday morning and found it still high but it was
wadeable, you had to be careful. I was using my 7/9 bamboo rod and my son in
law was using the 7' bamboo rod I made for him 10 years ago.We tied on a couple
of Peacock and Bronze and got in the creek. Before I started to cast, my son on
law was already on to fish. In spite of the creek being a bit high, swift
current and a bit colored, we were catching a good number of Gills. Then Steve
got the first Small Mouth, it was not a very big one but his first. A bit later
I got a Smallie, Then some more gills and he caught another Smallmouth about
9.. Working up the creek, we would hit hot spots that would yield 8 to 10
Gills. I was only able to get up to the first riffle but Steve went up to the
Carp hole. He got into a couple of
Small Mouths up there. He said he could see some real large Smallies but could
not entice them. It was starting to get hot so I was about ready to head back
to the van. I got back and took off my waders and thought Steve was right
behind me. I was getting worried after about a half hour and was going to go
back to the creek and check on him.
I finally saw him coming through the brush. He was on his way back down when he
hit a hole that was producing fish. He told me he took about 30 Gills from that
one hole..
We lost count long before we quit but I know we took over 100 gills and
Smallmouths along with a Roach and a couple of Goggle Eyes in the 4 1/2 hours
we fished.
It was a good day for both of us.
Arkansas Tony

Jim,
All were released, we did have some that were hand size.
I have an agreement with the owner of that stretch of creek, all fish will be
released. Even if I did not have that agreement, I would still release any fish
I catch. Two real good catfish places in the area to eat fish and I don't have
to clean or cook them. LOL
Several list members have fished there with me.

law was already on to fish.

[VFB] Re: Fishing last Thursday and Friday

2009-07-07 Thread J Balmer
So there I was, inspired by Tony’s wonderful tale, getting ready to load up
the Jeep (or rather getting ready to unload the back so I could load my rod
pack) when it started raining. Rain doesn’t usually bother me, so I went
back in to get rain gear when It started pouring. That didn’t bother me as
much, so I went back to change my footwear, but there’s something about
waving 8 ½ feet of carbon around when there’s lightning that gave me pause…

Finally getting time to post this.
We have family here from N.J. and Oklahoma. They are grand kids and great
Grand Kids.along with the adults.
The White river has been running a lot of water so I was not able to take
the kids out in the boat to fish. On Thursday afternoon we decided to check
out the lake. It was still high but we did find a spot where the kids could
fish. It was a bit steep and brushy. Checked out the brush and let the kids
get down to the water. The lake water was over a lot of brush that is
normally out of the water so a lot of hang ups were expected. We rigged up
the kids who range in age from five to nine, with spinning rods bobbers and
worms. They started catching Bluegills almost at once. One of the four year
old Great Grand Twin caught a real nice Largmouth about 12. I rigged up my
fly rod, tied on a Peacock and Bronze and started catching Gills from about
the second cast. I did get hooked up in the underwater brush and lost a
couple of flies. The kids did too but we were able to fish. I got about 10
gills before we quit, it was just getting too hot.
My son in law wanted to fish so I told him we would check out Crooked Creek
early Saturday morning. The Creek had been too high to fish for a while. We
drove over to the creek early Friday morning and found it still high but it
was wadeable, you had to be careful. I was using my 7/9 bamboo rod and my
son in law was using the 7' bamboo rod I made for him 10 years ago.We tied
on a couple of Peacock and Bronze and got in the creek. Before I started to
cast, my son on law was already on to fish. In spite of the creek being a

Jim,
All were released, we did have some that were hand size.
I have an agreement with the owner of that stretch of creek, all fish will be
released. Even if I did not have that agreement, I would still release any fish
I catch. Two real good catfish places in the area to eat fish and I don't have
to clean or cook them. LOL
Several list members have fished there with me.

actually caught the salmon fly hatch.  That was something.  I also
